I just got to the whole Fogbound Lake part of the story where Team Skull is about to gang up on you and your partner and like. Idk if this is a common headcanon or just smth I’ve personally believed for years but. When Wigglytuff comes charging out of the woods chasing his Perfect Apple at the EXACT moment Team Skull was about to attack you…that cannot be a coincidence. I bet you he was probably standing by the entire time, probably even before Team Skull came out of hiding, watching his apprentices solve the mystery of the Groudon Statue…and then when Team Skull revealed what absolute assholes they were, and even hinted at what took place in Apple Woods…he was probably like oh NO they don’t. Not MY apprentices. Not MY guild. So he chose to come running in at that exact moment. And played the oblivious buffoon card right up until the very end, and promptly served Team Skull’s asses to them on a platter.
I mean we get lots of little hints within the game (especially his special episode) that Wigglytuff is way smarter and way more resourceful than he lets on. I just love the idea of him jumping in to protect his apprentices and thrashing Team Skull to hell for not only being bullies but also for lying to the guild? And playing Chatot for a fool? NOT gonna stand. Nothing but respect for MY Guildmaster

'Repeatable Offense'
While trying to warn Azelf of the incoming disaster that looms above the time gear he guards, Team Venture comes across Grovyle; and he has some new tricks up his arsenal that he plans to use to his advantage.
Based off of the ask that I sent to @sincerely-sofie and the idea she presented that I had in my mind for so long.
The mission was clear, and time was running thin.
After seeing how effortlessly Grovyle knocked out the two of them after their rebuttal against Mespirit and him getting his hands on their Time Gear with ease, they both knew that it would only be a matter of time before he would inevitably make way towards the one Azelf guarded in Crystal Crossing.
Between bathed breaths and the sounds of their legs tapping against the cavern floor, the duo made haste towards Azelf's floor.
Twig kept a determined expression on her face as she pressed on forwards, not allowing herself to stop for a millisecond; even if the cries of her quadrupedal compatriot that urged her to slow down for a just one damn second rang.
She couldn't blame Kip for needing to stop for a moment; as of right now, the two were marching towards a destination with no plan or forethought invested. They just nabbed whatever it is that they had stored from Kangaskhan's, and hoped that it would serve as any viable options to ward off Grovyle in case the wretched gecko decided that he could use another Time Gear for his collection, not to mention how absolutely terrifying his presence was despite the 15-second span that the two saw him in.
It was almost instantaneous. One second, they finish calming Mespirit's rage as she accused them of jeopardizing Uxie after the Fogbound Lake expedition, and in the other he barges in, knocks the three of them without doing so much as breaking a sweat. Twig could only hope that Azelf had something to stop him or at the very least *stall* him before he nabbed the final gear and went on his merry way.
But just as they were a few floors away from Azelf's chamber, they came across a sight that shocked them to their very core. Across the whole dungeon, there was an entire system of flora bursting through the cracks of the floor, walls and ceiling, forming barriers of vines between the tiniest of edges and trapping the pokemon native to those dungeons in them.
And the worst part was how all those pokemon; who are normally protective of their own territory and how almost little to no fear even in the sight of world-class explorers.. were absolutely horrified. Scared, bruised, and clutching onto whatever it is that they have to not pass out. Absols, Bagons and whatnot, all cowering behind the makeshift prisons that were made with the scorn and fury of Mother Nature.
All of them warned the duo of the exact same thing, and one thing only.
"Beware of the one who holds the power of time."
Even with the cryptic warning telling them to turn tail and run now, it is no longer an option. Grovyle was here, and he did not bear the best of intentions.
The rest of the way to Azelf was only filled with more mazes of grass and flora, only giving Twig more determination to press on forward and filling Kip with unfathomable dread about whatever opponent the two will have to face where their presence alone can effect the ecosystem of a mystery dungeon.
Finally, they made to Azelf. The long trail of grass and flowers that stretched on for all the cavern road and the overabundance of crystals that appeared in the waters shows that Azelf did end up taking to stall Grovyle, even if for a moment. Rushing down the long road and finally making it to the big crystal threshold, they immediately noticed Azelf, who was on the ground out cold, and none other than Grovyle standing next to him with his back turned to the two.
