I’ve said before Transformers has struggled recently with its villains and recent material doesn’t change this.
Ever since this happened…

We’ve largely been stuck with poor man’s Vegeta Megatron.

And as such the series has lost its main villain, and become directionless.
The modern version of this trend started with Rescue Bots & RiD15, but it made sense in their respective series, and the replacement villains were treated like actual villains and are fondly remembered because of that.


It’s also not the first time Megatron was succeeded in leadership, as the Marvel Comics did this shockingly frequently.



With RatBat being the most unique case, in that he was the only one who largely succeeded in his efforts, and was a result of sincerely wanting to try something different.
I think that sincerity is long gone in favor of brand stagnation and “DEI” despite the later going out the door as of typing.
The usual replacement tends to be Galvatron, often depicted as an evolved Megatron through mystical means.


But Hasbro seems very reluctant to use Galvatron lately for whatever reason, instead usually having him as a (technically) separate character if he does show up.
Cyberverse kinda shows the current problem two fold. The bad writers convinced themselves they wrote a sympathetic Megatron when the writing shows him to still be certifiably insane and going through what is essentially an on the nose bad break up with Optimus. This extended to Megatron somehow being worthy of using the Matrix, and able to use it, despite Decepticons never typically being able to, and imply Optimus isn’t worthy of the Matrix, but never follow up on it.
To convince themselves and the audience that the regular CV Megatron was still a good person despite his atrocities, the writers pulled an Archie Sonic, and brought on their own Robo-Robotnik in Megatron X.


He too is apparently worthy of the Matrix and able to use it, despite completely destroying Cybertron and most, if not all, of its non Perfectcon inhabitants.
(To be fair, the idea of a Decepticon being able to use the Matrix goes back to Marvel G1 Thunderwing, but his actions helped corrupt the Matrix, creating the Dark Matrix Creature, but Cyberverse never states this is the case at all. This isn’t really a popular concept the series goes back to either, making Cyberverse the outlier.)

This ties back to Hasbro’s reluctance on Galvatron, as X was originally supposed to BE Galvatron in a Marvel G1 homage, but Hasbro said no.
So we’ve been left with a weird, but non committed, experimental phase of trying out different Villians to less than stellar results…


(Mandroid and Scourge are pretty good villains, but Mandroid quickly succumbed to bad writing, & Scourge was fairly quickly killed off, with no clear intent to go back to the Terrorcons and have a Movie Cyclonus based on the Armada version to take Scourge’s place.)
This feeds back into fan complaints about Hasbro’s unwillingness to try new things I’ve seen recently. In context the complaint was more wanting another Beast Wars like thing with new factions and new non G1 characters.
Like we HAVE been getting that with the Terrans and Terrorcons, but it’s clear kids aren’t that interested in them, and adult fans are as fickle as ever and not supporting it super well either. TFONE is pry the most damning, where it’s doing poorly across the planet theatrically, despite trying a new non-evergreen art style, and a much better version of Aligned/IDW caste system that simplifies it to Cogs & Cogless.
It’s not for lack of trying, but it’s also not grabbing kids well either.
This weird flip flopping recently came into play with Galactic Trials, the crappy looking racing game.
The game casts Nemesis Prime as the main villain, who tried to steal the relics of the Primes, but fail and cast the Chaos Emeralds, er, relics across the galaxy.


Here’s the weird part: this happens before the Great War began, with the Autobots and Decepticons now finding out in the present and scrambling to collect the relics for themselves. The story isn’t expanded and confuses things. Nemesis typically isn’t even a Prime, but a Decepticon clone of Optimus. Barring a few exceptions, the main deviation this MIGHT be referencing is IDW Nova Prime, who briefly became Nemesis Prime, powered by a Matrix like relic from the Dead Universe.

So does that mean in this universe the Matrix chose a guy literally named Nemesis to be Prime? Is this actually supposed to be Nova Prime via IDW? Is this Orion Pax’s black sheep of the product line? So many questions this game isn’t going to answer.
This is the frustrating part about all this. I like that they’re trying to branch out still, and I liked Nemesis Prime in IDW and back when he was Scourge in RiD01, but…
He’s kinda pointless here.
Why are we using a “new�� character for a failing on launch, not-mobile game, when the plot would be much simpler in that Megatron or Starscream raided the vault of the Primes only for Optimus to intervene and launch the relics into space. Why is Nemesis the villain? For that matter, since it’s a racing game, shouldn’t the Stunticons be the villains?

This is where CyberWorld might be the make or break now.
I think slowly but surely, Hasbro is recognizing their past ideas on overusing antihero Megatron isn’t working, and that they need to properly commit to a successor if they don’t want Megatron to be a villain anymore.
Going by toy leaks, it appears they’ve decided to go BACK to Galvatron proper, but they also include Scorponok, who’s typically cast as a leader in some capacity (excluding Beast Wars).

