A tilled the back garden beds yesterday and today. dude’s a BEAST. and today he and I laid down the plastic weed guard stuff in both the cut flower bed area AND the veggie bed. that’s new. usually they use woven weedcloth in the veggies.

anyway it’s forecast to rain tonight which will both settle the soil between the rows down (nice) and turn the one end of the cut beds into a swamp (not ideal).

and tomorrow, if nothing goes awry, I’m gonna kneel in the mud for a few hours and plant some dang flowers. 🎉

"Please, anybody... Just help me."

Saying you were exhausted would have been an understatement. After reuniting with your sibling, you had been frantically searching for clues about khaenri'ah and ways to Inazuma. With no luck, you couldn't find any traces of Dainsleif or of your twin. The ruins had been sealed and you had no idea what happened to the inverted statue or the corpse you had found there. Desperately, you clung into every little information you had, you would have turned every rock on this archon damned continent if you had to, which is what led you into those ruins near Guilli plains.

Walking along the destroyed buildings your eyes caught sight of a dandelion and you froze. You missed them so much, why couldn't they go back home with you? All you ever wanted was to be by their side why, why were they running away from you?

You remembered your travels, the moments you shared together, their protectiveness over you, the fondness in their eyes when you smiled at them. You remember the times you got hurt and healed one another with your now missing powers. You remember sleeping by their side and being grateful to the universe to let you keep your ray of sunshine everywhere with you. How ironic.

What had they meant 'once you reach the end of your journey' ? What does that even mean? Stupid twin, if they knew you were here the whole time, why hadn't they come to you? Why were they always leaving just when they were within your grasp? Why? Did they know how much you missed them and how much your heart broke when you finally saw them? Did they?

You only realized you were crying when a small gust of wind had your wet cheek react to the cold, breaking your train of thought. Wind.

The wind is everywhere, you think, free as a bird, always accompanying every citizen of this world, never truly alone. With this in mind, you resumed your exploring, slower this time.

A sigh escaped your mouth. You didn't want to admit it, but the wind did comfort you a little. Almost as if he was here. God of freedom and of the breeze, he was more a singer than a protector and you couldn't bear to think about him. Was it true? What Dain said... Did he destroy this nation? Was he the cause of the scenery that still haunted your nightmares up until 500 years later? Your brain simply couldn't accept that Venti, your Venti, you catch yourself thinking, could have made such an act of wrath. He was the epitome of freedom, why would he take the very thing he based all of his existence on from mere mortals? Barbatos simply couldn't be afraid of being overpowered, he didn't even care about power. All he wanted was freedom and happiness for his people. Surley this couldn't be right?

But then again, who were you to deny the wipe out of an entire nation? The gods did it. They were afraid that Celestia would be overthrown by the pride of humankind, the destruction of khaenri'ah by divine beings was a fact. There was no misunderstanding about this. That was the one thing you were sure of. So why did you feel like crying even more now?

The mere thought of a gentle soul such as Venti committing innocent people to an eternity of suffering didn't sit right with you. Even when his dearest friend Dvalin had turned against him, he didn't try to stop him, didn't even ask the dragon to save him. He healed and helped him, gave him a choice.

'What is freedom if demanded of you by a god?' was the same person that asked this question the same one who committed mass murder? Genocide?

Did the little wine-lover bard you had grown fond of destroy all hopes and light your kin had?

You remember that night when he freed Stanley from his burden, freed his and his friends' spirits. You had marveled at his action, in that instant he was a god, and he definitely hadn't struck you as a murderer. You remember that look of silent pain and grief in his eyes when he sang the tales of the nameless bard he had taken the appearance of. You knew he trusted you enough to share his story, something so personal, you could almost feel the war that took down the tyrant of Mond. Oh how much you cherished that evening, treating him to some well deserved dandelion wine afterwards, his favorite, and asking him to sing you more about the time where was nothing but the spirit of a breeze.

Your heart broke a little, remembering his rosy cheeks and drunk smile, you wish you could talk to him, ask him what happened. What did he do, was he really as dangerous as you had been told? If so, then why did you feel so good around him? Why did you feel like you could give hi-

You stopped walking upon seeing a ruin guard up ahead in the distance. You're so stupid, you think. Feeling this way is not gonna get you anywhere, especially with how the bard had been missing for a few weeks now. Ever since you had last seen your sibling.

Where was he, where was he wandering off to? You walk towards the disabled ruin guard, not really paying any mind to it, still thinking about the god you longed to meet with. If you could see him, what would you even say? Would he even answer your questions? Why did your stomach feel so light and funny when you thought about seeing him, why aren't you angrier?

You're almost at the killing machine's level now, so lost in your thought you don't notice the five other similar robots hidden behind a wall next to it. You notice them only when it's too late and you've already turned them on while thinking about examining them and collecting their serial numbers. When you hear the familiar tick of the mechanism turning on, you internally panic and think about running away only to calm down moments later and think to yourself that you can simply beat it and take what you came here for. Even if you are emotionally and physically tired, you can manage, you think.

That was before hearing five other consecutive ticks right after it, and all around you.

Turning around, your gaze falls upon the small army of field tillers. Fuck.

Paimon wasn't with you today, you had asked for some time alone which she hesitantly accepted, so you couldn't ask her to go fetch help. You would have been worried if you had all your capacities but with the state you were in, you were wondering how you were going to survive this fight. You were alone, none of your companions with you, and deeply weakened by the busy day you had and the few hours of sleep you had managed to steal away from the night. Was it today you would meet your doom, with all your questions and uncertainties unanswered?

You tried your best to fight with the strength you had left, but quickly grew desperate after what felt like hours of efforts to swing your blade and being able to only take one monster down out of the six. It didn't help that you got injured along the way, their blows becoming harder and harder to dodge. After being thrown on the grown for the third time, you understood you had at least two broken ribs and that your shaking legs would soon fail you as well.

Fear crept upon you, you would die here today, alone. Alone. You couldn't talk to your sibling after all, couldn't understand. You didn't even get to talk to him one last time. Him... You would die without the knowledge of the truth about your bard. You would die alone. You didn't want that, you couldn't look death straight in the eye.

"Please, anybody... Just help me."

In Mondstadt, there was a musician, a weird singer everyone had heard about at least once. He lived off of his songs and was mostly known for having a great story-telling and being an alcoholic.

The number of people who knew the true nature of his identity were few and he was perfectly content with that. He didn't wish to be a god anymore, his gnosis had been taken away anyway and it's not like he had any power over the city of wind nowadays. Even if his people still worshipped him as Barbatos, it didn't sit right with him to be called a god anymore. It actually never did, he thinks to himself with a smile, he never really took any responsibilities that came with the divine title which is why he was so weak today. But it didn't matter to him, his smile turns into a soft giggle.

