my million dollar next Mass Effect Installment idea:

ME 3 alternative universe/divergence where you play as a recruited Morinth the Ardat Yakshi after the ill fated Shepard romance, who suddenly realizes “…oh. shit. i uh. probably should not have eaten that guy. considering he was supposed to. you know. save all our asses.”

(bonus points cause she absorbed the weird psychic shepard had with them too so now she’s literally like - “you are what you eat”ed a Chosen One trope)

so the game is you escaping and building your own motley crew of vagabonds banding together against BOTH the collectors and the crew of the normandy who are out for your blood

for character customization, let’s play into the lore theory that Asari can appear different to play on each individuals attraction, and you can change your asari appearance at will to resemble different species and have different tendril styles, but your initially selected marking pattern stays the same, and your sort of key identifier

Act 1: without shepard, the war is ongoing but the Collectors seem to be winning - most worlds are in post apacalyptic state, people scrabbling to survive, starts out on Omega as kind of the last refuge of motley crews. In trying to survive, you scrabble together a bit of a motley gang of your own, but the arrival of the normandy has you fleeing Omega with them to try and find somewhere else “safe” to hunker down for a bit.

actions in previous ME saves can affect omega gang strength and attitudes of certain NPCs like Aria T’Loak.

Act 2: the realization of well shit no where is fucking safe I guess. is this.. my fault? …damn. i guess… i guess it’s up to me to fix. So time to start building strength and amassing more companions/allies, re: traditional mass effect.

Key Narrative Decisions: try to patch shit up in the official channels, go for a pardon, talk to actual world leaders, risk the normandy’s vengeance and try to parlay to net bigger better firepower and easier battles? or get creative with limited resources and wilder plans to lean FULLY into the criminal element and lead the gangs of the underworld against the collectors, and establish yourselves as the new leaders of the galaxy?

The groupchat failed to physically prevent me from writing an exploration of ardat-yakshi and asari society and I’m making that everyone else’s problem.

every day i think about the ardat-yakshi and how fucked up it is that asari with this disorder are diagnosed at puberty and then are either hunted down like animals or sent to live in isolation for the rest of their thousand-year lifespans with only the slimmest chance of MAYBE getting to take field trips outside if they're on their very bestest best behavior

like morinth killing people is reportedly a very severe case, so people can survive it if they don't get the extreme scenario serial killer, but there's no mention of any sort of cure or treatment being worked on. the very simple solution of "okay, you can't meld due to a medical condition, but there's plenty of other forms of intimacy with others you can utilize" is never offered. there's not even tests or screening done to find the disorder before it shows itself, which would prevent a lot of tragedy and trauma and also allow for treatment sooner if treatment actually fucking existed. absolutely nothing is done to actually HELP the ardat-yakshi just get rid of them because they challenge the perfect image the matriarchs present to the other species as an ideal society

the matriarchs don't even acknowledge the ardat-yakshi exist because they're embarrassed, that's canon, but y'know i think it's way fucking more embarrassing that they hold themselves up as so ahead of the other species and enlightened or whatever because they live so long but yet they treat asari with a serious disability so utterly horrendously

Liara Ardat Yakshi AU pretty pleas

Thanks for asking! This fic has been a blast so far to write, so here's a snippet and I'll share some info.

"Now this… this was interesting. This Shepard woman was isolated from the rest of the bargoers, most of them having steered clear of two obvious soldiers out for a drink. And considering the argument she’d just shared with the Turian, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising to find her dead in the morning surrounded by booze. It was sad though, this woman burned so brightly even from a distance, and Liara loathed that she’d be the one to extinguish it. But she’d accepted that responsibility long ago, and her needs were too great to ignore. Shepard was perfect, exactly who and what she wanted at this very moment, and something told her it wasn’t going to be difficult to slink into Shepard’s bed."

So the basic idea for this AU is that Liara is an Ardat Yakshi (obviously) and unlike Morinth who uses her sexuality and tortured artist persona to lure people in, Liara uses her supposed naivety that she displays when you first meet her in ME1. Enter Shepard, recently discharged from the alliance military and retired, who comes waltzing into Omega for a good time and a pretty girl. It's the perfect opportunity for Liara to sate her needs.

But, what happens when for some unknown reasons, Shepard survives the meld?

I'm still debating if this is better as a long one shot or a few short chapters, but the concept is so cool. Will almost certainly deal with themes of addiction from Liara and also Shepard, being earthborn and growing up in gang ridden slums. Probably hurt comfort as Liara has found someone that she as an Ardat Yakshi can have an actual romance with and a bit of PTSD from Shepard's front line experience.

Also because I think this makes Ardat Yakshi more interesting, I might add the angle that if they don't kill with their mend they might die. Make it a bit more grey than black and white like with Morinth. Also also Shepard here is a butch lesbian because my brain is massive.
