[011] kogami/makishima It really is a strange thing, Shogo reflects idly to himself, staring up at the cracked plaster ceiling overhead. That despite all reason that suggests otherwise, people have come to rely so heavily upon others.
The flat is nearly silent.
Only the constant but quiet hum of the space heater filled the space, Shinya’s soft breathing nearly lost beneath the low sounds. It was both parts eery and yet somehow cathartic, Shogo muses as he turned his head slightly on the pillow to gaze instead out the window closest to the bed. He had only ever experienced the constant bustle of city life at all hours of the day and night. This new silence was strange. Not unwelcome, but strange. He wants to get up. Wander around the flat, maybe prepare a mug of tea or begin a new book. He had never been the type to sleep the whole night, attributing his overactive mind to his chronic insomnia. “How long have you been awake?” Shogo starts, snapped out of his reverie by the sudden break in the silence. He looks over to Shinya, seeing the dim light in the room being reflected back at him. Short black hair is mussed and tangled, the slight croak to his voice belies the alert appearance the ex-Enforcer is trying to wear. “Not long.” Shogo lies, letting his eyes slide shut briefly before rolling onto his side. Shinya has a knowing look, intelligence shining clearly in those dark irises. Shogo feels a vague curl of amusement flicker across his chest as he sees the disbelief flicker across the other’s face. He had learned long ago that there were no secrets from Shinya— that there were no secrets at all between the two of them. Not when reading the the other was as simplistic as reading yourself. “Hm.” Shinya makes a noncommittal noise. He tilts his head to the side, eyes roving over Shogo’s face for a real answer. He doesn’t say anything else, just waits. There are red crease marks on his cheeks from the pillow cover, Shogo notes tiredly, and the tell tale bleary, half-awake look is still in his half lidded eyes. It’s really all terribly endearing and for a brief second Shogo nearly forgets himself. It’s becoming more difficult not to. “In another life I could’ve fallen in love with you.” Because Shinya looks at him, really looks, and every time he does Shogo feels as though he’s suffocating. That the broken, shredded pieces of who he was and of who he is now are being ripped out and surrendered to the other man. Shogo looks away. “But in this one I won’t.” “Makishima.” Ah, and there it is. Shogo’s breath catches and he feels the brittle walls he’s built around himself crumble in an instant. It’s foolish really, completely ridiculous. The life he’s lived and the things he’s done; none of it means anything anymore. Not here, thousands of miles away from the only place he’s ever known. Not here where there isn’t a single familiar face in sight to remind him of his past or of his crimes. Not here when Shinya is at every turn and corner, his dark eyes taking apart every expression to Shogo’s face and every tremor in his hands. It’s laughable. Shogo sighs, and the sound is more shaky than he wanted it to be. His eyes slide shut again and he doesn’t bother trying to keep them open. He’s tired. It’s been too much these past years for him too handle and comprehend and he feel like he’s just breaking apart at the seams. He’s not the same person he was, but he doesn’t know how to be anybody different. There’s a soft touch on his cheek then, steady and careful. It trails slowly over the pale skin there and sweeps down under his jaw. It’s sure and warm and somehow so comforting and not fair in the slightest sense- “Shogo.” He sounds more insistent this time. A slight edge has crept into his voice and Makishima feels the relief in his bones at that. He knows how to respond to situations where the other person is less than pleased, but when they’re lying in bed just a few feet from you with a touch on your face that could be called tender if it were anybody else… Shogo lets his eyes open under the direction. Gray eyes are staring back at him intently, roving over his face and taking in every crack, every tell, every secret that Shogo tries to keep from him. It’s too too much and Shogo bites back the childish urge to close his eyes and roll over to go to sleep. But that would only make Shinya angry, he knew that much. And despite everything they’d done and been through, he couldn’t help the feeling of dismay whenever Shinya was sore with him. He was already so far gone. “What?” He murmurs, finally. His allows his eyes to rove over the look that could’ve been caring, worried even. He fights to keep his face neutral even though every instinct he has is screaming at him to stop trying so hard already. So he keeps an edge to his voice and a steel glint in his eyes and hopes that it’s enough.
