i miss you (more than anything)
zhongli x gn!reader
- scenario; 2.4k words - modern!au - fluff - jealousy
————————————————————
zhongli isn’t one for jealousy— usually.
title from mitski - francis forever.
requested by anon.
————————————————————
“an excellent choice, sir.”
again with the nicknames...
slender fingers pick up a considerably stylized box, the smooth white a stark contrast to dark, glove-adorned palms. zhongli turns the box over in his hands, inspecting the various fine print explanations splayed along the edges of the plastic. now this is...
BANG!
clink.
zhongli barely stifles a flinch at the sound of the door slamming, hinges squeaking and metal lock clicking into place with a whirlwind of motion. amber eyes flick up to the doorway, then back down to the polished counter.
five minutes late.
he sets the ice cube he’s handling into a wine glass after a brief pause, beginning to fashion up a flute of apple cider vinegar. the pattering of lively footsteps against tiled flooring rapidly grows nearer, clattering to a halt directly across the bar from where he stands.
“hey there, mister zhongli! looking just about as boring as ever!”
hu tao plops into the cushioned chair, swiveling back and forth on the seat and leaning forward to watch him pour the concoction.
(it’s designated for customers of course— though that’s only usually. she happens to claim, to his exasperation, that she has “owner privileges”; whatever that could possibly mean when the place itself is meant to serve the needs of customers: that would include the spacing and chairs they may potentially desire when they enter the premises. unfortunately, he’s given up on understanding on her whims.)
from his position across the counter, zhongli absentmindedly spies the edge of a bright-red butterfly wing from underneath her outfit’s loose, flowing sleeves, the simple pendant string looped twice around her wrist.
swallowtail.
it’s the name (”like the butterfly, zhongli! the butterfly!”) of the establishment he’s currently employed at and is “run” by the granddaughter of a distant relative (though the bar is legally owned by said relative’s family). due to his— well, rather particular (per say) spending habits and a lack of mindfulness regarding the matter of what they liked to call savings (why would there be a need for these “savings”? he’d like to protest he’s traversed life well enough without them), he’d been pushed into putting the multitude of experience from past jobs into this one.
and well, here he is now.
chop. chop.
two evenly-sliced apple slices tip over from against the blade of the knife and onto the wooden cutting board. fetching a sprig of mint from the small potted plant just below the rack of knives (growing lights and shelving did wonders in the spontaneous lighting of the nightclub), zhongli finished decorating the non-alcoholic drink of choice for the pseudo-proprietress. who knew what havoc she’d cheerfully throw herself into, archons forbid, if it were liquor. she’s already enough of a handful as it is.
he sighs in resignation and slides the beverage over. the ice tinkles in the glass confines. he does have a favor to ask today after all. hu tao gives the drink a sniff, then puffs her cheeks in mock anger.
“no alcohol? booooo, you’re such a rock.”
she takes a generous sip anyway.
“so, what did you call me here for? not very zhongli-like for you to ask something of lil’ ol’ me. archons, have you been replaced?”
she squints at him judgingly, then raises an eyebrow when he hesitates to answer.
“doesn’t look that way, old man.”
zhongli can feel the beginnings of a headache forming between his brows. he waves his hand dismissingly as if flicking away her babbling nonsense.
“i have a favor to ask of you.”
“oh-ho?”
hu tao smirks playfully and pushes the half-finished drink aside, craning her neck forward.
“what can i do for our esteemed mister zhongli, hm? hehe.”
zhongli clenches his fist under the edge of the woodwork in an effort to calm his raging annoyance.
(it doesn’t help.)
he should just ask, shouldn’t he..?
“..i’ve been pondering this for a number of days now, but nothing quite appropriate for the occasion has happened to come to mind... do you happen to have any gift ideas for...”
he looks to the side to avoid eye contact and trails off, but hu tao immediately gets the memo.
“ohhh..” her smile only grows wider, “this is for your daaaate—”
zhongli’s face flushes the slightest tinge of rosy pink and he hisses a sharp “shush!” through gritted teeth. and here he had thought she couldn’t get on his nerves beyond how she’d already acted thus far...
the cheshire grin on her face still continues to climb.
“well, you’ve definitely asked the right person! how about...”
some new polaroid film? is what she had proposed.
“it’s not some fancy-schmancy anniversary gift, no? just a date! a date! don’t worry yourself so much over it— no, don’t look at me like that. if you called me over to ask about it, you’re deeeefinitely losing hair over this— okay, okay, i got it! don’t kick me out! old man... sheesh. why don’t you get some more polaroid film and wrap it up all nice? useful and an excuse to take more pictures together! i know, i know, i’m a genius— mmph!”
he can still hear her voice bouncing around in his head (”can’t believe you’re getting rid of your boss, mister zhongli! didn’t take you for the rebellious type—”). zhongli brings his hand up to his temple and breathes out another sigh. it’s not like her idea was a terrible one; if anything, it were a wonderfully exquisite proposal— not that he would tell her.
“i’d like to purchase this, if you would.”
he hands the box over to the shopkeep, who scans the package and rings up the bill. indiscreetly, he feels up the pocket of his jacket. thank the archons he remembered his wallet today. it would certainly be embarrassing to put this particular item on your tab.
“sure thing, mister zhongli. i’m assuming this is a gift,” they eye him knowingly, “so would you like it wrapped up?”
deja vu, his brain mutters, this is very much deja vu. he shuts it up promptly.
“not this time, but you have my sincerest thanks for the offer. i’d like to wrap it myself.” he can feel his (generally..) expressionless face flaring up the faintest hint of pink and berates his mind once more. only when it comes to you...
acquiring the purchased item, zhongli dips his head in acknowledgement as he heads out. the plants hanging from baskets strung along the ceiling sway their leaves to and fro, nearly catching a wayward lock of his hair. he smooths the stray strand back.
“thank you once again, aether. let lumine know they can drop by for some tea again whenever they’d like for me, please.”
the bell hanging over the doorway tinkles when he pushes it open, and the bustle of the busy harbor seeps into the tranquility of the shop. aether nods and waves a hand at him in return, resting an arm on the cash register.
“come again.”
-
while he’d imagined many ways your planned outing could play out, this was certainly not one of them.
he’s approaching the meeting spot you two had decided on (right in front of the flowering quince tree near the park; its blooms resemble those of simpler, smaller silk flowers, and it happens to be quite the scenic location to wait) when he spies not only your stature, but another figure residing right besides you.
who...?
as he steps closer, he can hear your laughter, the kind that he knows bubbles out of your chest and escapes your lips unconsciously. your amusement isn’t lost on your companion apparently, because they smirk teasingly, letting out a full-blown laugh of their own.