Sitting on a mill that was once born from his steps he looks fondly over the city he founded. Even if they were godless, the citizens were still thriving and free. He cared oh so very deeply about the place even if he rarely, if not never, showed the affection within his heart. He remembers the day he grew strong enough to dispel the storms over his actual Mondstadt, and made the weather gentle enough so that there was no need for fireplaces. Nowadays, he loves watching birds nest into the chimney tops and seeing them found their own home. It gave him a sense of belonging like no other, not above his people, but walking among them and watching them nest into this cocoon he created. He was proud of what happened to his land and would do it all over again if he had to.

Especially since it led to him meeting you. This thought doesn't catch him off guard, you often roamed around in his mind after all, and it's not like he didn't write at least three songs about you and your feat, your smile, your courage...

Ah there he goes again, rambling about you in a whisper. He turns around to the statue of him his people erected in his honor, chuckling at how they never made the connection with his signature braids. His, but not really his, since he had stolen this form from someone who was much more deserving of this power than him. Seeing his friend being honored with the statues of the seven around the land made him happy, he hoped that it was a good enough thank you gift in return for everything that the bard whom he couldn't even remember the name of anymore did for him.

Upon gazing at the statue, he remembered telling you of his long gone friend. It was the first time he had talked about him to someone else, he didn't even mention it to Venessa, she who made him believe in himself again. He could ask himself why, but he simply knew that you had something different, more than meets the eye. Perhaps it was because you weren't from Teyvat, or perhaps it was just you being as simple as your natural self but he was simply and utterly captivated by your being. You inspired him to no end, at first he thought it was because he had never met someone like you and he loved new things! But as time grew and he got to know you, he understood quickly the meaning and depth of his passions. He thought of it with a light chuckle, content with your presence alone. He really did need and want you around.

So why did he purposely avoid you like the plague?

The wind had brought to his ears that you had met with Dainsleif.

And your twin.

His first reaction was to search for you, talk to you, he wanted to be here to know what happened! You had searched so long, he couldn't contain himself, still listening to what the wind told him, he started running with excitement but... But wait, Dainsleif was... He told you what?

Oh.

So you heard about Khaenri'ah. He had stopped dead in his tracks and turned back, only sending a warm current of wind your way, hugging you from afar.

He wasn't ready to talk about this yet, not ready to face you and absolutely not ready to answer your questions. He was a coward, he thought, running away like that but what else could he do, really. It was only natural for him to be as uncatchable as air.

A sorry excuse to avoid the fact that even if his past had marvelous story like the one of the nameless bard, it also had its share of darkness, something he wasn't ready to dive back into. Especially not now when your arrival has been shaking this world up like it hasn't been since at least 500 years.

But oh, how he longed to see your face or to hear your voice. So he asked a breeze to report to him what you were up to, and where you were. Just in case! he tells himself, what if you needed help ehe? But he knows you're competent and you won't need the help of a weakling coward like him anytime soon. Or so he thought.

Because when the breeze only gives him a few words back, his blood runs cold.

"Please, anybody... Just help me."

As you murmured these words in your desperate state, not really for anyone but yourself as a last resort, a prayer of some sort, you tried to stand by leaning yourself on your sword and failing miserably. You didn't dare look up as you heard the loud footsteps of the metal giants coming your way. It was over, and you barely managed to accept it.

As you rested your forehead against the cold handle of your sword, you closed your eyes, tears starting to make their ways out of your closed eyelids. All you could feel was remorse.

A soft breeze moved your hair slightly and your chest felt like a black hole had taken place where your heart used to be, regretting to not have been able to meet him under the tree at Windrise one last time.

The breeze quickly grew stronger, until it felt unnatural and you looked up from the ground, only to close your eyes again immediately when you realized the wind was too powerful for you to keep them open. If you had struggled to see though, you would have been blinded by the white light that soon illuminated the whole ruins. You didn't have enough time to register the situation when you felt a hand being laid atop your shoulder, snaking around your collarbones and pulling you back into... nothing? Another arm circled your weak form and a voice you immediately recognized said

"I've dealt with things worse than you, now crumble."

You realized that if you couldn't feel a chest behind you while still being embraced by his arms, it was because he was floating above you, and not standing behind you. A look in his direction confirmed your suspicions but what stunned you wasn't the fact that he was flying, but the attire he wore. Barely covering his body, a white set made of materials that seemed like clouds and liquid gold contrasted perfectly with his regular green clothes. His hair was glowing green and his eyes that were focused on the ruin guards up ahead had a marvelous shine that you had never seen before. He had that same aura he did the night he freed Stanley, but there was also something different about the way his hands gripped you a little too tightly or the way his voice sounded.

"Venti.." You muttered his name, relief and affection flooding you all at once, in his presence you felt as if nothing bad could happen to you. How foolish could you be, just a few hours ago you were speculating wether or not he had wiped out an entire civilisation and now here you were, being saved by him and feeling safer than you had in months.

"Close your eyes, I don't want give you a headache" he said, slowly floating legs first towards the ground. His unusually serious voice surprised you (and him) but you did as he told you. Letting go of your sword and leaning back into him, you let him deal with the monsters ahead of you.

"It's okay, it's over now" he kneeled to be at your level, his arms still wrapped around you, and you didn't have the energy to fight your urge of nuzzling into him. "I'll always be here for you, wherever there is wind, remember I'm here too. You only need to ask."

Being protected by a god really didn't feel that bad. Especially when you were in love with said god.

BRUTE FORCE

Ah, the lovely sound of screams filled your ears once again. The blood of the people from khaenri'ah stained your clothing as you violently summoned large rock-like pieces of ice.

Your hand effortlessly swatted the people down, as if they were injured flies. The field tillers that dared to approach you and the others gods were either destroyed or taken control of; turning them on the very people who built them.

If these were your people you might've felt some mercy, but you didn't. All you felt was the adrenaline of battle. And that was all you wanted.

The battle was rather one sided. I mean, how could mere humans fight against the all mighty gods? With what? Their useless little peace making devices? Anyone in their right mind could tell the field tillers were machines built for destruction, not for the false facade of peace making.

It had only been a short amount of time since the gods had attacked the poor unsuspecting people of khaenri'ah, yet it was like it was almost already finished. Judging by the amount of people left on the surface, that is. There could've been some underground shelters if they were smart enough, but even that seemed to be a stretch at the moment.

You could see the flashes of colour, the visions of the god's glowing brightly as they hovered up high in the air; wreaking havoc amongst the people effortlessly.

