my friend asked me for murder show recs and i put together a list of a bunch of them and thought i'd also share it here in case anyone else who was not raised by the glow of mystery! on pbs might want an intro. extremely subjective commentary, obvs. enjoy.

hello. welcome to the world of finding television shows about people getting killed comforting. it's fucked up, but who isn't. here's a list of the ones i like and why and where to watch them.

midsomer murders (1997-current): this is one of those sterotypical "it ran for 25 years and did nearly 18 episodes" british shows. it was adapted from a book series, which are the early eps. they're really fucked up and great imo. the later ones lose that sharpness, but until seasons 20+ i think it's a really solid show. the theme song is performed on a theremin. pluses: every great british actor shows up at least once, incredibly great deaths, lots of hyper niche hobby groups, tom barnaby is the best. minuses: showrunner brian true-may quoted as saying that his version of "english countryside" is entirely white. he was booted from the show at that point, however. i've watched the entire series 2-3 times, except for s5e3 "Ring Out Your Dead" because there's a death in it that i found particularly tragic the first time i watched it and have no desire to revisit it (but ymmv). robyn's fave ep is s3e3 "Judgement Day," because a brass band plays the show's theme song at a village fete and also Orlando Bloom is run through with a pitchfork. Poirot (1989-2013): truly the goat. David Suchet bodies this role. i don't know how familiar you are with christie, but hercule poirot was her recurring detective character, a fastidious little belgian living in 1930s England. in this show, it's the late 1930s for 20 years, and the sets and costumes are so good. not a single streamline moderne property in england is overlooked. the early episodes are short--40ish minutes each--but they transition to 90 minutes at some point. they adapt all of the poirot books, with the big ones--murder on the orient express and death on the nile--done as higher budget tv movies. marple (2004-2013): another christie adaptation, with 2 actresses playing miss marple in sequence. they also adapted a bunch of non-marple stories to have miss marple in them. set post-WWII, mainly countryside english mysteries. (BRITBOX)

miss fisher's murder mysteries (2012-2015, film in 2020): set in 1920s melbourne, mfmm follows independently wealthy private eye phryne fisher. it's an adaptation of modern novels, so it's less conservative than the christies. phryne's best friend is a suit-wearing lesbian doctor. it's a sharp, smart show, and phryne herself (as well as her relationship with buttoned-up detective jack robinson) is very sexy. it ran three seasons and was followed by a crowd-funded film in 2020, which isn't GOOD, but it is FUN. there's another a spin-off set in the 1960s called miss fisher's modern mysteries, which follows phryne's niece. again--not good, but fun. nothing beats the og series tho. lewis (2006-2015): this is technically a spin-off of the inspector morse series, which started in the 80s, but i've never watched it so you should be fine. this follows very un-academic inspector lewis and his very academic assistant DS hathaway in EXTREMELY academic oxford england. i really dig the pacing of this, as well as how profoundly weird smart people can be. the big downside is the actor who played hathaway is laurence fox, who's a real stinker of a dude. right-wing, racist, etc. so. ymmv. vera (2011-current): vera is a nearly retired, irascible, set in her ways detective in northumberland. she heads her own department, so part of the appeal is definitely trim youngsters dashing to do her bidding with a "yes mum." she drives a huge old land rover, wears a raincoat everywhere, has no patience for class barriers, and in short i love her. in the newer seasons there is also a detective in her squad called Jaq who is a very cute butch. dalgliesh (2021-current): adaptation of pd james novels following detective-poet adam dalgliesh. set in the 1970s, which sets it apart and which i quite enjoy. his character is really sensitive and thoughtful is a way that's unusual for cop shows. (ACORN)