“oh, zhongli, over here!”
your voice snaps him out of his meandering thoughts, and he stops fiddling with his earring (when did he start doing that?), continuing forward from where he’d paused in his observations of this newcomer. something starts to bloom in his chest, small and bittersweet. he’s not sure what to make of it.
following your beckoning, zhongli finally makes his way to your side, mentally taking note of your.. friend? he doesn’t remember you mentioning anyone like this before though. surely he would remember your friends, no?
his earring sways in the wind, white tassel fluttering cheerfully.
“zhongli, this is my friend kaeya. i met him when i made that trip to mondstadt awhile back, remember that? oh, and kaeya, this is my boyfriend zhongli.”
(the little dragon curled up in his heart preens at your introduction of him, small and sweet.)
ice blue meets molten gold when zhongli’s eyes dart up to make eye contact with this stranger. they squint at him, assessing, then dip into the makings of a playful twinkle. a hand reaches out for a handshake, which he returns in equal measure. interesting...
“he got a little lost touring liyue and i happened to see him here in the park. small world, huh? i know it was our day love, but do you mind if we take him around for today?”
zhongli smiles appeasingly, gentle and assuring as always. he can recognize the slightly nervous look on your face, one that’s a stark contrast to how energetic you’d looked just a few minutes ago. if kaeya’s company makes you happy and you’d like to take him around, then who is he to refuse your request? you two will have more time to spend with just the two of you later, he reasons with himself. accompanying your friend, and in turn his acquaintance, is nothing big.
(and no, it’s certainly not you calling him love that makes him cave.)
“of course we can.”
tugging at the string of his eyepatch, kaeya swiftly ties his hair back and adjusts the collar of his shirt. “so, where to first?”
zhongli takes your hand in his, squeezing softly. you squeeze back.
getting along together should come just fine.
-
he takes it back.
he takes it all back.
he’d accepted it at first because, well, this was your friend. he shouldn’t be controlling who you interact with nor who befriended you - that’s not up to him. it shouldn’t ever be. however—  with every passing moment that kaeya inched closer to you, taking up the entirety of your attention and bringing that bright, bright grin to your face—
(this was supposed to be your date. just the two of you. he hasn’t seen you in a month; surely he can feel a bit selfish, right?)
the three of you turn the corner to an intricately-themed restaurant and pause, where even zhongli looks appreciatively at the beautifully grown bamboo stalks lining the edges of its front walls.
“wanmin restaurant,” kaeya reads, craning his neck up to gaze at the signboard. bold red calligraphy is sprawled across the rough-cut wood. “awfully simple name for such a stunning place, isn’t it?”
if he weren’t stewing in a pot of conflicted emotions, zhongli would surely inform him of how carefully selected this title was, how it represented more than just a name, how it hid at least several decades worth of effort and teachings— but as it is, he (really, of all people) has no patience for that at the moment.
first tugging on the hem of your outfit, zhongli then takes you by the elbow and hastily leads you forward to the glass doors of the establishment. he grasps your hand in his as usual, but something must be off, because you twitch a little and look at him curiously.
he turns his head away, lips pursed just the slightest.
“let us dine here for the time being. it is an appropriate time and place, after all.”
the sun shines brightly in the clear sky as if illuminating his words.
kaeya raises an eyebrow, singular eye looking on inquisitively and arms crossed, then moves further ahead of you both once more. the corner of his mouth dips in a clear show of mirth. bowing with one arm held at the waist, one not unalike a formality from a server, he looks straight into zhongli’s eyes and holds the door open for entrance.
“that sounds like an excellent idea. well, if you would.”
-
“thanks for the tour around you two.”
kaeya hums his thanks with a cheerful lilt to his voice as you all stand under the porchlight of zhongli’s house.
(it’s not the largest abode, but it’s cozy and sweet, and it’s definitely enough for the both of you whenever you decide to stay over. tonight is one of those nights, and they may as well become more frequent after the trip you took abroad.)
his car keys reflect the glow of the bulb, swinging around his finger in loops. they clink noisily, metal against metal, and he grabs them all at once, halfway through another turn. in his car sits a box of treasure-themed artifacts, likely old and had found its way into your hands somehow. zhongli knows you’d been meaning to give them to someone, but he hadn’t known it were kaeya— either way, the artifacts that’d been laying on his shelves for weeks were now handed off.
ruffling your hair, kaeya pulls you in for a brief hug; although zhongli can feel the bitter pang in his chest, he stays where he stands, keeps it still and small. he can wait.
that said, the moment kaeya drives off, he’s hauling you into the house and curling up on the couch, pulling you onto his lap and tugging you into his arms. the long thought over gift sits patiently on the counter. it’s waited the entirety of today; it can wait another.
right now, he needs you.
your body sinks against his, relaxing from the lively, though exhausting, day. slumped against his chest, he burrows his head in the crook of your shoulder and cuddles you, nuzzling into your neck. finally, you’re home. home with him.
it’s warm...
“..it was our day...”
you shift your head at his mumbling, lifting his chin to presumably look at his expression. your attention is his now. not kaeya’s. not anyone else’s. just his.
(his eyes are soft and droopy, smudged red making them look especially mellow in the dim lighting, and lips pushed into the slightest pout. he knows what you’re seeing when you gaze at him fondly, and you can almost see the puppy eyes he sports. how unusual of him.)
“someone’s a little jealous here, hmmm?”
you drag out the syllables teasingly, and from lips that are pressing kisses against your skin, he responds a little muffled—
“perhaps.”

Those Things That Couples Do
Come to think of it, it wasn’t such a lame idea. Not lame at all, Dean thought, to the extent he might even have to thank Sam later. Well, maybe not outright thank him, but definitely bake a cherry pie for Eileen (her favorite; the woman sure knew how to enjoy life). It felt nice, lying on the bed with Cas in the semi-darkness, Christmas lights on the dresser and a couple of the apple cider and cinnamon scented candles Cas liked so much (and Dean grumbled about but secretly enjoyed too) being the only source of light. It felt cozy. Safe. They talked in hushed voices so as not to disturb the quiet magic of the bubble they had created in that moment, and dammit, but Dean was grateful to his brother and soon-to-be sister-in-law for this particular chick-flick.
“So, you sure you want this to go on your list as the first item?” Dean nudged Cas gently with an elbow. “Sick of my cooking already? I’m hurt, man,” he added, only half-jokingly.
The idea Eileen pitched to them was to write down three items each to reflect their hopes and plans for the upcoming year. At first, Dean laughed when Sam handed him a blue envelope with four blank craft paper cards to be written on. He had been about to suggest Sam find someone more age-appropriate to participate in that particular brand of cute (Dean could almost see the faces Claire and Kaia would make at the suggestion), but Cas’s quiet ‘It’s a lovely idea’ made him silently accept the package at the last second. This provided Sam with the pleasure of witnessing his older brother biting his tongue and smiling reassuringly at Cas who’d been busy searching Dean’s face for a reaction.
Per the rules Sam had explained to them, they were supposed to write down their plans (which they were encouraged to discuss, because that’s apparently what couples do) and complete a bonus task – individually, this time – describing where they see themselves next year at Christmas. Then, they were to seal their envelope and give it to Sam and Eileen for safekeeping, accepting theirs in exchange. That way next year there would be an additional reason to spend Christmas together and see which things have come to pass.