The overwhelmingly beautiful flashes of aqua blue raining down on the people as the hydro archon stood above; a menacing glare displayed on their face.

The swarms of death coated the left, the pyro archon moving their hands in multiple motions, mixing the people as if they were ingredients in a bowl. It was rather gory too, their screams coated the hot air as they thrashed around for a water source or anything to cool them down. Some of them even making their way to the havoc of the hydro archon, being evaporated almost immediately once they made the idiotic mistake.

That was another nice bit of Teyvat; the elemental reactions.

And due to the people of khaenri'ah not having any visions, they had to learn about them the hard way. I mean, what god would hand over a vision to someone who refused to worship them or any other god.

The cruel laws of life in this era led to every single person seeking protection under a god. And those who didn't were killed almost immediately, that was until khaenri'ah was created. The people had a few short lived generations to live in peace, but now that was being destroyed in a mere day. Not that you or any of the other gods held any regard for them in the first place.

The right side had the dangerous vines of the dendro archon. Although dendro seemed to be a rather.. useless vision, the archon who ruled it seemed to make it as deadly as pyro or cryo in some cases. The elemental reactions were lack-luster unless combined with pyro, but somehow it still seemed threatening, well, to the people being strangled and smothered at least. Some toxic gases also littered the air as some of the plants burned with a little aid from the pyro archon.

And alas, the middle. The place it was most dangerous. The place which had cryo, anemo and geo combined. The people caught in the crossfire here definitely had a quick death. Or rather, a few of them having slow painful ones as their limbs froze and the ice spread like wildfire, with the help of anemo, of course.

To be honest, you weren't really paying much attention. Just chatting loudly as you yelled to the anemo and geo archon who you got along with quite well. Both of them doing the same in return.

Just a few swipes of your hand and the people would die. That one adeptus of Morax was quite right. Humans are just lowly beings with weak bodies and a weird way of life. Life that is so easily taken away without a second chance.

"Hey! How about we have some fun while we're at it. This is getting kinda boring" You yelled at the two archons in a whiny voice. The both of them agreeing almost instantaneously.

The anemo picked up, the clouds from the already dark sky coming down to grab the citizens of the land. A tornado formed from the wind, circling violently and throwing the people from the ground up in the air.

Next, you could hear the roar of a dragon. Or Morax, if you wanted to be exact. His body glowed with yellowish tones as he grew in size. A dragon emerging from the spot he once was. Geo structures shooting out of the sky from behind him.

Oh, this was going to be fun.

Your cryo vision shone brightly, almost a blinding white from the luminescent glow radiating off it. The ground was layered with ice in almost and instant, a few people slipping and sliding while some had their entire body or feet frozen in place; just waiting for the death that was yet to come for them.

You imbued the swirling tornado of anemo with cryo, the icy winds almost sending shivers even to you.

Just now you could feel the power of the gods, being glad you were one of them. You felt both cold and hot at the same time, the heat inside of you from your heart pumping quickly from adrenaline. The cold from the outside and you were coated in a thin layer of icy snow.

The swirls of cryo sent shivers up the spines of the people, literally.

You dropped down, slowly. Your weapon of choice appearing in your hand swiftly as you got ready to manually fight the people. For fun, of course.

Your weapon shone brightly in pale azure as your body twisted and turned; lunging at the fearful people in elegance.

You couldn't wait to get your hands dirty with the beautiful colour of death.

The media landscape has never been more fragmented. Used to be everyone would read the same book, watch the same movie, repeat the same catchphrase. Now everything’s niche. There’s no quality bar, no censor with a paternalistic hand on the tiller of Western thought. No show that everyone watches. For God’s sake, you’re reading something right now that a crank in a shed would have had to mimeograph and mail out in nondescript brown paper wrappers not too long ago.

So if you’re a unique snowflake and you consume only a very small amount of the shared Venn diagram of media that others around you know of, how do you relate to the Others? Only a fool would try to convert their coworkers onto their media diet: not only will your fellow office-drones probably not enjoy that anime where the girls are actually 17th century theories about the nature of the atom, they’ll likely resent you for making them draw their attention away from their own fast-moving fetishization.

No, what people need is a good disaster once in awhile. Huge tidal wave, people testing the structural strength of steel, a big 1980s celebrity crying in court just before being jailed for sex crimes. That’s what pulls us back together, keeps us from sinking beneath the surface of these fractal grain silos of infinitely more intense obsessions. Only through the regular application of horrific disasters can we hope to keep the semblance of a society.

I’m not sure, but I think the government figured this out before I did, and is arranging all of these disasters. No wonder they did. With the way that Hollywood production costs keep rising, and the poor defence contractors who are out of work, it is probably a better deal to bang out the occasional weather machine or insanity ray.

Effect of Sorghum Water Extract Type, Concentration and Application Time on Weed Density and Yield of Wheat

Abstract

A field experiment entitled "Effect of sorghum water extract type, concentration and application time on weed density and yield of wheat” was conducted at agronomy research Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan during winter season 2014-15. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) having three replication. A plot size of 3 m x 1.8 m (L x W) was used. Each plot was consist of six rows having 30 cm row to row distance. Different concentration (1:3) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 3 liters of water), (1:4) i. e. (1 kg plant herbage and 4 liters of water) and 1:5 (1 kg plant herbage and 5 liters of water) of sorghum stem and leaf extract were sprayed at three stages full at Feekes 1 (Emergence), full at Feekes 2 (Tillering), and half at Feekes 1 (Emergence) plus half at Feekes 2 (Tillering). The experiment was also comprised of control (no weed control), hand weeding and herbicides application. All the weed control treatments significantly affected weed density, productive tillers, non productive tillers, thousand grain weight, biological yield and grain yield. Herbicide sprayed plots produced minimum (24) number of weeds, maximum productive tillers m-2 (379), thousand grain weight (51 g) biological yield (10558 kg ha-1) and grain yield (3976 kg ha-1) as compared to control. In case of sorghum extract type leaf water extract produced minimum (131) weeds, maximum (339) productive tillers m-2, thousand grain weight (44.62 g), biological yield (9399 kg ha-1) and grain yield (3797 kg ha-1) as compared to stem water extract. Sorghum water extract at higher concentration (1:3) produced minimum (86) number of weeds, maximum number of productive tillers (350), thousand grain weight (47.17 g), biological yield (9339 kg ha-1) and grain yield (3575 kg ha-1) as compared with lower concentration (1:5).It is concluded that the use of farm grown sorghum for weed control is less costly, farmers friendly and organic method of weed control that can be explored as cheap method for increasing wheat yield in weedy fields.