Seeing this with her own eyes, it only motivated her to step forward and call out Grovyle.
With his attention caught, he turned to her almost immediately, his eyes narrowing at the sight of them again. He knew what they were here for, and they couldn't let him leave here all nilly-willy.
Despite his own instincts telling him to knock them out again and book it before time stops, he tried to make a last-minute effort to try and deter them. He knew it was pointless, but he figured they would already get the memo that they stood no chance.
"You two. Go back. I have no quarrel with-"
Despite his own dismissive tone, Twig refused to back down on this. Not now, and not ever.
"Like HELL we will! You think you can just take the time gears as you please and not worry about everyone suffering because of it?! We're gonna stop you, one way or another!"
Just as he suspected. If this is what they wish, then he may as well entertain their plan.
"Is that so?"
Kip slowly peeped out of his hiding spot behind Twig, talking with utter fear and sadness in his voice, hoping to find some alternative solution to this already-doomed death scenario.
"P-please, Grovyle, it DOESN'T have to be this way! J-just stop all of this and we can all go! Nobody has to get hurt!"
Grovyle contemplated his words, but not before sharpening his own leaf blades and taking on a fighting stance as he gazed at the two kids, daring them to give their best shot.
"In life, some sacrifices have to be made. Ones that you know will hurt you more than anything. I have nothing left to lose, and I will do all that it takes to finish the mission."
There was no turning back. This was it.
"Please forgive me."
The battle waged on, Twig and Kip managing to land a few lucky hits on Grovyle but heavily sustaining a few heavy bruises from him as he soon enough retreated and left the two to their devices. The battle was hard, but the victory was easy. Just as Twig was about to celebrate their success, their vision whitened in an instant as they found themselves back at the start of Azelf's road; all the while keeping the exhausting and damage from the fight before. This.. was not supposed to happen.
Rushing towards the threshold again, they saw Grovyle once more. The same scenario played out, and so did the victory with it. Only for themselves to find themselves back at the start. This felt like a nightmare beyond their comprehension. Constantly forced back to fight Grovyle, winning, only for whatever cruel string of time to say "Like hell you did."
Twig could feel herself growing more exhausted and the adrenaline from the damage caused rushing to her head, all the while having to see Kip hold on out despite looking in an even more terrible state than she did.
By what they could only assume was their sixth confrontation with Grovyle, they were holding onto every bit of strength they had. The most unfathomable part was how Grovyle barely had a scratch on him, whereas they almost collapsed from the constant barrage of hits they endured.
The Dimensional Scream was going off at full-alert, and even with it showing that the two will eventually triumph over Grovyle, it was only a difference between how longer they were willing to put up with fate's constant roundabout of putting them against him or if Grovyle chose that he had enough and dipped. Twig could sense through the temporal energy that *he* had something to do with all this, but she could barely think as to how he could even pull any of this off.
The towering crystal walls were now covered in grass that breached and cracked through their walls. Then, an idea popped in Twig's head. If she lit the walls and pushed Grovyle close but not too close, it may just stun and deter him enough to run away, putting an end to this monochromatic crystalline nightmare.
The fight started once more, and Twig acted just as quickly. While it stunned Grovyle for a moment, it also took him a moment to snap out of that trance and deliver his own power at the two; this time managing to finally knock Kip out as Twig was at his mercy. She only watched as her partner laid unconscious not too far from her, and she felt her entire life flash before her eyes. All of this was going to end, right now. She cried as she clutched onto her own injuries, praying that this will end quickly as Grovyle approached her.
From his perspective, he could finally carry on with the task at hand and finally dispose of the two nuisances, but.. something about seeing Twig like this snapped something inside him. Seeing her this vulnerable and the way her face scrunched up.. it all made sense to him. She was alive. And right now, he hurt her more than anything else. He could only shakingly reach out to her, almost as if he was trying to say "Please I am so sorry I didn't mean to do this please don't hate me for this please I beg of you."
He felt his head spin a hundred miles, the thought of him nearly killing the one person he has left broke him.
Just as he was about to pull her for a regretful hug, he was immediately met with a punch to the face, knocking him just far enough from her.
Twig looked up after hearing the sudden interference, and saw none other than Dusknoir as he worryingly stayed close to her and helping her to slowly get up before Grovyle did.
