About Willi Smith
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willi Smith was considered one of the most successful African-American designers in the fashion industry at the time of his death in 1987, and the inventor of streetwear. His label that launched in 1976, WilliWear Limited, grossed over $25 million in sales by 1986 according to The Guardian. Inspired by the fashion he saw on the streets and also his desire to shape it, Smith’s accessibility and affordability of clothing helped democratize fashion.
Born in 1948, Willi Donnell Smith grew up in Philadelphia with an ironworker father and a mother skilled in the creative arts. “I was Mr. Bookworm. I was the artistic child no one understood. But my parents supported me. If I was doing a little drawing, my father didn’t say, ‘Why don’t you play baseball?’... The family sometimes used to say there were more clothes in the house than food.” After his parents divorced, Smith’s grandmother, Gladys “Nana” Bush, stepped in to nurture him, a role she played throughout his life.
Smith studied commercial art at Mastbaum Technical High School and fashion illustration at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art. He found himself bored by the limits of illustration, always “changing the design of the dress [he] was supposed to be illustrating.” Through the connections of a family for whom she cleaned, Bush organized an internship for Smith with venerated couturier Arnold Scaasi. At Scaasi, Smith assisted in creating fashions for clientele like Brooke Astor and Elizabeth Taylor, learning form, fit, embroidery, and the power wielded by access to a certain type of dress—a crash course in elite levels of fashion and the clothes he didn’t want to make
His label, Williwear, was ahead of its time: mixing the relaxed fit of sportswear with high-end elements of tailoring. His clothes were not meant to be untouchable, catwalk-only designs. Although the term “streetwear” has been much chewed over recently, Smith’s more elastic definition of the term (bringing urban culture to the catwalk) has been incredibly influential.
His clothes were meant for everybody. He said: “Fashion is a people thing and designers should remember that. Models pose in clothes. People live in them.” Though he was inspired by New York City, he wanted people everywhere to appreciate the culture and inspiration of the city. “Being black has a lot to do with my being a good designer,” he said. “Most of these designers who have to run to Paris for colour and fabric combinations should go to church on Sunday in Harlem. It’s all right there.”

A KC Swiftie could probably go more in-depth than I, but here's a quick rundown from a Sporty Swiftie:
He's considered one of the top tight ends ever, probably top 5 with possibility to be considered the all-time best by the end of his career. KC, with him, has won the Super Bowl 2 out of the last 4 years. Tight ends are an offensive position, and they are absolutely huge, usually the tallest guys on the team. It varies team by team, but basically he does half smashing into guys (blocking for the run, if you want to get technical) and half catching passes like he did yesterday for the touchdown.
He has been in the league for 11 years, which is a very very long NFL career, and is likely to go another couple of years, if his body holds up. He's been with the same team the whole time, which is not entirely common anymore. He has a brother, Jason, who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles (of "Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door" fame), and they actually played against each other in the Super Bowl last year. Travis won.
He's an Ohio boy, born and raised, and went to college there too. He was on a dating reality show early in his professional career, hosted SNL recently, and he and his brother have a podcast, so he's not going to be scared off by the attention that follows Taylor around. But he's also at the absolute top of the NFL hierarchy outside of quarterbacks, so no one needs to worry about him 'clout-chasing' or anything like that either. He and his mom recently starred in a commercial encouraging people to get their COVID and flu shots, and while he is generally non-political, what information we do have is promising.
This was fantastic tysm

hey thanks again @im-chinese-believe-it-or-not for the WIP tag, I will continue to post WIPs whenever given the opportunity lol
Here is the start of black widow babe, which is obviously a Marvel au with nix as the winter soldier.
