The Valentine Family, a family out of time

Millie hasn't posted a fic in a HOT SECOND.

but here I ammmm.

A few generations have passed since the Sole Survivor broke Nick Valentine out of that vault. One of those generations they shared together as husband and wife. But the more time passes, the more his memory banks fill up, and he starts to forget everything. Including his own family.

Me and @psybrepunk came up with this idea when we discussed the memory banks eventually failing Nick. I'm not sure how Gen 2 synths memory banks work, but for story purposes, he basically forgets everything after several generations. Enjoy!

There was a cardboard box in Valentine Detective Agency that Nick Valentine could never come to terms with. 

Right now it sat on his desk in front of him. He stared at the scribbled words on the side of the box: The Valentine Family.

His yellow eyes traced the words over and over, hoping it would make him remember something. Anything. 

He’d been through that box hundreds of times. 

He’d studied the pictures and read the letters and held the scraps of clothing, hoping it would bring back some memory. 

At one point, his synthetic existence had a story that didn’t belong to Nick Valentine the cop.

He had a family. A wife, a story of his own. 

He also had a son. But he knew that part because that child was the same as him. Frozen in time. 

A young boy named Shaun, that apparently was a copy of his wife’s biological son. 

Shaun had found his own way with other synths like himself so Nick didn’t see him often anymore. But when he did see him, they almost didn’t know how to act. Or at least Nick didn’t. 

Shaun’s memory was endless. So he remembered his mother, he remembered their family, he remembered where he came from. 

Meanwhile Nick, the man that this young synth called “father”, had no memories of that time. 

But one thing never changed, whenever the boy visited, he would climb into Nick’s lap and fall asleep while Nick looked over cases. It was the only thing that made Nick feel the ghost of familiarity about the past.

Nick rummaged through the box again chasing that ghost, struggling with the feelings of pain and grief as he desperately tried again to remember something.

There was a photo of him beside two young women, written on the back it said, “The Detective, the Vault Dweller, and the Journalist.” Inside the box along with it was a newspaper article called Publick Occurrences, written by a woman named Piper Wright.

There was a red handkerchief with a photo of a german shepherd attached. Nick again puzzled over who would name their dog, “Dogmeat.”

A photo of Shaun and the woman who was Nick’s wife, cuddling on the couch watching the snow falling through the big front window. “Christmas Eve in Sanctuary Hills.”

He opened an envelope and read the note that was written in loopy red writing, something about an anniversary, and how much she loved him. He pulled out the scrap of red lace from inside the envelope and admired the little threaded hearts in the material.

Further inside the box he found a small bent up fedora, the note attached to it was in his own handwriting. “He wanted to look like me, so on his birthday I got him this. He wore it until it couldn’t hold its shape anymore.” 

There was a photograph of Nick sitting on the couch with his wife straddling his lap and carefully stitching extra material on his neck to avoid further tearing. She was laughing in this photo, and it looked like he was too.

Nick ran his hand over his neck, feeling the worn stitches that had started to come undone over time. Someone who loved him, carefully tried to fix his struggling synthetic body. And she didn’t look ashamed of his appearance or who he was. The joy in her laughing face as she repaired him in this image had Nick sometimes staring at this photo for hours.

Finally his hand pulled out a worn holotape. He turned it over in his fingers before putting it into the player. 

“Nick!” Her voice sang. “Welcome home! How did the Barnus Case go?” 

The rustling of what Nick assumed was her hugging him was heard.

“Well you know, it went as you’d expect.” His voice responded.

“Daddy!” 

The sound of footsteps running to him and then the impact of Shaun jumping into his arms was heard.

“Woah careful! Don’t want to break your old man anymore than he already is!” 

“Well we missed you!” She continued.

“Oh did you?” 

The sound of Nick and his wife sharing a quick kiss crackled over the tape.

“Dad! Did you find me that type of wire?” 

“Oh did I? Well Christmas must’ve come early because I got you this type of wire, this type of wire, and, these batteries.” 

“No way! Thank you!” 

Shaun could be heard running down the hall again. 

“How on earth did you find those? I assumed he made them up.” She chuckled. He heard the couch creak as they sat down. “I’ll be honest I have no idea. Stroke of luck I guess.”

She laughed, a melodic sound that haunted Nick’s dreams.

“I’m glad you’re home Nick. I love y-“ 

The holotape scratched silent. 

The quietness of the agency rang in his ears. 

He ran his hand over the stitches on his neck again. 