(Until we learn more, I’m leaning towards their roles being similar to Superlink’s.)
So I think that’s a step in the right direction so far; going for Skybound’s aim of familiar but, they’re willing to pivot under better writing.
I think that’s where TFONE D-16 doesn’t work as a concept.

Like it if not, casual audiences and kids aren’t that invested in the idea of a wide eyed good boi Megatron who fell from grace or wants to redeem.





They want these kinds of power hungry megalomaniacal Megatrons, who are willing to go the extra mile just to upstage Optimus to stroke their own ego. Not high school bosom buddies with gay lover subtext that Stereotypical Tumblr-Twitter wants. And hopefully with what we’ve seen with Skybound, we’re going back to that Megatron soon. And if we don’t go back to Megatron strictly, then Galvatron might be the way to go cartoon wise.

Funnily enough, something similar happened to me on Twitter. Someone contacted me in private because they wanted to talk about CV with me, but "I didn't want to message you so publicly because there are some people who don't like you that follow me"
And my reaction was... cool? Thanks for telling me? I'm not even super active on Twitter and I can count on one hand the amount of times I complained and attracted discussions. I just felt sad that this person treated me like a clandestine. It reminded me back when I was in high school and my friend back then was like "don't help these people, they talk shit about you" - what am I supposed to think, other than "oh :("?
And the CV fandom is all but dead, even the NFCV fandom is certainly more active but currently resting. The Sonic fandom, especially on Twitter, is an absolute nightmare. People really do pounce you for any reason they deem justified, and all sorts of petty discourse is pushed in front of your face for the sole reason of making you angry.
Anyway, I say already what I said: for a fandom who will call you all sorts of names if you don't have the right wholesome opinions on minor characters, they sure have zero mercy for real life minors whose crime is complaining in their corner of the internet. Silly you, daring to have an opinion!

Might be missing some context here, but honestly, that sounds a little backhanded. Best case scenario, they're worried about inadvertently shining a spotlight on you, which just raises questions of why they're hanging around folks who'd dogpile people to begin with.
Like bruh, this is video games fandom, not an illegal gambling ring lmao. Saying "I can't reblog from you because you have cooties" would be more emotionally honest.
To some extent, though, I do have to wonder how much of this is a modern-day fandom culture thing and isn't confined to just Sonic, because patterns seem to repeat across fandoms. Half-Life has settled down AFAIK, but that was after virulent tourists literally called the cops on fic writers for shipping a ship and caused the old guard to disperse. The Silent Hill Reddit, likewise, refuses to hear any criticism of the SH2 remake because you're harshing their buzz. And hey, anything Konami offers us must surely be better than nothing. "Technical limitations" is similar misinformation that gets passed around via games of telephone a la Shadow mandates. I don't need to tell you how Sonic fandom treats unpopular opinions. Don't know what to call it. Toxic positivity? Consumerism? Anti mindset? Clout chasing? Social media-fuelled outrage? All of the above? Whatever it is, it's becoming more prevalent in fannish spaces. Maybe it's because I'm more invested in Sonic fandom than the others, but there I've noticed that there's definitely this added layer of superciliousness to Sonic that just makes the usual fandom wank even more obnoxious. Yes, the HLVRAI stans might lie and say your ship is pedophilia, which is incredibly unfortunate, but nobody was giving them the microphone and saying they ought to be taken as an authority on all things Half-Life. In fact, the old guard pushed for AO3 to separate HLVRAI and Half-Life in the tags for years for this very reason. We weren't all suddenly like "hmm yes, maybe Gordon really was a ~secret pedo~ who thinks of grown-ass Alyx as a child when she flirts with him in-game" because we knew that was fucking ridiculous. But for some reason, we're all supposed to think "IDW!Sonic is Games!Sonic" lest we bu run out of town with torches and pitchforks, I guess.
The worst part is it's hard to tell what people want anymore. You can't say things they don't want to hear even in your own space. You can't say it politely, you can't say it rudely, you can't say it to your friends or to people you're arguing with, you just cannot say it at all without risking a ton of fans going "well you said it, therefore you deserve what you get." And, frankly, fuck that lol.

Okay so here's the thing...I don't really listen to music anymore. Since I got sick, I've had to be very careful with noise levels because of my sensory sensitivity and too much noise makes me ANGRY. But even before then my taste was really eclectic, and I never used Spotify.