Babe's on a mission. He has an aspiring politician to honey trap, get information out of and then take out of play, his discretion as to what that means. It's not the first time he's ever been out in Washington DC. But he’s not being closely monitored this time. He’s already proven himself with a handful of successful missions, working with another Widow and then by himself. It's mostly been information retrieval, with a couple of assassinations, and two other honey pot operations. He's had enough field experience that they say he doesn’t need a full-time babysitter anymore.  It's enough that he gets a little leeway, anyway. He’s got cash and he hasn't taken the DC sights in all that much. What harm could it do to take an extra couple of days? All his handlers need to know is that it took longer to get the guy alone than they wanted. That happens all the time. He’s not going to take so long that they start asking more questions than that. So Babe decides to enjoy himself a little. He walks down the National Mall, looks at the monuments, and pokes around in the Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum. He gets a hot dog from a food truck. He goes to a movie, goes out to dinner, gets drinks in a bar. It’s nice. He lets himself indulge the fantasy a little. It feels like he could just be a normal American twenty-something, maybe a college kid, taking a vacation. Like he really is just Edward Heffron who grew up with his mom and dad and little sister Anna in the suburbs of Philadelphia. He takes another day, and after getting pancakes and bacon for breakfast, he wanders into the Smithsonian Museum of American History. That’s where he finds out that the Soldier has a name.  The Winter Soldier, it turns out, was called Lewis Nixon. Lewis Nixon III, if you want to get technical, and he grew up ultra-rich—and American—in the 1920s and 30s. Babe discovers this when he spots the Soldier's face smiling back out at him from one of the panels. It says he was Captain America's best friend, and that they met while training for the super soldier program where Captain America got his superpowers.  And it says Lewis Nixon died in 1945, the only one of the Howling Commandos to give his life for his country. If the Soldier died in 1945, who was it drilling hand-to-hand into Babe in the Red Room just a few weeks ago?
Aaand I'm p sure everyone is being tagged already lol but if you wanna do it, do it. I will also throw tags to my wife and bff @batmanschmatman and @toastandvegemite just in case you wanna take it to your fandom lol

Kevin McCarthy's ouster as House speaker is more than a momentary detour into dysfunction for the Republican Party, said David Leonard in The New York Times. It's "the latest sign of its drift toward radicalism." For the first time ever, a party deposed its own speaker mid-term, all because hard-right members were outraged that McCarthy engaged in bipartisan spending negotiations "inherent to democratic governance." The GOP has become the primary "source of chaos" in a nation that feels increasingly "unmoored" -and democracy scholars are alarmed. "In my lifetime, this is the greatest challenge that I've seen coming at us," Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Joseph Ellis said of Republicans' revolutionary fervor.
Throwing the House into turmoil is "a continuation of the MAGA riot Donald Trump incited" on Jan. 6, 2021, said David Rothkopf in The Daily Beast. "The rationale was the same": If the system doesn't deliver what we want, we'll just break it.
Our democracy's "downward spiral" could accelerate, said Will Bunch in The Philadelphia Inquirer, which would delight "a small but influential gaggle" of far-right thought leaders. Supposed intellectuals at Hillsdale College and the Claremont Institute see the spreading rot as proof of the need for a "Red Caesar": an authoritarian who will suspend democracy, root out the liberal "deep state," and "impose order." That a growing number of conservative academics and billionaire donors are embracing an
"explicit plea for dictatorship" is deeply alarming. Especially because "we all know who the actual 'Red Caesar' is-even if he is, technically, orange."
If you think that's hyperbole you're not paying attention, said Doyle McManus in the Los Angeles Times. Trump has laid out a terrifying " authoritarian vision" for a second term. He's promised to prosecute political opponents, send the National Guard into high-crime cities, and "purge the federal civil service of anyone who questions his views." Meanwhile, his rhetoric has grown increasingly violent, said Margaret Sullivan in The Guard-ian. He's called for shooting shoplifters, suggested former Joint Chiefs of Staff chair Gen. Mark Milley should be executed, and exhorted followers to "go after" New York Attorney General Letitia James for filing a fraud case against him. Many shrug off such words as "Trump being Trump." But voters must understand exactly what he'll do if he wins in &
2024: "Throw out American democracy and move to something none of us should want.

hi it’s me again. (the anon who said i liked seeing you on my dash) i love hockey and baseball (really any sport atp), and have noticed you do as well, so do you have any New Jersey and New York sports headcanons?
HI! WELCOME BACK! AND OH BROTHER (or sibling/sister) DO I EVER !!!!!!
when that hudson river rivalry hits >>>>>>>>>>>>>
devils/rangers rivalry goes fucking crazzyyyyy in the statehouse yeah its not buffalo but tables are still being broken alright. noses too. you shouldve SEEN the shit that hudson river rivalry was getting up to in the 2010s . nj/ny r the same fucking way btw. fighting ur long-esteemed rival every time your teams meet >>>>>>>>>. i like to think this extends to devils/islanders and devils/sabres matches too bc thats all still new york even tho the rivalry isnt as strong there in the actual sport but i want these goofers to have fun soooo. i say they get really into those matches too. they use sports as a way to ✨bond✨ even though they would kill me if i said that.