Introduction

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) L. is an annual self pollinated determinate long day crop. It is hardy crop that can grow in a wide range of environmental conditions. More of the earth's surface is covered by wheat than by any other food crop. Its production is third largest cereal production in the world, after maize and rice. In terms of dietary intake, wheat comes second to rice as a main food crop. Currently, about 65 percent of the wheat crop is used for food (FAO, 2013). It is the most important cereal Hussain et al. (2010) and also major staple food of Pakistan Blackshaw [1], Aslam et al. [2]. Wheat adds a big share towards the country's GDP Aslam et al. [2].

Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. It contributes about 21 percent of our GDP. Wheat is the essential diet of population among the important crops of Pakistan. It occupies the central position in agriculture policies of the government and contributes 2.2% to GDP. Area under cultivation of wheat in Pakistan is 8693 thousand ha, production is 24231 thousand tones and the yield is 2787 kg ha-1 MINFA [3].

In Pakistan, weeds pose serious problems in crop production as weed control is ignored due to lack of education and poor financial resources of the farmers. Small farmers cannot afford the cost of weed management practices for crop production. Thus weeds growing among crop plants adversely affect yield and quality of the harvest and increase production costs, resulting in high economic losses. Some species of weed plants might be a serious threat to crop plants diversity, sharing nutrients, moisture, sun light and space Ozturk et al. [4]. Weeds compete with crop plants for nutrients, solar radiation, water, carbon dioxide and space. Apart from competition, many other factors like lodging and harvesting problem are created by weeds. In Pakistan, weeds are accountable for 30 percent grain yield losses in wheat which amounts to Rs.1150 million annually Marwat et al. [5]. Additionally, the risk of weed resistance development and high cost-benefit ratio are other disadvantages of herbicides Kordali et al. [6].

Therefore in recent years, new approaches such as plant allelopathic effects have been considered to suppress weeds in agricultural systems Dayan et al. (2009). Allelopathy is a natural, inexpensive, environmentally safe and an organic approach to control weeds and increase crop yields while conserving the ecosystem. The phenomenon of allelopathy can be practically utilized for weed control in the form of crop rotations, intercropping, allelopathic mulches, and spray of allelopathic plant water extracts Bhowmik and Inderjit [7], Jabran et al. [8], Farooq et al. [9]. Thus many plant based compounds may play a vital role as fertilizer or bio-herbicide for neighboring plants. Allelopathic characteristics of many plant species including weeds, crops and trees need to be investigated for possible use in weed management programs. Thus the newly identified allelochemicals might be helpful to formulate and commercialize new plants derived herbicides. Blackshaw et al. [1] observed that farmers are interested to explore more attractive and inclusive weed control strategies that minimize the serious weed infestation by time and in the use of low rate of synthetic herbicides with lower production costs. Allelopathic plants for example sorghum, sunflower and oats, contain a number of allelochemicals in low quality act as hormones and in high amount as herbicides. Allelopathic crop plants not only control weeds but also enhance crop growth and yield. Keeping in view the losses due to weeds, resistance creating to herbicides application and the recognized importance of allelochemicals in weed management, a present field experiment will be conducted under the agro climatic condition of Peshawar.

Materials and Methods

The nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizer were applied at the rate of 100-90 kg ha-1 respectively according to the general recommendations of wheat and source of fertilizer was urea (46% N) and diammonium phosphate (46% P2O5 and 18% N). All phosphorus fertilizer and one-third of nitrogen were applied at the time of sowing and remaining nitrogen was applied in splits [11]. Different concentration (1:3) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 3 liters of water), (1:4) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 4 liters of water) and 1:5 (1 kg plant herbage and 5 liters of water) of sorghum stem and leaf extract was sprayed at three stages full at Feekes 1 (Emergence), full at Feekes 2 (Tillering), and half at Feekes 1 (Emergence) plus half at Feekes 2 (Tillering). The experiment was also comprised of control (no weed control), hand weeding and herbicides application. All other agronomic practices were applied uniformly.

Preparation of Sorghum Herbage Water Extracts

Mature plant herbage (stem and leaf) of sorghum was collected from New Developmental Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan [12]. This herbage was used in water extracts preparation for field experiment. For making sorghum water extract, the sorghum stems and leaves were separated and sun dried for two days. After sun drying the stem and leave were chopped separately with electric fodder chopping machine. The stem and leaf material were soaked in water separately for 48 hours by maintaining (1:3) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 3 liters of water), (1:4) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 4 liters of water) and 1:5 (1 kg plant herbage and 5 liters of water) for preparation of different concentrations.

Results

Weeds density (m-2)

Statistical analysis of the data showed that sorghum extract type (SET), Concentration(C), application time (AT), control vs. treated, hand weeding (HW) vs. control and herbicide application (HA) vs. treated have significant effect on number of weeds m"2, while all possible interactions except C x AT were non-significant (Table 1). Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher concentration (1:3) resulted in less number of weeds (86 m_2). Decreasing concentration increased number of weeds and maximum number of weeds (162 m-2) at 1:5. HW plot produced significantly less number of weeds (24 m_2) as compared with SWE (134 m_2). Whereas the plot treated with SWE produced significantly less number of weeds (134 m-2) as compared with control plot (183 m-2). In case of SET the mean values showed that minimum number of weeds (131 m-2) was produced by the plot treated with leaf water extract (LWE), whereas the maximum number of weeds per m2 (138 m-2) was produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE). Mean values for AT showed that SWE applied at emergence produced minimum number of weeds m-2 (129) while maximum number of weeds m-2 142) was recorded when SWE applied half at emergence and half at tillering.

Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher concentration (1:3) resulted in more productive tillers m-2 (350). Decreasing concentration decreased productive tillers and minimum tillers (317 m-2) were recorded at 1:5. HW plot produced significantly more number of productive tillers m-2 (372) as compared with SWE (334 m-2). Whereas the plot treated with SWE produced significantly more number of productive tillers m-2 (334) as while minimum number of productive tillers m-2 (329) was compared with control plot (282 m-2). In case of SET the mean produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE) (Tables values showed that maximum number of productive tillers m-2 1 & 2). (339) was produced by the plot treated leaf water extract (LWE),while minimum number of productive tillers m-2 (329) was produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE) (Tables 1 & 2).

Mean values for AT showed that SWE applied at emergence produced maximum number of productive tillers m-2 (339 m-2), while minimum number of productive tillers (327 m-2) was recorded when SWE was applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage.

