TAID members and supporters gathered at the Capitol on March 7th to meet with Texas legislators, office by office, to educate on what a licensed/registered interior designer does. We also expressed our support for three bills this session. Communicating in a Virtual Work Environment

In modern-day reality, we rely a lot on virtual networking. In fact, studies show that we communicate more in virtual form than we do in person (Duras, 2019). After the pandemic, there was a boom in virtual workplaces. Subsequently to these changes, more individuals began working from home rather than in-office which has ultimately led to a change in communication (Davey, 2021). There is now a vast number of individuals communicating virtually as more companies are running online. A lot of businesses have agreed not to return to the office and keep their company solely functioning online. With this change, companies can both be influenced in a good or bad way. There are aspects that virtual work environments need to overcome as some negative aspects of virtual teams are that they lack personal connection, malfunctions in technology cannot be predicted, and the overall effectiveness of communication declines.

Although companies can serve some benefit by adapting virtual workplaces, the overall personal connection among employees declines and becomes challenging to maintain. This is due to proximity as well as the limited time to interact online. When your co-worker is just an office away, it is much easier to get in contact and to maintain a relationship as they are close in proximity (TBAE, 2020). In terms of interacting online, there is still a possibility of maintaining a relationship, however, when you are limited to only seeing your co-workers through webcam, you have a smaller window span of seeing them, thus less time to build personal connections (Davey, 2021). Studies show that 60-80% of our communication comes from non-verbal communication tactics like eye contact, body posture, touch, gestures, and pitch (Refinem, 2021). We lose this connection as the non-verbal cues are not as evident over virtual networks.

Technology is unpredictable and as helpful as it can be, it is not foolproof. There are many ways technology specifically affects the virtual workplace. Meetings don’t run as smoothly on camera as they do in person and this may be due to network interruptions or simply the imperfect virtual system (Refinem, 2021). When a company runs an online meeting, there needs to be an orderly fashion in terms of when employees can speak to avoid disruptions and breaks in the communication of the meeting process. (Refinem, 2021). Due to these disruptions employees may thus be less reluctant to participate as they would prefer to avoid causing disruptions (TBAE, 2020). The flow of communication is altered when networks crash as well as when unavoidable disruptions occur (Refinem, 2021). While technology has offered the virtual team ample platforms to proceed with workflows, malfunctions in the systems cannot be predicted. Internet crashes are highly possible and can create delays in work processes while the company works on getting them fixed (Davey, 2021). This results in delayed meetings and potentially changes in due dates.

Good communication is a key success factor of a company’s success. Effective communication is important as it results in higher motivation, fewer unforced errors, and an overall more positive team environment. When communication is solely based online, there is less interaction among team members and the readiness of employees is lower (TBAE, 2020). Since co-workers can only communicate online, getting in touch with co-workers is more difficult. A direct response to this is a result of low employee morale and productivity as individuals are not getting answers on time from their colleagues and lose that friendly motivation (Refinem, 2021). With virtual communication, colleagues don’t have such close relationships and are also less likely to speak up when conflicts occur or simply even to participate in group meetings (Davey, 2021). This is especially prevalent in the global team environment, as the likeliness of them meeting up is lower than a virtual team that is all based in the same geographic area.

Virtual communication can be bad or good and it is all dependant on the strategies that companies take to avoid all of these communication barriers. If the proper strategies are adopted all of the downfalls of virtual communication can be corrected and can ultimately result in an extremely successful workplace (Riley, 2008).

October Takeover Tidbit and Theory

So, we all know damn well that Bloodmoon ain’t gonna stay with Ruin or that Ruin will even keep Bloodmoon, but in their video yesterday, Ruin started humming You’ll Be Back and at first I thought nothing of it until I listened to it today and was hit with a realization…

There is most definitely some foreshadowing here… and I think I found it