“I’m…I’m so sorry.” He whispered, as if her spirit could hear him. “Why can’t I just…” 

He sighed, dropping his head into his hands. 

He stood up, getting ready to put the lid back on and shove the box into the corner where he hoped it wouldn’t hurt him anymore. 

But before he did, he pulled out the photo of her laughing on his lap as she repaired him. 

His thumb rubbed over her figure, beautifully frozen in time. Her face forever captured in that expression of pure joy and love. 

He crumpled the picture in his hand, holding it tightly against his chest. “I can’t remember my own damn wife!”

He threw the photo in the box and shut it before shoving it back into the corner and going into the alley for a smoke.

This is Cassidy the newest member of the Railroad. They were previously a vault dweller from vault 81 and decided they weren’t going to go back after venturing out. Cass was tired of the rules and regulations and braved the wasteland alone until running into a raider gang at the combat zone. She ran with the raiders for a few years before one of them betrayed her and tried killing her in her sleep for her chem stash. She killed the raider and was kicked out of the gang so she returned to the combat zone and met Cait. They became really good friends and started doing jobs on the side while the fighting business was slow. When business picked back up, Cass had to find work and ended up following the freedom trail after hearing a diamond city guard talking about it. She stumbled upon a cashe and found the password for the door in the old church and opened the railroad HQ. She was immediately interrogated and was told that if she does a few jobs for the railroad they’ll consider her as a potential agent. After proving her worth to deacon they become good friends and then she started working for the railroad under the name charmer. While she was out scavenging with deacon she found a publick occurrence newspaper on top of a bloodpack and read it. Hearing about the institute intrigued her and she made her way to diamond city. She eventually got interviewed by piper and saved nick and all that jazz and is now nick’s very best friend/maybe lover.

We are still kicking with Kellogg in Nicky's skull but with the added angsty-ness brought in by Death Shroud. Oh the plot! Oh how it hurts so good! Kellogg wanting to find someway to punish the SoleSu(s) and Nick for picking through his memories? Ugh! Give me it all.

We are cutting Billy and the Fridge. I don't want to deal with the nightmare plot holes it will bring up and Quincy will already have enough BS. Plus the more I think about it the less I like the whole quest and its placement. Fuck! Maybe he'll be referenced in Publick Occurrences? I don't care! We're loosey goosey bay-be!

Now I can bring up my beloved Vault-Tec Rep. Him in the Death Shroud? Perfect. Beautiful. Stunning. I no longer have to call him Paul Eiding as a very direct nod to his VO. Our Beloved David Dwecker is married to Sheffield and they have a house in Sanctuary filled with Nuka-Cola memorabilia (for Sheffield) and collectable plates (the kind grandmothers display for our lovely Rep). They have a little sitting area set up in the carport where they hangout, smoke, and dance together to Diamond City Radio. I need this for my mental health okay?

Shaun being Autistic is something I really want to explore. I truly forget who I first saw say this but it is not an original idea by any means. I also think the poor thing would have some level of trauma from everything so exploring that is gonna be fun! (no it will not oh my god I'm going to dredge up all my childhood issues.)

OHHHH CHRISTMAS. YULETIDE. FEAST OF ST. NICHOLAS. I find the "Seth Patrick" bit SO funny in Death Shroud so that is staying but also I feel like the feast of St. Nicholas got jokingly flipped into a celebration of Nick Valentine (Same with Valentine's Day) and people are beginning to forget the correct version. Nick tolerates it with an eye roll and a wry joke about people needing to read their history books but secretly finds the whole thing funny. Ellie has a santa suit for Nick to don during "his" holiday. Also the school children in Diamond City send Nick "Valentines" on valentines day and he displays them on his corkboard.

Music. My god the Johnny Guitar bit had me by the throat during Death Shroud. Expand those music libraries! Before you know it I'm gonna give Travis a rolling ladder attached to bookcases upon bookcases of records and holotapes. I want to hear people complain about how many Andrews Sisters records survived and God why won't Travis stop playing them!

The Flavor of Goodneighbor needs to be so complex. Like a good pasta sauce. I better be so overcome by the layers and smells and textures. Better Goodneighbor and Better Third Rail are really good starts but I'm expanding the shit out of both of them I think. I want to feel like Goodneighbor truly is dangerous to be in. Being able to cross most of the town in one sprint burst isn't cutting it Bethany Esda! Make it truly baffling how Hancock knows so much about the happenings in his town.

