She sat across from him on the divan, feet tucked beneath her as she thumbed through a book, making little notes in the margins. Her hair was wildly unkempt, piled into a shapeless mass atop her head, and a threadbare shrug clung to her shoulders as if to protect her from the immodesty of her nightshirt. She appeared more comfortable in the unrestricted space of the rotunda than he often did. It helped, he thought, that most of the Inquisition had learned to politely ignore her when she was curled up here.

“Why are you staring at me?”

Halesta hadn’t looked up from her book— Brother Genitivi’s Thedas: Myths and Legends, he assumed. Solas hummed amusedly, but otherwise didn’t answer. Lips pursed, she glanced up at him, to his hands, now still over the notes he had been taking. When her eyes returned to his face, he merely offered a wry smile. One of Leliana’s scouts breezed past, eyes forward and stride unwavering, walking directly through their silent staring contest. Before the scout’s foot had landed on the first stair, Halie was unfurling herself, rising to her feet.

“Well?” She paused at the desk corner, scanning over the papers and literature spilling across, before coming to stand between his knees.

“Hm?” He barely had to look up at all; she wasn’t even a head taller even as he was sitting.

“Hmmm?” Mocking, she wrestled with the smile that began to curl her lips, “I asked why you were staring at me. It’s distracting.”

“You are the distraction, da’Halevune,” Half-lidded and smirking, he scolded her.

“Oh? And what is it about me that is so diverting?”

“That chaos you call hair, for one—”

Scoffing in feigned offense, nevertheless, she dropped onto his lap. He pressed his face into the crook of her neck, breathing deep her scent of lilac and woodsmoke and rosewater: these were his. Her pebbled brook laughter, her words low and rusty, as if she had just woken up: these were his. The hum with every kiss she placed on each of the knuckles of his hand: these were his. The tickle of her lashes against the very tip of his ear with every blink of her eye: these were his, and his, and his.

Dorian was waiting for her when she crept back to her quarters, tail between her legs; confused, hurt, and angry, she didn’t notice him until after she dove into the bed and crawled underneath the thick blankets.

“Do, at least, take your boots off before muddying those sheets, amica, or your poor steward will never let you hear the end of it.”

She shuffled under the bedclothes and toed off her boots before kicking them over the sides with a frustrated grunt.

“I’m sorry, I didn't quite hear that. Are you speaking any sort of language known to man?”

She pulled the blanket down just enough to expose her mouth. “Go away, Dorian.”

The mattress shifted under his weight at his approach and he settled comfortably against her mass of pillows. Elara burrowed further under the bedclothes.

“You can’t run from me, you know,” he said softly. A noise suspiciously close to a cork popping punctuated his words, and soon the only sounds were of pouring liquid. “You might as well have some wine and just tell me what’s wrong. Whatever it is, I’m sure half the keep knows by now, anyway.”

He was right, of course. He was always right. Damn him.

Elara shoved herself upright, took one of the offered mugs, and drank the wine in three swallows before gesturing for a refill. She repeated the process once more under his scrutiny, his raised brow asking questions before he did.

He cut her off at her third glass in as many minutes, taking the cup from her hand and stowing it somewhere off to his side.

“Now that I’ve got you properly hydrated, you’re going to tell me what happened on the ramparts this afternoon.”

“Nothing. I don’t want to talk about it. Not now, not ever, forget it.”

He gripped her hand and hauled her back up with a sigh when she crawled back under the blankets. “You can lie to yourself but don’t lie to me, Elara,” he said, his flippant tone doing little to mask his annoyance. “You’re a miserable liar, anyway. Kaffas, amica. I saw you crumple from the rookery, and if I did, so did the rest of this Blighted stronghold of yours.”

She drew her legs to her chest, burying her face between her knees, her hair a shield from his imperious visage. Elara shuddered at the contact of his hand on her back, tentatively stroking as she huddled there.

“I had a… a lapse in judgment,” she said. “Ser Blackwall…”

Elara didn’t realize she had started crying until Dorian’s arms wrapped around her. “Shh, shh, dear one,” he muttered, his chin resting on the crown of her head. “What did the oaf do to offend you so?”

“He told me that whatever we had - what I thought we had - was… a mistake, a misunderstanding.”

Dorian huffed, his arms tensing around her. “What a glorious example of a - do correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the proper word in these parts is ‘jackass.’ You’re better than that. You deserve better than that disgraceful, hairy lummox.”

She sniffled into his shirt, running the fingers of one hand over the shining buckles of the strange ensemble. “I thought that there was a…” she trailed off with a shake of her head.

“So did I. Maker, Elara, I saw that kiss - thought you two were going to burn the Chantry to the ground before you went off to face Corypheus, and he was far from an unwilling participant in that.”