annika (2021-current): i'm gonna dive into some of the weirder ones now. annika is still pretty serious, but the title character has a habit of breaking the 4th wall to loop the audience in on the meta nature of her thoughts--usually relating to a book or story. it's set in glasgow and they investigate marine crime specifically. annika is played by nicola walker, who full disclosure i find VERY attractive. she's norwegian, she's odd, and she's trying her best. she has a teenage daughter who's gay. queens of mystery (2019-current): this one is VERY odd. think british murders meets pushing daisies. there's a narrator, and occasional technicolor flights of fancy. it follows a very serious detective who was raised by her three aunts after her mother was killed. she comes back to work in her home town and has to navigate both sides of her life, plus still wanting to know who killed her mother. production was interrupted by covid, so the main actress changed between seasons, but the new person is also very good. brokenwood mysteries (2014-current): this one is sort of...sillier than the rest? it's a new zealand show set in a small town. it's fairly queer (although not nearly queer enough), and one of the things i love the most about it is it maintains a roster of recurring characters (which i think is only possible because of the small size of the NZ film industry). pretty good maori rep, especially jared, a local who seems to know or be related in some way to everyone in town. i adore him. he's off the show now, and i miss him. mcdonald & dodds (2020-current): set in bath, this is an odd couple partnership of an ambitious young cop lately from london and a shy older cop who has lived in bath all his life and hasn't seen action in a decade. their interactions are funny and lovely, and it's refreshing to see a black woman character allowed to be ambitious. I can picture wind being a pain in the butt to the school staff while gather kids to cause chaos because of getting bored from sitting in a chair for hours listening to the teacher rant about something and him of course not liking being talked down because of his age and so when he is taken detention he gets in a fight with the teacher which he wins of course and so reader is called to deal with him. Wars gets thirsty comments from time to time but he always says their is already someone special to him as he talks about them in his videos at times which causes his fans to get the idea he's dating and so they call them lucky but he calls himself lucky. Twilight gets some of the old people from the farmers market to like him as he seems like those good old fellas and which when they see how he has a hand around reader's waist and seem so cuddly towards reader and so they think reader is his partner and when they notice there not married because of the lack of wedding rings, they ask when wedding is coming closing reader's chance to get away altho this does happen with the other open affectionate and possessive links (I'm talking about courage) they don't get as much praise and help to get their point as across other than sky and sage altho sage gets because he is the first and sky is sky. Reader notices how a lot of her stuff that has her scent goes missing but gives the ides its just them trying to find something familiar in this new world but later on reader fully realizes that they have a bunch of yanderes in their house and they want them but maybe they don't fight back because they aren't as strong as the chain even when they don't have magic altho they do have the high ground when running since this world is still new to them but that's the thing they can run but they can't hide and especially when they realize dink is after them too as running is just going to get more people hurt and hiding won't be good for long as the chain was able to get to them from another world, how is another county going to challenge them too harder pluse things are too personal and deep between reader and the links and we aren't going to get started with fierce.

also bold of you to assume Sage hasn't already gotten them rings!!! if he got the chance reader wouldn't be able to walk with the amount of jewelry he gives them, and that's not the only way he'd mark his territory, but if reader hadn't gotten a ring it would be a full blown arms race for the chain to get them one. Reader would also be very reluctant to push sage away since I reckon they've already been together for about a year before the chain show up, and are in a very good relationship at that!! so it'd be more likely that the chain push themselves away before driving a wedge in-between reader and sage. If the cursed links were there they'd be the worst for this!!! and they'd be pushing readers limits real quick, not that anything reader sees as bad happens but to them it's like their worlds are ending.

AKSNDN Sky is very much one of my favourites as well, he and sage could have my whole heart within an instant if they asked 💖💖

as for going abroad? the chain could get to reader with magic. if they didn't have that it'd be a lot harder to get them, what with passports and airport security on top of border controls so unless they didn't lose all of their magic then they've got as much of a chance as anyone else. But unless the chain did something very concerning as a yandere or got caught at least I think reader could excuse it as stress or a different culture, I mean they're already writing off a lot of sage's attraction due to that. although it's not impossible for them to realise how deep it goes, it might just take a while for them to see how bad it is.

JJK Idea

Since I don't think I'll get any attention in this fandom until I show art, I wanted to share an idea I had a long time ago, at least to have it somewhere.

Since Gege takes a lot of inspiration from natural forces and paradoxes, I thought it would be good to take into account the law of polarity where everything has a counterpart.

In general, the concept is about an energy opposite to the cursed energy (no, not positive energy), and that this is called "anti-energy".

If I were to place it in the context of jujustu kaisen, it's probably an action of nature to regulate power. In other words, a way of balancing the world.

While the negative comes from the stomach, the anti energy would come from the heart. And obviously, it eliminates the cursed energy.

The anti-energy would have its cons and pluses.

Its pluses being that it would prevent any attack that includes a collision of cursed energy against it, including domain expansions. Therefore, it would force shamans to fight hand-to-hand or use their cursed energy to generate physical attacks, such as throwing an object as a projectile, and also directly remove curses.

