Watching Through My Collection: Day 10/36
The Bat (1959)
Day 9 / Day 11
Y'know, for a film in a Vincent Price movie set, this sure doesn't have much Vincent Price.
It's more of a Murder She Wrote movie with a Vincent Price special guest. He could be described as the leading man, but this story is about the women and he gets to show up in scenes and be charming as always.
The real stars of the film are the two ladies, Cornelia van Gorder and her assistant Lizzie. Cornelia is a mystery writer vacationing at a mansion that just so happens to be owned by a bank owner that had (unknown to them) embezzled 1 million dollars and had hidden it in the mansion before he died. Also, the area has been dealing with a serial killer called the Bat whose only surviving victim called him "a man without a face" and one of the maids that quit said she saw a faceless man, I'm sure it's fine.
It's a very classic whodunit mystery, with every character trying to either find the money or find the identity of the Bat while the women in the house have to deal with him sneaking in at night.
Do you think they ever explored each other's bodies?
Honestly, the movie spent a lot more time with the Bat than I expected. It was fun to watch him sneak around and see what he did next, and his actor gave him a really fun physicality that made his silent, expressionless scenes enjoyable.
The twist upon his reveal also holds up pretty well. Looking back, you can pick up bits of dialogue and scenes that help broadcast who he was.
I also liked the dynamic of the other pair of women that show up around the halfway point, as the wife of the embezzlement scapegoat and one of her husband's bankteller coworkers. They're sweet and help keep the money in mind so the embezzlement case never gets entirely bowled over by the killer mystery.
As for Vincent Price, well, his character knows what's going on almost every step of the way. He's a friend of the bank owner that stole the million, and when his friend offered him half to fake his death, he decided to make it real for a full million. He just needs to find where the money's hidden and- as revealed in a confrontation- get rid of the Bat to keep him from finding the money first.
I don't want to give away too much, because it is in the public domain now and you can find so many versions on Youtube and Tubi. Definitely anyone that likes murder mysteries and big houses with hidden rooms, check it out!