“Stop fishing for a compliment. You know your cooking is delicious.” Cas turned to look at Dean. “I want to be able to do nice things for you, Dean. Like you do for me. Cooking for people you care about is how you show affection and those small, but meaningful gestures go a long way. I’d love to be able to surprise you with a breakfast pie in bed, or make soup for when you catch a cold, or-“ Dean interrupted him with a chaste and gentle kiss on the lips. “You had me at the breakfast pie, Cas. Cooking and baking: 101 it is.” Cas smiled, reached for Dean’s hand, and pressed a kiss to his knuckles. Laying back on the pillow, he rested Dean’s hand on his belly, gently stroking the fingers. Dean closed his eyes and sighed contentedly.
“What will you put as your first item?” Cas asked a moment later.
“That’s easy,” Dean murmured into Cas’s shoulder. “Beach vacay. Never had the time for that before. What do you think about some sand between our toes? Maybe even skinny-dipping with enough margaritas?”
“You do look extremely hot in those aviators of yours,” Cas replied in a thoughtful voice, as if mulling it over. “And skinny-dipping does sound promising. A beach vacation certainly belongs on that list.”
“Cas, if you want me naked and in sunglasses, that can be arranged anytime, anywhere.”
“I want you in those cut-off shorts of yours, and then I want you out of them,” Cas continued in a low voice, and Dean felt the hairs on his arm stand up under Castiel’s fingertips. “I want to explore your sun-kissed skin and count the freckles on your back. I want you to enjoy yourself in all the ways that appeal to you, so yes. You’re writing that down. I’m taking you to the beach.”
“Just like that?” Dean asked, teasingly. “Pretty goal-oriented, aren’t you?”
Cas glared at him; Christmas lights caught in his dark blue eyes. “I was a Seraph, Dean. Goal-oriented was in the job description.”
“Bossy,” Dean suggestively wiggled his eyebrows.
“You like that.”
“Touché.”
Cas turned on his side, facing Dean. They were lying so close now they breathed the same air, noses just shy of touching. Dean took Cas’s hand and laced their fingers, nudging a knee between Cas’s thighs. “What else is on your list?” Dean asked.
Cas didn’t answer right away, and Dean closed his eyes to bask in the warmth of their bodies.
“There’s a small plot of land behind the bunker,” Cas began, “I was wondering whether it’s okay with you and Sam if I make a garden there?” He sounded uncertain, for some unknown reason, and Dean frowned at that. “It wouldn’t be anything fancy, just some flowerbeds with sunflowers or maybe lavender-“
“Cas,” Dean interjected, still frowning, “why would you even ask? You don’t need anyone’s permission to do what you want to do, come on. The bunker belongs to you just as much it does to me or Sammy or Eileen or the rest of our extended family.” He propped himself up on one elbow and gently freed his hand from Castiel’s hold to cup his cheek. “If you want a garden, I’ll help you make one. Or just as happily will mind my own business if it’s something you want to do on your own. Okay?”
“Thank you, Dean,” Cas whispered, earnestly. And it wasn’t about the garden, really. It was about being reassured he belonged, was wanted. Accepted.
“You should definitely add the garden to your list, Cas. And, while we’re on the topic, there was actually something I wanted to ask you about.” Dean cleared his throat, his heart rate quickened. He’d been thinking about this for quite a while, but never seemed to find the right moment to broach the topic. Frankly, he’d never felt brave enough to do so. Why mess up a good thing? But the idea lived in his head rent free, and there was no lying to himself, no tricking his mind out of it. “What would you say about a real garden, though?  With an apple tree, some benches, maybe even a gazebo? Where you can plant all kinds of flowers to appease those honeybees of yours?”
“That- That sounds lovely, Dean,” Cas replied, obviously a little bit at a loss. “What do you have in mind?”
Dean was grateful it was dark in the room because he could feel himself blushing, chest burning as if someone had put a hot iron on it. He took a deep breath that didn’t do much to lessen the anxiety.
“Remember, back in Sioux Falls, Bobby’s old property?” Dean paused, waiting for Castiel to nod in agreement. “So, it’s all still there. It’s a pretty big plot of land, and the house burned down, obviously, but I was thinking,” the words kept jumping one in front of the other, and Dean felt the blush deepen, desperately hoping Cas would understand what he was trying to say. “I ain’t that bad at rebuilding things, and, of course, it’s gonna be quite a lot of work, but who doesn’t like a fixer-upper, right? There’s the salvage yard, too, we can do something with that. I’m sure Bobby wouldn’t mind, and there shouldn’t be any problems with the documents, given who’s the sheriff in town. And that way you and I get to be closer to Claire, and Donna, the whole gang-“
“You and I?” Cas asked quietly, and Dean took a deep breath, grateful for the interjection.
“You and I. And some bees, apparently,” Dean gave Cas a weak smile, searching his eyes.
Green met blue, and for the better part of a minute (eternity, really) Cas just kept looking at him silently. Dean’s heart was hammering in his chest so loudly, he wondered if maybe he just couldn’t hear Cas’s answer because of the pounding in his ears. But Castiel’s lips didn’t move, and Dean felt like he couldn’t breathe, like he needed to get out before he went into a full-blown panic attack. It was too much. Why would Cas want to leave the bunker? It was way safer there. There were other people, hunters, coming and going, Sam and Eileen lived barely an hour away, why would he even consider moving in with Dean, let alone-
Suddenly, Cas was on Dean, left hand on Dean’s pillow for support, right hand cupping Dean’s face. Cas pressed kisses everywhere, holding on to Dean like it was the last thing on Earth worth doing. Cas moved his hand into Dean’s hair, gripping tight, and Dean moaned, capturing Cas’s mouth with his own, deepening the kiss. Dean’s anxiety turned into exhilaration, because that was very clearly a yes, and somewhere at the back of his mind he wondered if maybe he’d just suffered a mild heart attack. In mere seconds, though, his body went pliant under Cas’s weight, the kiss grew even more urgent and heated. Dean’s brain short-circuited, the only thing that registered was the press of Cas’s groin to his own, the sounds Cas was making, the texture of his tongue, the softness of his palms, his smell, his taste, the overwhelming need to be closer, to become one, to forget there ever was an outside world at all. But as Dean slipped his hands under Cas’s T-shirt, Cas groaned and broke the kiss, panting. He pressed his forehead to Dean’s, eyes closed and breathing heavy.
“I believe we’ve gotten carried away,” Cas said, hoarsely. “We still have to finish the lists before Sam leaves for Eileen’s.”
“Screw Sam,” Dean rasped, “I don’t care, just take off your clothes and keep kissing me senseless.”
Cas growled and bit his lip to keep himself from grinding.
