Owned: No, library Page count: Moa was born into slavery, knows no other life. But that doesn't stop him wanting more. Even though he's only fourteen years old, he is ready to fight for his freedom, and the freedom of all Akane people in Jamaica. He has everything to gain, and everything to fight for. Nobody free 'til everybody free. The blood remembers. My summary: 180 My rating: 4/5 My commentary:

This is a relatively short one that's been staring at me from the shelves for a while - I had it on display in October for Black History Month, and I read the summary then and thought it was interesting, so I wanted to check it out for myself. This is a short telling of Tacky's Rebellion in Jamaica in the 1760s - a slave revolt where the enslaved people rose up against their enslavers, but were brutally suppressed. Many of the fighters who survived the battles took their lives in the caves beneath Jamaica rather than be punished by their enslavers or return to slavery. It is, as is much of the history of slavery, a horrible little corner of history, but an important one to learn about.

The thing I found the most interesting about this book was how well it balanced the need to educate people about the historical incident and the need to tell a good story. Moa is an engaging viewpoint character, with a big heart and a lot of strength, who struggles with the morality of his actions even while seeing the necessity of them. And as a whole, the characters involved in Tacky's Rebellion as presented here are are very well humanised. The men aren't just fighters, they're people too. They have dreams of living free and growing old unbothered by white enslavers. They love their families and their friends. They honour their gods, primarily Asase Ya and Nyame, and mourn those who fall in the fight. And, importantly to the narrative, they look after Moa. Moa is the youngest of the rebels, and Tacky and the others make it increasingly clear that they do not expect him to fight, they do not expect him to lay down his life for the cause, because he is young and should get a future. They leave him out of the pact they make to die rather than return to slavery, and Tacky explicitly tells him to go back to his parents rather than lose his life. Moa stays as long as he can, a testament to his own courage and devotion, but eventually his life is saved after the chaos of the final battle and he returns to the plantation he is from, then takes off to the mountains and to an uncertain future.

This is a good device - not only in emphasising the humanity of the rebels, but also in giving a bittersweet rather than complete downer ending. Moa survives, but he's lost the fight and so many of his friends, and there's no guarantee of his safety. His parents and sister are still enslaved. It's showing history rather than whitewashing it; giving as good an ending as can be given. It's so clear that the author has a great amount of respect for the rebels and their cause - not surprising, given that he himself is Jamaican, and was told the stories of these events by his family. The author's personal connections with the story also add to its authenticity. All of the black characters talk in Jamaican dialect, and the narration is also delivered in the same dialect. It makes the white characters' standard English seem that much more jarring by contrast, othering them - interesting given that dialect is often used to other the characters who speak with it in white English fiction.

Finally, the last thing I thought was interesting was something I've alluded to earlier - the morality. When the rebels take over the plantations, they kill the white 'masters' and overseers, along with their wives and children. Moa, and a few other of the rebels, aren't really okay with the whole 'killing children' thing. In fact, nobody's really okay with it - those who see the necessity of it are still uncomfortable with the action, but they argue that those children would grow up to become enslavers, and is one white child worth the brutalisation and enslavement of their children? It's messy, and its complicated. There aren't any right choices, but the narrative makes the reasons why the characters did what they did clear, and maintains their sympathy throughout. Again, not whitewashing history, just showing it as it happened. It's admirable, and it's a very good read.

Day 4, Smithsonian African Museum of History and Culture, & Shakespeare

Today's schedule looked light but it was not. The is nothing easy about the Smithsonian African Museum of History and Culture, but it is necessary. My mind continues to be blown by the current movement in this country to block diversity and equity training and to ban books that portray perspective different than your own. Actually - it is far beyond having my mind blown - it's making me furious!!

The truth is that there are not many smiles to be found here and Katelyn covered her eyes many times but both she and Sagan persisted and continued to read and watch and learn. I continually watched them, their faces, their body language, their pace and I moved them along or held them back when necessary. You cannot whitewash the institution of slavery and the role of our government or the churches played in the growth of it. You cannot separate how and who built this country with what has become of it.

One does NOT need to feel guilty as a white person, but one does have to - at the VERY LEAST - make an effort to understand we live in a systemically racist world where - recently - many of the blatant racists have been given an microphone instead of being driven back into their dark holes. White privilege exists and if people could simply look at the trajectory of their on journey - it is so obvious. It is NOT that hard. The kids I am with get it. Katelyn - who will be 12 in August said as were were preparing to leave, "Could we just grow up!"

This museum is filled with facts and artifacts. Many are celebratory and many are horrific and barbaric. But it is the truth. It is a reminder that you don't know what you don't know. I took very few pictures here but it was certainly more fun to be the celebratory areas and when I asked the kids WHY we needed this part of the museum, they both said it was to record the achievements of Black citizens and to inspire Black kids. I concur. I was also pleased to see how many of the Black heroes my kids knew. Katelyn was blown away by Jessie Owens' stride.

We spent the morning going through the "celebration" part of the museum where we saw a dress worn by Marion Anderson among so many other things. The kids learned about the Green Book and I'm embarrassed to say they did NOT know what it was prior to today. Clearly, I am slipping.

We also visited a newly installed art exhibit. The art was impactful - and Katelyn said - "Is THIS still celebration?" after seeing a collage of George Junius Stinney Jr., the youngest person ever executed by the US government. He was 14 and they (WE) had to modify the electric chair due to his tiny size. He was arrested in March 1944 and executed in June 1944 Justice is swift - in some cases. But... after a re-examination of Stinney's case began in 2004, and several individuals and the Northeastern University School of Law sought a judicial review. Stinney's murder conviction was vacated in 2014, seventy years after he was executed, with a South Carolina court ruling that he had not received a fair trial.

How many times has that kind of things happened?

It was certainly NOT "celebration" but it was the truth and that artist brought this horrific injustice into the light again so that adults and kids as young as ours could indeed know about it. This is not the only case of this type of injustice - FYI! Read JUST MERCY.

We ate in the cafe at the museum and plunged into the rough stuff - as if the art exhibit hadn't been rough enough. I took NO photos. But I can promise you that there was a whole lot of learning going on.

Around 3:00 we headed out and "home." We had a lot of de-briefing to do, go over the summary of tonight's play, Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and a change of clothes on our schedule. We had a lovely dinner at Founding Farmers - a farm to table restaurant and - well - everyone looked marvelous!!

After dinner we headed to the play.

The plot is.. well, it IS a Shakespearean comedy... complicated. A person is in disguise and he/she falls in love with this powerful person but they don't know it yet and then after all kinds of shenanigans the presumed dead twin of the disguised person appears and is confused with that person - but quickly falls in love and marries a different person who is important to the plot. Then there is a fool - or several fools - and it all takes place in a local bar. - with a live band and lots of dancing and singing Confused yet!??! We were!

Even at intermission, we were not quite on top of the plot. so Sagan googled "Twelfth Night Love Chart " and we studied this:

Even the chart cracked us up. BUT we kept at it and finally it all come together. We all LOVED it and were laughing and laughing and laughing. Did I mention we had front row seats? Daphne even got asked to take a shot (of water) with the cast as the play starting unrolling the complexities of the plot. After all - it was set in a bar...

The bottom line is this: We loved it!! The actors were engaging and creative and we talked about it and laughed all the way home - which was just about 3 blocks. I was so proud of these kids - the only kids in the audience - FYI. They were not afraid of Shakespeare and even I, who love Shakespeare's tragedies and histories but usually will pass on a comedy, thoroughly enjoyed it.

