Deep in the heart of Jakarta's slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world's most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the rundown apartment block has been considered untouchable. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite SWAT team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, they find themselves stranded on the 6th floor with no way out. The unit must fight their way through the city's worst to survive their mission.

You've heard me talk about how the Oldboy hallway fight sparked a revolution in action cinema that can still be felt in action choreo today, but the connecting link between 2003 and John Wick's release in 2017 is a little loose without a spectacular 2011 Indonesian action film called The Raid.
The Raid is a brutal film so influential that I figured it must've come out much longer ago than it really did. The main actor even got a spot in the new Expendables film its such an action hallmark. Yet the bleak colorgrade and CG glass shatters place this movie solidly in 2011.
This is the same year Gnomeo & Juliet came out, yet the Raid, despite holding the limitations of films of this era, feels so timeless. And no wonder this relatively small Indonesian action flick took the world by storm, the entire film is basically an hour and forty minutes of the Oldboy hallway fight, escalating in brutality as the few survivors of a Vice squad tactical team go up against a horde of criminals in a Judge Dredd-style mob-controlled apartment block.
This came out the same year as Sucker Punch and Battle: Los Angeles. No wonder people were talking about it like it was the citizen kane of action just three years later. It deserves this title.
Watch this if only for the sheer historical significance it has for film. The Raid is worth it.

I might get The Raid: Redemption on 4K because wow does it look like an entirely new movie. The original version had this muted gray/blue tone that I thought added to the griminess of the setting where this apartment building that's subject to a police raid was filthy and crawling with desperate denizens. I was surprised to learn however that this 4K transfer is closer to Gareth Evans' original vision of what his film was supposed to look like. I like how the colors pop out more in comparison.