“There will be no screwing Sam,” he said in a low voice. “We finish the lists, give Sam the envelope, bid him goodnight,” Cas took a deep breath, his body looming over Dean. “And then we pick up right where we left off.”
“Fuck, Cas,” Dean whined.
“Patience, Dean,” Cas pressed a kiss behind his ear, where he knew Dean was especially sensitive. “All in due time.”
With that, Castiel got up, went to click his bedside lamp on, fluffed his pillow, propped it against the headboard, and took the writing supplies from the nightstand. When he got back on the bed, he made sure to leave a few inches of space between them.
Dean groaned. “Fuck my life,” he muttered, but took a couple of deep breaths, willing his heart rate to friggin’ slow down already.  He sat up and reached to switch on the lamp on his side of the bed. He watched Cas for a moment before clarifying, “Yes to the house, though?”
Cas looked at him, pen pausing in the middle of a sentence. “I love you, Dean. Yes to the house.”
Dean grinned. “So, two down, one to go. Item number three for 2021?”
Castiel chewed on the cap, thoughtfully. “This one is less specific, but I’d like to try things I haven’t tried before. Unusual food, new experiences, all kinds of activities – with you.”
“Cas, I swear, if you hadn’t stopped just now, I’d have given you a thing or two to cross out from that bucket list,” Dean smiled, cockily.
Cas grinned. “I should think so.”
“Just say the word,” Dean winked, “and we can go baptize the library.”
“Noted. Let’s just not traumatize your brother any further.”
“He’ll live.”
Cas sighed, a mix of fondness and exasperation. “We’ll get back to this conversation as soon as we’re finished with the task at hand. What’s your item number three for the list?”
“Well,” Dean sat up straighter to get himself into business mode, “I’d love to spend more time with family. Get to know them better, maybe set up some family traditions? I don’t know if everyone will appreciate the idea, but it would be kinda awesome.” He glanced at the framed photos proudly sitting on his shelf.
“I think it’s a wonderful thing to put on your list,” Castiel reached for his hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, “and I don’t have a shadow of a doubt, everyone will be thrilled.”
“They’d better be. Otherwise, they’ll be missing out on the greatest feasts humanity’s ever known.”
“Yes,” Cas agreed easily, “among other things.”
Dean smiled and reached for his own supplies.
For the next five minutes the only sound that filled the room was rustling of paper. Having finished writing, Dean clicked his pen off. “So, what’s with the bonus task? The one where we describe where we see ourselves this time next year?”
Cas bent the card he was writing on in half and slid it into the envelope. “We’re not supposed to discuss it, but, seeing that we will be exchanging our predictions next year, I figure we just address it to each other?”
“Let’s do that,” Dean nodded. “So, no consulting, huh?”
Castiel hummed. “If we were to respect the rules. You know, though, my prediction doesn’t make much of a secret,” he shrugged, smiling. “This time next year, and all the years to come, I see myself watching a Christmas movie with you. I can’t keep up with the plot, really, because mostly I’m watching you watching the movie, watching you smile, listening to you laugh. And I am overwhelmed by how grateful I am for everything that has led me there, in that moment. I’m happy. I’m with you.”
Dean’s throat felt tight and his eyes started prickling with tears somewhere between ‘all the years to come’ and ‘watching you watching the movie’. Cas was looking at him with such adoration, reverence even, blue eyes glistening, pen and paper forgotten.
“Yeah,” Dean said, wrapping Cas in a bear hug. “Yeah.” He hid his face in the crook of Castiel’s neck and felt an awkward kiss being pressed to the side of his head. “You’re such a sap, man,” he breathed a somewhat wet laugh. “You’re such a sap, and I wouldn’t change a single thing about you. I hope you know that.”
“I know,” Cas mumbled, “I know.”
“You should still put all of that in writing. You know, for posterity.”
“I will. Will you write yours?”
Dean withdrew a little to give Cas a kiss on the cheek. “I will. But I’m gonna need you to bear with me, ‘cause for once in my life I would actually like to stick to the rules.” He caught Cas’s eyes, “Is that okay with you?” he asked, with a hint of a mischievous smile.
“Of course, Dean.”
“Good. Good.” Dean grinned. “And Cas? I love you, too.”
***
Eileen was supposed to pick him up in about an hour, so Sam sat at his desk browsing true crime documentaries on Netflix when Dean burst in his room without knocking.
“Would you appreciate it if I barged into your room like that?” Sam asked flatly, not looking up from the screen.
“We both know that’s an empty threat,” Dean replied without missing a beat. “Not with those delicate sensibilities of yours.”  He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively.
Sam bristled, “You guys were doing it against the kitchen sink! A man should expect the kitchen to be a safe space!”
“Yes, yes,” Dean nodded vigorously, “he should. But it’s still ill-advised.”
Sam closed the lid of his laptop with a click . “Please, tell me you’ve got the envelope and I can go see my girl and bring home the victory of getting you and Cas to participate?”
“Sure thing, Sammy,” Dean dropped the envelope in question on the desk. “Take good care of that for us,” he winked at his brother mischievously. “Cas has already stashed yours in some dusty old book. And hey,” he added in a more serious voice, “tell Eileen thank you?”
“Wait, really?” Sam started, but Dean was already out in the hall.
“Can’t talk, gotta run, Cas says he wants to try new things, and believe me, Sammy, I am gonna deliver!”
“TMI, jerk!” Sam yelled after him, leaning his chair back on two legs to try and catch sight of his older brother.
“Drive safe, bitch!” Dean yelled back from down the hall.
Sam sighed and picked up the blue envelope titled Dean & Cas: 2021 Edition in Castiel’s neat handwriting. The envelope wasn’t sealed properly, and as soon as Sam turned it over in his hands the contents slipped out onto the desk.
“You’re so whipped, Dean,” Sam muttered under his breath picking up the papers. One of the cards fell onto the floor, and as Sam leaned to pick it up, he recognized Dean’s handwriting. Not his finest hour, he would figure later, but the eyes started skimming the text before the brain could actually approve the action.
Hey, Cas. So, we’re talking this time next year, huh? Let’s see. I’m most probably sitting on the couch with you, and we’re in the middle of binge-watching one of those shows you like or watching a documentary. I can’t really tell, because I’m having trouble focusing on what’s going on on the screen. The reason probably being that I have this ring in my pocket, and I keep thinking I should come up with more fitting words. I keep overanalyzing things, wondering if this is even something you might want. And then, we open the envelope, and I’m giving you this little piece of paper, and you start reading it. And I- I can see you frowning in concentration, and it’s been a year since I wrote this, and I still haven’t found the words, because really there are no words to even begin to describe what we have. So- So I take your hand, I kiss your knuckles, and I slip the ring on your finger, and I hope-
Man, I hope I get to spend the rest of my life with you.
With a dopey smile, Sam slipped the card back into the envelope, sealing it carefully. “So whipped,” he repeated quietly, but proudly. 2021 was going to be one for the books.

