It doesn’t matter why, but there is a file I have to access at work regularly right now that’s labeled “Purple Rain” (this has literally nothing to do with what is contained in the file, which is why I feel okay divulging this. It’s an unofficial versioning thing that me and like three other people know about). And every day, I have to open something related to this file and I get a song stuck in my head.
No, not “Purple Rain”, for, you see, I have never actually heard “Purple Rain”. In fact, I think the only Prince song I know is “Raspberry Beret”.
I digress.
I could be coy about this and make you guess, but there is just no cute way to say that I have spent the past two weeks arriving at work and promptly getting lines from “Chocolate Rain” by Tay Zonday stuck in my head on a loop.

I discovered a new laugh of mine listening to Taylor Swift's "Suburban Legends" just now
it was in reaction to me saying "what's with the vibrato, what're you Post Malone now? Toast Swallone?"

i’ve been given a terrible vision this morning at 6:35AM. We are no more than 8, no less than 3 years before someone makes a really powerful, soulful, cover of Chocolate Rain by Tay Zonday. It will be accompanied by a music video that very clearly portrays the obvious racial message of the song. The end of the video will have a dedication to the most recent high profile police murder of a black person.
the conservative circus will cry that “they made Chocolate Rain woke!”

Yet another thing that baffles me: the popular reaction to Tay Zonday's Chocolate Rain. How on earth did anyone, much less the majority, of listeners hear "The bell curve blames the baby's DNA, but test scores are how much the parents make" or "Every February¹ washed away, stays behind as colors celebrate" and think "wow what a funny meme song, wonder what it's about". This shit was capital w Woke in two-thousand goddamned seven. Was there a mass epidemic of auditory processing disorders that year?