It’s not.
Shinya suddenly moves, reaching out to touch at Shogo’s cheek. His hands are always so warm, roughed from years of abuse and remarkably gentle considering the history between the two of them. He doesn’t respond or rise to the bait Shogo’s laid out for him, most likely well aware of the trap that yawns in front of him.
It wasn’t an easy thing to trick Shinya. It wasn’t an easy thing to trick somebody who lived by the very same sets of traps that you yourself had grown comfortable with.
So they lie there in a charged sort of silence, the rattle of the rust-flaked heater acting as the only buffer between them.
Shogo could hear his breathing grow ragged under the intense gaze and for a moment he hated that Shinya could do this to him. That Shinya and Shinya alone had this absolute, total control over him and didn’t seem to realize or even care just what kind of power he held.
Or maybe he did. People weren’t to be trusted. Not when their hearts were able to change so suddenly, so completely. Not when they were able to destroy all pieces of something beautiful for a twisted, greedy sense of self driven pride.
There was something strangely fascinating in that, like the bizarre kind of beauty a Venus flytrap possessed when moving in on potential pray; but the game didn’t prove itself as much fun when you yourself were a player in the game.
“Stop thinking so much.” Shinya murmured suddenly, shaking Shogo from his musings. Those eyes were still fixed on him, a sad kind of understanding reflected at him. “It’s late.”
“I’m not tired.”
Shinya exhaled slowly at that, swiping his thumb over the high part of Shogo’s cheekbone. “Don’t lie to me.” There was a sort of tiredness in his tone, they’ve exhausted this subject even if they’ve never spoken about it. It was in those silently disappointed glances and reluctant pulling away. Lying was a shield, even if it did no good when raised against Shinya.
Shogo turns his face away from Shinya, trying to escape that gaze. It was bitingly cold outside but Shogo would far rather be out there and away from the other man. He didn’t respond, only made a move to try and put distance between the two of them the best he could in a single bed.
Shinya’s arm shot out almost immediately and pulled him back to pin him once again under those grey eyes. Shogo made a move to shove him away only to have exhaustion prove a hindrance to his agility, allowing Shinya to easily catch Shogo’s hand in his grip.
Another standstill.
“Don’t lie to me.” Shinya repeated, although this time it seemed more like a plea than a command. He slowly began the thread their fingers together, palms sliding against each other like the pieces of a puzzle clicking into place.
Shogo swallowed around the tightness in his throat, feeling his face grow hot under the scrutiny. This wasn’t how things were supposed to go. Fairy tales didn’t exist and this world had never been kind enough to grace him with genuine happiness. He’d long ago accepted who— what— he was… this wasn’t fair. For Shinya to dangle acceptance and understanding in front of him like a prize he could somehow obtain.
It wasn’t a safe thing to let hope in.
When Shinya pressed his lips to Shogo’s knuckles, brushing against the skin feather soft, he almost could almost feel himself falling apart.
“Don’t do that.” He heard himself say. Heard the sharpness in his tone. He wanted this, he wanted it more than anything. But lies were pain wrapped in pretty wrapping and shiny ribbons. They were unboxed quickly and left only disappointment in their wake.
“Why not?”
Because you don’t really mean this. Because you’ll leave eventually. Because the minute those people you left behind call your name to welcome you back you’ll forget about me in a single instant.
He didn’t answer.
Shinya released his hand to instead slide it up under Shogo’s jaw. Fingers tanged themselves in silvery hair and Shinya’s thumb came to rest just under Shogo’s lower lip. Those eyes never left his. “I know why you lie.” He said softly.
Shogo remained silent. He felt his heart rate pick up in his chest, skin burning under Shinya’s touch. Ridiculous. Ridiculous he was so helpless to this all. That it was so easily to pretend reality and fantasy were one and the same.
“You’re afraid.”
Shogo opened his mouth to speak but Shinya tapped at his lip to softly shush him. “You don’t need to be.”
Don’t fall for it, everyone lies. Remember that. Remember that.
