My new pitch for The Night Island is that there shouldn’t be any vampire shenanigans at all. Instead Armand should just go full Home Alone on the burglars. While being a vampire.

Random thought but: Night Island is in the Bermuda Triangle, and Armand is definitely responsible for at least some of the random disappearances ascribed to it. (Undoubtedly the rest of the Coven contributed to this after '85 as well.)

Re-reading ‘The Devil’s Minion’ in 2022 is like walking into a living in joke, where every line and half cocked observation is now part of an in joke that can be turned into fiction or art (or both) at any time.

Tell you what I did not imagine at 17 y/o: Me at almost 40, still doom scrolling through whatever media I can find on Daniel and Armand. It certainly wasn't something modeled to me by my parents.

(but doom scrolling wasn't a thing yet in 2000 nvm...)

Also what I did not imagine at 17 y/o: Neurodiversity. Which does not go away. And neither does hyper focus. What a time to be alive 🥰

I'm not sure what I think about the Night Island mini series that was just announced.

Actually, I am. I think it's a cash grab. Not everything has to be a Cinematic Universe.

But it does make me remember those times fondly. I think , in some ways, the Night Island was our first attempt at a Court, a place where we could gather but come and go as we pleased, where we could share our knowledge and experience without being forced to subscribe to any belief system like a coven system did. We enjoyed it, the 13 or so of us who lived there until we couldn't any more, we enjoyed the company of others of our kind, and the wonderful feeling of living in a place where everything was designed to cater to your needs and schedule.

I don't know why it didn't work, why it ended when the court continues to go strong. Perhaps we just weren't ready. Perhaps the trauma of the Queen was too fresh in our minds. Perhaps our structure craving brains were unable to casually live together, and needed the bylaws and formality of the court and the figurehead of the Prince to knit us together.

But in some ways I think I liked it better than the court. It was a mish-mash of people, none of whom really knew how to interact with others of our kind, trying our best, not knowing how close we were permitted to come to each other, frightened and wary of each other like small feral kittens, hissing and spitting when we secretly wanted affection and closeness and community.

I'm feeling nostalgic about those days.

I’m sure the gag will be that everyone is underpaid for the shit they have to put up with, but personally I think the funniest option for The Night Island is if Armand is like. A really really good boss. Everyone makes $50 an hour because money is barely real to him. Insane, unheard of amounts of PTO, because really what is a few months to someone 500 years old? The benefits package is unreal. You don’t need health insurance because you’re a vampire? Might as well take it anyways, Armand has only the most vague understanding of what a copay is.

There’s the whole issue of his personality and literally everything else about the job, but you’re no longer worried about paying off your student loans, so…

Looking up 1980s wallpaper for reasons and I desperately want to believe there's at least one room in the Night Island Villa decked out in this:

Maybe it's a restroom on the main floor. Maybe it's a guest room. Maybe it's one of the many parlors that has a television (how many televisions do we think the Villa has anyhow??), wallpapered between wood panels. But it's in there somewhere, I am convinced.