nj does not have a baseball team so i imagine he isnt the biggest baseball fan in the world. definitely a hockey, football, and (college) basketball guy to me. new york, on the other hand, may quite possibly be the biggest baseball fan you have ever seen.
did you guys know. that the new york jets and the new york giants play in the same stadium. THE SAME STADIUM!!!! they literally live in the same fucking house. thats crazy. and you know where that stadium is? IN NEW JERSEY. new york is just leeching off of new jersey atp. maybe thats why he’s such a ride or die for the bills actually bc its the one team he has that actually you know is in new york.
i also think they actually play sports yk . the NE has some damn good hockey matches . nj & ny both play forward, nj more of a gritty(ha) fiery guy who does the tough work and quite frankly a little bit of a pest. likes to get under your skin. sneaky good shot. winger, plays either side. ny, on the other hand, is a two-way forward, center, plays damn good defensive and offensive hockey, can double as an offensive defenseman too. u can find him all over the ice, in the right spots, doing what he needs to be doing. not known for his hits but lays good ones.
they also play football too !! i know jackshit about football though so i could not tell you what positions they play. all i know is quarterback 😭 is it basic of me to say ny quarterback? who knows. i dont!
looping back to hockey. theyre both diehard proponents that you should not take fighting out of hockey . mfs r projecting over here. new jersey threatens suicide every time his team does badly. he alternates between being mad at his team for sucking and then muttering “im gonna fucking kill myself” afterwards. (i know you didnt ask abt PA but he does the same. there’s this tweet thats like ‘every person ive ever met from philadelphia is a lovely person who casually expresses suicidal ideation within 2 minutes of talking anout their sports team’ and its the funniest thing in the world to me. does this tie into new jersey hcs? technically, yes, bc i hc theyre brothers ^_^ enough of that tangent) new york does not do that . i just dont feel like hes that kinda guy! he is very passionate about his teams tho. they both are tbh!
this is kind of all over the place but i hope you enjoy anon ^_^ and anyone who happens to read this. this is mostly about hockey SORRY thats what i know and love LMAO

Dawn Staley, the esteemed head coach of the South Carolina Gamecock's women's basketball team, has left an indelible mark on the sport. Her journey from humble beginnings to becoming a prominent figure in the league is nothing short of inspiring. Let's take a closer look at her childhood years, high school experiences, how she entered the league, and her remarkable career.
Childhood Years Born on May 4, 1970, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dawn Staley grew up in a challenging environment. Raised by her mother and grandmother in North Philadelphia's Raymond Rosen housing project - a neighborhood known for its economic hardships, Staley faced adversity from an early age. However, it was during these formative years that she developed resilience and determination that would shape her future success.
High School Years Staley attended Dobbins Technical High School where she quickly made a name for herself as an exceptional athlete. Excelling not only in basketball but also track and field and tennis, she showcased versatility and raw talent across multiple sports. As a standout point guard on the basketball court with unmatched skills and leadership qualities, Staley caught the attention of college recruiters nationwide.
Entering the League After graduating from high school in 1988 as one of Pennsylvania's most highly recruited players ever seen at that time. Dawn Staley faced numerous offers from top-tier universities across America. Ultimately choosing to attend the University of Virginia under legendary Coach Debbie Ryan was a physical decision that would set her on course for greatness.
Career in College Basketball During her time at Virginia (1998-1992), Staley became one of college basketball's most electrifying players. She led her team to three Final Four appearances (1990-1992) while earning All-American honors each year - an impressive feat indeed! Known for her exceptional ball-handling skills and court vision, Staley's ability to control the game and make her teammates better was unparalleled. Her leadership qualities were also recognized when she was named ACC Female Athlete of the Year in 1991 and 1992.
Professional Career Following her illustrious college career, Staley transitioned into professional basketball. In 1996, she joined the American Basketball League (ABL) as a member of the Richmond Rage. Her impact on the court continued to shine as she earned All-Star selections and led her team to an ABL Championship in 1997.
When the ABL folded in late 1998, Staley seamlessly transitioned to the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was selected with the ninth overall pick by the Charlotte Sting in its inaugural draft. Throughout her WNBA career, which spanned from 1999-2006, Staley played for both Charlotte and Houston Comets. Known for her tenacity on defense and play-making abilities on offense, she left an indelible mark on each team she represented.