One more thing. This young man and young woman who are learning so much about history and culture and life can still have fun - so as we waiting for the theater to seat us - they engaged in a thumb war. "One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war." (Can you see me smiling?). I'm a lucky girl!

I think it was a day well spent.

The mythology of the Siren, Mermaid, Water Spirits & Mami Wata and it’s origins within black feminity.

Today I had to listen to other another black woman rant about how mermaids/sirens/mami wata are evil low key. So this educational post was born in response. 

Did you really think the divine essence of the black feminine wouldn’t protect itself ? That energy exists for a reason.  Suddenly it’s evil, to have teeth and protect yourself from predators. Water is a precious resource. You will be tested to see if you are deserving of it or not. Also these spirits will defend natural resources so they don’t get fucked up by human greed. 

It’s common for some places in Africa for people to offer the Sirens/Mami Wata/Water spirits or make an offerings/contracts with them in order to use the resources on their land. It also keeps the white ppl away too because they cause so much trouble.

Sirens are also associated with being the killers of children and men, but often this is completely misrepresented intentionally.

Men fear the power of the siren because she can override the patriarchy at core and can completely unravel them. The orgins of many water spirits lie in matriachal societies, temples divine feminine and motherhood. This is why temples and sacred magikal knowledge was intentionally destroyed and stolen, especially to empower the white patriarch.

Sirens are also described as thiefs of children and child killers. Sirens have been known to kidnap kids who were being abused or have were murdered near water and take them to their kingdom to restore them.

Sometimes the child returns, sometimes they are not. However in general they are big on kidnapping people, mostly women and giving them powers, if they decide to return. The idea of them eating and killing children, was a lie perpetuated by Greeks to cover up some truly horrific acts. Unfortunate these false accusations have been allowed to continue to perpetuate.

If a siren is acting in a predatory way, there is a reason why as their energy as been disturbed. Sirens are natural guardians. 

So the real question is . . . what did you do ? Did you destroy their habitat ? Abuse a child or a person ? Commit an egregious act against a woman ie rape/murder etc ? Disrespect a sacred place, the land, the seas or rivers ? Steal precious resources that weren’t yours to take ?

These sacred traditions are more than just deities, spirits and our ancestors. All forms of ATR are access to our spiritual mind state as an entire community. When you move in Vodou, you can sense the whole of black consciousness and all of our problem spots, specifically  areas that need healing. 

Oxum-Oshun, Olokun, Yemaya, the Mami Wata, La Baliene, La Siren, Met Agwe, The Simbi - these are all spirits with a connection to waters. Water is life and has always been inherently associated feminine energy. I’m not going into detail about all these cross connections but let’s chat about La Sirene, specifically.

La Sirene, Queen of all Mermaids is more than just a powerful sorceress and queen of song/music and dreams, she is also a keeper of secrets an a guardian of sacred memories & knowledge.

Many of the souls of slaves, from the Transatlantic slave trade that were thrown off the boats into the ocean are her children, citizens and warriors now. She comforts them eternally & they live in paradise. That doesn’t mean all of these souls are at rest, plenty continuously ask their mother if they will be avenged, especially the young children. She also has a close connection with the Indigenous Taino. The isle of Hispaniola also known as Haiti (Ayiti) & the Dominican Republic is her most known domain. 

Let’s not act like slavery and colonization was a cake walk. Rape was common place and mermaids, water spirits offered African and Indigenous women protection and power over men. They became demonized overtime for their hypnotic powers and killing men, who often overstepped their boundaries. Women could leave offerings to these spirits, work or commune with them and be quickly avenged or gain great power and wealth. All of this was threatening to the white patriarchal standard.

La Sirene’s presence in Haiti and other merfolk tales that float around the Caribbean/West Indies, is not without purpose. She has ties to many people and many different cultures. Her sacred symbols are global. This is why I speculate she is much older than people think. La Sirene, is a fairly young evolution. She clearly has ties to much older things. Her older names might have been lost but she has evolved, to save her self and also document other forgotten elements of history in the process. There are those who speculate that La Sirene is the embodiment of a cross mixed culture, the evolution of Indigenous & African water spirits combined, due to the excess trauma of colonization and so the Mermaid Queen was born. Others will argue that she is the Orisha Yemaya but a newer avatar of her.  I hate to argue semantics but I will say this, she exists and her presence is felt to this day, all around the world. 

La Sirene is often depicted as a mulatto woman with eyes like the sea but if you have been blessed to see her in dream state, she does appear sometimes as a brown or dark skinned skinned woman of possibly mixed Indigenous/African ancestry with glowing hypnotic eyes.  Alot of her older depictions, deal with colorism and slavery, but as things have grown in the modern world this imagery has begun to change. However mermaids, are known for their shapeshifting powers - to truly behold her true form, is a gift reserved for the rare few. 

As a keeper of the mysteries, La Sirene also access to many forgotten things in the black subconscious. The element of water is an intensely psychic sign.  Water is her domain, and what is the human body 80% of? WATER! The truth does not hide from her hypnotic eyes. This sacred connection to water and her essence, also means you can  track forgotten elements black history and connect to other deities/cultures who’ve had contact with her & her whole court or other black water spirits as a whole. So let’s take a short historical trip down memory lane.

The Greeks & Black women. Sirens, Aphrodite, Sibyls and other Children of Water 🧜🏾‍♀️

The deity Aphrodite/Venus is of Grecian and Roman legend.  

A little known magikal fact is that Aphrodite/Venus is half siren. She is a child of the water, she was literally birthed this way after Uranus got his balls cut off & thrown into the sea. Much of her Venusian influence and powers of love and beauty come from this element. Now my Mambo doesn’t like mentioning it but Aphrodite, is tolerated by the oceanic court of sirens/mermaids. Any child of water, falls under the domain of the queen. La Sirene has a sort of strange fondness for her and so does Aphrodite for her. However this doesn’t mean they are best friends.  It’s tentative friendship at best and comes with some perks. Aphrodite works quickly for children of water sirens and often will send mermaids to her devotees who misbehave. She has deliberately placed me around her people have pissed her off, to cause mischief. She’s quite petty but also  very generous. I won’t go as far to dare and say she is in the queen’s court, but she does curry favor with the queen. Being born of water, her half siren/mermaid influence has definitely attributed to legends of her beauty in myth but also her treachery with men 🧜🏾‍♀️😂. She clearly also has some sort of homesickness for the world underneath the water, because many of her offerings are gifts of pearls, kisses, sea shells, beauty products etc. Anyone who serves the Mermaid Queen knows the meaning behind those gifts. If you’re a black gyal with water or siren energy and decide to work with Aphrodite, do it!  If you ever irritate her, the least she’ll do is give you pimples and fuck up your skin, she won’t have the full power to completely fuck up your love life like she does with the white girls.  And let me tell you, she has completely ruined some white girls lives by giving them terrible lovers or men.  

The trident 🔱 is known for its connection in Greek and Hindu cultures.  However La Sirene or other African water spirits are depicted carrying it, which is largely ignored in the occult world.

You can track the trident in Hinduism, with the serpent spirits, the nagas or Lord Shiva but let’s focus on it’s Grecian connection. The usage of the trident and Poseidon, even in mainstream society today is associated with him.  This lets us know there is a connection between the mermaids, merfolk and La Sirene/African water spirits. Poseidon’s trident was rumored to made in Athens by the Cyclops - this is the city of Athena. So now we can track an element of black history all the way to Poseidon & Athena. Keep that in your thoughts we’ll come back to that later.