Its cons are varied and I would like to start with the one that explains a little more about its basic functioning within the world, which is that it can only exist whenever there is an imbalance.

The energy is born from a higher non-human force as do the celestial restrictions. It is only given to a person born every time there is a feeling that there will be an imbalance of power in the world with the objective of balancing it, which means controlling or eradicating the imbalance, so it can be given to someone who is going to dedicate themselves to good like it can not, but there is always a limit of two users within the same period, as an anomaly tho.

The second significant con is that in exchange for having anti energy, the use of cursed energy is suspended (from existence itself) since it is destroyed when created. This means that inverted techniques cannot be used to heal, and that in the future they have to adapt to losing the anti-energy, to learn to use a totally new energy for them; the cursed energy.

And the third con; the user will possibly die fulfilling his role as a balancer, since even if their character is not confrontational, they will have an insistent innate desire to be in the place of imbalance and do the job for which they we're born. However, it may turn out that they does not die, and in that case, as said before, they will lose their anti energy and will be forced to use cursed energy.

Other data:

- Anti energy users can develop a technique, although these will not be exactly like cursed energy ones.

- Anti energy was only seen in yellow colors.

- Users would be very wanted inside the jujutsu society, but they are also and were taken as a bad omen as they were strange ones that were always born close to dates where a catastrophe was going to occur, and were in the places where the biggest battles took place, so in ancient times they were excluded.

- Because there is no way to instruct an anti-energy user, they are studied more than they are educated.

Maybe i'll make a list of ideas for techniques i'm not going to use, but it's undecided.

Well, if you're really considered THAT good at fighting sequences, how would you set up a scene where the fight takes place in a cramped space with objects that are then used in the fight to stall or daze the opponent?

oh good question!

so, when setting up a fight, a thing a lot of people don't understand right off the bat is how an environment can emphasis a fight. how a location is set up can GREATLY change the outcome of any situation and it is our job as storytellers to think about how a person might see a situation and use it to their advantage.

one key point i wanna make tho, is that you should NOT set up an environment around a fight. you need to set up a fight AROUND the environment! key example of doing this wrong is say "oh! this character uses light to enhance their weapon/skill! so obviously to make them stronger you should make the room a stain glass/mirrors!" in what realistic scenario would that ever happen unless they were in a church or fun house of mirrors??? (not to say that wouldn't be an interesting fight, it would just be predictable and not as entertaining) you want the audience to go "woah! i never considered that! that's so cool!" and if you ONLY give the characters their pluses without thought... it can be less fun.

so here is what I would do when setting this scene up: say the character is running from some goons and runs into a shipyard warehouse with shipping boxes full of miscellaneous stuff. they hide behind a box, scared out of their mind as the goons search the warehouse. They either broke or lost their weapon along the way and they don't know what to do so they desperately look around for something that could help. Thats when they notice one of the boxes is full of bags of flour or sand ya know, something that creates dust, and another box is full of either pipes or rebar for a construction site.

there are many ways to use these items in a make shift way to stunn a bunch of people. you could create a cloud cover of flour and use a rebar/pipe to hit the goons one by one on top of their heads, you could toss the rebar on the ground and make the goons fumble and fall, you could look for rope to trip the goons and then pull a random box on them to hold them down, the list goes on.

Jakie Chan is the king of improvised fighting, highly recommend studying his films or watching this video to get a better idea on how to pull something like this off.

coming up with interesting angles to how a character would fight in a situation like this is part of the fun but it also would be cool for you to come up with unique takes on how to use these misc items.

if you want me to explain a very specific fight scene with more detail, I certainly can with more information. but a lot of this has to do with where the character could be, how the character thinks, what they have on or around them, and how you could make this interesting.

if i went back to the analogy of the shipyard warehouse, I could give you another angle entirely: mc using their vantage point of the rafters as leverage in a fight. whatever they find up there they drop down or use it to swing down and pick off the goons one by one.

another option could be they find a motorboat moored and unused but the engine is full of gas. so they rev it up and let it just decimate the warehouse and the goons run and try to dodge out of the way while the mc escapes.

it all depends on how you wanna work it :>

long post about how i'm enjoying pokemon scarlet :D

warning for some spoilers for the game. not story spoilers. just spoilers on some mechanics and moments that could be enjoyable as a surprise!

so a little of my background with the franchise before i go into my thoughts (so you can see how closely my own opinions align with your own, and therefore know how much my opinion on the game does or does not mirror yours).