Coaching Career After retiring as a player in 2006, Dawn Staley embarked on a new chapter of her basketball journey, coaching. She began as an assistant coach at Temple University before taking over as head coach at South Carolina in April 2008. Under her guidance, South Carolina has experienced unprecedented success. Staley has transformed South Carolina into a powerhouse program that consistently competes at the highest level. The Gamecocks have won multiple Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular season championships and SEC Tournament titles under her leadership. Most notably, Staley guided South Carolina to their first-ever NCAA National Championship victory in women's basketball during the historic season of 2016-2017.
Beyond coaching at South Carolina, Dawn Staley has also made significant contributions internationally by serving as head coach for Team USA Women's Basketball since March 2017. Under her guidance, Team USA won gold medals at the 2018 FIBA World Cup and the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Dawn Staley's journey from a challenging childhood to becoming a revered figure in women's basketball is a testament to her unwavering determination, resilience, and exceptional skills. As she continues to inspire both on and off the court, Staley remains an influential force in shaping the future of women's basketball for generations to come.

playlist meme
Rules: You can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. Put your playlist on shuffle and list the first 10 songs, and then tag 10 people. No skipping!
I was tagged by @rosyfingered-moon; so nice to find you here!
To be honest, this took a long time because I don't, um, listen to music that I am responsible for very much? The computer I'm typing this on doesn't actually have any music on it at all. So this meant going to my car while driving, where I do have a USB stick with songs (courtesy of @penguinity filling it with music). So I put that on shuffle, and here's what came up!
Half A Heart, Barenaked Ladies. So in general but especially while driving I have a strong preference for soft '90s/early '00s music, and all the BNL on my USB stick is my fault.
My Hometown, Bruce Springsteen. The Springsteen is all (yes, there's another one on this list) from college, specifically working as assistant technical director of The Gondoliers, when my boss was from New Jersey and listened to Springsteen's greatest hits while we worked. He gave me a copy of the CD when the show ended and I listen to it for that nostalgia hit.
Always, Rilo Kiley. This is entirely for driving vibes, which are very similar to my partner's sermon-writing vibes, which is where this song got into rotation.
Great Provider, Barenaked Ladies. I mean, I said I listen to them, but actually this is (I think) my single least favorite of their songs. Oh well.
Black Sand, Jenny Lewis. Since Jenny Lewis is the lead singer on Rilo Kiley, she's pretty well-represented here. This is a great song to not listen to but fill the air with sound while driving.
epiphany, Taylor Swift. You're going to notice a lot of repeats in the artist list. Taylor Swift is one of them. Slow, lingering, good for listening without actually distracting.
If I Fall You're Going Down With Me, The (Dixie) Chicks. (Dixie) in parentheses since they changed their name. This is the opposite of the previous songs; uptempo, makes me want to clap along. But strangely, still really good for the car.
Acid Tongue, Jenny Lewis. I literally never remember the name of this song, because it should be called Liar, because she drawls that word out forEVER, repeatedly.
seven, Taylor Swift. I rarely pay attention to the lyrics, but I think this song has good ones.
Streets of Philadelphia, Bruce Springsteen. You can tell I got this off a greatest hits CD because I had no idea it was a movie soundtrack song for years.
And there we are! So many overlapping artists, because there's only so many vibes I want while driving.
Tagging @penguinity (since you're responsible for most of the playlist existing) and whoever else wants to do it, consider yourselves tagged!

Well, I absolutely loved the first movie, so I was super-pumped for this one!
After the last movie, Billy and his foster siblings have been working as Philadelphia’s superheroes, thought the city isn’t always appreciative. But the daughters of Atlas, hespera and Kalypso, are now free from the realm of the gods, and they don’t appreciate how the Wizard Shazam stole the power of the gods, much less that he gave that power to children. Using the reforged wizard’s staff, they resolve to steal back that power and avenge the gods on an ungrateful human race.
It’s nice to see the Shazam family with more to do as heroes; still, it feels that we don’t get enough of them. We get enough that they’re all still distinctly different, recognizable people, and I appreciate that, but I thought we could have done with more development. There are tantalizing bits of information on their lives outside of the Plot (Mary apparently gave up college to help support the family??). We barely get Billy outside of his superhero form in this movie, which is a bit disappointing too.