Tridents were also used ceremonially in Africa & India as well, as scepters, tribal weapons and religious symbols.

They were also associated with the sea faring people and fishing. It’s highly likely the origins of the trident are cross mixed between these two societies. Indo-African relations, go back to the Bronze age and the Indus Valley civilization. Which means traveling over by sea to reach each other was necessary. There is historical evidence of African millet being found in a Indian city Chanhudaro, including a cemetary or burial ground for African women.  Maritime relations between these two groups existed before Grecian & the Egyptian Ptolemaic dynasties.

Now of course there are some deranged historians that will try to whitewash history and say the trident has its origins from the labyrs but the Ancient Greeks & Africans/Indians interacted regularly. The trident also looks nothing like a labyrs, which is quite literally a double sided axe.  This is one of the more painful obvious pieces of white washing and historical revisionism. 

Regardless, the trident is associated with water, ceremonial/religious purposes, fishing, battling in the coliseum and the symbol of power for a few African,  Black diasporian an Hindu deities.

🧜🏾‍♀️ Oracles & Sibyls

Some sibyls/oracles were known to be African prophetesses/Mamissi to the Mami Wata/Sirens in Africa, some were stolen or captured by Greeks or Romans, sold into slavery and made to be oracles, some of whom became quite famous in legend. Their connection to these water spirits, is what gave them their gift of prophecy. Not every sibyl or oracle was African but SOME were.  This lead to the sharing and theft of sacred knowledge. It’s likely these women shared this sacred information, with their colleagues, some whom may or may not have been enslaved or kept in these temple and likely this information was traded, for their freedom, power or money etc. This gave way to the usage of sacred spirits and magick being used by men. A great example of this is the snake spirits of the genii, genius spirits (not to be mistaken with genies) and which then evolved into a diluted lesser energy in Greek society being known as daemons (not to be confused with goetic demons) Instead of a woman commanding these specific energies/spirits, the patriarchs decided that these specifics powers were only worthy of being used by men. These spirits were whitewashed, adopted into their religious practices and said to only be given to men at birth. No woman was allowed to possess them anymore.

🧜🏾‍♀️ The whitewashing of Medusa & Lamia. 

In mainstream society these two women stories have been white washed but also to hide a very shameful history and narrative. These two were beautiful women, in older stories of black black mythology were known to be black and they were children of water & daughters of the powerful water spirit/snake/siren divine mother/feminine goddess. 

Medusa was raped by the GREECIAN GOD OF THE SEA, POSEIDON  and Athena covered it up, refused to avenge her and punished her by making her ugly to everyone. It’s speculated in several magikal circles that the snakes in her hair were actually dreads, due to their lack of understanding of black hair and also allegorically might have been a reference to her devotion to the fish or water snake, great mother goddess. A child of the divine feminine, mother goddess was assaulted in a temple by a man and a woman covered it up & celebrated it.

Let’s start there ... cuz this story says a lot! It’s one of the first historical cases  in myth that really documents the issues that surround the black feminine specifically and it was intentionally whitewashed. Then to add insult to injury, Athena made her hideous to all men and her chopped off her head and used as a symbol of protection but also a subtle sign of disrespect to the fullest. This still goes on to this day.

In fact ALGOL, the demon star, which is considered to be strongest protective magick talisman in the occult world today is the HEAD OF MEDUSA. The child of water! BITCH! This energy is invoked constantly and the spirit of medusa is never allowed to rest.

However these egregious acts did not come without a price. Athena at time was a goddess of fertility. However desecrating a child of water or the sirens, is seen as an attack by the divine feminine and can will cause people to be afflicted with fertility and other mental health issues as well. This is speculative but it’s also likely that after this they were constantly visited by droughts, floods or repeating issues with water sanitation & purity after this. Lowered fertility rates and miscarriages might be more prominent, for Athenians and Athena devotees & likely continues to this day.

Devotees of Athena may also develop severe issues when it to their mental health because of this connection. They completely lose touch with their feminine energy and become extremely misogynistic after continued work with her.

Not only did Athena, cause Medusa to be seen as hideous throughout the land but she celebrated when she was murdered and proudly wore Medusa’s decapitated head on her shield. From the feminist eye this virgin deity/woman was extremely male identified and adhered to the patriarchal standard. She was tested by the divine feminine and failed.

Even more strange, Athena’s birth allegorically proclaims her essential character: her wisdom is drawn from the head of a male god; the bond of affection between father and daughter; her championship of heroes and male causes, born as she was from the male, and not from a mother’s womb. A dreaded goddess of war, she remained a virgin and a servant of the patriarchal society and remains so to this day. She is the misogynistic cool girl and very asexual at the core. In fact if you explore more of her mythos, it becomes very clear she hates women. I’m bewildered at how she has become associated with lesbians and the feminine at large, when it’s been very clear that she was intent on transcending her gender from the very beginning, but never managed to escape it.  

To top it off, I’ll leave you with this quote from Aeschylus’ Oresteia by Athena:

“There is no mother anywhere who gave me birth, and, but for marriage, I am always for the male with all my heart, and strongly on my father’s side. So, in a case where the wife has killed her husband, lord of the house, her death shall not mean most to me.”

Queen Lamia was a said to incredible beauty who seduced Zeus, (a literal man whore) which as made Hera jealous. Hera cursed Lamia with infertility and insomnia. She went insane and is said to have killed her own children and ate them. Zeus is said to be the one who gifted her prophecy and gave her the ability to take out her eyes, so she would not be irritated at the site of other happy mothers.

She became associated with a child eating monster who was half woman and half snake, which ties into the Libyan snake cults. She was associated with phantoms, the shapshifting laimai or empusai and the daemon spirits.

Medusa and Lamia were Libyan by heritage and came from a place in Africa where temples to the water snake mother goddess & divine feminine were common before they were destroyed by invaders intentionally. These women likely had extreme gifts of seduction, mind control and other abilities etc. It’s highly likely that Queen Lamia used her powers of seduction, at the behest of her people to save them from colonization and was demonized for it. Zeus’s temple was in Cyrene in Lybia, so this is far more than an allegorical story. This may be a real life story that was disguised in mythos. Unfortunately deeper research into this subject has turned up many dead ends for me. It’s highly likely Medusa was a priestess of the the matriarchal Mami Watas or water goddess/snake spirits and was likely raped intentionally in Athena’s temple, as a show loyalty to the rising patriarchy by descrating the symbolism of the great mother and the divine feminine. This was likely an attempt to lessen power and status of the matriachal societies that existed at the time. Rape was common war tactic amongst colonizers and news of such disgrace would likely spread like wildfire. This also solidified Athena’s place amongst the male gods and gaining her their respect. Athena and her devotees went a step further to show their allegiance to the patriarchy, by stripping Medusa of her beauty supposedly and exiling her, then parading her decapitated head on shields, when going into battle likely with Libyan enemies.

This is just a brief explanation of a few horrific acts in history, which were whitewashed & explain why the essence of the black feminine has evolved to become more protective, predatory and fierce. She learned to defend herself. Now she kills those who threaten her. 

Fun history tip: Usually anytime you see a snake in Grecian mythology, just know something got whitewashed, because the truth was really fucked up, made them look really bad & a black woman was there.

Yes, mermaids/sirens/snakes & the mami watas can be scary at times but that’s what stepping into mysticism of deep waters is like. Water is capable of many things, it is one of the most powerful elements on earth. It can nourish you and kill you, and that’s the beauty of it really.