I grew up with the spinoff games, Stadium & Snap for the N64 were some of the first video games I ever played (and played constantly all the time growing up). And when I was around 7/8/9 I got really into the Pokemon Ranger series (my favorite of the time being Shadows of Almia) and I played Battle Revolution a lot as well (I used to rent it all the time from the library). This is of course, in addition to watching the anime.

I tried other pokemon games, including the main series, but they didn't resonate with me at that phase in my life.

so anyways, when Pokemon Black & White came out, I was suddenly interested in the main series. if i had to guess -- i think it was because people i knew on deviantart at the time were into it lol.

so that came out, i played through it. enjoyed it enough! black & white 2 came out, i played through it and enjoyed it enough.

then X&Y were announced, and it was the first era i was actively watching nintendo directs all the time, and just keeping up w gaming news. so i was stoked! i got it on release day, and played through it very quickly, and tried matsuda method shiny hunting when i was done lol (i never got the shiny tho. i quit after like 600 eggs)

meanwhile in contrast, when sun and moon came out. i was keeping up with things, but idk? i have to assume it was the stage in my life i was in (i was 17 and it was my era of dropping out of every extracurricular activity i was in because i couldn't be fucked to do or care about anything that wasn't drawing). i bought the game, but legit only played the first few hours and stopped playing. it's always been funny to me, because i really loved the way the 3DS era style had been plused up. i liked the new pokemon, i was interested in the story... but it just didn't keep me engaged at that time.

so when sword and shield came out and it was soooo blasted. i didn't know how i'd feel about the game, but still bought it release day. and uh. i loved it? i loved it so much. its the most fun i've ever had with a mainline game.

so now going into scarlet & violet, there's a lot of options on the table for how i'd feel about it lol. i wanna add: i'm not done yet. i've beaten 4 gym leaders, gotten one titan, and my pokemon are level 35-40.

I didn't like the start of the game very much. There was no easy answer for how to handle it, like they needed to give a lot of info out the gate, and it's hard to do that in a way that isn't overwhelming. I like Nemona a lot though, and I like how the legendaries of these games are just with you the whole time (the way legendaries are handled typically is not for me) also i LOVE the customization out the gate (hair & face & stuff) i love how my character looks.

so anyways, felt negative for the opening. and then when i started with my adventure, i was soooo bugged by the camera angle you have in most battles. like i'm a slut for a fixed camera angle. the way the camera moves in past pokemon games did not need to be changed lol. the new free camera just has no optimal view. i feel so far removed from the action, like im watching ants.

when i complained abt this to a friend, he brought up it might have to do with the way terrain works in this game. and like... that could be true? but also i don't think the terrain being the way it is is a good enough mechanic to warrant removing the fixed camera. i wish they figured something out.

so the thing that made me start feeling positive was sort of a funny thing lol. i was feeling bummed abt the things all above, and i was also feeling weird abt the nonlinearity. like it means there cant be as many unique interactions since they dont know where in the game u are. and in sword & shield, i really got attached to the gym leaders (for the first time) and i wasn't feeling that same spark here.

i sorta felt like, lol. well. the nonlinearity is here, i might as well take advantage of it and just go across the whole map to get a pokemon i like early (in this case my goals were to get: zorua & gothita).

so i started on my way, and i was passing through one of the dessert/mountainous terrains and i bumped into that giant klawf (the stony cliff titan). and was trying to avoid him bc i didn't know what was going on and didn't want him to wreck my pokemon. but i accidentally got in a battle with him. and panicked a bit because i thought i sequence broke and wasn't supposed to be there yet or something, only to get him in one hit because i was actually over leveled LMFAO.

stumbling on major events randomly like that are my favorite part of nonlinear sandbox games. and it just gave me this perspective change of like, okay. this isn't sword and shield. it's not meant to be sword and shield! this is it's own game, and i should enjoy it for what it is and not dwell on what it isn't... and i'm having so much fun now lol.

i got an outfit i like, my team is bringing me a lot of joy, i'm gonna ask if my bestie (who happened to get violet) could send me a misdreavus because thats my only fav [who's in the game] that i don't have yet... and its because they're not in my version of the game lol.

other good experiences i've had: u can see my beloved babygirl Gus in both of these. azumarill and the line has never been a fav of mine, but i was charmed by a wild azurill near the start of the game, and decided to catch it. i was talking w my mom while i was playing, and asked if she wanted to name her, and she said "Gus" SOO fast. like even before i finished asking her. thank u mom, i love gus so much.

i ADORE how when tandemaus evolves into maushold, the game doesn't tell u. like, i thought i'd encountered my first glitch (that people love to talk abt so much).. but no its just the cutest mechanic.