"TWIG! Thank the gods that I made it here on time! Are you okay? Can you walk? Is everything in place?!"
"Dusk..noir.. Kip.. I.."
"Yes, yes.. I saw. I know this is a lot of asking from you at the moment, but can you take him to safety while I.. take care of our weed problem?"
"I.. will manage."
With her scurrying over to Twig in pain and managing to get them out of harm's way, she watched from the sidelines as Dusknoir was facing off against Grovyle, who had pure venom and anger flowing through his eyes and veins.
The two tosseled, just out of Twig's hearing range as Grovyle began to show his.. disdain towards Dusknoir's sudden appearance.
"You.. YOU. GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF HER, YOU-"
"And let you finish her off yourself?! Over my already-dead body, Grovyle. You're not gonna lay a finger on the two of them so long as I am here!"
Dusknoir may appear brave from an outsider's perspective, but he was horrified. Grovyle managed to evoke some fear within him, one that could only rival the fear he has of Primal Dialga. It was indescribable. And it didn't help that Grovyle was overpowering him in this fight.
"DON'T PRETEND LIKE YOU EVER CARED ABOUT HER! YOU HOUNDED US FOR OUR ENTIRE LIVES, AND YOU MADE ME LOSE SOMEONE THAT I LOVED!"
"What on earth are you babbling on about?! I didn't do such thing! Not yet, at least! You've gone MAD, Grovyle! You are an active threat to all that is around you!"
"I'LL SHOW YOU 'ACTIVE THREAT', YOU SEVEN-FOOT TALL GHASTLY WASTE!"
With the harsh tone leaving his mouth, Grovyle retaliated with a Leaf Blade right towards Dusknoir's eye, stunning him and making him trip and fall to his knees. Dusknoir let out a grunt as he clutched onto it, allowing Grovyle to flee and escape; not before looking at Twig, who was watching all of this unfold, one last time. She saw the desperation and pain in his eyes, but she did not sympathize with him. She never will.
With Grovyle gone, she immediately rushed over to Dusknoir to see if he was alright, despite her looking in a more horrid condition than him by a tenfold. The attack hardly affected Dusknoir, only leaving a mean scar in its place, but seeing Twig and Kip this hurt and damaged already killed him inside as is.
"D-Dusknoir! Are you- *cough* okay?"
"You needn't worry about me, Twig.. right now, you two are my top priority. I will carry you back to Treasure Town and I will notify the guild of your condition from there."
As he carried the two back home, Twig could only wonder a few things as she held onto her own wounds. Why did Grovyle look at her remorse and regret, and how did he manage to pull off all of that time manipulation, or whatever it is that he did?
And why did she feel like she knew him before?

Hey! I have a writing idea but I need to ask a few to make it. Are there any dangerous dungeons in the area that Twig and Ark live at? What are there names? Does Opal have any fighting/training experience as she grows older (say like 9-12)? And does Opal know what dungeons are dangerous?
Tumblr media
I'm so excited to hear you have a writing idea you're eager to write!! Sorry it took me a bit to get to answering your questions. I get real antsy waiting for these kinds of refs myself, so I hope it wasn't too hard to wait ^^;
Twig and Ark's immediate area around their town is clear of any mystery dungeon formations, but there are a number of routes that lead to a lot of mystery dungeons nearby— the closest of which is Mount Travail, though Boulder Quarry, Fogbound Lake, and Aegis Cave are also fairly close.
Opal takes an early interest in fighting and starts training with Twig at about 7, though Twig greatly limits the intensity of their exercises until she's about 10 to stretches and agility-focused work. After that, Opal starts combat training, and she's a prodigy at it— even beyond what edge being a Legend should give her, the girl knows how to throw a punch and loves doing it.
Once Opal is old enough to start wandering on her own, Twig lectures her about the mystery dungeons in their area and how dangerous they can be to the point Ark has to step in and lighten up the scare tactics on her behalf. Opal knows a lot of signs that she's nearing a mystery dungeon, but might not necessarily recognize them until she's already entered one. It's easy to get distracted and not be as mindful as you should be when you're a kid, after all.