Shogo watched him draw closer, stopped watching as he let his eyes slide shut, listened to the words being whispered against his lips before having them sealed into place in a promise softer than spring rain.
“I couldn’t possibly replace you after all.”
But sometimes they told the truth.

Three Steps From Home - Novel Update #2
Hey everyone! Today, I’m going to do my second update on Three Steps From Home. This should be the last update with more than 1-2 chapters, after this I’ll be pretty much caught up to what I’m writing now. This update will cover chapters 5-8, and together, these chapters add up to 4361 words. Warning, this is going to be long because I like these chapters, sorry lol.
Disclaimer: These are all my original thoughts and words, please do not steal them.
Trigger warning: Mental illness, mentions of suicide and self harm, homophobia, conversion therapy
chapter five - rest stop monsters - 1571 words
theme song - the village - warbel
This chapter is maybe the most chaotic in the book. We get the first taste of Jude being a bit unhinged and unreliable as a narrator.
summary: Jude’s mother threatens to send him to conversion therapy, which causes a massive fight between the two. Jude packs a backpack and hits the road, making it a few miles on foot before he breaks down and calls Aaron from a rest stop.
Excerpts:
Jude’s mother trying to send him to conversion therapy:
Mother clicked the TV off so hard, the rubber button got stuck in the plastic base. Her knuckles crackled as she shifted, turning the hard, unblinking stare of concentration usually reserved for priests on me. The reverence she used when looking at someone who spun God’s words like steel ribbons was gone, replaced by the look of someone who has found a dead thing in their house
“Father John and I have been talking,” she said, choosing her words carefully. Nothing good ever started with that phrase. “We’ve been talking, and we think you’re beyond our help. Beyond… normal help.”
No shit. I had been ‘beyond help’ since I was a kid, it was a miracle it had taken her so long to come to the same conclusion I had. “Okay… so what now?”
I knew the answer before I formed the words, but I wanted to hear her say it anyway. I wanted it to sting, I wanted a reason to blow up in her face. She fed my fire, she would watch as it burned me.
Jude having a breakdown at a rest stop:
Tumblr media
I brought my knees in closer to myself and shivered, my chest collapsed in on itself and my lungs emptied. The rest stop monsters closed in; I didn’t look at them. The minutes I spent waiting for you felt like hours.
By the time you pulled into the parking lot in your used blue pickup, I was half asleep, the start of a nasty cold already coursing through my blood. You parked next to me and got out, silhouetted against your headlights so you looked like someone else.
chapter six - Duo of Trespassers - 1266 words
theme song - mars - YUNGBLUD
Chapter five is definitely kind of a downer, but don’t worry, this book likes to play with your emotions so chapter six is weirdly... upbeat? This one is kind of hard to me to describe because the mood is very back and forth. It takes place the morning after chapter five.
Summary: Jude wakes up at Aaron’s apartment, and they are now on a mission to break into Jude’s mother’s house and steal his stuff.
excerpts:
Aaron talking about his past and then changing his mind and saying nothing:
“Good idea. When I moved out, my folks…” you trailed off, but it was enough to make me turn around. You had talked about your family just enough for me to know that you had one, and you probably weren’t adopted, although even that was foggy for me. Whenever I asked about them, you clammed up, changed the subject, complimented my eyes or the new sticker I had put on my laptop. I had stopped asking.
You waved me off like it was no big deal, but something about you had shifted already. You moved like a sparrow, ready to take flight at any second. You had paled a shade, your hands wouldn’t stop moving; adjusting the string at the waist of your shorts, then to your hood, putting it up, back down again, raking your fingers through your hair as if you were trying to pull it out by the chunk.
“It doesn’t matter,” you lied to my raised eyebrows. “Today’s about your bullshit, not mine. Now let’s get moving before we lose our nerve.”
“Aaron…” I should have stopped thinking about myself then, should have told you to go to work while I sorted my shit out, should have grabbed your hands and demanded you tell me something real about your life before I met you, but I didn’t. My tunnel vision didn’t include your distress, it barely included mine.
