A beautiful little Zeller’s bolete. I found the best patch of them today!! All around the base of a tree. The bugs love these, and they absorb a lot of water when it rains, so they’re often soggy and wormy. It rained really well this week, so these must’ve just popped up and are in prime condition. They aren’t exactly a “choice” edible, but they’ll make a good mushroom powder for broth or soup. The Zeller’s bolete was the first mushroom I identified and ate as a mycologist (last fall). It felt good to stumble upon a nice flush of a mushroom I know is edible, and be able to take home more than just pictures. One thing I’m still trying to figure out is the scientific name.. is it #xerocomelluszelleri or #boletuszelleri ? Is one of those an updated name? I’m pretty sure this is Amanita porphyria. Purple/brown Amanita. The gray patches on the stipe, big round volva, and free white gills lead me to believe so. It wasn’t very purple, but from what I’ve read, it’s common to not actually have much purple, or to be more brown than purple.
