BLUE ROOM CH2
“And I always will be--I know it--I can’t help it. I don’t know what it would be like not to be afraid of something.”
Afraid of her mother’s sulky fits--afraid of offending Uncle Benjamin--afraid of becoming a target for Aunt Wellington’s contempt--afraid of Aunt Isabel’s biting comments--afraid of Uncle James’ disapproval--afraid of offending the whole clan’s opinions and prejudices--afraid of not keeping up appearances--afraid to say what she really thought of anything--afraid of poverty in her old age. Fear--fear--fear--she could never escape from it. It bound her and enmeshed her like a spider’s web of steel. - ch2

That passage resonates within me like a bell being wrung at Christmas Time! When I was younger, I was always compared to one of my younger sister. She was really pretty and she was more outgoing and I was. I was more introverted that she was. But I did have this huge imagination can come up with things that she couldn’t do which I’m sure draw for bonkers. But on the physical beauty she has those classic European facsimiles, and her skin tone falls into that darker olive tone.
I have more of an ethnic look in my skin color is darker. I can see, as she’s looking at herself in the mirror, and I can almost picture myself doing the same thing picking myself apart. And fearing that no one was going to love me.
The greatest battle we have against ourselves is fear. Franklin Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
Valancy is so afraid of disappointing the clan, and by the way I love it that she uses the word clan! But back to the fear. We al place an enormous amount stress on ourselves because of others opinions. Valancy is utterly despondent I her thinking that she is ugly. It’s crippling the control her family has on her.
To such an extent that it threatens her health. She cannot go to see a doctor, because of the vitriol she will experience from her family. That’s just crazy to me, but then again, this is probably how the life of a single woman was at the turn of the century (AKA 1890-1910) I don’t think WWI had happened yet and I don’t think the women’s suffragette movement was as world wide spread.
I do like the idea that Valancy is beginning to have rebellious thoughts as to going to a doctor that her family doesn’t approve of. And that she’s willing to use some of the money that her father left her to go see that doctor.
