Poolside 50k Fundraiser

 “This is more psycho than running 250 miles.” “Make sure Robin records it.” “Haha – it’ll take more than that to make you look deranged.”   Yes, these are actual quotes and responses from people that are incredibly near and dear to my heart.  The first one being from my youngest daughter Alaina 😊!  So, what does this all mean?  We will get to that towards the end of this but allow me to introduce the story.  For those that don’t know, and I am hoping there are many out there that this comes to, for the last 5 years I have been participating in ultramarathons.  As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic throughout the world, there have been many ultramarathon events that are being postponed or canceled and rightfully so.  Kudos to those race directors and racing company’s out there that made that bold decision.  For those that aren’t aware, there will be many small racing companies’ out there, like many other small businesses throughout the country, that will lose their business, their career, job, and livelihood.  As I write this, there has been one race that I had coming up that has been canceled and another I am slotted to run on July 11th, that, based on other events, my likely be cancelled or at least postponed to a later date.  

 For those plugged into the ultrarunning community, you will likely have seen many posts on social media of folks doing double digit runs, under quarantine conditions, in unrealistic situations.  I’ve come across people running marathon’s and 50k’s on rooftops, treadmills, and around their kitchen tables.  No joke!!  They are adapting, adjusting, and being creative under situations that aren’t ideal. This morning, Jamil Coury, Founder and CEO of Aravaipa Running, did a marathon on the rooftop of his office building.  You can see the full 6 hours of it here in the YouTube video 😊.  Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Jamil but have run in and volunteered at many of his team’s races out in AZ.  You may have seen my race wrap ups of his races over the last 2 years.  When I saw what he did today on his rooftop, and since the state of AZ issued a “stay at home” ordinance, I figured what the hell.  So, thank Jamil, I think 😉, for the inspiration.  

 Now, in the grand scheme of things, is this a big deal? No, not at all but when it is a loss, to a certain degree, and when you train for something and that opportunity is taken away for reasons outside of your control it is still tough.  However, we all have perspective and understand that life will go on. Additionally, we also understand that we get to control how our story goes.  Well, coronavirus or not, I am taking control over my story, and it should be quite the story to tell.  Since this all went down a couple of weeks ago, I am grateful to stay that I’ve stayed pretty consistent with my running.  I have backed off overall weekly miles but have still been getting out 5-6 times a week, so I feel my fitness is still strong from the Black Canyon 100k 6 weeks ago.  Where I’ve been lacking is in my diet and nutrition 😊. Actually, we just had Taco Tuesday with some margaritas, and I am enjoying a nice Stone IPA while I write this! I would say don’t judge but I will leave that until the end of this blog entry.

 So, this leads me to the purpose right?  After not much deliberation and all and really just getting fed up with all the bullshit out there with what’s happening, I’ve decided to run a 50k around my pool.  Yep, that is 31 miles around a .014ish mile loop (see attached picture – WTF?) in my backyard.  Why? To abide by the state’s ordinance, practice social distancing, and well, why the hell not?  As I said, I’ve had some inspiration, I feel that my fitness is at a level where I can do it, and, we would like to give back a little too.  However, we would like to ask your help in this effort. In addition to running ultramarathon’s (and doing wacky shit), I am combing another passion, that of helping others with this “opportunity.”  For many years I’ve been supporting our military heroes and veterans & I would like to continue that effort with this as well has helping those impacted by the pandemic.  Therefore, we’ve created a GoFundMePage and have chosen Team Rubicon’s #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors to support.  Directly from their site, “Team Rubicon is built to serve, and in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we’ve launched the #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors initiative to meet the needs of our communities through safe individual acts of service.”  You can click the link here #NeighborsHelpingNeighbors to find out more about these support efforts.  It is short notice, but this will take place this Saturday, April 4th, starting at 7am PT (10am ET).  We will be doing live Facebook feeds (if Robin and the girls can get it to work 😊), tracking it on Facebook & Twitter, posting pictures, and updates for anyone to follow along.  Hell, you can even send me a Facebook/Twitter message or text me if you like?  This is to be in good fun, to raise money for our communities, to help us all come together at this time, and of course, follow social distancing standards.  Oh yeah, if that means I GET to run around in a small circle for several hours to create some awareness so be it.  It will be a blast, likely have some beers involved, and hopefully some comedic interaction with folks 😊.

It’s what I imagine space must feel like but with way more to see and experience. I just got back from the Bahamas with my father and brothers, right before the hurricane hit. I put this video together to hopefully inspire you #humanheroes to help and also honor the trip. A few highlights of the video include... me speaking ‘whale’(equalizing underwater), swimming through underwater caverns, one of the infamous blue holes and its spiderweb mineral secretions, and also my closest encounter with a shark.
