Why in vol1 did Jack make an obscure bowling reference to Tony. This wouldn't bother me much if just Jack understood it, but he say Tony did too?? Why? Do they bowl often?? This is haunting me

Looking at Tony and Jack’s relationship:

I’ve seen some discussion on if they were really friends. Jack refers to Tony as his best friend by default because Jack spends so little significant time with anyone else. The bathroom cowboy would probably be his other most consistent interaction.

I don’t think this is put in to signify a bond between him and Tony, but to highlight the isolation Jack has with society. His only & best friend is someone he has maybe one superficial work conversation with a day & he knows little to no information about. Some of the conversations they have aren’t even to each other but hallucinations Jack has. It highlights the mental state of Jack & that he truly has no one in his life at the beginning of his story.

Jerry being a big part of saving Jack from Tony acts as a catalyst for Jack opening himself up to making meaningful connections. Jerry took a bullet for him. The contrast of Jack & Tony’s friendship makes what Jerry & Jack have so much deeper. One of my favorite pairs in literary history. Truly love this series. So many layers.

My favorite part about that end scene with Tony, Jack and Jerry is that while Jerry's being his goofy self, making jokes while they're held at gunpoint, his body language is always very clearly protective of Jack.

"Tony shoved me forward so hard I nearly fell on my face,e but Marlboro caught me and helped me along,"

Marlboro laughed and took another step back to stay right at my side

Marlboro stepped back with me [...]

"If you're going to execute people, do me first!" He jumped between us, [...]

"Move out of the way!" Tony commanded, but Marlboro pretended he couldn't hear the order and bent down to help me up.

Marlboro pulled me to my feet and handed me the crutches

"You keep going. I'm going to lead him back the other way. He can't chase both of us."