Jude and Aaron breaking into Jude’s old house:
Tumblr media
My mother’s car was thankfully absent from the driveway when we pulled up. I slouched down in my seat and scoured the street for snoopy neighbors, determining after nearly five minutes that there weren’t any.
You boosted me through the same window I had used to leave the night before, left wide open, as if she had wanted me to return so she could trap me inside. Your fingers were freezing as I pulled you in after me, a duo of trespassers in a room that was still mine.
seven - high on nothing - 1011 words
theme song - peanut butter waffles - ryan caraveo
Summary: This chapter takes place three weeks after the events of the previous chapter. Jude gets a call from his mother for the first time since they fought and he moved out, and agrees to take Aaron to meet her over brunch. Aaron spends the rest of the chapter assuring Jude that he isn’t afraid of Jude’s mother, and he does want to meet her. Essentially, the whole chapter is Jude having an emo moment and Aaron eating his spaghetti and begging Jude not to worry.
Beginning paragraph:
It was three weeks before my mother finally called me. Three weeks of being high with glee when I remembered she wasn’t waiting for me when I got home, ready to tear into me like a bear tears into its prey. Three weeks of feeling like I was looking into the chasm where her anger bubbled just under out of sight, ready to swallow me whole if I got too close to the edge.
Jude speaking with his mother on the phone:
Tumblr media
“Jude?” she finally said, her pronunciation just a little off. My mother didn’t speak the language of apologies, but she stumbled through one that night. Her voice was hard as a brick wall, she was going against her better judgement, some part of her probably regretting it already. I let her talk.
She didn’t ask me to move back in, she didn’t ask me to change, she didn’t even ask me to go to church with her, which must have been a first. Instead, through gritted teeth, she said the words I never expected to hear from her. “Will you at least bring… him around the house? If you’re going to be dating, I deserve to meet him, at the very least.”
More of Jude being afraid of his mother...
I rolled my eyes and tried not to think about what my mother would say when she met you, how she would probably go after how you dressed first, and then the slight crookedness to your nose that I always thought made you more beautiful. Next, it would be: ‘does he even speak Spanish?’ And after that would come the obligatory: ‘I loved a white boy once, and do you know what it got me? An ungrateful son like you and a high mortgage.’  Then, she would pick you apart by the personality trait, by the star sign; tear you up and leave you in a heap on the floor.
Jude explaining to Aaron why he’s afraid to see his mother
“My mother is… well you’ve heard the stories. My mother isn’t nice, she’s kind of a nightmare, actually. She doesn’t have a kind bone in her body, and she hates sinners more than anything. And she’ll probably insult everything about you. She’ll definitely try to shame me into marrying a Guatemalan girl from the next town over and having ten Christian kids and sending them to church school and having a dysfunctional family that looks perfect from the outside and then dying sad and alone.”
chapter eight - black and white - 505 words
theme song - untitled - EDEN (yes I've used this song before, but it’s one of the theme songs of the whole book and also its so pretty lol)
This is the shortest chapter in the book, and it’s definitely way underwritten, so I’ll be coming back to it.
Summary: Aaron takes Jude to a drive in movie the night before their brunch with Jude’s mother to cheer him up. Aaron falls asleep, Jude drives home and reflects on his life.
Jude and Aaron being cute on the way to the movie:
You taught me words of the french you had learned in school as you drove, laughing when my pronunciation sounded more like ‘sad Spanish’. Eventually, I crossed my arms and spent the next ten minutes speaking only my mother tongue, which came back to me faster than I would have imagined after avoiding the language for years.
“Not bad, not bad,” you admitted when I finally got bored and switched back to english. “I mean, it doesn’t beat my secondary school French, but you’re getting there.”
I laughed and rolled my eyes. I had learned Spanish and English at the same time, and until elementary school, I mixed them like they were one. I was smart enough to know the difference as the words rolled off my tongue, but not smart enough to understand that not everyone spoke that way. It took my kindergarten teacher kneeling in front of me on the second day of school and explaining that his classroom was for english only for me to realize that I was different.