Non-productive Tillers m-2

Statistical analysis of the data revealed that sorghum extract type (SET), Concentration(C) application time (AT), control vs. treated, hand weeding (HW) vs. treated and herbicide application (HA) vs. treated significantly affected number of non-productive tillers m-2, while all possible interactions were found non-significant (Table 1). Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher concentration (1:3) resulted in less number of non productive tillers m-2 (25). Decreasing concentration increased number of non productive tillers m-2 and maximum tillers (32 m-2) were recorded at 1:5. Hand weeding (HW) plot produced significantly less number of non productive tillers m-2 (23) as compared with SWE (29 m-2). Whereas the plot treated with SWE produced significantly less number of non productive tillers m-2 (29) as compared with control plot (34 m-2). In case of SET the mean values showed that less number of non-productive tiller m-2 (28) was produced by the plot treated with leaf water extract (LWE), whereas the maximum number of non-productive tillers m-2(30) was produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE). Mean values for AT showed that SWE applied at emergence produced less number of non-productive tillers m-2(27), while highest number of non-productive tillers m-2 (31) was recorded when SWE applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage.

All the possible interactions were also found non-significant. Herbicide application, hand weeding and control plots resulted same (155 days) in comparison with sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher and lower concentration resulted same days (155). Mean values for AT showed the same result for application at emergence and tillering stage (155 days). Also sorghum leaf water extract and stem water extract resulted same (155 days) (Tables 3 & 4).

Grain fill duration

Statistical analysis of the data showed that sorghum extract type (SET), concentration (C), application time (AT), control vs. treated, hand weeding (HW) vs. treated and herbicide application (HA) vs. treated had no significant effect on grain fill duration. All the possible interactions were also found nonsignificant. Herbicide application, hand weeding and control plots resulted same duration (34 days) in comparison with sorghum water extract treated plots (34 days). Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher and lower concentration resulted same days (34). Mean values for AT showed the same result for application at emergence and tillering stage (34 days). Also sorghum leaf water extract and stem water extract resulted same (34 days).

Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher concentration (1:3) resulted in more thousand grain weight (47.17 g). Decreasing concentration decreased thousand grain weights and minimum thousand grain weight (40.61 g) was recorded at 1:5. HW plot produced significantly maximum thousand grain weight (50 g) as compared with SWE (44 g). Whereas the plot treated with SWE produced significantly maximum thousand grain weight (44 g) as compared with control plot (37 g). In case of SET the mean values showed that maximum thousand grain weights (44.62 g) was produced by the plot treated with leaf water extract (LWE), whereas the minimum thousand grain weight (42.66 g) was produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE). Mean values for AT showed that SWE applied at emergence produced maximum thousand grain weight (44.75 g) while minimum thousand grain weight (42.14 g) was recorded when SWE applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage (Tables 5 & 6).

Grain yield (kg ha-1)

Statistical analysis of the data showed that sorghum extract type (SET), Concentration(C) application time (AT), control vs. treated, hand weeding (HW) vs. treated and herbicide application (HA) vs. treated significantly affected grain yield, while all possible interactions were found non-significant (Table 5).Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher concentration (1:3) resulted in more grain yield (3575 kg ha-1). Decreasing concentration decreased grain yield and minimum grain yield (3134 kg ha-1) was recorded at 1:5. HW plot produced significantly more grain yield (3900 kg ha-1) as compared with SWE (3354 kg ha-1 ).Whereas the plot treated with SWE produced significantly more grain yield (3354 kg ha-1) as compared with control plot (2224 kg ha-1). In case of SET the mean values showed that maximum grain yield (3379 kg ha-1) was produced by the plot treated with leaf water extract (LWE), whereas the minimum grain yield (3330 kg ha-1) was produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE). Mean values for AT showed that SWE applied at emergence produced maximum grain yield (3404 kg ha-1), while minimum grain yield (3280 kg ha-1) was recorded when SWE applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage.

Biological yield (kg ha-1)

Statistical analysis of the data revealed that sorghum extract type (SET), Concentration(C), application time (AT), control vs. treated, hand weeding (HW) vs. treated and herbicide application (HA) vs. treated significantly affected biological yield, while all possible interactions were non-significant (Table 3). Mean values for sorghum water extract (SWE) concentration showed that higher concentration (1:3) resulted in more biological yield (9639 kg ha-1). Decreasing concentration decreased biological yield and minimum biological yield (8660 kg ha-1) was recorded at 1:5. HW plot produced significantly more biological yield (10317 kg ha-1) as compared with SWE (9187 kg ha-1).Whereas the plot treated with SWE produced significantly more biological yield (9187 kg ha-1) as compared with control plot (7781 kg ha-1). In case of SET the mean values showed that maximum biological yield (9399 kg ha-1) was produced by the plot treated with leaf water extract (LWE), whereas the minimum biological yield (8975 kg ha-1) was produced by plot treated with stem water extract (SWE).Mean values for AT showed that SWE applied at emergence produced maximum biological yield (9368 kg ha-1), while minimum biological yield (8947 kg ha-1) was recorded when SWE applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage.

Harvest index (%)

Data recorded on harvest index of wheat is affected by weed control treatment are presented in table. Statistical analysis showed that the wed control treatments had no significant effect on harvest index.

However, the highest harvest index value of (38.14 %) was observed in plots treated with herbicide application while the lowest harvest index value of (29.45 %) was observed in control (Tables 7-9).

Discussion

Data recorded on number of weeds at 100 days after sowing revealed that all weed control treatments significantly affected the weeds density. Minimum numbers of weeds were noted in herbicides sprayed plots, while maximum number of weeds were recorded in plots treated with sorghum water extract at lower concentration applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage. It was noted that as the concentration of sorghum water extract increased, the number of weeds decreased accordingly. The results are in agreement with the finding of Bhowmik and Dolt (1982) and Wajid et al. [13] they reported that sorghum water extract suppressed weeds germination and growth more than that of wheat.

Lower productive and higher non productive tillers were recorded in control and in plots where less concentration of sorghum water extract was applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage. The lower number of productive tillers and higher number of non productive tillers may be due to dense population and greater competition with weeds for light, nutrients and space. The herbicide application and sorghum water extract at higher concentration (1:3) applied at emergence produced less number of non productive tillers. Less number may be due to less competition between plants for up taking and utilizing nutrients efficiently at tiller formation stage and later stage.

Thousand grain weight is highly correlated with photosynthetic rate or source of assimilates during seed fill duration. It is one of the most important yield components and contributes significantly to the final grain yield. Higher grain weight was recorded in plots treated with herbicides and sorghum water extract at higher concentration (1:3) applied at emergence as compared with control. The probable reason for higher yield in weed control plots might be that herbicides and sorghum water extract reduced the wheat plant competition with weeds for nutrients, light, moisture and space thus maximized the utilization of nutrients from the soil which finally developed heavy seeds. Our findings agree with Anwar S [14] who reported heavier grains with higher application of sorghum water extract.

