Now, that July 4th celebrations are over, it’s time for Summerween! Olivia (oliviareadsalatte) and Gabby (Gabby Reads) are once…
me tryna gauge if this book is doing a half-assed critique of male splatterpunk authors in the era of self-publishing fiction, or if ol girl here is a serial killer herself who’s now in a flamewar with an overzealous author who’s demanding she delete her 1-star review of his shitty ass book
It is not lost on me that I'm giving a less-than-stellar review to a book whose whole premise is about an author who becomes unhinged over a bad review. But I've read a lot of thrillers in my time, and while this book had a good premise, the execution could have been better.
The main character's backstory is revealed over the course of the novel, but it meant that I didn't feel much for her for the duration of the read, because I didn't know anything about her. There is a twist, but to thriller readers, it's not a surprise.
I think this story would work better as a movie, to be honest: lots of action, but the interior thoughts of the characters didn't add enough to the novel for me to care about anyone's fate.
Escaping into reading to avoid facing your own problems is enticing but problems won’t simply go away, which one woman in a remote location learns as she faces some dangerous consequences for her opinion of a book in The Last Word by Taylor Adams.
While trying to escape from her life and grief, Emma has established a routine of spending her days reading books while house-sitting in home on a…

Book Summary:
Emma Carpenter is looking for a bit of an escape. That’s why she took a job house-sitting in a remote location, all on her own. Well, mostly on her own – her golden retriever, Laika, is keeping her company.
Unfortunately, Emma is about to learn the very…
Taylor Adams's The Last Word is an exciting, violent bottle thriller - with fantastic slasher vibes - about letting go of the past and moving forward, no matter how impossible it may seem. It's far from a perfect book, relying too heavily on its many twists, almost all of which are (extremely?) predictable and - by the last of them - exhausting in the worst way. But I had quite a bit of fun with this one, regardless. It's a quick, electrifying read that utilizes its isolated space perfectly and has cut-throat pacing throughout; all of which ultimately leads to a gripping, satisfying ending despite the flaws of its parts. Plus, that first excerpt of Murder Beach is absolutely hilarious. Just gold.