Aaron falling asleep at the end: (I had a picture for this one but it got corrupted so RIP)
I’m not sure exactly when you fell asleep, it was somewhere between the last (and only) good jump scare, when you swore like a sailor and then laughed until there were tears in your eyes, and the end of the movie.
Half the cars had already packed up and left before I slid your head onto one of the pillows and pulled a blanket to your chin. You shifted in your sleep, but didn’t wake. I shoved all the blankets into the passenger seat and then shook you just enough so one bleary blue eye opened. You were stretched out in the backseat, asleep before I could say anything.
Okay, there it is! I hope you enjoyed this update, because I had a really good time making it! As always, feel free to message me if you have any questions! Thank you for reading if you made it this far.

Note
All the numbers for Aoi
In-depth headcanons!
Tumblr media
1. Does your character have siblingsor family members in their age group? Which oneare they closest with?
She’s an only child, but Aoi does have a cousin who’s about two years younger than she is. They’re pretty close, tho she hasn’t talked to him in a couple years. Once she gets home again, she plans on calling him.
2. What is/was your character’srelationship with their mother like?
They’re really close, to the point she feels safe telling her just about anything. Her mother fusses and worries over her being at Duel Academy, even if she’s quick to change her tone once she finds out who her friends are. XD Still, her mom knows her and always sends her things in her care package she might need but forgets to mention, or adds a little gift she’d enjoy.
3. What is/was your character’srelationship with their father like?
4. Has your character ever witnessedsomething that fundamentally changed them? If so, does anyone elseknow?
The biggest thing she’s seen is a car crash when she was about five. One person didn’t survive, and she never forgot her mother’s words to her that evening, when she was still crying over how scary the entire scene had been: “Live every day to the fullest, because you never know when it might be your last.” She didn’t notice it then, being just a little kid, but her attitude changed after that and turned her into an even brighter, bubblier person.
5. On an average day, what can be found inyour character’s pockets?
Her PDA, a piece or two of wrapped candy, possibly a ribbon (for her hair… Or to play with Jaden’s XD), a bit of money (especially if headed in the way of the school’s store), and if it counts as a pocket, her deck in her deck case.
6. Does your character have recurringthemes in their dreams?
Not usually. Her dreams can range anywhere from dancing piglets in a broadway play to something incredibly dark and terrifying. She frequently gets a nightmare in her last year at the academy of Jaden being lost to his darkness, but aside from that, her dreams vary quite a bit.
7. Does your character have recurringthemes in their nightmares?
If you consider frequently having the same nightmare of losing Jaden as a theme, then yes - Her nightmares usually include losing someone close to her, though in that senior year it’s usually her closest friend. She’s terrified of losing him.
8. Has your character ever fired a gun? Ifso, what was their first target?
Nope. She’s fashioned one out a rubber band and her fingers though, does that count? XD
9. Is your character’s currentsocioeconomic status different than it was when they were growing up?
Been fairly the same her entire life. She’s middle-class and has stayed there - definitely fine with that, too.
10. Does your character feel morecomfortable with more clothing, or with less clothing?
In between; Aoi likes to follow fashion trends, but she edits them herself for her own sense of fashion, style, and comfort. Aside from her halloween costume (which she didn’t even pick out, Jaden- XD), which showed off more skin that she’s used to, she’s usually covered and presentable for the most part, but it’s not a whole heck or a lot, nor very little. Just… Layered. A lot.
11. In what situation was your characterthe most afraid they’ve ever been?
The car crash when she was five, and during Yubel’s ‘reign of terror’, as she’s calling it. Also during anything having to do with shadow games. She tries not to show it, but her trembling hands and stuttering probably gave her away.
12. In what situation was your characterthe most calm they’ve ever been?
Surprisingly, during her entrance exams for the academy, during tag duels with Jaden, and after everything having to do with Yubel. She wasn’t too worried about her exam, since she could try again the next year, trusts in Jaden and his skills completely to the point she never has to worry about anything with him, and after living (kind of) through Yubel’s terrors, she was at ease and smiling mostly in an attempt to remind Jaden she wasn’t leaving his side. Just… Also managed to convince herself everything was fine, too.