I’ve seen it argued quite a lot that even in the first film, Billy and his superhero form feel like two different people. I understand that complaint, but I understood it as “In adult superhero form, Billy doesn’t have the inhibitions that he does as a kid, and acts a bit wilder because he can.” That being said, I definitely see that argument holding more water in this movie–especially because we see so little of Billy outside of his superhero form.
After seeing this, I would argue that SHAZAM! might work really well as a television series? That way, you can have time dedicated to all of the family characters and none of them feel short-changed.
It is also a little disappointing that after the last movie’s mid-credits scene, this movie is not about the schemes of Mr. Mind the evil caterpillar. Supposedly there was a draft of the script in which Mr. Mind was responsible for opening the realm of the gods, but as it is he has nothing to do with anything. I sort of get wanting to save him for something bigger, or deciding that it didn’t work for the story quite yet, but considering the entire premise is that these are kids that become superheroes, one might think that they might rush to get to the point while the child actors are still children?
Still, this movie still gets the tone of the original movie, so it’s loads of fun to watch. There’s lots of humor! The idea of kids as superheroes is still hilarious, as each of these kids decides to do different things with their powers and their lair. And it’s great to see what they do in this completely strange situation, where goddesses and mythical creatures start menacing their city.
Also, the Wizard comes back! And he has a lot more to do, and he’s delightful to watch on screen.
The fight scenes are pretty good. Obviously, they’re not like John Wick style martial arts fests, but as superhero action scenes, they’re good! Again, we’re watching a bunch of kids with superpowers, and they use those powers the way that you might expect them to. If I have a complaint with them, it’s that I don’t think electricity quite works the way it does in this movie.
The ending includes a pretty gratuitous deus ex machina, and I don’t know how I feel about that? It’s not entirely out of nowhere, but it’s quite obviously a stretch for that to happen to resolve everything. I’m also not fond of the way it was spoiled in a lot of marketing material right as the movie came out (and neither was the director!).
I can’t help but strongly suspect that this movie was hurt by a lot of the behind-the-scenes drama at Warner Brothers and DC. This movie was supposed to release a year ago, and now it’s part of a universe that’s officially canceled. The director was assured that technically, there’s no reason that Shazam shouldn’t be incorporated into the new DC cinematic continuity, but I have my doubts it’ll come to fruition, especially considering that this one didn’t do well in theaters (the lack of good marketing, and the announcement of canceling its continuity didn’t do favors).
AND the biggest profile villain of the hero (Black Adam) was given a spin-off movie with a big-name action star, who appeared to have no plans to crossover. The Rock was more interested in seeing his character fight Superman–something we’re unlikely to see now that the DC movie universe is rebooting (in part due to that film failing to make back enough money with its massive marketing campaign).
So while I found this movie enjoyable–good action scenes, fun characters, great humor–I guess I was really hoping for a big last hurrah for the series in its second installment. And this isn’t really that. If you were a big fan of the first movie, like I was, you’ll probably enjoy this one as well. But I can’t say you’ll enjoy it as much, partly for reasons that are not really this movie’s fault.

The Economy (Taylor’s Version)
See how much money Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour actually made
Posted October 13, 2023 - The Washington Post
Call it a gold rush: Taylor Swift is adding billions to the U.S. economy.
Swift’s record-shattering Eras Tour is set to be the most lucrative concert run in American history. But the massive production not only provided a jolt of money to sold-out stadiums — it also infused the American economy with a trickle-down flow of cash.
Now, as the show heads to movie theaters this weekend, millions more will experience — and shell out cold, hard cash for — a moment with Swift.
As she hits the silver screen, here’s a look at The Economy (Taylor’s Version).
The biggest windfall is headed straight to Swift, who stands to make as much as $4.1 billion from the Eras Tour, according to estimates from Peter Cohan, an associate professor of management at Babson College.
Ranking in the dollars
$4.1 billion - Estimated personal earnings from the Eras Tour.
That’s assuming the pop star ends up keeping the standard artist’s share of roughly 85 percent of her tour’s revenue, with average ticket prices of $456. Swift’s earnings would be the most from a single tour for any musical act to date — and more than the yearly economic output of 42 countries, including Liberia, which has more than 5 million people.
But the impact of the Eras Tour extends far beyond what Swift takes home. In one of the few efforts to assess spending by concertgoers, software company QuestionPro quizzed 592 Swifties who responded to an opt-in online survey. Based on their answers and average concert attendance, the company estimates that Swift’s fans spent about $93 million per show — yes, on tickets, but also on merchandise, travel, hotels, food and outfits.
