Lowland paca

Family Cuniculidae, pavorder Caviomorpha, suborder Hystricomorpha, order Rodentia

Also known as the spotted paca, tepezcuintle, guardatinaja, pisquinte, jaleb, conejo pintado, guanta, majás, picuro, jochi pintado, boruga, tinajo, guartinaja, gibnut, labba, lapa, and lappe.

There is another animal with a similar name, the Pacarana. But these are not the same animal. They simply have similar appearances.

They are mainly quiet and nocturnal. They dig burrows about 2 metres below the surface with usually more than one exit and are great climbers and swimmers.

They will often seek water to escape predation as they can hold their breaths for several minutes.

They are omnivorous and important seed dispersers. They love fruit and will also eat stems, leaves, tubers, roots, nuts, seeds, and herbs.

They will also eat from carcasses to supplement protein. They eat flesh less often than plants though. They lean more towards herbivorous in the wild and omnivorous in captivity, but have been known to eat flesh in the wild.

There is some conflicting information about their social structure with some sources saying they are largely solitary, and others saying that they are monotonous and form small family groups. Caring for young anywhere from 8 weeks to 6 months.

The lowland paca (Cuniculus paca), also known as the spotted paca, is a large rodent found in tropical and sub-tropical America, from East-Central Mexico to Northern Argentina.  The animal is called paca in most of its range, but tepezcuintle (original Aztec language name) in most of Mexico and Central America. The word paca comes from a word in the Tupi language that designates the animal but also means 'awaken, alert'. Tepezcuintle is of Nahuatl origin, meaning 'mountain-dog', from tepetl, 'mountain' + itzquintli, 'dog'.

The lowland paca has coarse fur without underfur, dark brown to black on the upper body and white or yellowish on the underbelly. It usually has three to five rows of white spots along its sides, against a dark grey background. It has thick strong legs, with four digits in the forefeet and five in the hind feet (the first and fifth are reduced); the nails function as hooves. The tail is short and hairless. The zygomatic arch is expanded laterally and dorsally and is used as a resonating chamber - a unique feature among mammals.

An adult lowland paca weighs between 13 and 26 lbs. Each litter has one young lowland paca, sometimes two. They usually have one to three young a year with a gestation period of about 115–120 days. Pacas are sexually mature at about 1 year. A paca usually lives up to 13 years.

The lowland paca is mostly nocturnal and solitary and does not vocalize very much. It lives in forested habitats near water, preferably smaller rivers, and dig simple burrows about 2 m (6 ft 7 in) below the surface, usually with more than one exit. It can also sometimes live in burrows created by other animals. The lowland paca is a good swimmer and usually heads for the water to escape danger, as it can stay under water for several minutes. It also is a very good climber and it searches for fruit in the trees.

The lowland paca can be considered an important seed distributor, since its diet includes leaves, stems, roots, seeds, and fruit, especially avocados, mangos and zapotes. It sometimes stores food.

The lowland paca is considered an agricultural pest for several food crops. Its meat is highly prized. It is plentiful in protected habitats, and hence not in danger of extinction, but overall its numbers have been much reduced because of hunting and habitat destruction. It is easily bred and raised in farms, although the taste is said to be inferior (perhaps unpleasant) when farmed. Some of the lowland paca predators include cats, coyotes, bush dogs, crocodiles, and boa constrictors.

Se trata de una tejedora (la señora tepezcuintle para los chinantecos), esposa de un venado, que adopta o concibe unos gemelos. En algunas versiones se embaraza mientras teje y luego, embarazada, teje las distintas capas del cielo en su telar. Los gemelos que nacen de ella serán Sol y Luna, y tendrán muchas aventuras. Entre ellas, matan a un monstruo de ojos brillantes, ahorcándolo con un hilo o con un ceñidor de tejido. Luego arroja una bola de hilo al cielo y así inauguran el tiempo, y trepan entonces por el cabo suelto. También violan a una señora, que los maldice y les avienta palos de tejer –la cara de la luna queda marcada por esos palos–. La señora, furiosa, tira entonces su tejido ensangrentado sobre la tierra y desde entonces las mujeres deben menstruar.

oh absolutely! i haven't hardly had any acne since i've been here – just a few pimples here and there, but nothing close to the breakouts i used to have.

i generally have more energy! i've been eating more processed foods over the past month since my partner has been ill and i've had too much on my plate to cook how i like, and have noticed such a drastic decline in my energy + mental health all around.