“Don’t remind me,” she grumbled into his sleeve, a pained sob wracking her shoulders.

His hand stroked over her hair, fingers combing through the errant locks that escaped their tie. “If it makes you feel better,” he murmured thoughtfully, “half this keep would kill to be in my position. The other half would kill Blackwall for you, just to see your glorious smile again. Actually, those two groups might have some overlap.”

She smiled weakly against his shoulder, rubbing her tear-dampened cheek over the complicated fabrics of Dorian’s shirt. “And where would you be in all that mess?”

“Right here, fending them all off, of course. What kind of scandalous, illicit lover of the most sordid rumors do you take me for?” He chuckled, the low noise rumbling in his chest. “Surely my weekly arrival to your tower must have some use - I am in dreadful need of new target dummies, and a swathe of would-be suitors clambering up the stairs sounds like just the perfect thing.”

Elara laughed at the visual, wiping her tears away on the back of her hand. “As long as you don’t melt my staircase, have at it,” she declared with a dramatic wave. “I’m getting too old to be leaping down from story to story.”

“Nonsense, my dear, you hardly look a day over fifty.”

She punched him for that, a loose fist connecting halfheartedly with his bicep. “I’m thirty-five, masvian.”

“Whatever that means, I’m sure it only is a compliment, just as I’m sure you didn’t just call me an asshole in that beautiful language of yours.”

Elara laughed at his feigned indignance and curled up against him once more. Dorian passed her the confiscated wine glass and refilled it again.

“And here we are, in our proper routine. All is as it should be.”

She sighed at his declaration but did not object. It was good to have him here, even if she wanted to wallow. It was good to have a friend.

“Release me!” she says, but she’s giggling and not trying very hard to escape. He tugs her closer without opening his eyes and presses a kiss to her shoulder, then to the side of her head through her hair as she turns toward him, then finally on her lips.

Fic Recommendations

The @black-emporium-exchange is filled to the brim with wonderful stories and art for delicious rare pairs. This year I tried to read as much as possible, but I know there is still much to dive into over the weeks ahead. Here are my favorites so far from the overall collection, which I highly recommend you peruse. 

A Marriage of Convenience by @hollyand-writes What can I say other than brilliant? A Merrill/Carver Hawke longfic that focuses on a modern-day Kirkwall and a marriage of convenience. This story really has everything you could want (action, romance, smut, politicking, Carver in a tux) and more. This was one of my gifts and I was beyond thrilled. 

Something Just Like This by @theneras-la-lath A Bethany Hawke/Alistair Wardens fic that focuses on their relationship from when they met to Inquisition, where Alistair is wanted as a fugitive. Beautifully done with mutual pining, awkward moments and a strong Bethany. Another gift that made me so happy. 

The Real Treasure Was The Skeletons We Fought Along The Way by sunspot This Varric Tethras/Lace Harding story made me chuckle and grin. I’m certain you’ll enjoy this short treat, which is filled with humor and cheer. These two are adorable together. This was another gift that I adored. 

in all the years of struggle it seems we’re making way by gamerfic This fic is fab, and I knew it was gamerfic as soon as I started. Focusing on Female Lavellan/Felassan in a universe where Felassan isn’t outright killed after the events of The Masked Empire, but made Tranquil. Lavellan drags Cassandra along to fix that wrong, for some, not-so-straightforward reasons. GIVE IT A GO!

there’s no place like home by @coaxionunlimited A pairing I’ve never read before, this story centers on Female Aeducan/Female Brosca. This was like magic, I felt captivated and eagerly ate every word. I love exploring what would have happened to the other Origins if Duncan had not arrived, and this was delightfully done. 

My Vow to You by @tejaswrites This is packed to the brim with lore and worldbuilding for the Avvar. A Skywatcher/Female Trevelyan wedding day story that captivated me.

Someone in Another Time by @mythawrites This is a joy. Cassandra/Female Trevelyan story in which we have some time divergence at play. I don’t want to give anything away, but the warmth at the end fills me with autumn light. Lovely. Go read. 

Second Chances by Toshi_Nama Really full story featuring Female Hawke/Cullen Rutherford stuffed with angst and love. Bonus Cass & Cullen as the best BROTP. This is something that hits just right.

Foregone by Prix  I never imagined loving Alistair/Morrigan, but this was fantastic. An exploration of their relationship from first meeting all the way through the Dark Ritual and beyond. GO read. 

There are so many more stories, but this is already so long. Go check out the collection and give some love to these writers. Rare pairs are really where it is at!

ELFOS DE CIUDAD Si bien hay algunos elfos de la ciudad a los que hemos visto tener nombres élficos, la mayoría no. Los nombres de los elfos de la ciudad son comúnmente hebreos, con un número decente de gaélico, galés e inglés antiguo.