Add all that up, and by the end of the U.S. tour, you’ve got a $5.7 billionboost to the country’s economy. That’s enough to give $440 to each person in Swift’s home state of Pennsylvania. Or almost enough to send every American a $20 bill.
(Technically $17.10 per person)
(Sorry, we don’t know how many cats personally received a $20 bill from Taylor. But it’s enough to give each of her three cats $1.9 billion.)
...Ready for it?
The mania began months before the March kickoff of the Eras Tour. Presale tickets went on sale in November — sending millions of fans into a frenzy and causing Ticketmaster to crash. A class-action lawsuit and a congressional inquiry followed, as did the ire of many Swifties.
Tickets, which started at $49, sold for many multiples of their face value on resale sites like SeatGeek.
$1,611 - Average ticket resale price on SeatGeek.
That burst of spending has revived the entertainment industry after a years-long pandemic slump.
“Swift and her ‘Eras’ tour have redefined entertainment economics,” said Chris Leyden, director of growth marketing at SeatGeek.
The loudest woman these towns have ever seen
The tour’s economic boost spread far past the walls of Swift’s stadium venues, as fans traveled from near and far to any show they could get their hands on. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia even put the Swift effect in a report — saying concertgoers provided a sizable boost to hotel revenue in May.
Hotels, restaurants and shops around the country felt the upswing, with millions of dollars flowing into the 20 U.S. cities Swift visited this summer. Cincinnati estimated that it would see about $48 million in additional economic impact, according to Visit Cincy and the Cincinnati Regional Chamber’s Center for Research and Data.
Cincinnati $48 million
Denver $148 million
Los Angeles $320 million
Kansas City $48 million
In Los Angeles, where Swift performed six shows, the California Center for Jobs and the Economy predicted a $320 million boost to the county. Kansas City tourism organization Visit KC said the region got an estimated $48 million impact from the tour’s July stop. The Common Sense Institute, which studies the state of Colorado’s economy, predicted the boom from Swift’s Denver performances would add up to $140 million statewide.
“The [Eras Tour] was a shot in the arm to a part of the regional economy that’s really been lagging,” said Mike Kahoe, chief economist for the California center. “It brought some much-needed dollars to the tourism industry.”
Hotel analytics group STR calculated tour cities produceda $208 million bump in hotel room revenue, over and above normal seasonal levels.
$208 million - Estimated additional room revenue
In Seattle, Swift set a record for single-day revenue for downtown hotels — notching $7.4 million, about $2 million more than the record set during a Major League BaseballAll-Star Game earlier the same month, according to Visit Seattle and STR.
“To put the impact into context, $208 million is basically the combined room revenue generated in New York City and Philadelphia in one week,” STR senior research analyst M. Brian Riley wrote. And that’s just for the actual nights of the tour, not including fans who arrived early orstayed longer.
Best believe they bejeweled
Swift’s fans want to embody their favorite Era — and that means splurging on elaborate outfits and costumes.
“Is there anyone here who put a lot of work, thought and preparation into lyric memorization and/or what you were going to wear?” Swift asked the crowd to loud cheers at a Los Angeles show in August.
A core accessory for any Swiftie is a few — or a few dozen — friendship bracelets to grace their wrists and to trade at shows. The jewelry, inspired by a lyric in Swift’s song “You’re On Your Own Kid,” is often handmade or bought online and boasts popular Swift lyrics.
Three million dollars in friendship bracelets sold on Etsy between April and August
One Etsy seller, Kara White, started making the bracelets with her mom earlier this year, when the tour began. They got orders for 1,500 bracelets in a single day as fans prepared for the Los Angeles shows. White and her mom have made about $15,000 this year selling bracelets.
“It just shows how much she makes her fans go crazy,” White said.
Coveted tour merchandise that were hard to nab had fans turning to internet resale sites. One of the most popular items: a $65 blue crewneck with the Eras Tour logo.
1,600% increase in blue Eras crewnecks sold on eBay from March to July
At the venues, merch lines were long — inside and at trucks parked outside. Justin Paul, a DJ, producer and creative director who teaches music business courses at UCLA Extension, came up with a conservative estimate — $864,000 for each show — for Swift’s merch sales inside venues by using the number of people at each show and an average of how much concertgoers typically spend on merch. Still, Swift is a special case.
