He was checking his pulse even after Holmes just offered him the damn cocaine?!
I can’t breathe…
This is how you demonstrate Watson is ‘ the only fixed point in the changing age’ without saying

I just read 'The Secret of Sherlock Holmes'. It was FANTASTIC. So many great lines. It also made me very emotional at a variety of points. For instance:

If you are a Granada Holmes enthusiast, or a Sherlock Holmes one in general, I would highly recommend it!

After being unfairly harsh to Jeremy about his Holmes headcanons yesterday, I just wanted to talk about how much he helped de-stigmatize mental health, and how he was a beacon of hope for other sufferers.

You do NOT want to miss this!! The Secret of Sherlock Holmes
youtube
Podcast going *in depth* on the Jeremy Brett / Edward Hardwicke stage play!!! 🎉
They've cleaned up the audio you may have heard before (on YouTube )
They describe the visuals that have been lost to time from crew interviews
They've included snippets of the crew telling backstage stories!
It was practically like being there!!
I know because I was lucky enough to actually see the play.
Part II is just commentary and is linked from this one
UPDATE: @ninasnakie asked if this was AI. I'm not sure if that means the whole play, but the the short answer is that if it was faked, it would have had better sound.
The recordings of the play (the best of which is on YouTube) were made by fans who snuck in their tape recorders, and the sound quality is pretty terrible.
So the podcaster (a reputable pro with a fantastic podcast - The Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast) used multiple copies to combine and cleaned it up manually and mentions in the second part that he did use AI to help clean it up, so you can make out what they're saying, and they have a really good discussion about that.
They didn't include all of the play audio, just key / most scenes and used crew interviews and descriptions / summaries in between. Even some of the key scenes are extremely difficult to hear even at maximum volume. I'm sure that a lot was completely useless.
I hope this helps!

The Secret of Sherlock Holmes bookbinding project!
I've really wanted a hard copy for a while of 'The Secret of Sherlock Holmes' play by Jeremy Paul, which was performed by Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke (and is very high on my list of things to go and see if I get a time machine, because there aren't any video recordings of it.)
ANYWAY it's long out of print and very expensive to buy so I figured... I can just make one myself!
First I bound the text block. It's so slim, at a grand total of 75 pages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bound the cover in honey-coloured book cloth, and then set about creating a cover design.
I wanted to use the official logo of the play and this amazing publicity photo, so I went into my paint package of choice (clip studio) and tweaked the photograph until I was happy I'd got a likeness of the actors only using black and white. I think Jeremy Brett lost a little of his handsomeness, alas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A while ago I bought a cutting machine, a Silhouette Portrait, which comes with some great software which can automatically convert an image like this into a path for the cutting machine to follow, although I usually tweak it manually too.
For example, I figured the weave on Hardwicke's tie was too intricate so I removed it.
Tumblr media
Then I set the cutting machine to work!
For a while I tried using self-adhesive vinyl to make covers, but I found that it wasn't very hard-wearing and would start peeling off. These days I use self-adhesive vinyl to make a stencil, and then paint onto the book cloth in acrylic. The fact that the stencil is self-adhesive reduces the chances of any paint sneaking in underneath!
Tumblr media
(The stencil is gold just because I have a lot of spare gold vinyl - it's probably not the best colour to use.)
For this project I did something I've never done before, which is doing two layered stencils, a white layer underneath, and then a black layer on top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I kind of regret not painting all of the figures in white because if you squint you can see the line where the white stops on the final piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now for the really satisfying bit - peeling of the stencil when everything has dried!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm really pleased with the finished book, and it's so fun to possibly have the only hardback version of this play... ever...???

Hi everyone —
I just recently came across a real life copy of The Secret of Sherlock Holmes script book, so I scanned it for us. [scan]
I have a whole post about the play [here] with lots of links: to the audio bootlegs, the script, the program, the wonder that is Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke and Jeremy Paul, etc. and I added this scan to that post too. I know someone already transcribed the script book and posted it and I linked to that one too, but I had it in my hands and I couldn’t not scan it for all of us. I ran the OCR text recognition for screen reading capabilities and it made the title page just a bit wonky but other than that it looks good. Also the cover is bright orange lol.
Enjoy!

Lately, I been watching the Granada Sherlock Holmes (which I've been loving by the way), so I decided last night to listen to the bootleg copy of the audio of the play The Secret of Sherlock Holmes (both acts are on YouTube, and stars the same actors from the television show). It is is both lovely and very sad. The first act really condenses Holmes and Watson's relationship, and then breaks your heart in the second half. It takes that line about Watson being the "one constant in an ever changing world" and gives it an entirely new meaning.
I think when I was younger I came across the concept at the heart of the play, because it seemed familiar to me, but didn't quite understand it at the time. Perhaps, you need to be an adult to really understand the weight of it.

I can't stop thinking about this moment in "The Secret of Sherlock Holmes" ...
[Sorry for the bad audio quality, as far as I know there's no better recording. The script is under the cut below so you can read along, although it's not verbatim. Also be aware, there's shouting at approx. 0:42 in case you get startled by sudden loud noises (like me).]
Holmes is scared and lives under a feeling of impending doom, beginning to lose his grasp on reality, imagining not only Moriarty's presence but also having conversations with Watson in his thoughts ... And when Watson finally arrives, Holmes of course "can‘t say “Thank you”; he cant say “Good night,” can’t say “Help.”" ...
So he asks Watson for a match to have him close for a moment (they are in Baker Street, Holmes must have his own matches lying around) - I think this is the most logical explanation. He craves Watson's assistance, but he does not know how to ask for it. So he asks for a match instead.
Tumblr media
Ahhh, I would sell my soul to travel back in time and see this on stage! (Yes, this is a photo from the play - but I have no idea from which scene.)
Here is the link to the full audio recording of the play on YouTube: Act I - Act II You can find the script via this post by @muchtohope ! I also used it for the text under the cut, thank you OP! :)
The mood changes again: darker, menacing, intensified by sound.
HOLMES becomes aware of another presence: the terrifying image of MORIARTY. His shadow stretches across the stage, street lit, in a London mist. HOLMES is alert, afraid.
HOLMES Professor Moriarty, I presume…? (The shadow remains. Silence) When the time is right, my friend, when the time is right…
The shadow moves away. WATSON's voice is heard.
WATSON Holmes? (HOLMES stays perfectly still) Can I be of assistance?
HOLMES Your presence might be invaluable.
WATSON You speak of danger. You are afraid of something?
HOLMES Well, I am.
WATSON Of what?
HOLMES Of air-guns.
This comes as a terrifying shriek from HOLMES. WATSON's voice has been in HOLMES' mind. Now his voice can be heard off-stage.
WATSON Holmes?
HOLMES (with quiet relief) My friend…
HOLMES rises from chair, as WATSON in outdoor clothes enters in natural light.
WATSON How are you, my dear fellow? I've brought you a cake. Mary baked it especially for you.
WATSON presents a cake tin. HOLMES peers inside, the briefest of glances. He puts in on the desk.
HOLMES How kind. And how is Mrs Watson?
WATSON She is extremely well, and sends you her compliments.
A pause.
HOLMES Watson… I think you know me well enough to understand that I am by no means a nervous man. At the same time it is stupidity, rather than courage, to refuse to recognise danger when it is close upon you. Might I trouble you for a match? (WATSON lights HOLMES' cigarette and sees him staring ahead in a momentary trance before he becomes aware of WATSON's presence again) You have probably never heard of Professor Moriarty?