A Day at the Beach

-The great Suneater has always kept his inner circle small. Despite being a well respected and admired hero, very few knew him beyond his aloof public persona. Except you, you were an unexpected exception.

-Introducing himself to you was a feat in itself. He first discovered you at the seafood restaurant he frequented; you were so lovely he couldn’t help but take notice. He imagined what it would be like to approach you, as suave and casual as Mirio, and introduce himself. He would charm you with compliments and knowledge of the restaurant (you were a new customer, after all), and once you’d finished your meal, you’d leave him with your number written on a napkin, just like the romance movies.

-Instead, he could only listen to the lively conversation you were having with your friend on the phone and sulk at his missed opportunity. So, imagine his surprise when you were there again the next week. Maybe he was staring too hard this time, but he jumped when you two accidentally made eye contact...in at least what he thought was a coincidental glance. After catching your pretty eyes darting away from him for the third time, he realized you were probably...interested.

-It took two weeks of the eye contact game for him to even work up the courage to wave at you when you walked in. A whole month of mumbled greetings, and finally, he progressed past small talk to having a full conversation with you.

-Your relationship with Tamaki was the epitome of slow-burn, and it simmered warm and sweet between the two of you well after becoming official.

-Despite knowing you for so long, he still got flustered when talking to you and struggled to maintain eye contact, especially when you were smiling.

-The truth is, Tamaki couldn’t help himself. Your beauty made him nervous. He was a total sucker for you, from the sound of your laugh to the sway of your full hips. He knew you had your own insecurities, and while he understood the feeling, it fascinated him that someone could be so attractive and not even realize it...though, maybe it was better that way, otherwise you’d probably fluster him to death.

-For your first trip together, you decided to go to the beach. You were thrilled, of course, but a little apprehensive about wearing a swimsuit in front of Tamaki for the first time. So when you pulled your sundress over your head, you carefully watched his reaction.

-His eyes drifted over the way your body filled out your swimsuit before glancing away, feeling a little awkward at your intense gaze. You were totally hot tho, from what he saw. Too bad he was too shy to say so...but no worries, you got all the answers you needed from his pink tinged ears and that little wobbly smile he does when he’s flustered.

-You asked him to get the sunscreen out of your bag, and he fully expected you to ask him to rub some on your back. He was eager to oblige, reaching into the bag to pull out the bottle of...spray-on sunscreen. His shoulders dropped in disappointment, but he sprayed your back for you, anyway.

-As soon as you were ready, you rushed off toward the water, eager to cool your warm skin. Tamaki watched you with a small smile on his face. You were radiant in the sun, and the way your skin shone and eyes glimmered in the light filled him with adoration. He chest ached watching you play in the water, he was so glad you were already his.

-After goofing around with him for a couple hours (you kept begging him to grow a shark fin and pretend he was a shark as a prank, but he refused every time), you two decided to get something to eat.

-One of the pluses of your relationship is that y’all are always eating good. You don’t have to hold back with Tamaki, he’ll be smacking right there with you! With his appetite, you can’t help but wonder where it all goes. The boy never turns down a meal. He tries to act all shy about accepting food, so you’re better off just giving it to him and he’ll ‘reluctantly’ take it. Come back in 5 minutes and the whole thing will be gone, tho.

-Ugh, and imagine going to the boardwalk with him at night and riding the ferris wheel!

-If you’re scared of heights, he’ll try to make you feel better (and accidentally embarrass himself with how sweet he’s being). “It’s alright, Y/n,” he says in his deep, gentle voice, scooting closer to you, “If, if the view makes you nervous, just look at me.” It took him a second to realize how embarrassing that sounded, and the instant he did, he ducked his head and looked away.

-You grinned at his comforting words and slowly leaned over to hug him, pressing your plump cheek against his in a delicate embrace so the car wouldn’t shake too much. “In that case, I’ll look at you the whole time,” you mumble against the softness of his cheek.

-You feel his arms settle over your plush figure, and the rise of his cheeks into a small smile of his own. “Okay,” is all he whispers back, pulling you against him as he watches the city lights far below the ferris wheel.
