The theme of Chance’s verse is the story of Jesus calming the sea. . . [Verse 2: Chance the Rapper] The map was useless The captain clueless The crew was hopeless The code was Rubiks The cold was ruthless The wind was music 📝: The wind, the cold, and the waves, are almost impossible for mere mortals to solve, like a Rubix Cube. . . Fantasizing 'bout diamonds Shining like Stanley Kubrick 📝: Chance waxes poetic about his own dreams of having diamonds that bling and shine. Later in the song, the diamonds and money (Cash) won’t be worth anything because of his experience with Jesus. . . Mud sloshing, swash-buckling Mop bucket Clean enough to see your reflection And not touch it Clear enough to hear your own mind And not trust it 📝: Chance is now a swash-buckling member of the crew on the ship in which Jesus calms the sea. He humbly swabs the deck. . He no longer trusts his own mind because he has heard the voice of Jesus. . . Close enough that the goal became dry land And sirens sang of home And the boat became an island 📝: Chance is close to returning safely to the shore (Salvation) and home (Heaven) because Jesus is there to calm the sea. The boat that once rocked dangerously in the sea is now still. Safe like an island. . . Cash turn to ash once the sea became silent 📝: Jesus calmed the sea. At that point, everything changed. Money is worth nothing because God is everything. Mark 4:37-40 Also play on words. If you remove “C” (which rhymes with sea) from Cash it becomes Ash. . . I feel like suffering so here is some more to reader dying:

What if it’s because Csilla makes you sick? It’s already a rather uncomfortable world to live on if you’re used to it but to a human who probably lived on an earth-like planet? Maybe a preexisting condition, that you didn’t even know about but Csilla’s climate made it worse and your body finally can’t handle it anymore... Thrass of course makes sure you are as comfortable as possible, even asking you to leave for a planet with a different climate if that would make it better. But you stay. You won’t abandon the family you just found (obv Thrass can’t just leave, Thrawn is away and what about Theomi?) Fast forward to Thrawn arriving after a long absence. You never told him, not wanting to distract him from his mission. And when he comes back it’s too late. You are gone.

Thrawn and Thrass trying to cope with their loss. Thrawn and Thrass trying to deal with the guilt. Because you wouldn’t have died had you never come to Csilla. It was their love for them that killed you

Hmmm... That is a tricky one, huh?

I think here... this would cause a huge rift.

He asks why, why didn’t you tell him? Why didn’t Thrass tell him? And Thrass stays looking down, seeming more hollow than Thrawn remembers, and says simply that you instructed him not to. What was he to do? Ignore your requests? No... he couldn’t.

But Thrawn stays angry, stays hating what his brother has done. And somehow, just this once, it seems their personalities have switched. Never before has Thrawn yelled so heatedly, and in turn, never before has Thrass argued so coldly.

“You let them stay here,” Thrawn begins, feeling a fire in him that had never existed in even the worst of situations. “You may as well have killed them-”

“And you would have rather me, what?” Thrass interjects, seeming barely conscious as it is, “Forced them onto a ship? Taken them far into the galaxy and dropped them off somewhere as if it would make any difference? You know damn well it wouldn’t have done a thing. They were determined to stay no matter the cost.”

“It wasn’t your call to make!”

“Who’s was it, then? Yours?” He gives a cold laugh. “You know why they didn’t want to tell you, right? They didn’t ‘want to distract you.’ What does that tell you?”

Thrawn says nothing. He knows he’d regret it if he did.

“It tells me,” Thrass continues, “That you’re too caught up in the world, in people that don’t give a shit about you, to notice when the one person you’re supposed to protect is dying. It tells me, that time and time again, what they needed was brushed aside in favour of your shaky career, and they died for it.”

For once, Thrawn can think of nothing. Nothing to say. Nothing else to feel. What use is there? It won’t change anything. It won’t bring you back.

“I did this...” is all he can manage to whisper.

Thrass stares off, looking as if he might collapse at any moment.

“We both did.”

We had the pleasure of interviewing The O’My’s over Zoom video! Soulful Chicago-based alt-R&B act The O’My’s persevere through love and loss on new EP No Swimming out now via ADA / Warner Music Group. Each song unpacks the complexity of life’s highs and lows through the lens of Maceo Vidal-Haymes and Nick Hennessey’s personal experiences living in isolation and learning from one another. Inspired by the arts and music that has shaped them, the duo manifested each track on the project in their newly built studio during the pandemic. With community at the forefront of everything they do, the EP captures the heart and strength of their beloved city like no other. While a nod to the various tokens of their hometown, they’re able to provide a comforting universal message for listeners anywhere in the world. The new era of music first came to fruition in 2020. They would then spend the next year creating multiple productions for the song and with each rewrite Vidal-Haymes and Hennessey pushed their boundaries to the next level. Surviving through the pandemic with the power of music, the two challenged themselves with unfiltered artistic expressions that served as a savior. Vidal-Haymes says their new music “incorporates what we have learned as growing producers, writers, and men but at its core it’s what has always made The O’My’s.” About The O’My’s: Channeling their experiences and perspective into soulful music, The O’My’s grabs listeners from the very first note. Made up of vocalist-guitarist Maceo Vidal-Haymes and classically trained instrumentalist Nick Hennessey, they have etched themselves into Chicago’s music scene through consistency and collaboration. Together they produce a rich tapestry of sound, pulling from a wide range of genres, decades and emotions, and have additionally linked up with a wealth of notable talent including Chance the Rapper, Noname, Saba, Ab-Soul, Pink Siifu, ZZ Ward, and Carter Lang (Omar Apollo, SZA).
