On Tim's 12th birthday, he received his vaguely worded letter containing information about a single perilous situation his soulmate would find themselves in. It was exciting. It was nerve wracking. He couldn't wait to open it, except that his parents had been home and thought that a soulmate would be a hindrance to success. Tim didn't know where they put it until years later when one of the house keepers he employed for Drake manor called to let him know they'd found the partially burnt letter in one of the fireplaces.
Tucker's 12th birthday went very differently. His parents had thrown a party to celebrate the milestone. When he'd read the letter no one would have guessed that it was about Tim's first meeting with Damian.

LEE PING!!! MY BOY. MY ICON. MY IDOL. HE GOT BEAT IN A GAME BY A CAT BUT WON AGAINST THE CAT'S OWNER. SAID CAT WAS NAMED "MRS. RUMPLEKITTY." HE WAS A MATHLETE. HE PLAYSED THE VIOLIN IN A ROCK CONCERT WHILE ACCIDENTALLY POSING AS A ROCKSTAR. HE PROTECTED HIS FRIENDS FROM RACIST ASSHOLES. I'M PRETTY SURE HE DID IT WITHOUT HAVING TO USE VIOLENCE TOO!?! He has like a casual slighly emo-esque style. I'm 100% aromantic asexual but I would have thought that people would have had a crush on this dude because he's GENUINELY so fucking cool. I love how in the first episode, he wanted to be popular until he got framed and all of a sudden he starts OBSESSING over finding this person and going "Literally who cares about getting along with other people when some bitch comes out of nowhere to get me!?" He likes the cool news girl, Tina. I wasn't crazy about her at first but she grew on me as the series went on. Also I know that all the times he flirted with guys were probably just queerbaiting or misinterprettation or something but this is the internet so honestly? Bicon.
Also I'm kind of upset that it was probably queerbaiting/misinterpretation/something because I was totally rooting for Lee and Biffy to get together! If I could I would make a compilation of clips that show why I ship them I would.
It's about the fact that Biffy can't be seen being friends with him. It's about Lee calling him "Biffy baby" while telling him not to worry so much. It's about Lee saying "I love when you say 'we' 😊" when Biffy was mad at him. It's about them being catdads together. It's about them being the "no homo" bros. It's about them having a secret friendship hidden away from anyone who isn't close to them until one of them gets hurt or is in danger, then that goes out the window.
Biffy. The icon. The legend. He would 100% be the fan favorite. If you don't like him I don't trust you (Jk. Kind of.). Main catdad. Doting father. Secret technogeek. Clumsyass motherfucker because he's HUGE and STRONK. Gets detention accidentally because of this. ALL. THE. TIME. Got himself a reputation as a bully and rolled with it. Snarky. Was childhood friends and has a mutual crush on the lead popular girl and KNOWS it's mutual but they both don't want to be the first to say it so they tease eachother until it goes too far and runs away with Lee, I think (it's been a while). Also a bicon and loves the lead singer of the band at their school The Dudes of DarknessTM too much for me or Lee to believe he's entirely straight.
Hello! Can I talk to you about Detentionaire because the fandom is dead? If so, can I spoil things for you?
Absolutely! I've never heard of it, but I absolutely do not mind spoilers.

Yeah, the "it's like email" is a weak comparison. Not sure how else to describe it, however.
It is definitely a social media thing. Whether or not "platform" is the right word, I suppose could be for technogeeks to argue; it is functionally much like Twitter.
It is structurally different, in that you do not "join Mastodon" - you "make an account on a Mastodon instance," which will connect to a number of other Mastodon instances but not all of them. (You don't want to connect to all of them; there be some Vile Stuff on some instances.) (I say this as a hardcore I-ship-them-all dddne-reading kinktomatoist. Please do not ask for examples.)
The key part to understand: Every Mastodon instance is owned by someone. That someone makes the rules on their instance. That someone pays for the hosting of the instance; if they stop, it goes away. (I think you can move your account first, if you know about it?)
Mastodon is not "a platform" but "a system that connects thousands of individually owned platforms." And each of those that is publicly visible has had a huge rush of new members recently. Some are welcoming. Some are not. A lot are overwhelmed.
THE TL;DR VERSION:
Mastodon looks very similar to Twitter in functionality.
Mastodon's culture is radically different.
There are tech features that make the process of joining & participating very different.
Some people are gonna find their new online home on Mastodon.
Most will not, because what kept them on Twitter instead of Insta or Facebook or Tumblr or Discord, is also not on Mastodon.
So, I'm still over on Twitter (they're going to have to forcibly remove me at this rate) and I've got a Mastodon account (barely touched) and I am, of course, slowly shifting over here.
I honestly don't think Mastodon is the place for me. From everything I've seen, Masto seems to be for, not to put too fine a point on it, delicate weenies who are smug in their personal politics and don't want to deal with people criticizing them. To repeat what I was talking about over on the birdsite, I saw a Mastodon post from a Known Author, who apologized for not putting a trigger warning on "politics".
I keep going back to the post that was making the rounds a few days ago about how you have to take some responsibility for curating your online experience. It's wild to me that anyone would think a stranger would need to do that for you, especially when you have the tools at your disposal to filter it yourself*.
The other problem with Mastodon is that I thrive on pure and utter chaos.
That's why Twitter is such a good match for me and I will be sad to see it go. Where else can I get the latest covid news, followed by a huge account mocking crypto, and then a shitpost about which superheroes are best at eating ass? Nowhere else.
*Wait, does Mastodon have mute and block functions? It must. A social media service that touts itself as being a safe space has to, right?
