Watching: Kara and Nate's most recent bike across America video. Listening to: And That's Why We Drink episode 352

historical pirates resources
cw for rape, violence, torture, death.
A general history of the pyrates free ebook over at The Project Gutenberg.
Real Pirates podcast' "Unlikely Allies": A five part series on Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Historically accurate, slightly dramatized, includes interviews with official biographers and historians. This whole podcast narrates a history of piracy using popular ones as a thread. Haven't listened to all of them but the quality is amazing and they cite sources if you wanna keep reading.
The last podcast on the left made three episodes on the life of Blackbeard with some mentions of Hornigold and Stede Bonnet (1, 2, 3). A layman's take on piracy. First episode does a deep dive on life as a pirate and as a sailor, does not cite sources.

Took the certification exam for teaching middle school science yesterday, spent two weeks stressing and studying because I haven't had any kind of test since starting grad school
Tumblr media
I made a 275!! Not only did I pass, I passed at a professional level!! 🎉🎉 It's also important to note that this was a 2 hr long exam and I finished it in 1 hr even with checking my work twice! That two weeks of stress was worth it

One of my fav random interactions I've had in the middle school I teach in
Me: *walking in the hallway* *a bunch of students blocking the hall*
Me: excuse me!
Random girl walking past: you guys are gonna run over [MY TEACHER NAME]
Other students: sorry
Me: no worries
Me: *walks away* who was that girl?? How does she know my name??
I always find it funny when the kids are protective of random teachers they never see

Make sure to check in on and take care of the teachers in your life. These upcoming back to school weeks are basically the opposite of teacher appreciation month for us.

Hi! This is my educator journal, just for me, but you are more than welcome to follow especially if you are also an educator.
About my job: I have an English degree with minors in creative writing and Japanese, and I am going to start my M.Ed this coming spring semester. I'm going to be vague when I talk about my job for my protection but I'm an academic instructor for an Indigenous nonprofit and I work with middle/high schoolers.
I will never say any students' names, show any of their work (I do not like when people share pictures of their students' work on the internet to make fun of them), and I will never speak badly about a student here.
About me: I'm Okinawan and a hafu, and I live in the US. I love knitting and have a small knitting business (I also crochet for this business), I read a lot, and I play video games often with my twin (we are very close!). I'm a butch lesbian and I want to be the queer educator that I wish I had. My pronouns are uncertain currently but I'm trying they/them. :) I live in a very conservative state and I was called a faggot in high school and I just never felt safe to be who I am, so I really want to be a safe person for these kids to talk to. Also back to video games, I love Deep Rock Galactic it's my favorite game. I'm also currently into Ooblets. :) And I do bodybuilding five days a week!
I'm also disabled! I'm visually impaired, have chronic ETD, and am neurodivergent. :) I'm learning to accept and embrace this about myself, and it may become a topic of discussion in my blog.
Ok that's my post!

July 17 2023 | ☀️
The last couple of days before summer break are always chaotic. Pretty much none of the students want to work any longer, so coming up with alternative activities has started to become challenging. My go-to moves are watching Harry Potter (they love imitating the British accent lol) and Kahoot quizzes. This time it was to sum up our reading of "Looking for Alaska". I also prepared farewell gifts for my students. I'm a lot better at writing down my thoughts and feelings than saying them out loud, so I decided to give them little appreciation letters.

Weekly Reflection:
I survived the first week of teaching! Well to be fair, it was only two days but it was still a big thing.
My district is pretty casual and we were told to wear jeans the first day and Fridays are always jeans day. The downside of dressing casual is that I blend in with the high schoolers. Thankfully I'm taller than most of my elementary students.
I can tell the students are still trying to gauge me as a teacher. I know I am very different from the former music teacher who was basically an institution. The 4th graders have taken to me quickly because I'm there first orchestra teacher.
This week my goals are to set a clear pace for the intermediate levels. I think spending more time reviewing music literacy and navigating the fingerboard will help them.
With my beginners, I need to get them started on their method books this week and trusting them a little more to unpack their instruments.
My goal with high school is to make more connections with them.
I'm also going to make myself eat lunch in the teacher's lounge at least once. No hiding in the basement for me! Plus it will keep me from working through lunch.
In my personal life, Ajax had to spend the night at the vet for some deep-muscle shots which made him very sore. Thankfully he's bounced right back and is feeling like himself again. I've been more motivated to read and cook lately. Meal prepping is definitely going to keep me sane!

Dear parent of my student,
When I said I was available to talk to you on the phone at 10 AM or briefly after school and to let me know which you preferred, I did not mean "both" and I certainly didn't mean "invite yourself over for an in-person meeting."
Although I am seeing a glimmer of an explanation regarding your student's difficulty with following simple directions.