Otra idea es que los elfos de la ciudad suelen tener aún menos conocimiento de su propia cultura que los dalishanos, y probablemente solo conocen fragmentos del idioma. Creo que sería realista suponer que hay muchos elfos que tienen nombres compuestos de palabras / partes élficas y afijos de la "Lengua del Rey” / Orlesiano / etc.

Making Up Elven Names

This is a compilation of some Dragon Age elven names I’ve been adding to sporadically. I was hoping to have a longer list before sharing it, but hey, I can always update and probably will.

Sources include the DA Wiki, Katie’s Best Guess at Elvhen, and this thread.

Regarding pronunciation: According to David Gaider, elven names tend to avoid hard consonants. (Ex. C as in ‘car’ is hard, C as in ‘cell’ is soft.) Take or leave this, lol.

Gender: I suppose I could use (F) (M) (N) based on what I think sounds that way, but really, who am I to decide that? So I will leave that up to the reader.

Common prefixes, found in-game, lore, and novels: El- Ari- Mar- Nes-

Common suffixes, found in-game, lore, and novels: -wen -riel -ora -anni -aya -rian -el

You can mess around with the above parts however you feel like, if you so choose.

You might also consider naming your character after a past elven hero.

City Elves

While there are a few city elves who we’ve seen having elvhen names, most do not. City elf names are most commonly Hebrew, with a decent number of Gaelic, Welsh, and Old English. You can use many different baby name websites to find them, but be careful; when you find one you like, it’s probably best to check a few different sources via Google to be sure about the origin/meaning, if you care about that.

Another idea, maybe: City elves typically have even less knowledge of their own culture than the Dalish, and probably only know bits and pieces of the language. I think it’d be realistic to assume there are many elves who have names composed of elvhen words/parts and “King’s Tongue/Orlesian/etc” affixes. This list does not include these options, but the reason I’m bringing this up as something to think about? IDK.

There are a number of Dalish elves who have “regular” names from for example, Hebrew origins as well. But a lot of them have “elfy” names.

In English people name their children things like Melody, Forrest, Destiny, etc. This is no different, and canonically a thing. (I.e. Solas, Abelas…)

Team North America/Australia DWC Update!

Hello everyone! 

Team NA/Aus has around 100 writers on the roster. This is lovely and amazing and we love you all!

However, it makes it a bit time consuming to put forth head count (due to tumblr limitations on copy/pasting mentions), and to post kick off and update prompt lists. 

Because of this, we have decided to move forward with two updates. 

1. Removal of inactive writers. 

it looks like a number of writers have been inactive for a while (several months). It is fine, we understand life happens and that you want to be part of dwc but might not have time. However, we are going to move inactive writers to an inactive list, which are not included on the head count.   

If you want to be on the head count post going forward, please affirm it on this post. Anyone not replying will be set as inactive. 

Inactive writers can be moved to active at any moment (just let us know), and you are still welcome in the writer’s discord chat. A way to think of this is that if you plan to write (even once) in the next couple months, feel free to stay active. We are not trying to exclude anyone or set limits on participation.

2. Requiring static prompt lists. 

This is another thing we have to do to make it more manageable for us to do the kick off post. Each writer need to have one static link for prompts, which does not change from week to week. You can either use any tumblr post and edit it with links or similar to your prompt list (ex here ) or you can use tumblr redirects to link to any post (see instructions here). 

Please send a direct message to admin Viking ( @thevikingwoman ) with your static link to prompts. This includes writers who already have a static list. 

 We are sorry to ask you to do this, but with the current amount of writers, the admin work has become a huge task, and we are trying to find ways to reduce this. Thank you for your help!

DWC Tonight: Special Instructions

Writers,

Due to family and life obligations, our admins are all unable to fulfill the headcount and kick-off duties for tonight. HOWEVER, DWC will still go on as usual! See instructions below if you planned to participate:

Writers who will be working from the backlog: You don’t need to do anything. Just fill your prompts, tag us, and we will reblog your work as usual.

Writers who would like to take new prompts: Please make a SEPARATE POST, just for tonight, including a link to your prompt list and any other information you’d like people to know (pairings, link to your inbox, etc.). Tag us in the post, and we will reblog it. This way, our followers and writers will see it and can prompt you from the linked list. Please don’t just tag us in a reblogged prompt list, as, due to the current tagging apocalypse, we are then notified every single time someone reblogs your list. Posts will be reblogged until 4pm PST/7pm EST.

If you don’t have time to make a post or just don’t feel like it, that’s okay!! You can just reblog your list and ask your regular followers to prompt you, tag us, and we’ll still reblog the post. If you need a prompt, chime in on Discord and I’m sure someone will be happy to oblige!