Time’s Singing (M(T)PJ: Different Futures)
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky
My (Twisted) Pokemon Journey Masterlist
This is a short thing I wrote a few years ago, and since I am close to getting to finally implement it, I figured that I’d post it. This is my Trainer OC/Player Charcater Crystal/Pearl within the PMD:EoS DS game, at Fogbound Lake and meeting Uxie. It’s not very long, but I liked the idea of the scene going this way instead.
The Time Gear’s light shone far across the lake. Uxie watched us all carefully, but aside from a quick glance at him, I only focused on the far-off Time Gear. And the lovely, soft music. I almost didn’t notice its subtle sound; I only noticed myself keeping time to the music.
“The music is beautiful,” I said quietly. “Is it from the Time Gear, Uxie?”
“You hear it?” Uxie asked, surprised. “Only the Guardians hear it.” He paused, but I never looked away from it. “You don’t know who you were before? But you were human?”
I tore my eyes from the Gear and forced myself to focus on Uxie. He seemed concerned, but not for me. “As far as we can tell. Does it mean anything? Is there a Guardian missing?”
Uxie stared at me, into me, with an arresting intensity. Finally, he shook his head and said, “I don’t know. Maybe someone else can tell you.” And because of this, I will spare your current memories, and the memories of your Guildmates, I heard in my mind. I nodded wordlessly.

Heron gives the two a friendly wave of their tail, expression curious- if the slightest bit pensive, "Hello there! You're one of the teams from the Guild, right? It's nice to meet you two!" They give the duo a wry smile, "Though, I hear you've both been through a lot together. I heard you talk about the Hidden Land and Fogbound lake, but... have any other of your adventures really stuck with you? I have a hunch you've got a lot of stories on the back-burner."
"Hi, there! It's nice to meet you, too!!" Angel smiles warmly, tail swishing.
"Hello," Kenina replies, smile more reserved, but still kind. "We have been through a lot together. You're right."
"Oh, yeah. If I tried to tell a story about EVERY adventure we've had, we'd be here forever!! But, let's see..." The Shiny Eevee thinks about it for a moment, then perks up. "Oh!! There was the time we visited the Shaymin Village and climbed Sky Peak!! That was really exciting. I mean, we've been back there plenty of times now, but that first time was really something special!!"
"Yes. An earthquake caused the path there to become inaccesible, so no one was able to reach it for quite some time," Kenina recalls. "A bunch of Exploration Teams had gathered at Spinda's Café when it was announced that it was possible to travel there again. There was all this talk of an amazing treasure, along with the mysterious Pokemon living in the village at the base of the mountain."
"So of course we had to go!!" Angel chimes in with a laugh. "Turns out the Shaymin are there to guide travelers up Sky Peak. We met a nice Shaymin named Eda that really helped us out!! She's actually a part of our team now!!"

Chapter 11
Tumblr media
You missed an Easter Egg
Wait, seriously? Shit *snags Easter egg basket and runs off*
Actually, this post is going to be a little different this time. I am placing one of the dungeons (specifically the Northern Desert replacement) into its own post. Because so much craziness happened that I can’t possibly fit it all onto here along with everything else.
So, uh. Look forward to that shortly. (And click here to see Part 2!)
Last time, on Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of What, Beedrill called us over on an urgent mandate. And urgent it was.
Tumblr media
“It would be extremely bad if a third Time Gear were to be taken” -Tropius during Chapter 10
Uh... whoops.
And the one from Fogbound Lake, no less, adding insult to injury.
Tumblr media
I wonder how true of a statement this is. Dusknoir Gulpin builds himself up as worldly and wise; he actually has the knowledge to back it up, too. Especially since he came to the past knowing Grovyle’s Togetic’s mission! It would be absurd for him not to do his research and act accordingly.
Huh. I’d never considered this before, but now it makes sense. He’s totally feigning ignorance here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teresa looks in the mirror and sees a warped reflection. She knows it is not her fault, but she still weeps, for it is her son staring back at her...
This is fun lol I’m so holding on to this headcanon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How humbling it is, to have... a giant stomach in our corner.
We get the order to stock up in Nautical Cottage, and naturally the first thing I do is run to the other Gulpin.
Tumblr media
Thank. Goodness.
