Leverage Redemption Log: The Museum Makeover Job
And we're in London. Museum break-in goes south, Inspector Ponytail is on the case. Mirabelle and Liam call Parker (is Liams Brother driving?) Man's phone goes off, Inspector Ponytail is with Interpol (presumeably going to be Sophie's personal Sterling, and knowing about the whole "she has a daughter"-reveal. Her daughter). Name is Astrid, Oh god that is one ugly-ass painting of Sophie, the duke and little Astrid. (i mean Sophie looks relatively fine but the duke's face is just... well it makes you hope it was a closed casket funeral.) --- Parker is being thoughtfull in the most Parker way imaginable. Turns out Harry is trying to retire again, (it wont stick but its good for him to keep his skills sharp and his position as a legitimate lawyer is crucial. You can fake a website but you cant fake legitimate connections) --- Its not the masks. Sure they might be valuable but they scream distraction (cause obligatory third act twist). Its probably the Indian Jewel Exhibit that has yet to open. So, not Sophie's Sterling, Astrid is Parkers Sterling. Sophie puts it out in the open, They realise its a trap (but not that the masks are a diversion) Parker tries to bait Astrid but it turns out Astrid isnt biting (personal vendetta against Ramsey, one of the people who made her dad drink himself to an early death, trumps the worlds greatest thief) Sophie's little look at her hand and double-speak "im proud of you even if I cant say it" moment. --- Billy tells Sophie her plan is shit. (for one, it assumes that he doesnt want her to open a path for her)
Oh yeah this place survived the blitz and we're still occasionaly finding those arent we.
Breanna, dont be a dick to Elliot. "bomb protective" tarps over some paintings and a new lick of paint on the walls and bada-bing-bada-boom we have a different floor for Ramsey. Ramsey doesnt buy it (because he organised this to get Leverage involved so he knows Sophie is going to try to go after him) --- Confrontation between Sophie and Ramsey, the moment she says she's after the masks he lights up (cause he's not after the masks and it tells him she's not seeing through his real goals yet)
Hardisons 3d printer makes a return, (yet another good way to keep the character "present" when the actor cant be there. They're really lucky it was the Guy in the Chair and not Elliot whose career blew up)
Flashback Parker steals the masks (and the hugging Oscar statue) Small chasescene, Fake Fake Deathmask reveal and a phonecall from Arthur. (didnt see him coming tbh. Thought this was Ramsey playing a double-bluff) So Arthur's plan was simple: Get Sophie to shut down the museum and clear the place, knowing that they'll be so focussed on the Death masks that he can simply walk right up to the crown and take it.

Questions I am left with after binging the latest Redemption episodes:
*Parker joins in a beer toast with a flashlight(?) in her hand*
Have we ever seen Parker drink alcohol on screen? Does she not drink? Did she not drink when she worked in Hardison’s Portland microbrewery brainstorming ideas for “thief juice” or is that new? Do we think she’s back on psychiatric meds now that she has a long term therapist? Her current affect is a lot more like it was when she was on meds in The Twelve-Step Job, but that could just be stability, the therapy and working on herself.
*Breanna pats a guy on the chest and calls him cute*
Does she mean that in an “aww he’s adorable” way or is she canonically bi? I implied she’s bi in my s1 fic but we’ve only seen her date women. I personally am going to take that as evidence that she’s bi but I’m honestly not sure which way they’re going with this.