This got long again oops, so under a cut to avoid eating/lagging ppl’s dashes bc of the gifs. No specific trigger warnings tho, so continue without a worry, this is just because it got kinda long :P
B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind
I have a couple, actually!
1) Lana/Koth (and by extension Saarai/Lana/Koth) - this one actually started as a silly animatic idea to the song “Sorry I Stole Your Girlfriend” by Stereo Skyline (which, yes, is also where their ship name comes from ;) XD) which I shared with one of my friends on Discord (who afaik doesn’t have a tumblr, but they’re gr8 and I love them very much owo), and then in a cider-tipsy 3am revelation my brain gremlins took control and put to me the idea of “But what if they ALL kissed?” basically. Fren encouraged me to do it bc they thought it sounded cute af, and around that time I also started vibing with Bagel over Discord, who further jumped on the “polyam triad gremlin train” and that was that. So y’all can blame my anonymous amazing Discord friend and @darth-bagel for encouraging me to make the OT3 a thing even tho there was pretty much NO content of the sort (I think there’s one other Lana/Koth fic on AO3??) So this is literally a case of:
Tumblr media
They’re very cute, I love them SO much they are literally my new favourite ship to write. I would die for all three of them 🥺🥺🥺 & the haters can die mad about it lmao
2) Sith Inquisitor(F! mostly for me but ya know, I think M!Inquisitor could work just as well :’3)/Andronikos: at first I was very reticent to try this one, bc I started out with a M!Inq and I was worried Andronikos would be like Doc 2.0, but I saw a lot of nice fanfics for them and decided to try it out with Ni’kasi and that’s it. I love them now. I would die for them just as much as the OT3 XD
3) F!Jedi Consular/F!Sith Warrior: Again, because there is just a stunning lack of this content on AO3, see the gif in #1 😂  This is 100% Ariano’s fault, they’ve wormed their way into my angstyfluff brainrot. This pairing has so much potential guys. THE DRAMA. THE ✨A N G S T✨ I cannot talk about it enough 🥺
Honourable mentions for: Jaesa/Vette and Ashara/Jaesa which are rlly darn cute, and also bc it was the first longfic I ever read, and idk the author’s tumblr or if they’re even active anymore, but I need to go back and re-read the fic one day: F!Jedi Knight/F!Sith Warrior and Jaesa/Vette/Kira because the way they wrote them in that fic was so good I cri ;A;
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice)
1) Repeatable 👏 Companion 👏 and 👏 romance 👏 cutscenes!!! BIOWARE. GIVE ME. NOW. I don’t care if it’s the same 3 - 4 animations/cutscenes that can be replayed at my leisure/whenever I want, I WANT IT. ghsyugyudfd
2) More vanilla companion and romance content in general. A lot of my toons have romanced either Koth or Lana so we get a fair bit in KOTFEET but after that even they haven’t had much. Poor Vano hasn’t had a decent convo with Vette, who she considers like a sister, since her re-recruitment in KOTFE. GIVE ME CONTENT, DEVS, I MISS THEM *stamps my tiny feet* Also, leading in from this: more “neutral”/non-romance dialogue options without having to be a dick to ppl, please?!?! Just bc I don’t wanna smash doesn’t mean I wanna be mean (to everyone. Some of them deserve it, but most of them, I would actually like to be friends with, pwease?! XD)
3) More varied companions!! There’s a whole goddamn galaxy of REALLY COOL interesting species, why are like 90% of our perma-companions all human Bioware?! I know you can do better than that. Gimme more Purebloods, Nautolans, Mirialans, hell, every species tbh. I just think they’re neat ok.
Tumblr media
Honourable mentions: POLYAM RELATIONSHIPS IN CANON: LET ME KISS THEM BOTH BIOWARE, YOU COWARDS! ✨ Vaylin “redemption” arc ✨ (and by that I don’t necessarily mean that she has to join the Alliance but at least a tiny sort of rapport with an Outlander who is willing to try enough to plant the thought in her head that they hate Valkorion as much as she does, who can help Vaylin get away from all the conditioning and let her disappear off to Voss or wherever she needs to go to heal herself from all that trauma bc Vaylin deserved better goddammit!), more “repeatable” content in KOTFEET style, I know it’s probably reaching/impossible but I really want the option to rerun the class stories without having to make another clone ok. I’m gonna run outta those slots eventually bioware P L S 🥺 , options to “recruit” long-running NPCs from the other expacs that we never see again e.g. Cytharat and others I can’t think of rn but like...lemme?? pls, bioware 🥺🥺, aaanddd finally, more female companions that aren’t your padawan/apprentice/significantly at a power loss in comparison to you??? it’s super creepy c’mon ughh.

Series Summary: It’s Halloween! Bastien and Rinda are settling into their relationship, and Queen Riley enlists Rinda’s help to plan a Halloween Festival at her duchy.
Chapter Summary: Rinda is a crazy train hot mess as she helps plan the Halloween Festival. Hey, she’s Rinda!
Tumblr media
Part Three: I Am Wonder Woman (Series 14, Part 3 of 15)
“Where in the Great Pumpkin did I leave my brains this time????”
It was Rinda’s notebook where she had checklists and her scribbles when an idea or another to-do item popped into her head. Everything was in that notebook, and she couldn’t find it. Again.
Henry sighed and retraced his mom’s steps for her, and he found it on a hay bale that was several yards away. In the beginning of the afternoon he teased his mom, telling her that she was the last one to use it, so she should know. Or he’d try to talk her though her last steps, just like Bonk did for him, to help her remember. But it was a long day and there was still a lot to do. It was in everyone’s best interest for him, Phillip, and Alex to keep track of the notebook for her and run the various errands she needed during set up.
But the boys didn’t mind. They had bragging rights that they got to help with the festival, AND King Liam and Queen Riley said they could spend the night at the duchy after the festival.
Now Rinda was mumbling to herself, asking and answering her own questions, looking around and pointing to things to reassure herself that yes, they were finished. Everyone who knew Rinda knew this was normal, and the staff at the duchy quickly learned that Rinda was quirky—and good natured. She was the first to laugh at herself, and really, she didn’t mind if they laughed with her. And they weren’t expected to respond to her Rinda Rambles—unless she lost her brains. Then she needed all the help she could get until someone found that notebook for her—again.
The planning had actually started weeks ago. The staff and event planners at the duchy had strict orders to listen to Rinda and follow her every order, no matter what. At first everything went well. The staff knew that everyone on the security team was an amazing teacher and they were excited to work together to make the night a success for all of the families. However, they didn’t realize that Rinda was a spitballer who would come up with the craziest ideas that she would work through. Sometimes the ideas were so crazy that she realized it right away. Other times, she needed other people to bring her back to reality. The security team was used to it, and they knew they could always call Rinda out on her crazy-ass shit. However, the staff didn’t have permission to do this. When Rinda realized the stress she was putting on them she felt horrible and quickly went to Gladys to apologize and figure out a way for staff to feel comfortable giving her the constructive feedback she needed so they could work as a team.