Grain yield of a crop is final goal towards which all the efforts are directed. Data recorded on grain yield indicate that all that all weed control treatments significantly increased grain yield. Both herbicide application and sorghum water extract at higher concentration applied at emergence produced the higher grain yield, while minimum grain yield was recorded in control. These results are in agreement with Cheema et al. [15] who showed that increasing the sorghum water extract from 50% to 100% improved grain yield by 14%. This may be due to the fact that all yield components were higher in plants treated with herbicides and sorghum water extract at higher concentration applied at emergence which increased grain ha-1. The possible reason for high grain yield in different wed control treatments may be that increase availability of nutrients and reduced competition stimulated vegetative growth which resulted in better spike population and more grains per spike and ultimately higher grain yield.

Biological, yield which provides an important physiological basis for grain yield of a crop was significantly affected by weed control treatments. Maximum biological yield was recorded in plots treated with herbicide application followed by plots treated with sorghum water extract at higher concentration (1:3) applied at emergence, while minimum yield was recorded in plots treated with less sorghum water extract concentration (1:5). The increase in yield is attributed to more tillers per unit area and luxurious vegetative growth. More biological yield in case of herbicide application and in plots with sorghum water extract applied at lower concentration may be due to the fact that decrease in weeds population due to herbicide application and sorghum water extract applied at higher concentration resulted in stimulation of vegetative growth which increased cell size, plant height, spike population and thus resulting in overall increase in biological yield. Similar results were obtained by Mukhopandyay and Gosh (1980) who reported that all chemical treatments were superior in yield as compared with control.

Summary

To study the effect of sorghum water extract type, concentration, and application time on weed density and yield of wheat an experiment was conducted at Agriculture Research Farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan during winter season 2014-15. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) having three replication. A plot size of 3 m x 1.8 m (L x W) was used. Each plot was consist of six rows having 30 cm row to row distance. Seed was sown at the rate of 120 kg ha-1. Different concentration (1:3) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 3 liters of water), (1:4) i.e. (1 kg plant herbage and 4 liters of water) and 1:5 (1 kg plant herbage and 5 liters of water) of sorghum stem and leaf extract was sprayed at three stages full at Feekes 1 (Emergence), full at Feekes 2 (Tillering), and half at Feekes 1 (Emergence) plus half at Feekes 2 (Tillering). The experiment was also comprised of control (no weed control), hand weeding and herbicides application. All other agronomic practices were applied uniformly. Data was recorded on Weed density, Productive tillers ,Non-productive tillers, Days to physiological maturity, Grain filling duration, Thousand grain weight (g),Grain yield, Biological yield and Harvest index.

Number of weeds recorded at 100 days after sowing were significantly affected by weed control treatments. Minimum number of weeds (24) were recorded in hand weeding plot followed by herbicides (29) treated plots, while maximum (183) weeds were recorded in control. Sorghum water extracts treated plots also recorded less (134) number of weeds as compared with control (183). Number of productive tillers m-2 were significantly affected by weed control treatments. Maximum (379) number of productive tillers m-2 was observed in herbicides sprayed plots, while minimum (282) number of productive tillers was recorded in control. Non productive tillers were also significantly affected by weed control treatments. Maximum number of non productive tillers was recorded in control (34) and plots treated with less concentration of sorghum water extract applied half at emergence and half at tillering stage (31), while minimum number of non productive tillers was observed in herbicides sprayed plots (21).

All the weed control treatments had no significant effect on grain filling duration and days to physiological maturity same (34) days to grain fill duration and physiological maturity (155) days were recorded in different weed control plots. Same number of days (34) for grain filling duration and (155) days to physiological maturity were recorded in control. Thousand grain weight and biological yield were significantly affected by weed control treatments. Maximum grain weight (51 g) and (10558 kg ha-1) biological yield was observed in plots treated with herbicides. Similarly sorghum water extract application at higher concentration also increased (44 g) grain weight and (9187 kg ha-1) biological yield as compared with (37 g) grain weight and (7781 kg ha-1) biological yield in control. While minimum (37 g) grain weight and (7781 kg-1) biological yield was recorded in control. All weed control treatments had significant effect on grain yield, herbicide treated plots gave maximum (3976 kg-1) grain yield. Similarly sorghum water extract at higher concentration also increased (3354 kg ha-1) grain yield as compared with control (2224 kg ha-1).

Conclusion

It is concluded that among all weed control treatments, herbicides gave best results but the allelopathic effects of sorghum extracts were also prominent and followed the herbicides. In case of sorghum concentration, higher concentration (1:3) applied at emergence gave best result. Sorghum extract affect weeds and wheat growth due to either inhibitory or stimulatory effects depending upon the quantity of sorghum and stage of growth of wheat. So the allelopathic potential of sorghum and its effects on weed flora should be further explored as less expensive, safe and harmless method of weeds controlling wheat.

Recommendations

It is recommended that sorghum leaf water extract at higher concentration 1:3 should be applied at emergence for controlling of weeds and improving yield of wheat.

Alive enough. It probably won’t take that long, I thought. Just gotta be patient.

“Chief?”

Different voice. That time it was… Alex? Sounded like him. Not another besieger, at least. I turned around, and I was right.

“Hey, what’s up?”

He held a clipboard and a pen that he found. I don’t know where he found those, but it made it look like he knew what he was doing. The scribbles he used for notes looked weird, but they looked like they made sense, a language that I don’t know. He was smart, like Jackie.

“We’ve got more reservations coming up from the basement, but I don’t think we have enough tables. Think you can get some of our friends to finish up their meals?”

“No problem.”

I grabbed my pipe, hefted it over a shoulder, and reached for the microphone to talk to my friends.

Resumão! Tudo o que rolou ‘Radio Music Awards 2018’

Rolou na noite deste domingo (11), em Inglewood, na Califórnia, a quinta edição perform “iHeartRadio Music Awards”, premiação que consagra os artistas que mais se destacaram nas rádios norte-americanas. Direto perform “The Forum”, a musa Hailey Baldwin e o craque DJ Khaled comandaram that a cerimônia, marcada por boas performances, merecidas homenagens, lançamento de videoclipe e muitas estatuetas, claro.

A premiação foi bem equilibrada, digamos… Ed Sheeran; Cardi B; BTS e Luis Fonsi se destacaram levando cada um, dois troféus. O ruivinho foi eleito, o “Artista Masculino do Ano” e faturou também “Melhor Música” por “Form of You”. A rapper saiu vitoriosa em “Artista Revelação” e “Artista Revelação de Hip Hop”, enquanto os meninos perform BTS em “Melhor Boyband” e “Melhor Fanbase”. Luis Fonsi, por sua vez, terminou a noite com duas estatuetas: “Melhor Artista Latino” e “Melhor Música Latina”, por “Despacito”.