$1,279 - Average amount each Eras Tour attendee spent:
Food/drinks: $106
Tickets: $396
Travel/lodging: $384
Merch: $159
Outfits: $234
“You look at how much consumers are spending to see Taylor Swift, and it is quite an astonishing amount,” said Dan Fleetwood, president of research and insights at QuestionPro. “And not only are they spending this money, but in a lot of cases, they’re saying they would gladly do it again.”
Judging by the QuestionPro survey respondents, the average fan spent nearly $1,300 on outfits, travel, tickets and extras for the concert.
One for the money, two for the show
All of that Swiftie spending meant restaurants, shops and security firms had to keep up. One solution: hiring temporary workers while the tour is in town.
“When Taylor Swift comes to town, she brings a surge of economic activity,” said Daniel Altman, chief economist at Instawork, which allows businesses to employ workers by the hour.
1,000% increase in demand for hourly workers within a half-mile of Swift’s Boston-area shows
Not only are there more jobs in and around Eras stadiums, butthey pay better, too: The average hourly rate offered on Instawork within a five-mile radius of Swift’s May 13 show in Philadelphia was $20.57, $2 higher than usual.
There have been longer-term lifts in employment, too. In Los Angeles, Swift’s six-day stop was estimated to generate enough revenue to fund 3,300 new jobs, according to the California Center for Jobs and the Economy. That would be enough to staff every bookstore and news stand in the L.A. area.
3,300 jobs enough to staff every bookstore and news stand in L.A.
Swift also passed on some of that karma — and cash — to her employees.
She gave every truck driver on the tour an extra $100,000 this summer, and she gifted bonuses to sound technicians, caterers, dancers and other staff, People magazine reported in August.
$55 million in bonuses to Eras Tour workers, including dancers, sound technicians and caterers
Look what Swift made them do
Swift may have been the main event, but fans shelled out for days of related festivities, with plenty of small businesses happy to bask in her afterglow. There were tour-inspired ice cream flavors in Pennsylvania, bonbons in Colorado and lattes in New Hampshire.
In Washington state, Neko Cat Cafe hosted feline-friendly “Taylor listening parties” at its two locations to commemorate the tour’s arrival. The small business made over $3,000 from the event, with ticket sales at its Bellingham location — almost 90 miles north of Seattle — 140 percent higher than on a typical Friday night.
Forty cats, all available for adoption, wore Swift-themed bandanas while humans drank glittery wine and ate “Lover”-themed cookies. Tickets, at $40 a pop, promptly sold out.
140% increase in ticket sales at Neko Cat Cafe in Bellingham, Wash.
That Midas touch extended around the country: In California, Susie Cakes sold $50,000 worth of Swift-themed cupcakes. Seattle’s Japonessa Sushi Cocina dished out $10,000 in “Reputation” sushi rolls and glitter-filled cocktails. And in Kansas City, Donutology filled orders for 20,000 Eras-themed donuts, which became a staple at “Tayl-gating” parties in the parking lot before Swift hit the stage.
In Minneapolis, Inbound Brew Co. racked up twice as much money than on a normal weekend when it hosted three nights of Eras-related festivities this summer, including trivia games, live-band karaoke and a dance party, according to general manager Emily Elmer.
“This was bigger for us than when the Super Bowl came to town in 2018,” she said.
If this was a movie
The first leg of her North American tour may be over, but Swift can’t stop, won’t stop moving … this time into movie theaters and football stadiums (when athletes are actually on the field). She has become a recognizable figure at Kansas City Chiefs games to watch her rumored paramour, tight end Travis Kelce. Her appearances have caused sales of Kelce’s jersey to jump and,in at least one case, NFL ticket prices to rise after rumors Swift would be in attendance, according to NPR.
$37 million in tickets sold for the Eras Tour concert film in the first day of pre-sales at AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters
Eras, too, is onto its next phase. In November, the pop star will take her 146-show tour international, with stops in South America, Asia, Australia and Europe. But first, Swift heads to the movies — where global pre-sales have already surpassed $100 million, according to AMC. Fans, the movie chain said, are turning up “from the largest cities to the smallest towns.”
Long story short: Swift’s economic dominance is about to begin again.
