MWW Artwork of the Day (4/15/23)
José Clemente Orozco (Mexican, 1883-1949)
Los Desempleados (The Unemployed)(c. 1929)
Oil on canvas, 65 x 52 cm.
Private Collection
In "Los desempleados," three massive manly figures confront each other. Lacking any individuality, their concealed gaze prevents them from connecting to each other or the viewer. Wearing hats and monolithic gray coats, they succeed in imposing their robust physicality while disguising their humanity. Conceived as automatons, these novel creatures seem to exist solely for the glory of the modern city. This modern-day sense of detachment is equally apparent in "Winter" (1932), another outstanding painting from this series currently in the collection of the Museo Carrillo Gil in Mexico City. "Los desempleados" embodies the New York collective psyche after the stock market crash of October 29. Profoundly somber, the picture alludes to the intense disillusionment brought forth by the sudden collapse of economic certainty.
Orozco is a featured artist in this MWW exhibit/gallery:

we need to stop equating lack of independence with lack of maturity. people that live with their parents or have a caregiver or don't work or need more support than others aren't inherently immature. there's lots of reasons why people would be in this situation, even outside of disability (plenty of cultures out there expect people to live with their parents past what we consider the beginning of adulthood), and regardless of the reason we deserve support and community through what is already likely to be an isolating experience. don't make it worse for us

yjh and kdj are so incredibly pathetic at the way they mourn each other like what do you mean yjh has locked himself up in his room, muttering gibberish for a week straight. wdym yjh is constantly clicking the tv remote rewinding the scene kdj got kidnapped over and over
wdyfm kdj knelt on the ground like a man who has lost everything over half of yjh dying what do u mean he walks around like a dead man after yjh broke up with him