We should all be grateful the black feminine is so beautiful, fierce & scares the living daylights out of everyone.

Hi! So, ever since I was really young I've always been fascinated by Egyptian Mythology, and really want to write a horror/drama adaptation of the first part of the "Death of Osiris" where it shows the circumstances leading up to Set killing his brother.

A central theme of the story is to show how human the gods are, despite the fact that the vast majority of them act completely indifferent and "superior" to humanity, seeing them as mere ants (the exception of course being Osiris).

I'm particularly worried about my depiction of Isis, as she's normally seen as a pillar of good but in this interpretation she is fairly morally grey, but that concern pales in comparison to my biggest problem.

I'm a half white, half SEA sheltered teen living in Canada who has never been to Egypt.

Do I scrap the story? I don't want to appropriate anything, and the last thing I want to do is take away opportunities for people who are actually connected to Egyptian Mythology to tell their stories! The story means a lot to me, but I don't want to continue something if there's a possibility that I might end up doing harm.

Death of Osiris adaption, Egyptian Mythology

You’re asking whether it’s okay for you to write a story based on Egyptian mythology when you are not yourself Egyptian. This is a rubber stamp question, which as stated in the WWC FAQ, we no longer accept. However, I want to take this opportunity to make a few points regarding ancient Egypt and Egyptian mythology in western media. This topic has also been covered on the blog before (check out the ancient Egypt tag).

Ancient Egypt is among the ancient civilizations that have inspired Western media the most, and there are countless stories and retellings based on ancient Egypt and Egyptian myth out there. The vast majority of those have been written by people with little to no connection to Egypt or even Africa as a whole, and they often represent ancient Egypt inaccurately. One prevalent issue is the whitewashing of ancient Egyptians, who tend to be portrayed as light-skinned, brown or even white, when in reality, all evidence points to the fact that the people indigenous to Egypt were Black (like everyone else in Africa). 

There was certainly a great deal of mixing and cultural exchange going on with other civilizations around the Mediterranean, and some scholars believe it’s anachronistic to even describe ancient Egyptians according to modern racial categories, because there is no evidence that such categories existed or that skin color mattered that much in ancient Egyptian society. But the fact stands that if we were to try and fit ancient Egyptians into our definitions of race as we understand it in North America, they would undoubtedly be Black.

This isn’t only a matter of factual accuracy. The question of the race of ancient Egyptians featured prominently in white supremacist pseudo-scientific arguments that were used to justify slavery, colonialism and genocide. It would be irresponsible to write about ancient Egypt, even if it’s “only” fiction, without taking this history into account.

Here are a few things that writers who want to include ancient Egypt (or ancient Egyptian-coded fantasy cultures) in their stories can think about:

When you think of ancient Egypt, what do you picture? What are the base assumptions, imagery, general knowledge you’ve absorbed about ancient Egypt through your exposure to the ways this civilization is represented in media?

Now, question all of these. Where do they come from? Who came up with them? What actual historical facts are they based on? Chances are, a lot of it is inaccurate.

Start over. Read the work of Black academics on ancient Egypt. Educate yourself on the most recent research on this topic. Read fiction by authors who represent ancient Egypt and ancient Egyptian-coded societies without white-washing them. N. K. Jemisin’s The Killing Moon is a favorite of mine.

If you skip these steps, you are likely to reproduce the dominant media portrayals of ancient Egypt that already exist, and feed into the inaccuracies and erasure they perpetuate.

Am I the only one concern how people like dasha-through-the-snow try to downplay the severity of these clearly anti education bills being pass in places like Texas and Florida. The reason why I'm calling them anti education bills because they are rewrite history. Keeping people, especially children, ignorant of their history and how that history still effecting them today.

You are not the only one, and you should continue calling them anti-education bills. It bears repeating, CRT has never been taught below a college-grade level. Anytime someone talks about keeping CRT out of high school/middle school/grade school, "CRT" means "whatever it means most to that particular person at that particular time and will change in the next five minutes when they talk about it again". And people have been very clear about what they mean when they mean CRT. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement as a whole? CRT. Native American genocide? CRT. The South fought a war to keep their slaves? CRT (some woman actually pulled her kids out of school for that, wild shit). Slavery happened and it was evil? CRT. Write a book as a black person? CRT.

It's a very blatant Trojan Horse used by conservative politicians to get into schools and remove anything that has made America look bad ever. And they do it for three reasons. One, anti-education is generally their thing because soft and malleable brains filled with not much is how you become conservative. A worldview informed by intuition and gut feelings, black and white narratives about the justice of comfort and the evil shaker-of-the-status-quo, and the ability to AT LEAST not feel too bothered about human suffering are basically required for the position, among other things. Two, and let's be honest here, conservatives really like racism. Not even in the "subtly" racist ways like "prisons good, cops good, war on drugs good, BLM literally launched a nuclear missile at a city and blasted it into the ocean, killing billions", but they constantly simp for the Confederacy and whitewash (lmao) them. Those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it, so ask yourself why they're so invested in making sure nobody knows the history of racism.

And third, which I think is the biggest reason why they're so hooked on CRT, secondary even to racism. The fact that they're interfering so blatantly with education is okay with them because education was never the top priority. Charlie Kirk, prominent conservative voice and founder/executive director of Turning Point USA, a conservative astroturf that invades colleges to spread bullshit and harass professors, said it himself in his debate against Vaush on Tim Pool's show. Education isn't the point of education, it's gratitude. Is it nice if people graduate high school knowing about math, language, history, the arts, and science? Sure, but what he wants most is for people to graduate college feeling grateful towards their country and wanting to do anything to ensure its betterment. America can't be the best because the people of America worked to correct their past evils (to some extent), have made great innovations and progress, and strive to still do better. America needs to be the best because it is the best, was the best, always will be the best, and its citizenry are and need to be devoted utterly to laying down even their own lives to ensure America's continued existence, which itself is proof of it's own superiority.

And anti-CRT craze was and always will be conservative politicians trying to get their hands wrist-deep in what children are learning because the thought of America not being seen as a heavenly body of infallible moral virtue makes them almost as sad as people saying "racism is bad".

From Bridgerton to Sanditon—Putting Island Queen in a Period Drama Context

This article contains book spoilers for Island Queen and a trigger warning for racism and sexual assault.

Caribbean history is often ignored in US discussions of the era, despite myself and many other Americans having ancestry from this part of the world. Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park has extended references to Caribbean slavery but many adaptations sidestep these implications or briefly address them before moving back to the white main characters. In addition, the focus is often on male leaders of rebellions such as Toussaint L’Overture leading the Haitian rebellion, or on women with island ancestry such as Dido Elizabeth from the movie Belle living in England. All are written by white novelists and screenwriters who miss cultural nuances and are unaware of subconscious bias. Island Queen, Vanessa Riley’s latest foray into Black historical fiction reveals a hidden figure of Caribbean history. Dorothy Kirwan was born into slavery in Montserrat, but secured her own freedom by becoming an astute businesswoman. 

Riley’s novel takes readers on a complex but emotionally fufilling journey which brings up serious historical questions on slavery, class, gender, and business ethics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Riley’s novel is the answer for fans who feel recent historical dramas prioritize varying levels of whitewashing or escapism over featuring real Black history. 