Tumblr media
This was a pleasant surprise! See, the last PMD game I played was Blue Rescue Team, so my mind defaulted to “new recruits are gone if they faint.” But I forgot that’s totally not the case in Explorers! She is risen, alleluia.
Tumblr media
And here’s the moveset of my own Gulpin (So many Gulpin! Is this the Three Muskateers?). Miracle Eye doesn’t help much, but the punch moves hit pretty decently with a Power Band. Level 37 is pretty hella for this point in the game, too. So I had him tag along for the journey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*grabby hands* Gib. Me. Assignment.
Tumblr media
OK so two things here:
1) I totally didn’t take a shot for the Eastern Forest group?? Either I was distracted, or I didn’t bother because the name was unchanged. I honestly don’t remember for sure...
2) Looks like Crystal Cavern is the Questionable Causeway
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wait... a castle.. in the desert? Do you mean... we’re going to Relic Castle?!
Tumblr media
Oh we are so going to Relic Castle. Unova region, here we come!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, that kind of goes without saying, Andrea.
Oh look, here is the dungeon that utterly kicked my ass straight through Sunday (literally), go read about it here!!
...Alright, now that you’ve had several laughs at my expense, we return to the main program.
Tumblr media
*collapses into the sand* It better f*cking be!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, darn, seems like a dead end. And yet...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Teresa is terrible at communicating as usual, so that’s that for the day. We go back to the guild for an update.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Magby admonishes him here, but also... if Beedrill didn’t do this, the plot might have come to a standstill. That crystal ends up being very useful later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah, geez. Why do I feel like I’ve just been thrown into the ocean and asked to find land? Although we did happen to have a life raft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wha? No, I want to go back to the end of Nonsensical Castle. As long as we don’t have to go through that dungeon again.
Tumblr media
Yeaaah, I know, but there’s this crazy thing I totally forgot until now, aha...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andrea: *rubs flippers together* “Well that’s that, let’s go through all that again just to confirm a vague hunch you have!”
Tumblr media
“But it still seems like there’s nothing here.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
100% appropriate that you, as the “human from the future hellbent on completing a suicide mission,” keep suggesting borderline suicidal means of moving forward skddfjhfdf.

every now and again i think about mystery dungeon explorers and remember what a fucking Masterpiece of mystery storytelling it is. every red herring has a crumb of truth underneath it somewhere and it really makes the audience look back at those moments once the truth is revealed and go “AHA! that makes sense!” it answers some questions while creating more or leaving a few unanswered too.
one of my favorite examples of this is fogbound lake. your protagonist says they’ve lost their memory but they used to be a human not a pokemon, and suddenly they’re on an expedition to a legendary lake where, according to rumor, a pokemon named Uxie who can wipe the memories of others resides here. the protag gets a sense of deja vu while in this area and the obvious conclusion you come to is that the protag must’ve come here before and Uxie wiped their memories. it starts making you ask questions-- Why was the protag at Fogbound Lake? Why did Uxie wipe their memories?
but that’s not what happened. Uxie says they’ve never met a human before and they only wipe memories of the lake, not memories of an entire life. So that answers “Why did Uxie wipe their memories?” Well they didn’t! they DIDN’T and you still don’t know why they’ve lost their memories.
It answers a question you probably felt like was already answered-- “Did Uxie wipe the protags memories?” by refuting the conclusion the characters (and by proxy the audience) would’ve come to-- No, Uxie didn’t wipe their memories. It leaves the question of “Why does the protag feel like they recognize Fogbound Lake?” up in the air, and honestly you might not even think about it if you’re hit as hard by the aforementioned Uxie memories reveal as the narrative clearly intends. It brings you right back to square one with “How did the protag lose their memories?” And we might not even think about it when we first see the story because we’re so busy thinking about all these other questions, but that “Why was the protag at Fogbound Lake?” is STILL on the table, but because we can’t even be sure WHY our protag recognizes the lake we don’t even consider it! We don’t even realize that’s still a question left unanswered until it gets answered LATER by the narrative.
IT’S JUST. SO GOOD. it closes a few doors but leaves just enough open to keep you interested, while also opening a few other doors while you’re not looking so you can suddenly turn around when something in the narrative REMINDS you that that door exists and suddenly you can find your way to the exit. genuinely fucking genius storytelling it drives me crazy.