E pela primeira vez, uma brasileira saiu vitoriosa da premiação. Anitta venceu, com o voto hot, and a disputa na categoria “Estrela das Redes Sociais”. Infelizmente, a fofa não conseguiu marcar presença no bapho, por questões de schedule, mas deixou um vídeo de agradecimento.

Além dessas, outras três estatuetas pra lá de especiais foram entregues durante a cerimônia. O talentoso Chance the Rapper recebeu das mãos de ninguém menos que Pharrell Williams, o “Innovator Award” por seu vanguardismo na indústria. Já nosso cristalzinho cubano Camila Cabello se tornou a primeira a ganhar o “Fangirls Book”, que “reconhecerá mulheres que expandiram fronteiras com sua música e sua mensagem além de inspirar seus fãs ao redor do globo”. Por fim, os caras perform “Bon Jovi” foram homenageados banda o “Icon Book” por toda a contribuição da banda ao mundo da música nesses 35 anos de carreira.

Outro ponto alto da noite ficou por conta Taylor Swift! A loira escolheu a premiação para fazer a estreia de seu novo videoclipe, o quarto da era “Reputation”. Oficializada como single, a ótima “Delicate” ganhou um tratamento visual dirigido pelo parceiro de longa information, Joseph Khan. No more vídeo, extremamente coreografado (eba!) , a loira se torna invisível de uma hora pra outra e passa a fazer coisas que normalmente não pode fazer por aí… A gente adorou; assista:

Growing Strawberries Organically

By Tim King – I am a strawberry enthusiast. In fact, strawberries are my favorite crop. The fruit is stunningly beautiful. It’s more than delicious. At their peak the plants are dark green and confident. We don’t have to plant them every year. I sell every berry my plants can produce. Yet growing strawberries and marketing them has left many a home gardener and small market gardener frustrated to the point of tears.

We’ve been growing strawberries organically in my family’s small market garden since its inception in 1986. The patch provides us with subsistence eating of fresh and frozen berries twelve months per year and up to a $1,000 of cash annually.

But when we began we made a major mistake. We were in a hurry. We ignored the advice of those wiser than us. And we waged a losing conflict with grass and weeds for years as a result.

In mid-April we plowed a portion of an alfalfa field to prepare for the plants. After plowing and discing I ran my roto-tiller through the area before we planted in mid-May. In other words we kept the field black for a month before we planted.

If I were to begin again I would keep the field black for a year. I’d combine every other week tillage with a late summer planting of a green manure of rye, oats, or solid seeded soybeans. All of these crops, except winter rye, would freeze out in my cold climate. They would protect the soil through the winter and put back organic matter.

You might think that you can put in a cover crop earlier and it will smother weeds and grasses. That way you won’t have to keep the soil black. My experience has been well established perennial grasses do just fine under most so-called smother crops. Another approach to getting into growing strawberries, if they wish to add organic matter throughout the summer, is to sheet compost the field once or twice early in the season. If you aren’t doing so already, you might want to learn how to compost at home. I’ve not done this for growing strawberries, but I do it while holding garlic beds fallow. I spread a thin layer of leaves over the area to be planted in late May when the soil has warmed. Then I till them into the few inches of soil. I do that again a month later and, keeping ahead of the weeds with tillage throughout the summer, the leaves have broken down by fall. By the way, let your annual weeds get nice and succulent before you till them under. That way they protect the soil from rain, promote biological activity in the soil, and act as nice carbon collectors for building organic matter. Just don’t let them go to seed-and don’t be as kind to perennial grasses.

Plants & Planting

Variety is important but it’s a local issue when growing strawberries. We’ve had excellent success with Glooscap and Honeyoye. Combine them both and your season, with the early Honeyoye and late Glooscap, will be extended. Although Honeyoye seems to have increasing problems with leaf disease in our garden. I’ve been pleased with Sparkle but not with Kent. We’re experimenting with Mira. To choose your varieties visit the strawberry trials at the closest University Experiment Station. Then visit local berry growers. I know of no grower in my area who has succeeded with everbearing varieties-including my own failure with Laramie. Some years ago there was experimentation in our area with day neutral berries, such as Tristar, planted as a closely spaced annual over plastic mulch. I don’t know if the project was profitable.

I have purchased berry plants from two places: a well-known national garden seed catalog and a specialized berry plant supplier from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. The plants from the seed catalog were wimpy in root, and I received exactly the number I ordered. The plants from the specialty house always has huge roots and included more plants than I ordered.

The wimps either died or sent out few and skinny runners. This assured the establishment of a spotty bed. The big-rooted plants lived and quickly sent out many thick runners. This bed is now lush and vigorous. There is essentially no recovery from poor plants-even two or three years later. Don’t settle for wimpy plants.

We hand planted 6,000 plants our first year. It was hard work and, now that I’m old and lazy, I wouldn’t do it again. But if you’re energetic and at least young of mind you can put a lot of plants into the ground without a tractor-pulled transplanter.

When growing strawberries, start with two people, strawberry plants, a bucket of water enriched with fish emulsion, and a long handled shovel. Soak the berry plants in the water for an hour before planting. Don’t dig holes with the shovel! Turn the concave part toward you. Insert it straight into the soil four to five inches deep and pull the handle back toward you about 30 degrees. This will open the soil. While the shovel is still in the soil the person not on the shovel handle retrieves a plant from the water bucket-never take a plant out of the bucket until immediately before planting-and put it into the soil. The crown-where leaves and roots meet-should be at or slightly below the soil surface. The roots should have plenty of room in the crevasse and not be bunched up. Now pull the shovel out and stomp, with your boot heel, on the soil near the base of the plant. This should close the crevasse up nicely. Don’t worry: strawberry plants can survive the glancing blow of your boot. Fact is, a friend of mine with a larger operation used to drive his tractor over his machine planted plants to make sure they were snug. After you’ve got your first plant in pace off one foot and do another plant. One person runs the shovel/stomping effort and the other inserts the plants.

Space rows of plants three feet apart-no less. It may look too wide when you plant but remember those daughter plants who like to spread their wings. They’ll turn your too narrow row into a solid and unmanageable mat by fall.

If it doesn’t rain soon after planting water the plants-even if the soil is moist. Watering firms up the soil around the roots and eliminates air pockets near them that your big foot didn’t deal with.