Kirwan’s story has incredible relevance today as many look to understand the enduring legacies of British colonialism and the slave trade in the late 18th and early 19th Century. Her diary does not exist but Riley assembled birth records and other primary sources to trace her life. This is in contrast to sources such as the anonymously published novel The Woman Of Colour which historians are still looking to corroborate authorship and connections to real Caribbean figures.   Kirwan at times the mirror image of the fictionalized story of July from The Long Song, but there are also flash points of difference along class and timeframe context. July was born roughly 50 years later than Kirwan in Jamaica.  In addition, Dorothy’s life journey takes the reader from Montserrat to Demerara (off the coast of modern day Guyana), Grenada, and Dominica. Most importantly, Riley is an Caribbean-American writer while Andrea Levy wrote The Long Song for Black British readers. 

Dorothy’s in-character first person narration is the glue that holds the story together through frequent flashbacks to her childhood and young adulthood to her life in 1824 as a grandmother. The main theme of self-determination in a world where rich white men decide the rules everyone must play keeps the reader engaged even when it is not clear where the plot is heading. In the present plot, Dorothy has returned to London after many years away to petition colonial leaders to retain hard-won rights for Black and biracial women in Demerara. These unequal laws threaten Dorothy’s children and grandchildren and could even take away the freedom and inheritance she has spent her whole life to build. 

Bridgerton’s critics will find solace in Island Queen. Those who wanted the Black aristocracy of Haiti and other Caribbean islands featured in the series will find this history at the center. Kirwan navigates a world with inherent inequality, despite how much she has achieved in property ownership and savings. When she interacts with British and colonial elites, they never treat her as if she has power over them. The racial caste system in existence influences all of her interactions. After a breakup, she takes up an offer from Prince William (Queen Victoria’s uncle who died with no legitimate heirs) to travel with him on his ship. In Dorothy’s story, he provides a temporary emotional distraction but also a recognition that she would never fit into the British elite because of her skin color and island background. Unlike Queen Charlotte in Bridgerton, the real prejudices of the era held Dorothy back from ascending completely into the highest levels of royal society. Riley’s narrative, especially, ignores what could have been and shows readers the truth. 

These rich white men who placed artificial limits on Dorothy were also the source for young Alexander Hamilton’s childhood poverty. However, his solution as featured in the opening song of Hamilton was to leave the islands to pursue his education in America. This was an option steeped in male and to an extent white privilege as women at this point in history were not allowed to attend college. In addition, American society had already enacted severe restrictions in the rights of free people of color. Hamilton also was an orphan. Dorothy’s parents and her children kept her rooted to the Caribbean. 

The road to Dorothy acquiring a thriving business and heirs was lengthy and arduous, and Riley does not sugar coat the dynamics at play in her life. Kirwan’s mother was a slave and her father owned a plantation. The more percentage of white ancestry you have in your blood, the more freedom and rights you have. In her teenage years, Dorothy’s white half-brother Nicholas rapes her and she ends up giving birth to a daughter. Dorothy is forced to run away with a trusted friend to another island and has to leave her daughter behind. This is the beginning of many sacrifices she makes in order to protect her family. 

Although many readers may object to Riley portraying incest and sexual assault, the historical research makes this clear that this was the reality for women in slave societies. Dorothy’s narration is carefully crafted to show not only the trauma of the event, but her processing the trauma. For Dorothy, healing comes in the form of survival. The objective isn’t exploitation or the male gaze, but to illuminate ignored history and the intersection of race and gender in sexual power dynamics. Dorothy has to repeatedly establish consent and trust in a world where her partners can and will refuse to agree to those terms. The debate over rape culture in historical fiction revolves around characters that are fictional facing fictionalized situations, especially in the TV adaptations of Outlander and Bridgerton. Additionally, Outlander has sidestepped any serious contemplation of exploitation dynamics in slave societies despite plots featuring 8th Century Jamaica and North Carolina.  It is difficult to apply this same critique to Riley’s novel as her intention is historical recreation and reconstruction of Kirwan’s life story. 

Riley’s explanation and contextualization of race and gender dynamics is something many viewers wanted the first season of British historical drama Sanditon to address, past the show alluding to Georgiana’s ancestry and £100,000 inheritance. In fact, Riley explains in the Author’s Note that the journey to finding Dorothy Kirwan began with figuring out who the real Miss Lambe could have been over a decade ago. For Georgiana to have that kind of wealth, she would have had to have a white male ancestor willing and able to use the law to secure her freedom. Sidney’s connection to Georgiana as her legal ward isn’t clear, representing a missed opportunity that erodes the story’s worldbuilding. Dorothy’s explanation of social rankings and her own background means it is highly likely Georgiana is the product of a relationship between a white planter and an enslaved or indentured woman. Georgiana isn’t the only example of an fictional heir from the islands around this time period. Rhoda Swartz from Vanity Fair has Black and Jewish ancestry along with thousands of pounds. Island Queen has the space and interest to completely center the story of women like Georgiana and Rhoda position from the perspective of a Black writer and historian. 

Dorothy also reveals through her life experiences that interracial relationships with unequal power dynamics were often one of the only ways enslaved Black and biracial women could gain their freedom. In stark contrast to America during the late 18th Century, interracial relationships were never officially outlawed, but it was very rare for white men to officially marry women of color. More often, these women were mistresses and concubines, and any children from these relationships legally belonged to the father. Any relationship an enslaved woman undertook carried the risk of losing her children, with her past often used as a weapon of misogynoir, or simultaneous racist and sexist discrimination.  

One plot line unites Island Queen and The Long Song: both July and Dorothy lose a daughter to their white slave holding father who wanted to raise them in England. This trauma drives July to poverty while Dorothy had to wrestle the trauma alongside her mission to to fight to secure manumission papers for her children and also to develop a source of income that cannot be controlled by the men in her life.

At one point, she engages in survival sex work, then finds work as a housekeeper. Eventually, she is able to start her own housekeeping and domestic worker agency. She was well aware that some of her employees would choose to have relations with their bosses, but she made sure that she was not seen as a brothel owner for legal reasons. This is in stark contrast to some of the characters from Harlots on Hulu where brothel ownership or their sex worker status was an open secret.This is another area where Black women would suffer worse consequences for perceived immorality in society compared to white women. In fact, rumors of sex work follow her  Dorothy doesn’t intefere if her housekeepers decide to engage in sex work but she insists on mutual consent.  Riley does not apply any modern notions of slut-shaming or anti-sex-worker rhetoric. The reader understands that options for women’s employment outside of domestic service in these island colonies were severely limited. 

Dorothy’s narrative exposes both vulnerability in her relationships with her children and her significant others and also in her resolve to maintain her status. Far too often, Black women in historical fiction are reduced to tropes such as the “strong Black woman” that are not realistic to historical or modern readers. Or even worse, authors who completely erase the presence of Black women in the late Georgian and Regency Era by only featuring white women. 

The challenge in reading Island Queen for those uninitiated in Caribbean history of this era is to separate our modern historical knowledge from the reality Dorothy faces. Although Riley’s narrative does not make excuses for her questionable decisions, the narration makes clear that Dortothy is navigating a racist, sexist and classist society. Part of Dorothy’s later wealth comes from owning slaves. This was not a decision based on wanting to inflict cruelty, but due to the power dynamics in colonial society which punished those who refused to participate in the slave trade. Dorothy opposes slavery but also realize that open rebellion will cost her life or the lives of those around her. She is not isolated from the violence of slave rebellions and of the consequences of suppression. Riley in the Author’s Note says Kirwan freed all of her slaves in 1833 when slavery in Demerara was officially outlawed.

