wake up babes hurri-kitten update
THEY ALL MADE IT OVER 200 GRAMS!!!
Last week, we rescued these newborn kittens from under a trailer just as the hurricane arrived, and a few hours later it started to flood by inches. It got really, really bad and ended up flooding several feet later on. Every animal was displaced (no birds, no geckos, no squirrels, no cats, NOTHING just wind and water). it's coming back to normal now, though!
Today, four out of five of these kitties have opened their eyes! We have "placeholder" names for them (because who can resist naming a kitten??) but since they haven't had a chance to show their personality yet, when they get older I'm gonna make a poll so folks can one in the hat to help name them!!!
Their first vet appointment is in November and they're going to be dewormed and neutered/spayed on schedule 💗💗💗
Thanks everyone so much for supporting us!!! last month, I had to pay $800 for my dog's emergency vet appointment as well as prescriptions she has to take every month now.
Normally, this would have been ok for me to swing, but I wasn't expecting a hurricane to hit us three weeks later😭😭 anyone who wants to help cover my pets' vet fees, I appreciate you so much!!!
PP is
[email protected] (link) CA (link) and VM (link)
the kittens are warm, fed, safe, happy, loved, and getting bigger every day. I'm also really excited to share that a furever home has been secured for one of the kittens!!!
(if you know anyone [in the vicinity of where Hurricane Ian hit] who would like a fixed three-month old kitten in January/Febuary, please DM me!!! I'll drive within reason!)

hello!! i just found your blog and am absolutely fascinated with cat genetics! i was hoping you might be able to answer a question i have (maybe its for a warrior cats OC who could say....)
is it possible for a cat with a calico type coat pattern to not have any orange patches? like is there a type of cat that exists where instead of the orange its blue/grey so the cat is basically a monotone "calico" (white, grey, black) ?
you have a really amazing blog!! definitely know what i'm scrolling thru for the next few hours :D
Wow, i'm happy to hear it 😸 And warrior cat OCs are more than welcome here...
If I understand correctly, you're asking if it's possible to have a tricolor cat without orange, yeah?
There are of course tabbies, where the agouti background is differently colored than the pattern itself, which can look very patchy on a high-white cat, especially with blotched tabbies:
However this might not be what you're looking for.
Normally a "monocrome calico" isn't possible - torties (including calicos) all have a black-based (black, blue, chocolate, amber ect) and an red-based color (red, cream ect). The dilution level of the different colors have to be the same: you can't mix black (dense) and blue (diluted).
But now to the good news: there are chimeras! A chimera happens when two embryos fuse in the womb. If they have different phenotypes, the resulting cat will look like a patchwork of these colorations. So chimeras can absolutely mix any colors, go wild.
source, source
(I can't guarantee that these cats above are true chimeras. There could be gene malfunctions and somatic mutations at play, but the main point of this to show that such effect is possible, so i think it doesn't really matter now.)

Crookedstar's genetically accurate family tree
I have RULES i set up for myself, here.
1.) The top if the family tree are the only cats that will have their canon designs, given they are genetically possible. (ex: there were two ginger she-cats with blue eyes, and both ginger she cats and gingers with blue eyes are extremely rare, so i traded one or another out so they wouldn't have both.)
2.) I will try to maintain the cat's appearances to be as close to the books as possible.
3.) If I don't care enough, I don't care enough. If a character isn't major or a parent to a major character, I wont put any effort into making them as accurate to the books as possible. (Or make them at all.) This also goes for if it makes more sense or if im bored with a constant color palette as the generations go (and its within genetic accuracy)
Note: I could use my own bases, but I didnt feel like it, so i used bases made by the lovely spade craft instead :)
Note 2: I used generators, genetics calculators, as well as my own knowledge for this. For the generators and calculators I used, I used multiple of them to fact check. However, if any of my facts are still wrong, do let me know. I'm less confident in the eye colors, but those are less important to me.
Up to Crookedstar:
(ignore the gaping space at the bottom i didnt feel like cropping it)
Appledusk was mates with both Mapleshade and Reedshine and had kits with them, so she's here as well.
Mapleshade is a calico, meaning her base coat is black, she has tortishell red patterns, and white spotting.
Brown cats come in two colors (technically four, but those fall under a cream.) cinnamon for lighter colors, and chocolate for darker colors. He is a dilute cinnamon cat (i believe)
Male cats always inherit their pelts from their mother (this will also be important later in this post) and since male cats cant be tricolor (unless under very specific cirsumstances i didnt feel like screwing with)
This means Larchkit got the black gene from his mother, as well as Patchkit getting the red gene. (The generators said he could be a tabby, which I added as well, but I'm unsure where it came from.) Petalkit is also a calico.
Reedshine is my second case of ginger she cat with blue eyes, but instead of changing her eye color, I changed her fur color to brown. This is because this will have no effect on major characters down the line and most fan-art displays her as brown, anyways.
Willownose has two siblings, Applefrost and Shyheart, but I literally do not remember them doing anything and they don't parent any important characters, so I left them out for my convenience.
Willownose simply inherits the chocolate brown from her mother, Reedshine. Since neither her mother nor father have patterns and her father's dilute pattern is a recessive gene, she is a solid.
Shellheart has no known father, but thats okay because as previously stated, male kits look like their mothers.
Rainflower is the top of her family tree, so she remains the same.
Crookedstar and Oakheart are males, meaning they both look exactly like Rainflower, meaning they both look nothing like their canon counterparts, and there isn't really anything I can do about that </3
I covered Oakhearts kits in Bluestar's tree, so we'll only be covering Crookedstar's kit, Silverstream, and by extension, Willowbreeze's family.
Both Fallowtail and Reedfeather are the top of their family trees, so they look the same, as well as they're both cinnamon brown cats. Reedfeather is a short hair tabby, which both of which are dominant genes.
Due to Reedfeather's dominant genes and Fallowtail also being a cinnamon tabby. I didn't have a lot of room with Willowbreeze and Graypool. They're both cinnamon tabbies who I didn't put a lot of effort into differentiating.
Crookedstar was covered earlier, so all thats left is Silverstream. (because dead kits that had 2 pages of screentime are not my problem)
Silverstream is black because blue/gray is a dilute form of black, and as previously stated, diluteness is recessive. Thus meaning Silverstream is black. However, she inherits her mother's tabby patterns.
Black tabbies are a difficult topic because black tabbies are actually brown cats with black stripes. However, it's possible for a black cat to have ghost markings that fade as they grow older. (They can still be present, they're just best visible when young.)
(However, it's also possible for Silverstream to be a brown tabby. I went with black because I already know there's going to be an overflow of basic brown cats in the Clans, evident in Crookedstar's tree, and I wanted to prevent that. You're welcome.)
Feathertail + Stormfur will be covered in Greystripe's tree when I get around to him. This is because Greystripe has a very long tree going all the way back to Flashnose from the last part, and a LOT of relatives (and incest cough cough im looking at you willowpelt and patchpelt) that'll make it take longer to actually get to him.