The compromise was that any staff member could politely, and professionally, tell Rinda that an idea “sounded similar to what Duchess Carmine did years ago.” Then Rinda knew she was being crazy train and unreasonable, and she would thank the staff member for telling her and say “we can’t do that, then. Everything must be different now that Queen Riley is here.” The poor staff, dealing with Rinda the clueless Wisconsin girl. She didn’t realize it was unreasonable to ask if a large field of corn could be planted in spring so they could do a haunted corn maze the following fall.
At first the staff was receptive. A small patch of corn in a garden? Yes. Of course.
Rinda looked at them in confusion. No. A corn maze. You know. It takes at least 3 acres and miles of trail, so it can take 45 minutes to get through them. And you have to plot the maze out ahead of time and cut the paths as the corn grows.
The staff looked at each other for a few minutes, unsure of what to say. But Rinda saw their polite reaction and helped them. “Did Duchess Carmine already try that?”
Gladys snickered. “Rinda, I don’t think even Duchess Carmine tried something that large scale.” Fortunately, there WAS a hedge maze that was already full grown. Perhaps that could become a haunted maze? And after a few minutes of laughing at herself for being such a Wisconsinite, Rinda profusely apologized and agreed that yes, that would be more than perfect. In fact, “it would be quite posh.” Then Rinda winked at Gladys to thank her for stopping the crazy train.
Gladys and her staff finally got comfortable enough with Rinda to bluntly say the word “dove” or the phrase “that’s not phoenix.” They were telling her no, without actually saying it, and Rinda loved it. Now they were working like a team.
Rinda also talked with Gladys to get her perspective on whether or not to use apples at the festival. Carmel apples, cider, and bobbing for apples were popular traditions, and it would be perfect to use Cordonian apples. However, since the orchards were burned Rinda didn’t want to use the scarce apples that could be sold for profit or used to feed local families. They decided to skip bobbing for apples and they’d have hot chocolate instead of cider. Caramel apples would be available, but donations would be accepted to help the farmers whose livelihood was impacted by the fire.
And while they were at it, they decided to cut corners on some of the decorating and activities, and instead put the money toward a free dinner for the families. Other staff members weighed in, giving suggestions to trim the budget, and they found volunteers who would donate food, help prepare it, and serve it. Bastien and Mara were able to handle the security concerns, and Rinda gave everyone a group hug. It really would be the perfect evening, and everyone was in agreement that Duchess Carmine had NOT done this before.
. . . . .
The night before the festival the security team and their partners stayed until the bitter end, and finally everything was ready. There were two haunted house sections in the duchy—one for younger children who were accompanied by an adult, and a scarier version for the older children. The haunted maze was for the older children. Some of the local high school students agreed to dress up and be actors in the maze and haunted house, and they would lurk in the corners and wait for the children who met up with . . . a dead end. For younger children there was a well-lit spooky path.
The menagerie was a petting zoo--well, at least with the animals that seemed kid-friendly. Rinda learned that Maxwell Beaumont had several peacocks, and she asked if the peacocks could visit for the evening. Maxwell was so excited that families could enjoy his beautiful peacocks, and Rinda didn’t have the heart to tell him why she really wanted the peacocks there. They made the creepiest noises that were perfect for a scary Halloween evening, and she knew from her visits at the Milwaukee County Zoo that they were fine to roam around the grounds (although Maxwell promised to corral them if they became a nuisance).
Outside they had separate stations for carving pumpkins and painting pumpkins. Leaf piles. Hay rides, and Queen Riley’s horse Marabelle’s Dream was helping to pull the wagon. A graveyard area with large tombstones for children to play ghosts in the graveyard or hide and seek. Throughout the festival area there were several stops where children could yell “trick or treat!” to get candy. And Drake insisted that they have a fire pit where children could roast marshmallows and make s’mores.
Everyone flumped on the ground, too tired to move. But they had to. Tomorrow was a long day. A fun day, but a long day.
Bastien needed to stay at the duchy and finalize some security details, but he would see Rinda after school the next day. Before Rinda left, Bastien gave her a well-deserved head and neck massage, and when the tension finally left her body, Bastien held her as she fell asleep. He felt the rise and fall of her chest, the warmth of her body as she snuggled against him, the softness of her curls as he kissed her head. He had gotten used to sleeping next to her, wrapping his arms around her as he fell asleep, and Bastien knew he wouldn’t sleep as well without his Tria. So he held her just a little bit longer before waking her up. When they said their goodbyes, Henry hugged his Bonk just a little bit tighter as Bastien whispered that he loved his Knuddelbär and couldn’t wait for tomorrow when they’d see each other again. Rinda gave Bastien a small smile as she stood on tiptoes to hug him goodnight, and when he lifted her up she wrapped her legs around him and hugged him close. “I love you, Tiger. So, so much.”
“I love you too, Tria. So, so much.”
When he set her down, Rinda playfully booped Bastien’s nose. “Now go get ‘em, Tiger!”

SPIRIT WORK FOR MABON
Tumblr media
Mabon, also called the Autumn Equinox, is often referred to as the pagan Thanksgiving. The crops are being harvested in full force and stored away for the winter months. Celebrations and feasts abound, along with corn mazes, apple picking, and bonfires! I am so ready for cool evenings, warm apple cider, and pumpkin carving. I already have fall decor up and fall candles burning around the clock. Yum! Like every sabbat, Mabon is no different in that there is spirit work to be done! My personal favourite is apple divination, but there are a couple other activities you and yours will enjoy doing this holiday!
1. Practice apple divination.
I love apple divination, probably because I love apples. Going out and picking fresh apples from an orchard is one of the best fall activities, hands down. If you've never done it, I strongly encourage you to find a local orchard and take the whole family. When you come back with your apples, there are several different divination activities you can do before you cook them up into a
Dutch Apple Pie
One of the most famous forms of apple divination uses the peel. Peel the apple in one long piece. When the peel comes off, drop it on the floor or throw it over your shoulder. The letter it forms is the first initial of your true love! If you break the peel before it is completely removed from the apple, you have to start over. Sometimes this is seen as an omen of death prior to meeting your true love. This form of divination is famously portrayed in
Alias Grace
by Margret Atwood. I adored this book as a teen. The pagan imagery in the book is fascinating. In fact, in tenth grade, I wrote a paper discussing the use of pagan imagery in the book. But I digress.
Another form of apple divination involves cutting the apple into nine pieces at midnight. Once cut, place the pieces in a dark room with a mirror. Begin eating the pieces of the apple while looking into the mirror. When you get to the ninth piece throw it over your shoulder and the face of your lover will appear in the mirror.
And finally, if you have multiple lovers, place an apple seed on your cheek for each person. The last one to remain stuck to your face represents the suitor who is your true love. A lot of future lover magic here! You can read more about the properties of apples
.2. Thank your household spirits by putting out an offering.