Dorothy’s narrative may have the background makings of a tragedy, but Riley reveals that her life was ultimately a success. Kirwan built her business and eventually reunited most members of her family. She even saw her children marry successfully and met several of her grandchildren. None of her children lived in poverty and she prevented all of them from working as slaves. While some may wish her various relationships could have created a permanent happy ever after, the real satisfaction comes from seeing Kirwan preserve her legacy for the next generation. Real Black historical stories such as Kirwan’s are incredibly rare in US and UK media as wholly fictional composite characters dominate existing period dramas and historical fiction novels. Island Queen, if enough people read it, could become a TV or movie adaptation that would give viewers the real truths of late 18th Century/Regency Era Caribbean history. The genre is overdue for a biography adaptation led by Black writers without the white gaze.

Hollywood and Broadway need to realize that you can tell the stories of people of color without whitewashing or blackwashing them. Real life, if not yet reel life, is already kaleidoscopically diverse.

Of course, this assumes these agents of cultural production want to tell these stories. Their answer, however, seems to be that as artists it is not their mission to tell the stories of people of color but to tell universal, human ones. This implies that the stories of people of color are not, or as British author Nikesh Shula has observed, “White people think that people of color only have ethnic experiences and not universal experiences.” Evidently so do some people of color.

The colorism controversy surrounding the lack of Afro Latinx representation in the Hollywood version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights is recent but not new. As Ishmael Reed pointed out in his 2019 critique of Miranda’s Hamilton, in addition to glorifying its titular slaveholding hero and the Founding Fathers as a whole, it fails to present the voices of the “Native Americans, slaves, and white indentured servants” they victimized, voices Reed himself would subsequently include in his play “The Haunting of Lin-Manuel Miranda.”

In response to such criticism, Miranda generously conceded his limitations, while still defending his melanated whitewash of American history: “All the criticisms are valid,” he tweeted, adding, “The sheer tonnage of complexities & failings of these people [the Founding Fathers] I couldn’t get. Or wrestled with but cut. I took 6 years and fit as much as I could in a 2.5 hour musical.” The implication: the oppressive weight of these complex individuals somehow justifies jettisoning acknowledgement of the reality of their failing as slaveholding white supremacists.

In an interview with Reuters, Miranda once again invokes “tonnage” to defend his film: “To be quaint would be a dream come true. No one movie can encompass the sheer tonnage of stories we have to offer.” But “tonnage” vision may not be the only reason for the film’s failure to see Afro Latinx people. (Ironically, the Reuters interview begins with the observation that Miranda is “hoping [his] musical In the Heights changes the conversation in Hollywood about the wider appeal of such movies, just as Crazy Rich Asians did in 2018.”)

Jon M. Chu, the film’s director, provides another, noting that while the casting of Afro Latinx people was “discussed,” “in the end, when we were looking at the cast, we tried to get people who were the best for those roles.”

The sentiment is echoed by Melissa Barrera, one of the film’s white passing Latina: “I think it’s important to note though that in the audition process, which was a long audition process, there were a lot of Afro Latinos there, a lot of darker-skinned people. I think they were looking for just the right people for the roles, for the person that embodied each character in the fullest extent.”

Certainly, Miranda and Chu were aware that the film’s casting did not accurately reflect the racial demographics of Washington Heights, any more than the cast of Hamilton reflects the racial composition of the Founding Fathers. (Read another way, the dark-skinned Afro Latinx Dominican community of the Heights were the wrong people to be represented in a film about their own community.) But Hamilton’s oxymoronic, color-conscious colorblind casting is intentional. A similar intentionality cannot be read into In the Heights, and not just the movie version. (One wonders how the original Broadway musical addressed these issues during its 2008-2011 run: Were dark-skinned Afro Latinx people represented any better? Sadly, it seems colorism plagued these productions as well.

This is unfortunate, since just as Hamilton whitewashed the emotional, financial, and intellectual investment of the founding fathers in slavery and genocide, the film adaptation of In the Heights opts to omit the reality of colorism within communities of color, an issue that was suggested, albeit fleetingly, in the original Broadway production in which the father of Nina, a light-skinned Afro Latina, disapproves of her black, non-Latinx lover Benny. (Not only is this subplot excised from the film, but the romance between the two characters has also been truncated and Benny’s overall role in the film reduced.). In fact, Miranda decided to remove this suggestion of racism from the film, telling the LA Times, The film “isn’t about the parental disapproval of this interracial relationship because we wanted to focus on the specifics of the racial microaggressions Nina faced at Stanford, which Benny very much understands and has her back on. So it didn’t make sense for her to be fighting that war on two fronts.” What Miranda fails to appreciate is that battles against racism and its handmaiden colorism are swaged simultaneously on multiple fronts and that his own film’s conscious attempt to minimize these conflicts may itself be interpreted as a not so micro microaggression.

What makes the current conversation about colorism even more remarkable, is that we’ve had it before. This is not the first time Chu has been criticized for colorism. In 2018, when the Singapore-based Crazy Rich Asians was released, it was criticized there for not accurately portraying that nation’s diversity. The film’s leads are light-skinned East Asians, those in subservient roles are dark-skinned Southeast Asians. As Singapore journalist Kirsten Han, put it, “The focus is specifically on characters and faces of East Asian descent, which plays into issues of racism and colorism that still exist, not only in the U.S. but Asia.”

Responding to his critics, Chu told a press conference, “We decided very early on that this is not the movie to solve all representation issues. This is a very specific world, very specific characters. This is not going to solve everything.” Now, three years later, Chu has directed another film about a specific world and specific characters that excludes specifically dark-skinned people, creating more problems than those it was not intended to solve.

Still, Hollywood has had plenty of opportunities to clean up its act, only to squander them[3] as it deliberately continues to erase people of color from their own lived narratives. The film 21 (2008), based on a true story about a group of MIT students gaming the tables in Vegas, replaces Jeffrey Ma, a Chinese American, with a white character renamed Ben Campbell, while the rest of the real Asian American members of the blackjack team are similarly  whitewashed. In an interview with The Tech, Ben Mezrich, author of Bringing Down the House, the book on which the film is based, said that he had been told by a studio executive  involved in the casting that “most of the film’s actors would be white, with perhaps an Asian female.” In Stuck (2007), based on another real life incident, this one involving a black woman who accidently hits and kills a homeless man with her car, not only does the main character undergo a name and race change, but, adding insult to injury, the film’s race-switched white female lead sports cornrows.

Fictional characters of color are also subjected to whitening. In 2010: The Year We Make Contact (1984), the sequel to2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Bob Balaban is cast as Dr. R. Chandra, the creator of the sentient supercomputer HAL 9000, quite a departure from the Dr. Chandra, a.k.a. Dr. Sivasubramnian Chandrasegaram Pillai, of Arthur C. Clarke’s original novels. In the film Wanted, based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, The Fox, a character  physically modeled on Halle Berry, is played by Angelina Jolie. Reuben St. Clair, the black social studies teacher featured in the novel Pay it Forward (2005), in the film becomes white Eugene Simonet (Kevin Spacey). Presumably, in the eyes of the filmmakers all these actors were “the best fit for the role,” even  where the race and the names of the characters they portray were changed to accommodate them. If the shoe fits – alter it.

Movies, television and Broadway shows are entertainments not history (though they can be both). To be sure, actors should be given leeway to practice their craft, and escapist histories can provide a means of critically reexamining contemporary constructions of race and being (see for example, Barry Jenkins’ The Underground Railroad). But such imaginative excursions devolve into extravagant indulgence when they substitute for or impede the production of stories that attempt to engage history, particularly history that has been erased by what Reed calls the “Historical Establishment.”