- 8. are about the BoS and I stand by them. You will get to meet my Lone Wanderer and learn about the hierarchies a little better. I redesigned the Orders and added one I think? I have to re-sort those notes lmao. Also the piloting thing is like MAJORLY important to me because the frequency of vertibird crashes in game pissed me off to no end.

Danse is just... Like That now. I can't wait to explore his character before and after Blind Betrayal especially because he will not be leaving the Brotherhood and he will still be Like That. [spoiler warning ;) for my story lol] I can't wait for the beautiful moments that will be born of it.

I actually kind of love some of the plot points in Death Shroud like the Mob Family wars? Staying 100%. Same with Ma and Boss Lombardo and some of the other families.

As is Charlie but I refuse to let him die. I got very attached to Charlie and his death was so perfect but this time he gets to stay alive dammit.

Vault-Tec Rep (David my beloved) being the saddest, wettest cat of a man imaginable when he's in Goodneighbor? Also fucking genius.

Ruffino's and the Black Rose is being transplanted somewhere and maybe might be near the Combat Zone. New den of sin anyone?

Obviously I'm not going to attempt to pull apart the fabric of reality in-canon but my god Death Shroud was fun <3

Diamond City is bigger and more populated, kind of in the same vein as the Goodneighbor HC. I haven't found a mod layout I like so I might end up redesigning it (Please kill me)

This is an old one from an ask! Hancock will help work the bar at the Third Rail occasionally. He's a notorious show off and his cocktails are mainly just straight liquor but he entertains the hell out of people when he dives over the bar to take orders and bother Whitechapel Charlie. There are major losses on nights he bartends due to the fact he forgets (sometimes purposefully) to take payment. Regulars know to put the cash in the tip jar so Whitechapel can collect it at the end of the night.

Another thing I'm keeping from an ancient ask, Danse wants kids. Badly. And the crushing blow of being sterile really fucks with him for a while. but he eventually comes to terms with it. He's also still touchy (as in he's always touching his partner) per that ask because I think that's cute.

Just the general vibe of raiders employing children and stringing more dead mutilated bodies about. There are mods for that and let me tell you they make the raider camps horrifying. No I will not be linking them. But they are available on Nexus should you want them.

Okay I'm changing the layout of everything apparently: Including but not limited to the Railroad HQ, The Prydwen, Vault 111, etc. Fuck game design I guess lmao. I like XFreakish's Railroad Redone and NordKitten's A Sensible Prydwen Overhaul for in game and basically plan to build off of them.

Fuzzy's Fallout 4 Mod List

Finally decided to put together a list of the mods I use. (I even made a quick and crappy banner!)

I use Vortex to manage my mods, it's super easy and basically holds your hand through installing and setting up mods. You're also going to need F4SE no matter what.

I mostly find my mods on Nexus, so just search the names listed here on there. Anything not found on Nexus will have a link to it (tumblr only allows 100 links, so I couldn't just link everything).

I would also recommend keeping all of your original file downloads in a seperate folder in your games drive or wherever, organised however is easiest for you. That way you can check what you have outside of the manager, and don't have to re-download everything if you decide you need to nuke vortex and start fresh - just look for updated files only. You also won't completely lose access to the mods you really enjoy if the author decides to hide or get rid of them, since you'll always keep a version on your computer.

I also play with a lot of Creation Club content.

Woe be upon those who enter beyond here, the list is long.

But the only significant issues I have is that when I die my game crashes to desktop, and the excess of Creation Club content loading at the start of the game sometimes bugs out the first stage of the main quest, and thus poor Codsy and Preston. I just have to skip Codsy's search bit and rush to meet and save Preston to see if he will talk to me or not. Otherwise things run as normal -for a Bethesda game.)

This is fun. Because, having been spoiled about what Georgia is going to find when she gets in there...well, Virgil doesn't know any of that. All he knows is that this random wastelander lost her son (age unknown) to the Institute. And given the hints we've got about the sort of thing the Institute does to the people it abducts, there's no way that story can possibly end well.

Looked at like that, I have to wonder if he suspected her kid was already dead. If so, kind of cold not to try and warn her, but there it is.

Unrelated, but this is also the first time Georgia has talked about her missing son situation in front of Danse. He may or may not know about it, depending on whether the Brotherhood have picked up a copy of Publick Occurrences since they got to the Commonwealth, as two-hundred-year-old former Vault dwellers aren't exactly thick on the ground. Again, if I write this fic, it might be fun to play with this as the first hint that there's a lot more going on with his protégé than he knew, before the big reveal in Blind Betrayal of what she was doing this whole time.
