Every Record I Own - Day 809: The Rutabega Brother the Lights Don't Work
It seems to happen every year around this time. The husband has to drive seven hours to central Oregon to check in on his parents just as the weather turns dangerously icy. And I wind up at home alone in a drafty house, bundled up in long underwear and quilted flannel shirts, hoping for a break in the weather so that he can make the drive home.
Two years ago, we were supposed to get out of town for New Years. My brother-in-law had passed away earlier in the year, and his 47th birthday would've been on New Years Eve. The plan was to drive down to central Oregon to mark the occasion with family then fly out to Mexico to be somewhere warm as a shitty year came to an end. The weather had other plans. The roads weren't drivable. We wouldn't make our flight out of the Redmond, OR airport. So I stayed home to make sure the pipes didn't freeze and the husband flew a day or two later to be with this family for his brother's birthday.
A package arrived in the mail. A Secret Santa gift from a member of the small music discussion group a few of my friends started during the pandemic. It included a Scratch Acid LP (cool!) and this album by some band called The Rutabega (um... okay?). A note included made it clear that both records were from the sender's collection.
I'd never heard of the band. Come to find out they're a two-piece from Chicago and have been around for roughly 20 years. I thought I knew the Chicago indie rock scene fairly well, but apparently I still have blind spots. Brother the Lights Don't Work came out in 2013. And that's where my Rutabega knowledge ends.
I didn't have high expectations for the album. I'll be honest: the band name is a sticking point. And the fact that my friend was basically culling it from his collection wasn't exactly promising.
But I gave it a spin and fell in love with it. It sounds like a cross between '90s Pacific Northwest indie rock from the Up Records camp mixed with a dash of the more mature end of '90s Midwest emo. Imagine a cross between peak Built to Spill and the Post Marked Stamps 7" series.
Songs like "Turn on the Summer," "Buried in the Snow," and "Through the Holes in the Floor" sounded like they'd been written for this exact scenario: homebound, alone, pining for warmer weather, a little melancholy but keeping the chin up. I listened to the LP several times a day until the weather warmed up. And then it went on the shelf until the next winter, when I found myself once again alone between Christmas and New Years, this time as my husband was stuck down in Oregon while his parents were sick with COVID. It was a welcome companion.
It's that time of year again, and it's back on the turntable. If you need a little warmth, I suggest giving it a spin.

The Rutabega : Leading Up To
The Rutabega : Leading Up To
It’s been six long years since we last heard from South Bend’s “Carp Rock Duo” The Rutebega. The band, which consists of singer/guitarist/songwriter Joshua Hensley and drummer/spiritual guru Garth Mason, has made endearing and emotionally buzzing alternative rock for the better part of 20 years. Hensley has a knack for pulling the listener into his heavy, aching songs. Songs that lock into the…

where in Michigan can i get pasties bc i’m in Detroit and have never had a proper one i don’t think
So, you have to venture to the Trump voting Staten-Island-esque suburbs for this and I also should note that I'm a west sider, so someone else could give you the info on the probably amazing pasties for sale in St. Claire Shores. That said, I like Superior Pasties in Livonia because I've never been treated with anything but withering contempt by the staff there, as it should be.
Also, when I checked to see if they were still open, this was the note on their website (they are open, but reduced hours): "Dear Superior Pasties Customers, Today we are faced with an unfortunate situation. After two years with us Angie has decided to pursue a different career. Cathy, who is Angies mom, has decided to retire and will be leaving us as well. faced with this dilemma, Lisa and I had to make a tough decision. Should we close the shop or do our very best to keep going at this diminished capacity? We have chosen the later. We will be open Wednesday thru Friday 10am to 6 pm Saturday 10am to 4 pm. We will be closed Sun,Mon,Tues but Lisa and I will be in house here Baking only. These hours may be adjusted depending on supplies and availability."
So, they're open, like whenever, you have to go to Livonia, they hate you and they use so much rutabega you feel like you are Molly Mcintire eating out of the family Victory Garden. It's ideal.
(Oh, and you should go to Senate Coney Island for the true suburban Detroit experience)

ben schwartz as sonic was, idk fine i guess. really bizarre at first because i just hear rutabega rabitowitz and nothing like how sonic has sounded before, but it grew on me, especially in 2. definitely better than whatever the hell they made smith do for frontiers
idris elba as knuckles was pretty good stunt casing i won't lie, and he did a good job for an inexperienced version of the character
colleen o'shaughnessey as tails was FUCKING PERFECT. i was honestly sure that they'd recast and even retcon her out of the teaser to cast someone big for the sequel, but keeping her on for the full role was excellent, i love her voice so much, she just feels so cozy and familiar, and she's the perfect tails
thankyou for coming to my ted talk, i know you care about my opinion