At Imbolc I suggested you introduce yourself to your house spirits and get to know them. Hopefully, you've been attempting to work with them or have at least acknowledged them since your initial meeting. Either way, the spirits of your home keep you and yours safe all while ensuring that you never run out of food. Mabon is a time for giving thanks, and its a great time to thank the spirits of your home for all that they do. If you throw a Mabon Thanksgiving feast, be sure to set out a plate on your stove or hearth for your house spirits to enjoy. You can also offer them milk, honey, beer, ale, wine, apples, nuts, bread, or other traditional fruits and vegetables of the season. Leave the offering out as long as you can; overnight is best. In the morning, bury the offering in your yard. While the food likely looks untouched, unless your cats decided it belonged to them to like mine are often apt to do, the house spirits have absorbed and fed off the energy of the offering, leaving it energetically depleted. It's good to thank your house spirits often, but you certainly should on Mabon.
3. Create a Thankful Tree.
I know this doesn't seem like spirit work on the surface, but it most certainly is. When we express gratitude, we let the Universe and the spirits around us know we are thankful for all they have done, whether we know they have helped or not. It also changes your brain chemistry. Several studies have shown that people who express gratitude often are generally happier and more satisfied with their lives. Happy, satisfied people make better witches. It will change your entire magical practice and help you become more intuned with the world around you. When you feel good, you are often more open to receiving messages so start being grateful!
To create a Thankful Tree, find a fallen branch to turn into a "tree" in your home. Be sure to thank the tree for gifting you with the branch. This is a thankful tree after all. You can't go around stealing branches without thanking the plant it came from. That's a good way for this to backfire! Place some floral foam into the bottom of a decorative pot and place the branch into the foam. Cover the foam with some greenery or craft moss. Now you're ready to start decorating the tree with what you are thankful for. Write what you are thankful for on small strips of paper, fallen leaves, or cutouts of leaves. Using a hole punch, punch a hole into each note and thread a piece of yarn through it to create a hook. Hang your paper or leaves on your tree, I've also seen people do this on a wall by creating a paper tree and taping it to a door, wall, or window and slowly adding leaves over several days to fill in the tree with what they are thankful for. Rhythms of Play and HGTV have some great ideas on making your own Thankful Tree. However you set up your tree, it is sure to bring you happiness. Plus, the whole family can get involved, especially those little witchlings!
And there you have it! Three fun ways to do some spirit work this Mabon. How do you work with the spirits this time of year?

How to Feed Your Gut
http://drhyman.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/sauerkraut-e1523566088825.jpg?v=1.1
Five years ago, nobody knew they had a microbiome. Today, we’re obsessed with it. That may be a slight exaggeration, but the health of the community of microbes living in and on our bodies—100 trillion single-cell organisms, outnumbering human cells 10 to 1—has become a top priority. With good reason: Our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, our brain function and of course, our metabolism and weight. They are critical to our long-term health.
Meanwhile, modern living and our bad lifestyle choices have been hard on those little bugs. The standard western diet is impoverished of the things our beneficial gut bacteria require. All the chemicals from processed foods and the environmental toxins we take in only make the situation worse. Our guts become damaged when we eat a processed diet that’s high in sugar and starch, don’t eat enough of the right fiber and prebiotics, or take too many gut-busting drugs (like antibiotics, acid blockers for reflux, anti-inflammatories, hormones, and more). Think of your gut as an inner garden; just as with any garden—when you let the weeds take over, you get into trouble.
We are home to more than 500 different species of microbes. Some of them help us, but others are harmful. Many of us have too few bacteria in our intestines, where they do us the most good. Others have an overgrowth of the bad kind, which causes its own problems. Not enough of the good bacteria, or too much of the bad, can lead to intestinal disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Leaky Gut, and SIBO, but also chronic inflammation, depression, even cancer and heart disease.
So, it’s our job to encourage the good microbes by feeding them the things they need and avoiding the things that damage them. Meanwhile, we have to starve the bad bacteria by avoiding the foods and other forces that allow them to thrive.
Not surprisingly, good bacteria love healthy whole, organic, plant-based foods, ones that are high in fiber and nutrients and contain no artificial ingredients. One of the biggest questions I get when I tell people to eat more fiber is, “What are good sources of fiber?” Below, I’ve put together a partial list of foods filled with fiber and foods to feed your gut.
Fiber-rich foods for your gut:
Apples
Artichokes
Avocados
Bananas
Beans
Berries
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Celery
Coconut (and foods made from it)
Cucumbers
Dandelion greens
Figs
Garlic
Kale
Lentils
Nuts and seeds
Olives and olive oil
Onions
Pumpkin
Spinach
Seeds, especially when sprouted
Strawberries
Good bacteria also benefit from foods that have been fermented or cultured, like these:
Naturally fermented sauerkraut
Pickled vegetables (including organic pickles)
Kimchi (the Korean version of fermented vegetables or fruit)
Kefir (fermented milk—unsweetened only)
Miso
Tamari (the liquid from miso)
Tempeh (fermented tofu cake)
Tofu (which is sometimes fermented)
Naturally fermented soy sauce
Unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
Coconut yogurt (unsweetened)
Even if you’re eating the right things, you may need some outside assistance maintaining plentiful and diverse gut bacteria. That’s what prebiotic and probiotic supplements are for. Prebiotics feed the good microbes, mostly with fiber. Probiotics are the actual bacteria. The best way to determine if probiotics work for you and which ones to choose is to work with a Functional Medicine practitioner. Everyone is different, and for some people, deeper gut healing might be required before you start taking probiotics.
To tend your inner garden, you might need to do some weeding, seeding, and feeding—a process that Functional Medicine doctors follow: First, you weed to get rid of the bad bugs using herbs or medications; then you seed the gut lining with good bugs; and then you feed the good bugs with prebiotic foods and fibers to keep everything healthy.
There are many different varieties of probiotics out there. When shopping for a probiotic, you should look for one with at least 25-50 billion living CFUs (colony-forming units), including the most beneficial strains like:
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Bifidobacterium longum
Bifidobacterium breve
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus rhamnosus
Lactobacillus bulgaricus
Foods made from coconut are good for our gut microbes. One such food—taken as a supplement—is medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil derived from coconut oil. This dramatically reduces intestinal inflammation and helps eliminate bad bugs.
Another supplement is glucomannan, a dietary fiber derived from a root. It bulks up the food passing through the digestive tract, thereby aiding people with constipation. It also helps with weight control.