i've been transitioning back to eating animal products and they settle so differently in my body! my diet is still 90% plant based, but i also eat eggs and fish, and have tried a lil chicken from my lil farm and a white meat animal called tepezcuintle that my boyfriend caught. it is sooo different to consume animal products when you know that they havent been pumped with chemicals/stress/hormones/pesticides/etc

the biggest change is definitely with my skin! its not purely food based, but also the water im drinking is from the mountains (not full of chlorine n whatever else), the vast majority of the products i use are biodegradable (i veeeery rarely use bleach // the majority of the detergent is ecofriendly which i use for laundry and dishes), and im exposed to much less air pollution.

such a huge difference here! i also feel its much easier as well to maintain this kind of lifestyle because so many people farm so its easy to buy local 💗

Ataco ist ein touristisches Dorf in den Bergen, nahe der guatemaltekischen Grenze. Es ist bekannt für seine buntbemalten Häuser und den hochqualitativen Kaffee der Region. Mein neuer Arbeitsplatz, das Hotel Alicante liegt unweit von Ataco und ist von einem riesigen Garten umgeben. Es gibt ein Restaurant, einen Pool, einen Fitnessraum, eine Sauna, Pferde und das Animal Rescue Center, wo ich arbeite. Gemeinsam mit dem Pfleger und einem französischen Freiwilligen füttere ich jeden Tag die Tiere, säubere die Käfige oder arbeite im Garten. Wir machen auch Führungen mit Gästen. In einer riesigen Voliere sind die Papageien, Schildkröten und Pfauen untergebracht. Die übrigen Bewohner des Centers sind ein Tepezcuintle, 2 Cotuzas, eine Riesenschildkröte, ein Gato zonte (Kleine Wildkatze), 3 Affen, eine Boa und jede Menge Ziegen, Kaninchen und Hühner. Leider geschieht hier nicht alles zum Besten der Tiere, denn einige Tiere kommen eben doch aus freier Wildbahn und sind nicht nur zur Pflege hier, sondern eher für die Hotelgäste. Die Käfige reinigen wir mit Chemikalien, oft finde ich Plastikmüll in der Voliere und manche Käfige sind einfach zu klein oder verdreckt und nass. Der Pfleger erhält gerade mal 6$ pro 7-Stunden-Tag, normal sind hier eigentlich 12$.

Dennoch könnte ich mir kaum einen besseren Ort als Freiwillige vorstellen. Die Arbeit ist entspannt, wir können unbegrenzt im Restaurant essen und Arseño, der Pfleger ist eine Seele von Mensch. Wir waren bereits mit ihm Pupusas essen und seine Tochter hat uns die Haare geschnitten.

Eduardo, der Besitzer pendelt halbwöchig zwischen seinem Haus in San Salvador und dem Hotel. Wenn er da ist, nimmt er uns auf Ausflüge mit. Er hat uns z.B. schon seine Kaffeeplantage und seine Thermalbäder gezeigt. Manchmal frage ich mich, ob es eigentlich etwas gibt, dass er nicht besitzt. Ein anderes Mal waren wir in einem Reptilien Zentrum und haben uns Riesenpythons angeschaut, da waren mir die Thermalbäder doch lieber.

Eduardo ist der erste Mensch, der mir erzählt hat, El Salvador sei sicherer zum Reisen als Guatemala. Das liegt wahrscheinlich auch daran, dass ich bisher in der Hauptstadt gewohnt habe und die ist genauso unsicher wie Guatemala City. Aber hier, in der ländlichen Idylle ist davon nichts zu spüren, ich bin sogar schon allein Bus gefahren und ich wurde weniger bei Einkäufen beschwindelt als in Malawi. Einmal hatte ich mein Geld vergessen und der Busfahrer hat mich umsonst mitgenommen. Fazit: Wie sicher das Land ist, hängt also von der Region ab und davon wen man fragt.

Torogoz

Esta es un ave relativamente pequeña, del tamaño de un puño de una persona adulta, en promedio mide 34 cm de largo y pesa unos 65 gramos. Tiene el cuerpo mayoritariamente verde con la espalda y el vientre rojizo y además presenta diversas tonalidades de verde, celeste tornasol, blanco, amarillo, anaranjado y negro.

Tucanes

Los tucanes son aves de plumas y pico de colores muy llamativos. Llegan a medir hasta 65 centímetros y pesan de 130 hasta 680 g. Su pico es largo con una longitud aproximada de 20 cm y alcanzando su talla definitiva después de varios meses. Tiene pequeños dientes como sierras, llega a medir la tercera parte de su tamaño y es muy ligero por las numerosas cámaras que tiene por lo que no le dificulta el vuelo

Es  una especie de roedor histricomorfo de la familia Cuniculidae que vive en las proximidades de los cursos de agua de los bosques tropicales, desde México y Centroamérica, pasando por Paraguay y el norte de Argentina, hasta el noreste de Uruguay, a menos de 2000 msnm