Sure, in the eyes of producers, a film about Anne Boleyn will capture a greater audience share than one about Sojourner Truth. A film about Boleyn starring a black woman could potentially outperform them both, if only because of the controversy it will generate. After all, Boleyn is a known quantity, a brand, a bankable historical commodity. Truth is not, at least to the gatekeepers of popular historical dramaturgy. As history, Gone with the Wind (1939) is irredeemable trash. Yet, for many, both in America and abroad, it offers, like its predecessor The Birth of a Nation (1915), a distorted vision of past American greatness.[3] As for Hamilton, aside from the entertaining irony of turning the melanophobic Founding Fathers into people of color, it tells us nothing meaningful about either but a lot about the marketability of sanitized history, just as In the Heights’s erasure of an entire darkly pigmentated community of color from its own storytells us all too much about our present.

Julie Plec and her team really romanticized and sanitized the South. Never mentioning slavery until The Originals for a gross white savior arc. Referring to Bonnie's ancestor Emily as Katherine's ~handmaiden~, all the historical reenactments the town celebrates. Bonnie deserved to watch the town burn for that alone. I think it was mentioned though that the cellar Tyler used to transform was an old slave holding dungeon? I can't remember but yeah, whitewashed Virginia and Louisiana

Plec and Co. should not have been allowed to write for anything related to the South. The Vampire Diaries you could possibly excuse to an extent, because a lot of "small town America" that we see is a bunch of old-fashioned white people that are too full of themselves. But like I said, even that's just to an extent. The way they treated Bonnie and Tyler literally throughout the entire run of the show. Or any characters of color, really.

I mean, we have Bonnie basically acting as a servant to Elena and Friends, only actually having power of any kind when its beneficial to them. We have Bonnie's cousin and ancestor (Lucy and Emily) on some kind of indentured servitude/slavery with Katherine because she saved their lives (from circumstances she no doubt caused). And neither one of them were slouches in the magic department, meaning they could have easily handled her and went about their lives, but didn't because the narrative needed them to be subservient to Katherine (of Klaus or Elijah when it comes to the Martins).

And we're not even going to touch on the whole situation around Tyler in the slave cellar being bound by chains, because that's a whole different can of worms.

But when it comes to The Originals, that's a whole different story. This city, historically known for its black culture, whitewashed to served the narrative of the Mikaelsons as the white saviors who rescued those backwoods idiots from their savagery (oh, the irony). Aside from the horribly racist narrative where the few black characters were always second fiddle to all the white characters, one of the things that just bugged the hell out of me was the fact that there wasn't a single southern accent. Anywhere! It's such a trivial thing, but really highlights how much they didn't care about the city itself aside from how they could twist it to benefit their white faves.

I mean.... Julie Plec, Kevin Williamson, Michael Narducci, Caroline Dries, Carina MacKenzie... these were the primary writers for both of those shows that take place in the south. All white people who thought they were completely justified in how they treated their black characters. And I say black characters, because I'm searching my head and I can't think of a single instance of their being a Latinx character on either show (aside from Tyler). But, given what I've been seeing on Roswell, New Mexico under Carina's direction, I'm not too upset over that.

Bottom line is if your going to have a story set in New Orleans, at the very least they should have hired some writers actually from the city, someone who could help weave the culture of that city into the story. Instead we got the usual white nonsense (and I say this as a white person) of people thinking they could get away with it by having one black character for every three white characters and occassionally throwing out the word Voodoo.

American Horror Story: Coven did a better job of conveying that city and its history, and that season was racist as hell.

The greatest secret that is being kept in the world today is who the real children of God are. An important fact is that there is a real agenda aimed at Black Americans who are the only ones that are being targeted through the Western World’s Eugenics program. So, I kinda wrote a 5 paragraph essay detailing how my ex-best friend from middle school is a racist...I wrote over A THOUSAND WORDS because she pissed me off. FOR A FACEBOOK COMMENT! WHAT THE FU

A, I would like to apologize. You are correct. You are not racist. Let me count the ways.

You say you are not racist, as Donald Trump is not racist. A man who was sued by the Nixon administration (who created the War on Drugs by planting drugs on an innocent black child) for not renting rooms to black people in 1973. And yet, this is not deemed racist. A man who removed a black man from his "prestigious" television show for being "over-educated" in 2004. And yet, this is not deemed racist. A man who described literal Nazis with literal Swastika flags "very fine people" in 2018. And yet, this is not deemed racist. A man who encouraged police brutality upon a church lawn for a photo shoot, followed days after by organizing a rally in the city of the most famous bombing upon black communities and hired security to forcibly remove a black woman with tickets to his rally because black people did not belong in 2020. And yet. This man is not racist. And you are not racist.

You say you are not racist, as the Confederate soldiers were not racist. You defend a battle flag of American traitors and slave owners. And yet, they are not racist. These people bought slaves from Africa and called them all n*****s because they are probably from Nigeria and heritage is only for the white society. And yet, this is not racist. They forced people to work without pay or freedom. And yet, this is not racist. When the purchase of people was no longer deemed profitable, new slaves were created by the rape of black slaves, frequently the white male owner and one of the slave women. And yet, this is not racist. When the number of people in a given area increased profits, slaves were allowed to be counted as only part of a whole person as they were not viewed as full people. And yet, this is not racist. When some of the American states believed it morally unethical to own people, the Confederate States were formed with the inclusion in their constitution that "No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed." And yet, this is not racist. When President Abraham Lincoln declared the end of slavery, Confederate slave owners moved slaves to Texas "until the war was over." And yet, this is not racist. When the Confederate States lost the war, many slaves were not freed until Union soldiers arrived months later to announce their freedom and were expected to spread the word from there. And yet. The Confederate States were not racist. Owning slaves and making a new country for the sole purpose of owning slaves was not racist. And therefore, you are not racist.

You say you are not racist, as your actions can say just as loudly as your words. When friends and coworkers speak to you about how your words may be perceived as offensive, you laugh and ignore them. And yet, this is not racist. When friends and coworkers seek to educate you on the realities of the day, you do not believe them and block them from your life. And yet, this is not racist. When scrolling through Facebook and seeing a distressing article about children of different ages and skin tone, you add the tag of #thereismoreblackonwhitehatethanwhiteonblack as if white people are truly oppressed by angry children bearing the weight of their entire races. And yet, this is not racist. When black men enter your life, they are rapists and sexual harassers when you are the first to make the advances. And yet, this is not racist. When the words "black lives matter" appear, you find it insulting and must rectify this with the knowledge that all lives matter, effectively whitewashing the problem into oblivion until you needn't acknowledge others' pain. And yet, this is not racist. When you told a joke about a cousin of yours who mistook a small black baby for a "monkey" and laughed and repeated the joke as it was so amusing in the innocence of your infant cousin speaking racist words, accident or no. And yet, this is not racist. When the matter of the Confederate flag and its short yet deadly history appears, your opinion matters more than the black ethnicity that suffered under it. And yet, this is not racist. When another American is murdered at the hands of police officers, you find it necessary to spread information upon this person's past deeds and showing how this person deserved to die in the streets. And yet, this is not racist. When people speak up about your treatment of others, past and present, you shut them down. And yet, this is not racist.