What NOT to feed your microbiome:
You won’t be surprised to know that the foods and other edible substances that damage everything else about our health are also no good for our microbiome. It’s the usual suspects:
Highly processed or packaged foods
Refined grains, especially wheat
Sugars, especially high fructose corn syrup, and artificial sweeteners
Refined oils and fats, especially soybean and corn oil
Antibiotic drugs, except when absolutely necessary
Hormones, including birth control pills
Steroids
Anti-inflammatories, including ibuprofen, Advil, and aspirin
Acid blockers, like those prescribed for acid reflux
Products that damage our guts:
What we put on our bodies also affects our guts. Taking antibiotics can alter our gut health for the worse, and so can using antibiotic-based products. Avoid the following:
Antibiotic soap
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers, like Purell
Even dishwasher use is thought to be bad for our microbiome, because it kills germs too well
Stress, Sleep, Exercise and Your Gut:
Lack of sleep and chronic stress also contribute to gut imbalance. In fact, your gut flora listens to and becomes influenced by your thoughts and feelings. So be sure to get 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep and remember to practice your favorite stress reduction activities daily. This can be deep belly breathing, meditation, therapy, or yoga. Whatever you like to do to relax.
Recent studies have also pointed to the idea that exercise can have powerful impacts on our gut health. One study showed that exercise alone, without dietary intervention, led to an increase in beneficial butyrate-producing bacteria. Butyrate is a fatty acid, which can prevent cancer, speed up your metabolism, and reduce inflammation.
This means that movement matters. You won’t find me at the gym, but I love to play sports, hike swim, and run on the beach. Find what works for you, and do it daily. Your gut will thank you.
All this attention paid to our gut microbes requires an adjustment in our thinking—we grew up believing that bacteria were bad things that should be killed at any cost. We now know that this is not true, and scientific research today is still learning about the ways these single-cell organisms are necessary to a healthy life. I’m excited to see what we’ll find next.
Wishing you health and happiness, Mark Hyman, MD

How to Feed Your Gut
Today’s post is brought to you by our friends at Born Sweet Zing™ Organic Stevia Sweetener – Zero Calories but all opinions are 100% mine.
When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, I feel like there is a mile long list of things I would love to change. In an ideal world, I would work out more, use my phone less, eat more veggies, meditate … you get the idea. But year after year of swearing this will be the year everything changes, I don’t succeed. Basically, I am just setting myself up for failure. That’s why this year, I am trying something new!
Instead of making a hundred resolutions, I am going to commit to making some small changes to my routine that will help set me up for success. For me, that means starting first thing in the morning.
I don’t know about you, but my morning sets the tone for the rest for my day. If I start out my day out on the right foot, then my whole day goes more smoothly. A breakfast made with real ingredients leads to healthier choices all day. A few minutes of tech-free time to focus on gratitude change the way I approach challenges. Working out gives me more energy and always makes me feel more productive.
So this year I am getting out of my morning rut (i.e. hitting snooze at least 3 times and spending my first waking moments scrolling through social media), and jumping into something new. A fresh, energizing morning routine packed with nutritious food, happy brain space, some movement, and an earlier wake up time. Don’t worry, not too much earlier.
1. Waking Up 30 Minutes Earlier:
With two children under two, I rarely get a moment to myself. Reflecting on the past few months, I came to realize that whenever I would randomly get up before them, we would all have a more relaxed, peaceful day. So now it’s time to start doing that on purpose.
My ridiculous, effective strategy: Putting my phone across the room so that I have to get up and physically walk across the room to turn it off. Not only will this guarantee I get up, it will also ensure I don’t spend hours in bed scrolling through social media before getting some zzzz’s.
2. Start the Day with Apple Cider Vinegar:
I have been reading about the benefits of apple cider vinegar for years, and am finally jumping on the bandwagon. Not only is it supposed to lead to better digestion, more energy and more luminous skin, I’ve also heard it may lower blood sugar. I plan on mixing 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of water, 1/4 cup of natural fruit juice, and a packet of Born Sweet Zing™ Organic Stevia Sweetener – Zero Calories to cut the vinegar flavor.
Since I am trying to incorporate more real foods in the morning, Born Sweet Zing™ Organic Stevia is the perfect option. It’s a product I feel good about since it is a plant based sweetener with zero calories and no bitter aftertaste. It adds a delicious sweetness to virtually any recipe without the calories. I use it in this apple cider vinegar drink, my morning coffee, smoothies, oatmeal and even savory recipes.
3. Energize my mind OR body:
As much as I would love to find time to exercise every morning and take time to meditate or reflect, it’s just not going to happen. Instead of setting myself up to fail, this year I am going to use my extra thirty minutes in the morning to either energize my body or mind.
For my body that could mean a quick walk outside, a fitness video, or some time on the treadmill. When it comes to energizing my mind, there are three main things I will do: meditate (I use Headspace), reflect and plan (personal goals or business goals), or reading (usually focused on inspiration in business or my personal life).
4. Easy Breakfast On The Go:
One of my biggest goals this year is to make a healthier breakfast made with real ingredients a priority. Lately, I have been in the bad habit of pushing through the morning on nothing but coffee and a few handfuls of cereal. This inevitably leads to a late morning caffeine crash. Not this year.
In order to make this happen, I need to plan in advance and have some options ready to go in the fridge. That’s where these overnight oat smoothies come in! They are prepped in advance with whole grain oats, yogurt, almond milk, chia seeds, flax seeds, my favorite Born Sweet Zing™ Organic Stevia Sweetener for sweetness, fruit and even some veggies.
The amazing thing about these overnight oat smoothies is that when morning rolls around, you have the option to either eat them as overnight oats or toss them in a blender for an on-the-go smoothie that will actually keep you full all morning long, thanks to the oats and yogurt. Personally, I almost always go with the smoothie option, since it’s a portable meal I can drink on the go.
Below you will find the base recipe for these tasty Overnight Oat Smoothies! Once you make the base, add any of these delicious flavor combinations or create your own!
Carrot Cake Overnight Oat Smoothie
Add ½ cup grated carrots, ½ cup pineapple, ½ tsp. cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg
Strawberry Cheesecake Overnight Oat Smoothie
Add ¾ cup strawberries, 1 tbsp cream cheese, extra Born Sweet Zing™ to taste depending on the sweetness of your fruit
Apple Pie Overnight Oat Smoothie
Add ¾ cup cooked apples (or raw), 1 tbsp almond butter, ½ tsp. cinnamon
Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Overnight Oat Smoothie
Add 1 chopped banana, 1 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tbsp. peanut butter. Optional: add 1 cup spinach
5. Coffee:
Now in my world, no morning routine would be complete without coffee. This year, to enhance this part of my daily ritual, I am planning on doing two things: First, I am going to add collagen to my morning coffee routine to boost digestion, add some extra protein, and give a boost to my hair and nails. Secondly, I am going use Born Sweet Zing™ Organic Stevia Sweetener to sweeten my coffee without adding calories. Delicious tasting, added protein, no guilt. Win-win.
What does your morning routine look like?
One final routine tip: Since I almost always have at least one coffee or tea on the road during the day, I am planning on keeping some Born Sweet Zing™ single serve packets in my purse. Not only can I use them to sweeten up my coffee, I can see them saving me in lots of situations where I don’t have a lot of guilt-free sweetener options.
