James reached up and gripped her chin, pulling her face to his so that they were nose to nose. His hold was again, firm, but lacked any violence or true anger.

“Promise not to run?”

It was a desperate plea. One that, had she not been looking directly into his eyes, she would have missed the hurt in it.

“Not this time.” She whispered, already missing the way his mouth felt against her skin.

He shook his head, pulling her in for a fierce and bruising kiss that had her eyes rolling back and her toes curling.

“Not good enough Evans, your habit of running away? Running away from your friends, from me? It ends tonight. I’m not going to torture myself with a taste.” His hazel eyes were dark behind his skewed frames, pupils blown so black she could only see a thin ring of gold.

#this post is about me walking through the sludge in the dark to break into the lab and sneak a peek at someone else’s thesis from some years #ago #to check the title page to make extra sure i am formatting mine right even though there is already an example on the online submission form #(i say ‘break in’ like i don’t have keycard access)#for a minute i thought i heard my adviser’s voice from around the corner where her office is #contemplated checking if she was there and being like. hey what’s up what are you doing here at this hour (she almost always leaves early)#and also asking her my question which i just emailed her about the other form that’s due tomorrow #but ultimately the appeal of immedaite answers (which. low probability even if she was there tbh) was not worth the risk #of not only having to explain why i was also at the devil’s sacrament (lab at 8pm)#but why i was there wearing only shorts and a tshirt under my cloak when it’s 37°F outside and raining #because i don’t really have a good answer for that #screams into the void #i guess this can also go into the #me writing my thesis #tag. it’s not really about writing but close enough

okay having now finished the crimson flower route I honestly don't know how I'm gonna do any of the others and have to side with the church like

obviously I realize this fictional church is not the actual catholic church but hoooo boy the similarities are clearly not accidental and hearing rhea scream at me for like 10 hours of gameplay about how I'm going to burn in hell for being a worthless sinner is...........yikes lady. I'm not gonna be able to unhear that on any of the other routes.

now I've gotten bits and pieces of her side of things- she's lost her family, she's obsessed with getting her mother back, I'm sure there's more to it that will look more sympathetic on other routes, but...I dunno, she struck me as bad news from the very start of the game. not only does jeralt not trust her from the get go, but she doesn't exactly start off in the most flattering light. what is it like, chapter two or three when she starts executing the western church "heretics"?

I just feel like I've seen this kind of person before. she looks sweet and gentle, she acts warm and loving to your face- and as long as you stay on her side, in her good graces, and faithful to her religion- she'll continue to be that way. it's not insincere, exactly, her moments of kindness and affection. she genuinely means it- but it comes with terms and conditions.

she's not very different than any other zealot I've known. put one foot wrong, step out of her good books, do something she considers a sin, and she turns on a dime. and now granted, what byleth and edelgard do in crimson flower isn't exactly a small thing, but still- rhea struck me right away as the type to smile or frown based on whether or not you're meeting her approval. do the right thing in her eyes and you're rewarded with kindness. do the wrong thing and she turns cold. and clearly she's quite unforgiving, that's made apparent well before the time skip.

and that is very familiar to me. I knew people like rhea. I've been hurt by people like rhea. and admittedly it's hard to look past that projection when the game didn't even try to make the church of seiros not look like a direct rip off the catholic church. but whether or not you think the church or edelgard are in the right (or neither, which is probably the correct answer), there's just no denying that rhea isn't exactly a good person- and I'd wager even in routes where she isn't blatantly playing the role of villain, she's not exactly the hero either. the game certainly doesn't set her up to be one.

and this isn't even getting into any of the shit with byleth and sothis, mind.

#it also makes edelgard being cloaked in devilish imagery fascinating #in any other story edelgard is obviously the villain and the church are obviously good #it's very jesus vs lucifer #but this game gives you the option to side with the devil and you know what it's awesome #like I did at points kinda feel like the bad guy #especially when we were killing the other students #but that feels like the point of the route honestly #to position the devil as the hero actually #maybe the church is corrupt #maybe god isn't what the faithful think he is #maybe the sinners are actually the saints #also if this post winds up being seen in the search feature HELLO #I have NOT PLAYED ANY ROUTE EXCEPT CF #so no spoilers and no discourse with spoilers ya weirdos #I'm working on it
