#TBT earlier this year when I was introduced to @kathrynbruniyoung great and inspiring podcasts. The first interview of hers I heard was with Nick St. Louis, a physical therapist and founder of mindful movement community @thefootcollective, and since then I have been obsessed with learning more about the feet! It's so cool and complex the world that exists within our two feet. Just imagine in the human body alone there are 200+ bones and 26 of those bones are in each foot. So about a fourth of the bones in the whole body are in the feet! Not to mention 33 some joints for mobility, that's a whole lot of machinery to make one move. In this podcast I learned so much foot function and how foot care effects the rest of the body including posture and balance. Definitely check out the @thefootcollective for lots of great resource of foot care and also foot wear. ⁣ ⁣ KBY has also done other wonderful interviews with inspiring teachers such as @CarrieOwerko and many others forward thinking and reputable profiles in the field of yoga, movement education, physical therapy, biomechanices, pain science, and beyond.⁣ ⁣ Nick St. Louis talks about balancing on a low beam as a great way to improve one's mobility. I didn't have a such a balancing beam but I did have a lot of time on my hand (or feet haha) to setup this circle of bricks to walk across clockwise and counter-clockwise. So fun to test walking balance. Barefoot jetty walk. Held a sandal in each hand to encourage fewest hand touches possible. Think I had 5 or so. MORE FUN than you’d hope. Harder than you’d think. Guessing about 2km out and back. #Repost @lukejonesmove ・・・ 👣ANKLE + FOOT MOBILITY. . If we’re looking to perform to our potential + stay relatively injury free, addressing our foot + ankle mechanics is a great place to start. . Whether we’re dealing with issues in the knee, hip imbalances, or even struggling with our squat technique, often times if we examine and fix the feet + ankles, those issues become a lot easier to deal with. . I’m gonna put a video together that might help demonstrate this a bit better, but in the meantime a couple of things that might help: . 1 - Whenever you’re in a squatting/lunging position (or even walking up stairs) pay attention to your ankle positioning, trying to keep the arches lifted and not letting the ankle collapse inwards or outwards. . 2 - Whenever it’s safe to do so, barefoot or minimalist shoes can do a lot to restore your natural arches and ankle mobility without you having to do much extra work. . 🤸‍♂️Want to hit the RESET button on your body + improve performance? . Locomoção descalça e sensibilidade 👣 . Explorar o mundo com os pés descalços é realmente uma experiência e leva tempo para tolerar a entrada constante que seus pés processam. . Um corpo saudável está sempre disposto a melhorar, pode detectar dor positiva e atrasar o limiar para a necessidade de conforto. . A caminhada se estendeu por 25 km através de vários terrenos e uma grande parte foi realmente exigente. . Para sair da cidade tivemos que passar por uma longa trilha de asfalto, é um tratamento difícil para os pés e não o melhor começo para tal experiência, em retrospectiva. . Fora na floresta nós tivemos um tratamento constantemente mudando subterrâneo, do declive e dos pés. Eles ficaram mais e mais sensíveis com o tempo, por causa de pedras, frutos de casca rija e outros freios naturais. . Parece mesmo andar por um mundo totalmente diferente com os pés descalços. Você está muito mais perto de si mesmo, muito focado em observar o espaço da sua percepção para encontrar oportunidades alternativas no terreno vizinho. . O ritmo de locomoção é completamente dependente do terreno - foi uma realização fenomenal 🌀 Seções grama se sentir como o céu e musgo é o paraíso absoluto. . Eu realmente hesitei em colocar as sandálias que eu tinha na mochila para uso opcional. . Mas quando os coloco - meu mundo de percepção aumentou de repente e toda a sensibilidade foi redimida. . Minhas sandálias Eclipse a céu aberto pareciam um travesseiro, embora eu ainda conseguisse sentir o chão. Foi um momento divertido para liberar toda a concentração e realmente me senti como uma espécie de luxo para ter a oportunidade de sandálias. . Developing PT rehab programs for my dad (Neuro/cardiac rehab focusing on balance, gait mechanics, strength) and my bro (rebuilding the feet) has really made me look back at the little things we forget about when training. Weakness and mobility deficiencies even in the smallest of muscles and joints can cause major problems in other areas of the body that try to take up the slack. You may not notice it right away, but when that tendonitis or pain begins, a problem has probably been there for longer than you think. It is important to take time for the little things. Our feet are quite amazing. With a force of ~3-4× body weight & approx 2,000 steps per mile, the feet need to be strong. That is a lot of force going through the body and now imagine all that going through poorly aligned limbs. When your car tires are out of balance what does it feel like? What happens if you don't fix it? It will cause wear and eventually permanent damage right? Wear sandals, NOT flip-flops! You and your team need your feet. Take good care of them. @Regrann from @thefootcollective - Nemesis of the human foot: the flip flop 👣 As bad as an elevated heel in shoes might be, one of the poorest types of footwear for the human foot is the flip flop. They create big problems with how the foot functions and should be avoided 👣 When your big toe extends with walking it activates a system of fascial cables that turns your foot into a rigid lever to push off on. Flip flops remove that important mechanism by forcing you to clench your toes to stop them from falling off 👣 By deactivating that mechanism your foot becomes unstable and over time creates big problems with your movement mechanics upstream. Want to see what I’m talking about first-hand? Try sprinting in flip flops and see how that goes 👣 Get rid of your flip flops and spend more time barefoot - stronger, healthier feet are guaranteed to result.
