Watching the newer Tumblr bloggers learn about the injured cat scam is kind of adorable.

You did it sweetie, you spotted the scam! Good job. Have a lollipop. Yes, it was definitely a new scam spotted just by you! No, no one had ever seen it before! We're very proud of you. Now, take your rifle back out to the porch and keep shooting the bots for another hour or two until dinnertime. So proud of you!

(I say this will all the love in the world, seriously. Glad y'all figured that one out before too many people got taken in.)

It occurs to me that adding a feature that can and will only be used for a single day by actual humans is

a pretty great way to encourage people to interact on this platform

a kind of excellent Turing test when combined with other human blogging behaviours

a lovely reminder that we can be united in a common, ridiculous goal

The bots are getting smarter

I've had an absolutely massive influx of bots and I've noticed some are getting a lot better at not looking like bots so here is my top tip

These all look a lot more like actual users. They still lack posts but they're not obviously bots at first glance (the first one even had a gif as it's header) but going to the follow page reveals that they are following the same groups of people as the hundreds of other bots I've been getting

So if you're not sure if a follower is just new or a bot, compare who they are following to all the other bots

OKAY TUMBLR what fresh hell is this???? I am not following any of these people, the posts don't appear to be blaze posts, and I never liked anything by them. They aren't marked as sponsored either. "In your orbit" is disabled. I can't click on the posts and most these blogs don't even appear to Exist.

So the question is why are they filling up my dash??!!

My immense disappointment when I'm followed by undulatingbust only to find out that its a bot.

I have to take it out behind the shed regardless, but why in the world does this new round of bots have such fun names?

The most annoying thing about the latest wave of pornbots is that their usernames are plausible tumblr names. I was kinda disappointed that nakedpardner and floppyoccupant weren't people.