the issue at the core of the museum makeover job is not the cheesy, nonsensical, and easily sidestepped "con." we have had dumb af cons before, esp in redemption. nah, the issue is that there wasn't any true victim of capitalism here? like. one of the most important and endearing parts of leverage is (as was named in the og's opening monologue) that its the rich and powerful who are the targets here, and WE steal it back for YOU. you, the not rich and the not powerful. but... the victims of the museum makeover job? it's just fucking rich people who have so much money that they out here buying fakes, likely for tax evasion and money laundering purposes anyhow because thats how the art world works now. rich people, and then also who? ...ramsey? ...the grifters who would have their reputation ruined if forgeries from three decades ago were found out, because apparently they are dumb as fuck enough not to change up their tactic for financial and credential subterfuge in all that time. or is it sophie and those around her (so, leverage: new orleans)?
there have been times when the target was leverage itself, but usually there is some underlying narrative that still unveils some aspect of corruption in the world. the only one that i feel truly breaks the mold is the radio job, but that was part of an overall season about leverage being targeted for revenge and power by characters with very clear motives. in some ways, the vic is leverage, its method of helping people, and its intrigrity. also, the plans they steal help set up the con in the next episode that is legit: the monopoly over water rights. and the heist aspect of it was so carefully done, with a clear nostalgia bomb for die hard, that there wasn't a typical vic is excusable.
that subtlety is not what's going on here in the museum makeover job. this all feels so personal in a way that ignores the deep seeded vindication of attacking capitalism that is (again) the core of what makes/made leverage good. and if you are going personal, you gotta banter out with a bang-up heist... which i know would be hard for the current writing room because that is a weak point for them...

Eliot can draw? Eliot drew Parker? Eliot drew himself taking revenge on Parker?
And he can tell Parker has focused in on the Mask of Agamemnon without even being able to see her?
Also after a week of watching The Librarians, seeing Eliot in a museum automatically makes him Jake Stone for a moment (although funnily enough, Harry stayed Harry)

Just caught up with that ridiculous cliffhanger.
I don't like this season, it's official.
Apparent the big bad of this season is just Sophie's past ? And like. Eliot's past is full of trauma and interesting. Parker's past shines a lot of light on how she became who she is now. Sophie's past ? It's just a mess best left in the past. Why did they wait all those years to come back to bite her in the ass, just convenient when they were in need for plot ? I don't like it.
All their stunts are more about ridiculous and comedy than it's about being impressive and smart. Even the flashbacks to show off what they did, they are no longer a whole other plan waiting to unravel, just convenient stuff to put into loopholes.
And Sophie's mess is just an excuse to pull Harry out of his own redemption path, as a good lawyer who helps people with what he knows best. He's a mediocre grifter at best and even if the Leverage team is more efficient and fast than what he does, what he does is important, and works at his redemption in a way healthier way. Itns fully him, it's what he chooses to do to make things better, it's not him being forcibly roped in something else.
Sophie is still a mess from Nate's death which is not a very healthy sign for what their relationship was. In the last season of Leverage, they had a very healthy balance and relationship despite being messes both. It was actually fucking great. Her not being able to move on says that relationship wasn't fulfilling to her and it was just a cane so she stays upright. Considering all the years she pursued Nate when he made it very clear he wasn't ready for it goes in that sense too, to be fair...
But now she's completely emotionally dependent on Harry in a way that is frankly toxic. I like him but he seems like a peculiar choice for that role. When there is the trio that has known her for years and is ready to help her. Instead she keeps secrets from them and put the weight of keeping her in check on Harry.
Again. Harry seems pretty balanced and stable emotionally and he's doing a great job of it. But he's processing through his own shit and he never really agreed to be her crutch.
I just don't like this season...
I hope I'm not gonna be the black sheep for it...

"- How many plans do we have? Is there like a Plan M?
- Yeah. Hardison dies in Plan M."
I love how the smallest, seemingly throwaway lines become recurring elements of the show, like how Plan M was mentioned early on in the pilot first, but it was still a thing in the latest LevRed episode, something even Harry was familiar with. just... the thought and love that went and still goes into this show!

New chapter, and we’re back to Parker’s perspective!
Eliot shoots him a glare and says, “Stop being a dad at me, it's not good.”
“It's… got potential,” Harry corrects, shrugging.

Arthur Wilde: "I can just picture Eliot right now, thinking of all the ways he can quietly take me out"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene shouldn't have hit me the way it did, but the whole season Eliot has been extremely protective of Sophie, and this one just came for my heart. The look on his face, his voice, how he just states the sentence matter of factly, and Sophie's hands on his chest to calm him down, her nod of acknolegment. UGH. I love everything about this. (Also Christian Kane is absolutely gorgeous here. seriously)