You are a child playing at debate without considering the other side. And the other side has considered yours and deemed it racist and evil. On three separate occasions within 200 years. As the video states, the Confederate flag is tarnished with the truth and black people must be heard more about things that pertain to them. Yet, I know you are not racist. That flag means a lot to you, and it should be respected, not hung in a tree to be picked at by black crows who desire vengeance rather than equality. Although, when people attempt to have adult conversations with you, you shut them out if they do not agree without good arguments to back it up. I have removed people from my life for spreading hatred and racist ideals. Why do you remove people? For disagreeing? For being rude? But you do end your messages with such kind language. That you love people regardless of their opinions when your opinion about a flag is one of murder, death, and rape. That you desire adult conversation and yet remove those who attempt to speak to you. That you wish people happiness when you actively choose anger and hatred to prevail because in your opinion, those views are not yours and yours alone, and therefore are invalid. For you are not racist. In fact, you are the least racist person I have ever met. Well, second least racist. My fascist neighbor is a little less racist.

Is a color-blind political system possible under our Constitution? If it is, the Supreme Court’s evisceration of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 did little to help matters. While black people in America today are not experiencing 1950s levels of voter suppression, efforts to keep them and other citizens from participating in elections began within 24 hours of the Shelby County v. Holder ruling and have only increased since then.

In Shelby County’s oral argument, Justice Antonin Scalia cautioned, “Whenever a society adopts racial entitlements, it is very difficult to get them out through the normal political processes.” Ironically enough, there is some truth to an otherwise frighteningly numb claim. American elections have an acute history of racial entitlements—only they don’t privilege black Americans.

For centuries, white votes have gotten undue weight, as a result of innovations such as poll taxes and voter-ID laws and outright violence to discourage racial minorities from voting. (The point was obvious to anyone paying attention: As William F. Buckley argued in his essay “Why the South Must Prevail,” white Americans are “entitled to take such measures as are necessary to prevail, politically and culturally,” anywhere they are outnumbered because they are part of “the advanced race.”) But America’s institutions boosted white political power in less obvious ways, too, and the nation’s oldest structural racial entitlement program is one of its most consequential: the Electoral College.

Commentators today tend to downplay the extent to which race and slavery contributed to the Framers’ creation of the Electoral College, in effect whitewashing history: Of the considerations that factored into the Framers’ calculus, race and slavery were perhaps the foremost.

Of course, the Framers had a number of other reasons to engineer the Electoral College. Fearful that the president might fall victim to a host of civic vices—that he could become susceptible to corruption or cronyism, sow disunity, or exercise overreach—the men sought to constrain executive power consistent with constitutional principles such as federalism and checks and balances. The delegates to the Philadelphia convention had scant conception of the American presidency—the duties, powers, and limits of the office. But they did have a handful of ideas about the method for selecting the chief executive. When the idea of a popular vote was raised, they griped openly that it could result in too much democracy. With few objections, they quickly dispensed with the notion that the people might choose their leader.

But delegates from the slaveholding South had another rationale for opposing the direct election method, and they had no qualms about articulating it: Doing so would be to their disadvantage. Even James Madison, who professed a theoretical commitment to popular democracy, succumbed to the realities of the situation. The future president acknowledged that “the people at large was in his opinion the fittest” to select the chief executive. And yet, in the same breath, he captured the sentiment of the South in the most “diplomatic” terms:

There was one difficulty however of a serious nature attending an immediate choice by the people. The right of suffrage was much more diffusive in the Northern than the Southern States; and the latter could have no influence in the election on the score of the Negroes. The substitution of electors obviated this difficulty and seemed on the whole to be liable to fewest objections.

Behind Madison’s statement were the stark facts: The populations in the North and South were approximately equal, but roughly one-third of those living in the South were held in bondage. Because of its considerable, nonvoting slave population, that region would have less clout under a popular-vote system. The ultimate solution was an indirect method of choosing the president, one that could leverage the three-fifths compromise, the Faustian bargain they’d already made to determine how congressional seats would be apportioned. With about 93 percent of the country’s slaves toiling in just five southern states, that region was the undoubted beneficiary of the compromise, increasing the size of the South’s congressional delegation by 42 percent. When the time came to agree on a system for choosing the president, it was all too easy for the delegates to resort to the three-fifths compromise as the foundation. The peculiar system that emerged was the Electoral College.

Right from the get-go, the Electoral College has produced no shortage of lessons about the impact of racial entitlement in selecting the president. History buffs and Hamilton fans are aware that in its first major failure, the Electoral College produced a tie between Thomas Jefferson and his putative running mate, Aaron Burr. What’s less known about the election of 1800 is the way the Electoral College succeeded, which is to say that it operated as one might have expected, based on its embrace of the three-fifths compromise. The South’s baked-in advantages—the bonus electoral votes it received for maintaining slaves, all while not allowing those slaves to vote—made the difference in the election outcome. It gave the slaveholder Jefferson an edge over his opponent, the incumbent president and abolitionist John Adams. To quote Yale Law’s Akhil Reed Amar, the third president “metaphorically rode into the executive mansion on the backs of slaves.” That election continued an almost uninterrupted trend of southern slaveholders and their doughfaced sympathizers winning the White House that lasted until Abraham Lincoln’s victory in 1860.

In 1803, the Twelfth Amendment modified the Electoral College to prevent another Jefferson-Burr–type debacle. Six decades later, the Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery, thus ridding the South of its windfall electors. Nevertheless, the shoddy system continued to cleave the American democratic ideal along racial lines. In the 1876 presidential election, the Democrat Samuel Tilden won the popular vote, but some electoral votes were in dispute, including those in—wait for it—Florida. An ad hoc commission of lawmakers and Supreme Court justices was empaneled to resolve the matter. Ultimately, they awarded the contested electoral votes to Republican Rutherford B. Hayes, who had lost the popular vote. As a part of the agreement, known as the Compromise of 1877, the federal government removed the troops that were stationed in the South after the Civil War to maintain order and protect black voters.

The deal at once marked the end of the brief Reconstruction era, the redemption of the old South, and the birth of the Jim Crow regime. Three-quarters of Americans live in states where most of the major parties’ presidential candidates do not campaign.

More important, this “voters will be ignored” rationale is morally indefensible. Awarding a numerical few voting “enhancements” to decide for the many amounts to a tyranny of the minority. Under any other circumstances, we would call an electoral system that weights some votes more than others a farce—which the Supreme Court, more or less, did in a series of landmark cases. Can you imagine a world in which the votes of black people were weighted more heavily because presidential candidates would otherwise ignore them, or, for that matter, any other reason? Critics of the Electoral College are right to denounce it for handing victory to the loser of the popular vote twice in the past two decades. The greatest mistake of Hebrews in America ever committed was to listen to evil women who were sellouts like Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, and Cynthia Mckinney who pushed for integration and for Negro women to be leaders when the Black men were supposed to be the leaders of the Black race. Integration, mixing with Gentiles, and Feminism are an abomination according to the Bible. I highly recommend watching the historic documentary films: “Hebrew or the so called Negro” and “Hebrews to Negroes”. The truth that Negroes are the real Jews, and the Awakening of God's Chosen people is spreading all over the world! If you are a Hebrew, I sincerely hope that you take part in this glorious Hebrew Israelite movement. Repent from your sins and return to The Most High -God of the Israelites, so that The Lord our Messiah (whose name in the Hebrew language is “YASHAYAH”) can return and put these evil Gentiles who are our enemies into subjection and return AHAYAH’s Chosen Remnant to their former glory as the true NATION OF ISRAEL (Book of Revelation Chapter 7)!