Weeds & Water

When growing strawberries, have ambitious weed control goals the first months after planting. Use your garden tiller. Use your hoe. Get on your hands and knees. Be vigilant. Weed, weed, and weed! You will be rewarded by easy to weed strawberry beds in the future if you vigorously police weeds now, when it’s easy.

In late May your plants will flower and set fruit. Some suggest picking the flowers or young berry clusters. If your plants were vigorous at planting don’t bother. Spend your time weeding – or fishing – in that order. Good plants begin setting strong runners by mid-June. Runners should make you smile. They bear the embryo of next year’s harvest.

A good mother plant may easily send out six daughters. You might try arranging them into the row occasionally but the daughters, like all children, go their own way.

Whatever you do don’t let your plants dry out.

I have overhead movable sprinklers for strawberries and other crops, say for instance if you are growing garlic or thinking about how to grow corn. They work fine. Drip irrigation doesn’t work well. The lines get entwined in the beds and hinder renovation.

Keep weeding and watering until autumn frosts freeze everything that photosynthesizes. During a dry fall I’ll water one last time before the ground freezes even though photosynthesis has been shut down for a while.

Winter Mulch

Where I live the ground freezes by early November. We cover our berry beds with a couple inches of straw or round-baled meadow hay in late October. We do this not to protect the plants from freezing. The mulch keeps them from drying out if there is no snow cover. More importantly it protects the crowns from the expanding and contracting soil as it thaws, freezes, and thaws in the spring. Failure to protect the crowns from this frost heaving may destroy them. Everybody mulches. You’ve got to learn how to lay mulch to protect your precious plants.

For a mulch we prefer a grass such as reed canary. It has less weed seeds than straw. The bindweed in our fields came in with a neighbor’s oat straw. Round-baled hay or straw is easier to break apart and fluff up than square bales.

The longer you wait to uncover your plants in the spring the longer you’ll wait for strawberry flowers. This can be good. Or bad. If you keep the straw on longer you might miss a damaging frost. If you pull the straw off as soon as the ground is done with its spring freezing and thawing cycle you’ll get berries earlier. I wait. But I always uncover the plants when I see the early signs of new growth under the mulch.

Strawberry plants look horrid after a winter under mulch and snow. Don’t despair. Clean up the aisles to fourteen to eighteen inches wide. Get your beds about 18 inches wide. The plants will do the rest. Trust nature.

Frost Protection

But keep your eyes on the thermometer.

If your plants are flowering or have green fruit and the thermometer is dipping toward freezing you better have been ready a long time ago.

I actually like getting up at mid-night, walking through the woods to my berry patch, and checking the thermometer. I like going back at 1:00 a.m. and again at 2:00 a.m. to turn on the sprinklers because the mercury is now at 33°F. I like standing in the dark and listening to the sprinklers start to hiss and click. I don’t mind turning the sprinklers off at 7:30 a.m. as the last ice melts from the flower clusters. It’s a pleasant way to spend a night. What I do mind is working all day after that. And I do mind pumping 10,000 gallons of water on a field that doesn’t need it. Besides, the charm of hooting owls wears off the second night of frost.

We purchased 1,000 feet of six-foot wide heavy plastic film eight years ago. It doesn’t wear out if you halfway take care of it. If we anticipate a frost we cover the plants at dusk. If you don’t want to use plastic try straw-but you’ll need lots of it. And plastic is a lot easier to put on, take off, and put on as that grueling four-night cold snap rolls through at the end of May. Even though, sometimes I miss those crisp spring walks under the full moon.

Summer Mulch-Bugs

Straw is used to mulch the aisles. Tuck it under the leaves and flower clusters that should be hanging into the aisle. Tuck it into the beds where berries might get splashed with soil. We try to leave a little straw from the winter in the beds, making sure it doesn’t cover plants. You’ll need more for the aisles. Mulch in the aisles will give you brief weed control, it will add organic matter, and it will make for pleasant picking.

Just after the first big king berry blossoms open the clipper beetle may strike your patch. Actually it’s a black weevil 1/16-inch long. Ms. Clipper spends her winters in the woods and before you came she fed her babies on wild strawberry pollen. Yours is better and more plentiful. She finds your clusters of flower buds. She inserts an egg into the bud. She girdles the bud so it’s hanging by a thread. And she moves on to the next bud… and the next.

Clippers can destroy your crop. We’re still learning but I think you can keep ahead of them by removing and burning the buds they’ve clipped as you do your spring weeding. It’s tedious work and if you are planning an acre size strawberry patch you’ll have to find another solution. On the other hand you may have no clippers because they’re all in my patch.

Another strawberry bug bad guy is the tarnished plant bug. I’ve not had serious problems but I understand they are the cause of nubby berries.

Marketing Time

You’ve been weeding, watering, mulching, and protecting your strawberries for a year. It’s pay off time. Give the first ripe berry to a beloved friend. Mash the second one with your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Feel the red sweetness spread to each cell on your tongue. Now put your marketing plan into effect.

Oh! You don’t have one? You were too busy growing berries? Well it’s too late now. You should have been ready two months ago.

Here are some marketing questions:

Who are your customers?

Are they going to pick the berries? Or will you?

How much will you charge if they pick? How much if you pick?

Will you charge by the quart? The pound? The ice cream pail?

Do you have containers to put berries in?

What does your competition do?

Here are some marketing answers:

Line up customers in the winter or spring. They should be waiting for your call.

We do both we-pick and U-pick. It gives us flexibility.

In 2000 we charged 95 cents/lb. for U-pick and $1.35/lb. if we picked. Check with other berry growers and the University Extension Service for local prices. If you charge by the pound weigh the container before it’s full.

Occasionally pickers bring containers. We pick in cardboard beer flats from the local liquor store. They are shallow and the berries don’t get crushed.

You should be able to pick through your berries three to five times before the fruit becomes too small to be commercially valuable. We juice the last berries.

Renovation

Renovation is a hard thing. Who wants to cut their strawberry plants down? Tilling fewer than 90% of the plants is enough to break any gardener’s heart. But you’ve got to be strong. Failure to renovate properly will leave you with an unmanageable mat of strawberries that will choke itself. Get to it right after harvest. It takes six weeks for runners from your renovated bed to become mature plants.

We use a scythe to cut the leaves off. A rotary lawnmower will work if it is raised as high as possible. After cutting, till the bed until it is just one or two plants wide. To do this systematically you will begin tilling on one edge and gradually move into the center of the bed where last year’s mother plants are. You should till up those old mothers and keep the last few of their vigorous daughters on the far edge of the bed. These plants will form the nucleus of the new bed.

Your first strawberry season is now complete. Relax. Good luck growing strawberries next season!
