500 Words for 500 Followers - #77 “What did you expect? For everything to just go back to normal?”

“Hey, how was your first day back?” Carlos greets TK as he enters through the door.

“Not great,” he huffs. In fact, it was way less than great if he was being honest. 

Today was his first shift back on duty after getting shot several weeks ago. While his dad was hesitant to bring him back soon, the stitches were healing up fine and TK was more than eager to start doing what he loves again.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

TK meets Carlos’ eye. Of course his boyfriend is being more than understanding, ready to hear him complain about anything and everything. But not wanting to burden Carlos with his issues, he shakes his head. 

“Okay,” Caros nods. “Well, dinner is just about ready so why don’t you take a seat.”

Just a few minutes later, Carlos brings out two plates of his signature chicken marsala and they begin to eat. The only noise between the couple is the scratching of forks against the plates. TK knows Carlos is waiting for him to speak up first. He also knows that if he’s not going to talk about his day, he should probably be polite and ask about Carlos’ or at least mention how good the dinner is.

But instead, he focuses his attention on each bite and not the awkward silence that fills the room.

“Okay TK, you have to give me something,” Carlos says exasperated. “I can’t just sit here in silence.”

“It just wasn’t a good shift,” he says, hoping that it will satisfy Carlos. But with the other man looking at him, waiting to elaborate, he sighs. “My dad barely let me go on any calls with the team. And the calls I did go on, I didn’t even get to do anything.”

“I see…”

“Yeah, it’s just frustrating. I was so ready to come back to work, and now I am but it’s not the same.”

“I mean, what did you expect? For everything to just go back to normal?” Carlos says, somewhat amusedly. 

TK pouts. “Yeah, I did actually. The doctor cleared me, so I’m good to go.”

“Physically, yes. But what about mentally?”

“I’m fine, Carlos.”

“You were shot, TK,” Carlos plainly states. “This wasn’t just a minor injury. This was something very traumatic that you went through and it’s going to take more than just your stitches healing for things to go back to normal.”

TK nods, processing what Carlos is telling him. 

“I’m sure it wasn’t easy for your dad either. He was there when it happened and it can’t be easy seeing you back on the job again with the constant threat of something going wrong.”

TK freezes. He wasn’t even considering how his dad must view all this. “Shit, yeah I didn’t think of it like that.”

Carlos smiles sympathetically, reaching across the table to grab his hand. “Hey, it will all go back to normal eventually. It’s just going to take time.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” TK replies, giving his hand a squeeze before they return to their meals. “Now why don’t you tell me about your day?”

Are you trying to make me blush? Because it’s working. Here’s a bit from that Tarlos and Owen prompt (which is really going to be a Carlos and Owen fic but whatever). You can have a whole paragraph just for that comment:

He was so distracted by his thoughts that he didn’t notice the sound of footsteps coming down the hall until an exclamation of surprise had him looking up to see a tousled, shirtless, and embarrassed Officer Reyes standing at the threshold of his kitchen. 

“I’m sorry Sir, I didn’t know…” 

Owen waved off his stammered apology, “You didn’t do anything wrong, Carlos. And please, it’s 3 am and you’re in my kitchen—I think you can call me Owen.”

84. Favourite Holiday - (I’m going to presume this is holiday as in vacation) Gosh, that’s a super difficult one! I’m torn between our big family holidays to Cyprus or Turkey, and New York just before Christmas in 2015!

71. Which fictional character is you? - I always find this one difficult, I tend to gravitate towards my favourites first! But in this test my top three are Luna Lovegood, Willow Rosenberg, and Hilda Spellman!

56. Favourite aesthetic - Hmmm, I love purples and space themes, but I honestly don’t really have a particular aesthetic, I think I’m just too all over the place for that 😂

21. How was your day? - it’s been pretty good so far thank you! Just sorting some stuff out for Christmas and waiting for a call back about a job!

2020 Fanfic question

How many stories did you complete?

80, but some of those are drabble series and collections. I haven’t counted the three ongoing drabble repositories for my three fandoms, the RNM S2 that’s not completed, and the RNM under-1k collection.

What is your total word count for the year?

482,573, which are more than half of what I’ve posted in all my history at Ao3.

What fandoms did you write in this year?

911 Lone Star, Roswell New Mexico, Red White and Royal Blue

Did you write more, less or roughly around what you expected you would?

Infinitely more. When the year started, I thought I would write as much as I did in 2019 (which was way less than half of what I’ve done in 2020) and then I hit a huge writer’s block with one of my fandoms. But I guess between the pandemic, having more time to write, switching fandoms... I’ve ended up writing a lot more than expected.

What’s your own favourite story of the year?

I can’t choose just one! I usually don’t like what I write. But it has to be a tie between with all the sorrow and the joy and here at the end of the road (maybe happiness is worth the chance of a bitter end) and on another broken avenue. I am aware of the fact that all three are 911 Lone Star. What can I say?  

Did you take any writing risks this year?

I tried my hand at fluff by the end of the year, as well as light smut. It had been a long time since the last time I did that, and it got surprising good numbers.

Do you have any fanfiction goals for 2021?

I wish I could finish everything I have started, but that’s almost impossible. But a girl can dream!

What is your most under-appreciated story?

That’s nothing in between (RNM) with 85 kudos. It’s evidently not my best, just a collection of drabbles, but still. It stings a bit. But I guess it comes with the territory.

Biggest fanfiction related disappointment of 2020?

I wanted to write more Malex. Sadly I couldn’t. I still can’t. I hit a huge writer’s block sometime throughout S2 (and I bet my closest friends can pinpoint the exact moment) and the wars in fandom haven’t helped my case. 

Biggest fanfiction related surprise of 2020?

911 Lone Star fandom has become a beacon of light in the darkness. In the beginning of the year - and halfway through it - I got more into it and I found out that it’s full of amazing people. It didn’t hurt that I already knew some people in it (coughStefcough) and that everyone has been so welcoming and understanding so far. It’s not just a fanfic related surprise - it’s a fandom related one!

11. How would you describe your style? (Character/emotion/action-driven, etc)

I’ve never really thought about it, but I guess either character or emotion driven, depending on the fic. I guess I would go more with emotion though, because even the character-driven ones take a long walk through their psychology. 

24. Do you prefer AUs with the characters, or sticking to the original universe? 

In retrospect, this is pretty funny. Before a few months ago I would have always said the original universe. But then I started writing AUs so now...I guess it depends on the AU. Right now I am focusing more on the original universe, but I have some ideas to add on to my AUs, maybe. 

32. What story do you think showcases your signature style the most? 

I really don’t know. I honestly don’t even know what my “signature style” is. My best guess would be a lot of introspection and narration and the two I can think of right now to fit that are the ghost was you and shut your eyes and fall apart. Yes, these are kind of sad ones (apparently that’s when I really go for it on the introspection) but I think they get that down pretty well? 

Or I am completely wrong, very possible.