13. Is your character bothered by the sightof blood? If so, in what way?
Slightly, but only in incredible amounts, and only real blood. Blood in games she’s fine with, but excesive amounts of real blood can and will make her queasy.
14. Does your character remember names orfaces easier?
Faces, but she’s really not bad with names at all. Her bubbly, hyperactive nature means she might not catch a name right away, or remember it, but after she’s heard it two or three times it sticks as well as a face does.
15. Is your character preoccupied withmoney or material possession? Why or why not?
Slightly? I wouldn’t say she’s obsessed with them or anything, but I mean… She loves her stuff, and doesn’t know of anyone who doesn’t. Especially as a duelist, she’s gonna fight you for her cards if she has to. And the girl’s got a lip gloss collection a mile wide- it’s not like she’s obsessed with it, but her things show who she is and her life. She’ll put up a fight to lose them, but she also knows the majority of it can be easily replaced anyway.
16. Which does your character idealizemost: happiness or success?
Happiness. Success comes and goes, and it’s fleeting. You can be successful one day and lose it all the next. But happiness… Happiness you can get back if you lose it. If you lose a job, it’s not as easy and blinking to get it back, whereas a smile you can have back anytime you wish. Happiness is the more powerful feeling.
17. What was your character’s favoritetoy as a child?
A small wooden pig on a leash she loved to tug around the house with her. It had little wheels for feet and its head bobbed when it moved - her father made it for her and it got her interested in pigs, thus starting her absolute love of the animal.
18. Is your character more likely to admirewisdom, or ambition in others?
Ambition, though wisdom isn’t far behind, surprisingly. If there’s anything she admires, it’s her best friend’s drive to be the next king of games and protect everyone he loves and holds dear. He’s not the smartest guy in the world, but she can’t help but admire him. On a much smaller level, she slightly admires people like Bastion as well - people who can ace their exams with very little effort - even if her heart follows Jaden’s example and wants to support him.
19. What is your character’s biggestrelationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for thembefore?
She’s not yet had a real (romantic) relationship, but more than likely her affectionate and playful nature. Aoi can get fairly clingy (Laying on her partner, cuddling often, sleeping on them, etc) with the people she loves, and it could easily get overwhelming to most people and prompt them to put distance between them. So far, it’s not ruined anything for her… But to be fair she’s only like this currently with Jaden, who welcomes and returns a lot of it. Doubtful she has to worry about anything with him.
20. In what ways does your charactercompare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake ofself-validation, or self-criticism?
She’s often comparing her dueling skills to others, though even she’s not sure if it’s for self-validation or criticism. She also tends to look at other girls her age (like her roommates, specifically) and wonder if there’s something wrong with her, considering she doesn’t like much of what they do and lack interest in things typically considered ‘girl talk’, even if she enjoys girl talk in general (She enjoys talk of makeup and such, but add in boys and she clocks out, for example). She knows there’s really nothing wrong with her, it’s just an interest conflict, especially when she knows School star Alexis is the same sometimes, but it’s another “I can’t help it” moment and something she keeps buried.
21. If something tragic or negative happensto your character, do they believe they may have caused or deservedit, or are they quick to blame others?
Both, depending on what happened. if it’s something she personally could have stopped, she’s likely to blame herself, and if it’s something incredibly horrible then completely insist on it and break apart. But if she couldn’t help it in the least, and it wasn’t directly involving her, she’ll blame others out of fear/pain/heartache/whathaveyou until they make her stop and think on what she’s saying.
22. What does your character like in otherpeople?
Kindness, compassion, the ability to think on their actions/before they jump, friendliness… She can’t really give a set cirteria when her friends vary from one else of the spectrum to another (Sweet and puppy-like Jaden is her best friend, but so is the prickly, grumpy porcupine Chazz), but as long as they have a good heart and aren’t trying to hurt anyone and seem kind and able to think on their actions, she’s good.