About this story:
The following songs are referenced in this story:
gold rush - The Man - ...Ready For It? - the last great american dynasty - Bejeweled - You're On Your Own, Kid - champagne problems - Karma - Look What You Made Me Do - If This Was a Movie (Taylor's Version) - Shake It Off - long story short - Afterglow - Begin Again (Taylor's Version).
Abha Bhattarai became a Swiftie during the pandemic, when she listened to “Evermore” and “Folklore” on repeat.
Rachel Lerman managed to get tickets for Swift’s Munich show, where she will be embracing her “1989” era.
Emily Sabens became a Swiftie at age 10 while performing songs from the debut album in her basement with her cousin. She was blessed with “Haunted” as a surprise song at the Eras Tour in Detroit.
Editing by Karly Domb Sadof (who is still trying to get her Eras Tour tickets), Betty Chavarria (who has a song named after her), Jennifer Liberto (mom of a Swiftie), Mike Madden (who is not a Swiftie — yet), Paola Ruano (who is going to the Eras Tour for a second time in London) and Haley Hamblin (who promises to finally listen to 1989 soon).

Delaware: A Fertile Ground for Food and Agriculture Businesses
Delaware, the second smallest state in the United States, is making a big name in the food and agriculture sector. Despite its modest size, Delaware offers a remarkably fertile environment for food and agriculture businesses to thrive. This success can be attributed to favorable geographic conditions, supportive state policies, advanced research institutions, and a robust infrastructure. These factors create a dynamic ecosystem where food and agriculture businesses can flourish.
Tumblr media
Geographic and Climatic Advantages
Delaware's geographic location on the eastern seaboard gives it a unique advantage. The state enjoys a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, which is ideal for a wide variety of crops. The fertile soil, especially in the southern part of the state, supports the growth of vegetables, grains, and fruits. Moreover, Delaware's proximity to major urban centers like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., ensures that agricultural products have easy access to large markets.
The state's diverse microclimates allow for cultivating an array of crops and raising livestock. This diversity reduces the risk associated with agricultural production and provides multiple avenues for business ventures. The variety of products grown and produced in Delaware ranges from corn and soybeans to poultry and dairy, offering vast opportunities for food processing, distribution, and retail businesses.
Supportive State Policies and Programs
The government has consistently firmly committed to supporting the Delaware agriculture industry. The Delaware Department of Agriculture offers various programs and services to assist farmers and food producers. These include financial incentives, technical assistance, and marketing support aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Delaware's agricultural products.
One of the key initiatives is the Delaware Agricultural Lands Preservation Program, which helps to protect farmland from development and ensures that it remains available for agricultural use. This program preserves the state's rural character and provides long-term security for farming businesses.
Furthermore, Delaware has implemented policies to encourage sustainable farming practices. These policies support using environmentally friendly techniques and technologies, helping farmers reduce their ecological footprint while maintaining high productivity levels. This focus on sustainability also attracts consumers and businesses that prioritize ecologically responsible products.
Advanced Research and Innovation
Delaware is home to leading research institutions like the University of Delaware, which is pivotal in advancing agricultural science and technology. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Delaware conducts cutting-edge research in plant genetics, soil health, and sustainable farming practices. This research gives farmers and businesses the knowledge and tools they need to improve yields, enhance product quality, and reduce costs.
Robust Infrastructure and Logistics
Infrastructure is critical for the success of any agricultural enterprise, and Delaware boasts a robust network that supports the food and agriculture industry. The state's transportation infrastructure, including highways, railways, and ports, facilitates the efficient movement of goods. The Port of Wilmington, for instance, is one of the busiest ports on the East Coast and a key hub for agricultural exports.
Delaware also benefits from advanced storage and processing facilities that ensure products can be efficiently handled and distributed. The state's cold storage facilities are essential for perishable goods, helping to extend shelf life and maintain quality from farm to consumer.
Moreover, Delaware's strategic location within the Mid-Atlantic region provides easy access to major markets and distribution centers, enhancing the logistical capabilities of the top agriculture companies. This connectivity ensures that Delaware-grown products can reach consumers quickly and efficiently domestically and internationally.
Delaware's geographic advantages, supportive state policies, advanced research, robust infrastructure, and collaborative industry environment create a fertile ground for food and agriculture businesses. The state's commitment to preserving farmland, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering innovation ensures its agricultural sector remains competitive and resilient. Delaware offers a unique and promising environment for businesses looking to thrive in the food and agriculture industry.
