SUCH FEELS.  i wrote a bit about them last night over here (spoilers for the old guard film and comics, also slightly incoherent), but here are some additional things i have a lot of thoughts about...

nile stepping up!  it makes sense that she’s the one to challenge andy because she’s the newest and thus not tied into established patterns, but it’s also great to see her really coming to terms with her immortality and her strength.  it’s painful in the situation, but it’s also wonderful for the character.

HOW DID NORIKO KNOW??? how many people did she have staking them out? what else is she involved in? who are ‘the others’?!?

but mostly i am just OH MY GOSH ANDY.  how quickly she is reduced to that simple human need for company.  noriko’s return really drove andy right into a depth of self-loathing that exacerbates her other problems, and that’s the place from which she’s trying to defend herself to nile, and... she doesn’t believe that she should be excused, that she’s worth forgiving!  so of course she can’t even get joe and nicky and booker to listen to her!  ouch!

and then noriko coming back - despite all the horrible things she’s spent the past five issues doing, for poor brutalised andy, noriko’s acceptance feels like forgiveness for andy’s failure to find her in the first place, and if andy had only been able to do that, none of this would have happened, right?  she’s got andy so vulnerable and right where she wants her.

so what the hell is the third volume going to look like?  is andy going to be basically brainwashed into being on noriko’s side?  how are they going to face off against nile leading the rest of the crew?  what is noriko into, anyway, that she’s got so much hired muscle?  what is their relationship going to look like?!?!?

how is andy going to come back from this?

if i didn’t trust greg rucka so much i’d be real mad.

OKAY SO. caffeine cryptid. a couple months ago pre-corona and when I had a job at a boba tea shop. it's a few hours before closing time. an androgynous man comes in with imo great style. he orders a large vietnamese iced coffee with 6 extra shots of espresso. we ask him to clarify because vietnamese coffee is very strong already. he confirms. we dubiously make it for him. he politely asks us if we can make one stronger. we make one w 8 SHOTS. he smiles tips us $10 and leaves with a thank you.

SWEET METHUSELA. this man is vibing at a different frequency from the rest of us and I wish him all the joy on his heavily caffinated trip. 😂😂😂

OH MY GOD I KNOW. i am waiting impatiently for the final issue in vol.2 on wednesday. and i’m so interested to see how they adapt this volume for film (touch wood, etc, that the film gets enough views to trigger that), because some of the ways they changed the film from the comics will play out further here!  and the whole thing is so painful.  andy <3! noriko <3!

I think it’s important to draw a big, fat distinction between people who’ve literally never thought of themselves sleeping with a non-op trans girl and are initially repulsed by the idea but are (or will be) willing to challenge it….

…and TERFs, who claim you can’t call yourself a lesbian if you sleep with non-op trans women, claim it’s lesbophobia to challenge them on that, and misgender trans folks in general. 

I would say I actually don’t get many TERFs after me. Most are just lesbians who’ve never been introduced to the idea their penis-aversion is not innate and are initially extremely defensive and mistrusting of the idea.