23. What does your character dislike inother people?
Liars, cheaters, manipulators, those who would hurt others for no reason, jerks (Chazz excluded), those who would force things on her (items or ideals, like her roommates constantly trying to insist she should get a date when she’s said no often)…
24. How quick is your character to trustsomeone else?
Unless your name is Jaden, not very. While he broke down her walls and set up a nice little home in her heart rather quickly, everyone else is subject to scrutinty, Chazz included. She’ll hold back and watch, keep them at arm’s length, make sure they’re not going to hurt her, and then slowly get closer to them. If they’re male, then she still keeps them at arm’s length physically.
25. How quick is your character to suspectsomeone else? Does this change if they are close with that person?
Depending on the situation and how well she knows the person, it can vary. If something goes missing and there’s only one person with the item before it vanished, she’s gonna say it’s them, obviously. She might believe rumors she hears and suspect others she’s not close to. But if she’s close to them, she usually knows them fairly well and isn’t so quick to suspect; for instance, if a card goes missing and Jaden was the last to see it, she knows better than to suspect him because it’s not in his nature to steal.
26. How does your character behave aroundchildren?
If the kids are relatively well behaved, or hyper like herself, she’ll be down on the floor and playing with them in a heartbeat. Adventures, games, fun~! But if they’re more bratty type, I-can-do-as-I-please types, she’s gonna huff and… More than likely get snarked at and snark in return. Doesn’t matter if you’re a kid or an adult, she’s gonna treat you the same.
27. How does your character normally dealwith confrontation?
Depending on the level/type of confrontation, she can go from taking with with a frown or an argument, right up to legit snapping and trying to fight back. Usually, though, she’ll just get stubborn and argue.
28. How quick or slow is your character toresort to physical violence in a confrontation?
Not very. If you hit her, or make an advance on her, she’s gonna punch of slap you. If your goal is to worm your way into her head and under her skin, she’s gonna eventually snap on you, doubly so if the goal is to make her feel like Jaden and/or Chazz are being threatened. Otherwise, she’s just gonna argue with you. A lot.
29. What did your character dream of beingor doing as a child? Did that dream come true?
As a child, she wanted to either be a fashion designer, or work at a zoo, specifically with the piggies. XD Pigs are her favorite animal, and she loved the zoo- Always thought working there would be the best job ever! But now that she’s older, she’s.. Not really sure what she wants, and that scares her a bit.
30. What does your character find repulsiveor disgusting?
Crowler Chazz’s coat, for one thing XD It needs washing so bad the smell alone is enough to make her question if his nose works! She’s also disgusted by a lot of bugs, and scorpions, and really, really doesn’t like spiders. Also, really, really old and really out there foods, like a century egg, or foods that involve parts of an animel that seem disgusting, like sheep’s stomachs for haggis. Just no. Anything BUT that-
31. Describe a scenario in which yourcharacter feels most comfortable.
Sitting around in Jaden’s room, talking to him or working on their decks, leaning against one another, per their norm. She feels safe and secure with him, no matter what happens, and only with him is she at her most relaxed and open. She’s also really comfortable hiding in Chazz’s room with him, though she’s not quite as open and won’t touch him as freely.
32. Describe a scenario in which yourcharacter feels most uncomfortable.
Anytime she’s within close contact with guys, and this includes the Slifer red cafeteria. It’s at the point where she has to sit with Jaden, against a wall with him on her other side, and if she can help it, Chazz to her back, since the cafeteria is really just a single semi-small room. Another situation would be during field exams as a whole, especially when she’s either unprepared or facing down a particularly nasty examiner.
33. In the face of criticism, is yourcharacter defensive, self-deprecating, or willing to improve?
At first defensive; she’s quick to argue to the contrary, though with some people *coughJadencough* her argument dies out incredibly quickly. In all cases, she eventually steps back and gives it some thought, and end up more than willing to improve.
34. Is your character more likely to keeptrying a solution/method that didn’t work the first time, orimmediately move on to a different solution/method?
She’ll try it twice, even though she usually remembers ‘lighting only ever strikes once’, and if it fails a second time she’ll jump to plan B. If it’s in the middle of an emergency situation and plan A fails, there’s no second try- she’s going right to plan B.