Okay so I had a very hard time getting into grad school, mostly because I was applying to a very prestigious program that had rigorous qualifications that my CV did not meet. However, that didn't stop me from applying there two years in a row (always catch me overreaching what other people think I'm entitled to, lmao)
The first year I applied, almost everything went wrong. I was working 2-3 jobs at the time, and I was late getting a letter of recommendation from my previous thesis advisor, so it was too late to mail it. My only time off was a Thursday afternoon, the day before it was due.
Traffic SUCKED. I had to travel over an hour by car to get to the university. The parking situation was a nightmare. I couldn't find the building. When I finally got there, the doors were locked. I had just lost a year. I had failed.
I sat down on the concrete stairs in front of the building and just started to cry. I was so done. There was no way I could come back the next day, and I didn't know anyone else who could help.
A kindly young man sat beside me, asked what was wrong, and when I explained the situation, he said, "Don't even worry about it. I will hand this in for you at 9am sharp and you will not be late. I promise!"
What could I do? I had nothing else to lose, except for him maybe looking in the envelope, stealing all my personal information, and using it to defraud me later. So, I gave the stranger the envelope with my application, drove home shaking, did not sleep at all, and then called the administration office the next morning.
"Yeah, we got it at 9am sharp!" she said. "You just made it!"
And that's why sometimes you can trust strangers.

Okay so I believe that Kadash and Teleb totally got it on during the Unification Era. They fought side by side, they shared a tent more nights than not. They were close as a zipper but not technically courting. Kadash leaving the army to become an ardent was a huge hit to Teleb, and he ended up marrying Kalami after that. Since then their relationship has been strained, because even though Teleb understands the decision Kadash made, he can never fully forgive him for leaving, and he could never speak out loud exactly how much Kadash meant to him. And then of course Teleb died in the battle of Narak and now Kadash has to live with that. I think maybe Kadash and Kalami developed a friendship after that.

Well it’s official. This time we mean it.
EarthSpark is officially over as the toy listings for the next show are out.
The next thing is Transformers Cyberworld.
Any relation to Cyberverse is unknown atm, but if Hasbro is serious about not revisiting older series, then this is a new continuity either way. Cyberverse came from a toy line used in the films and Prime, so it was probably a trademark slap deal for the cartoon. Cyberverse didn’t refer to anything unique to the show, and no I don’t count the multiverse as they never once referred to it as “the Cyberverse”, and the show was made up on the fly as they went with multiverse stuff coming on much later coincidentally. In no way was Cyberverse/multiverse planned, that takes a level of basic planning the CV writers didn’t know how to do.
To my recollection Cyberworld isn’t in reference to a preexisting thing toyline or otherwise, so hopefully whatever Cyberworld IS is better expressed in the plot and toy gimmicks.
The toy listings don’t have Megs, Screamer & the Waves as previously mentioned, but they also seemingly lack Bee & Optimus.
The named Autobots so far are Mirage, Grimlock and (presumably) Snarl.
Presumably Snarl as most instances are Autobots/Maximals, the most famous being the Dinobot Snarl. More than likely it’s the Dinobot, but we do have an instance of a Snarl being a wolf. I’d be fun seeing the wolf again lol.
The Decepticons meanwhile are Galvatron, Scorponok, Sky-Byte and (presumably) Offroad.
Presumably Offroad is a Decepticon (most TFs with the name are), but the toy is listed as “OP Offroad” so it MAY be an off road truck version of Optimus Prime, similar to his RBA & ROTB toys.



One toy is listed as “Meg Bull”. No idea what this refers to. Theres plenty of bull Transformers, but whether this is any of them isn’t clear. This being a “Megatron Bull” would be hilarious but I don’t really see Hasbro doing this just yet either.
Toy gimmicks and sets similar to what we saw last in Prime appear to be making a return? “Scorponok Strike Battle” sounds like something in that vein like a Hot Wheels play set, though it may just be Scorponok with a tail lashing action. Beast Wars style, Movie style or G1 style remains to be seen.
Galvatron is said to have armor, while the other gimmick line’s called “Cyber Changers”.
These are probably the One Step Changers of the series but hopefully it’s something more involved like the Beast Hunters.
Chomp & Stomp Grimlock is probably more than likely another version of this:


Hopefully retooled to better match the new Grimlock though.
The stand outs are Galvatron & Scorponok, as it’s not clear which one is the leader of the Decepticons here. Both have been leaders before, & more than likely it’s Galvatron. Galvatron being used again is the biggest shock, as Hasbro has been dodgy about using him in place of Megatron in recent years. IDW wrote Galvatron as a separate character who predates Megatron, while Prime Wars declares (confusingly) that Megatron used to be Galvatron, implying he somehow de-evolved, which has never been depicted properly. (Japanese G1 stuff adds to the confusion where Galvatron evolves further but goes back to calling himself Megatron… oy…) WFC tries to have it both ways with Galvatron as a separate individual, but that he’s from a dark timeline where both he and Optimus were enslaved by Unicron…
I suppose my point is technically Megatron is still in the series as he’s typically portrayed as evolving into Galvatron, but Hasbro has been so weird about non Optimus and Megatron leaders, that they could easily just have Galvatron be an unrelated villain. Either way, the desire to focus on Galvatron is very welcome, regardless if he’s Megatron or not.