35. How does your character behave aroundpeople they like?
See: Chazz and Jaden. XD No but really, she’s affectionate, hyper, bubbly, and in Jay’s case, a bit attached to his hip, though he’s thankfully incredibly welcoming of this. She’s a lot like him, actually; if she likes you, she’s gonna be your bouncy and bubbly, easily excitable friend.
36. How does your character behave aroundpeople they dislike?
She gets quiet, snarky and sassy, and generally withdraws into a shell covered in spikes, especially if she’s there alone. If she’s with someone she likes at the same time, the effect is dulled into withdrawing some and going mostly quietly, but with less snark. She doesn’t want them to worry about her or have to wonder why she’s disliking someone.
37. Is your character more concerned withdefending their honor, or protecting their status?
Honor. Status means nothing to her, especially at the academy, when it can change at any given moment - One loss and you can go from Class Ace to Class Flunkie. She’d much rather protect her honor and her friend’s, and keep them smiling rather than fuss about status.
38. Is your character more likely to removea problem/threat, or remove themselves from a problem/threat?
Depends on the problem/threat. If it’s something small and has no bearing on their lives in general, she’s more than likely going to get sassy at most, and then turn and walk away, unless she’s arguing with Chazz, which never ends. But if it’s a more serious problem, like a shadow game or someone wanting to get at her friends/classmates, she’s going to try her best to remove it, instead. A threat she’ll try and remove, too, unless she recognizes she’d fail at that and step back. She’s impulsive, protective, and stubborn as all getout, but she’s not stupid.
39. Has your character ever been bitten byan animal? How were they affected (or unaffected)?
She’s been bitten by a dog before; it was a stray she found when she was a little kid, lost, matted, covered in mud, and clearly malnourished. The only thing she did was cry for a little bit and come back with dog food day after day until the dog came out and trusted her enough to take it home with her a month later. She still has the dog.
40. How does your character treat people inservice jobs?
Kindly, for the most part. Certain teachers get snarked at and a stubborn girl, but Aoi knows it’s not an easy job and she’s not about to make it harder on them. Like Jaden, she’s more likely to step in and help than she is to make fun of them.
41. Does your character feel that theydeserve to have what they want, whether it be material or abstract,or do they feel they must earn it first?
She feels like she has to earn it. Obviously, she feels she deserves things like food and lodging, but she’s also aware these things are provided for her because she’s just a kid at the moment. Otherwise, she feels like she has to earn it- her mother raised her not to take things for granted, and she most definitely doesn’t. If she doesn’t earn it, but gets it anyway, she’ll feel a bit guilty over it.
42. Has your character ever had a parentalfigure who was not related to them?
Professor Banner, the (former) headmaster of the Slifer Red dorm. To be fair, he was fairly fatherly to all the Slifer students, too, so she was no exception, and she loved that. Later on, she feels like the Chancellor, Sheppard, is a father figure, though her interaction with him is rare and that’s totally fine by her.
43. Has your character ever had a dependentfigure who was not related to them?
Unless her dog counts, she’s only babysat for her neighbors a couple of times. Other than that, she’s been responisble for squat.
44. How easy or difficult is it for yourcharacter to say “I love you?” Can they say it without meaningit?
Yet another ‘it depends’ question. It’s easy to say to her parents, but to Jaden, who she really does fall in love with, it’s at first one of the hardest things she can do, because she’s afraid if he doesn’t feel the same, it’ll ruin their friendship and that’s the last thing she wants. Once past the hurdle tho, she can say it all she wants and not have any problem with getting it out. But it is a phrase she can’t say without meaning it- even if she’s saying it to Chazz in the context of their friendship, she wouldn’t say it if she didn’t mean it.
45. What does your character believe will happen to them after theydie? Does this belief scare them?
She’s not sure, but it definitely is scary to think about. She wants to think her spirit’ll stay with Jaden, like he has his kuriboh, but she’s also aware that’s just being silly and impossible. Still, it’s something she tries not to think of and really doesn’t want to find out before she’s old and grey.
