Epic Sends Out Survey Listing Potential Crossover Characters Including Peter Griffin, Goku, And Geralt
Epic has sent out a survey to Fortnite players asking them about their interest in certain crossover characters, including Peter Griffin, Goku, and Geralt of Rivia.
Prominent Fortnite insider and leaker ShiinaBR posted the list of possible characters, saying, "Yesterday, Epic sent me a survey in my emails asking for my opinion on many characters/people/franchises. I'll just post some of the most interesting ones here! Remember that Guggimon (Season 7 BP) was also in one of these surveys before he came into the game!"
The list spans several different categories including anime, movies, games, influencers and musical artists. There are some not-so-surprising choices like characters from The Matrix or influencers like Dr Lupo, and then there are some really strange choices like How I Met Your Mother and a slew of Nintendo characters, despite Nintendo not having anyone in the game so far.
Strangely, there are some characters on the list that have already been included in the game, such as Lara Croft, Harley Quinn, Batman, and Kratos. This hints that the survey might be based on old data and choices, or it could simply mean that Epic was measuring the reaction to characters who were already in the game.
There are several inclusions that correlate with files released during the Epic vs. Apple court trial earlier in the year, including Naruto, who was previously mentioned to be in discussion to come to the game. Another interesting choice is Family Guy - which presumably refers to Peter Griffin - which has already been referenced in the game through an emote that shows Peter in an edited version of the chicken fight.
It's worth noting that these characters surveys don't necessarily confirm any of the names mentioned. Epic sends surveys out like this quite often to gauge interest in possible crossovers. As Shiina said, Guggimon was on a previous survey before coming into the game, so they can be taken as little hints at what might be coming to the game.

TV Shows
* The Witcher – This one seems inevitable given the size of the franchise, and I’d expect to see it closer to when season 2 debuts on Netflix. * Naruto * Seven Deadly Sins * Supernatural * Scooby-Doo * Ted Lasso – 11 more weeks until this season’s over, so they’d have to act relatively fast. * The 100 – Don’t underestimate how intense the fandom for this show is, even if it’s done airing. * Lost in Space * Gotham * How I Met Your Mother - What? No, no way. * The Joy of Painting - Bob Ross skin? Absolutely. * Star Wars: Clone Wars – Absolutely believe we’re getting an Ahsoka skin at some point. * She-Ra and the Princesses of Power * American Dad * Berserk * Dragon Ball Z – Dragon Ball Z is listed in a bunch of different places on this list, so would not be surprised to see that down the road. * The Boys – Once they run out of Marvel and DC heroes, time to give us Homelander and The Deep. * Breaking Bad * Peaky Blinders * Star Trek – I actually thought they had teased this already for the alien season, but nothing has shown up yet.
Video Games
* Uncharted – Could easily see a Nathan Drake skin coming in the future with the PlayStation collaborations they’ve already done * Clash of Clans * Rocket League * FIFA * Runescape * Ark: Survival Evolved * Rainbow Six * Borderlands – They already did this with a Psycho, but I would love to see actual Vault Hunters make their way into the game. * GhostWire Tokyo * Yoshi/Yoshi’s Island – How exactly does this work? Is he a mount? Also interesting that only Yoshi is here but no Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, etc. * Valheim * Control * Angry Birds * Horizon Zero Dawn – They already did an Aloy skin, maybe new variants when Horizon Forbidden West hits? * Paladins * Among Us * Final Fantasy – Probably would be one of the most popular skin pools to draw from, given the vast selection of characters they could use. * Madden NFL – Not sure how this would be different than the NFL skins they already did? * Crash Bandicoot * Splatoon
Comic/Anime
* Conan the Barbarian * Majin Buu – Here’s DBZ popping up again, suspicious. * Ghost Spider/Spider-Gwen * Daredevil – Not sure why, but there are a bunch of superheroes on this list that have already appeared as skins. Maybe just new costumes for them? * Darkseid * Drax * Squirrel Girl * Aquaman * The Sandman * Shoto Todoroki (My Hero Academia) * Ochaco Uraraka (My Hero Academia) * Falcon * Green Lantern – He and Wonder Woman are probably the two most major DC heroes yet to appear, so I think it’s only a matter of time for them. * Graham Aker (Gundam) * Riku Mikami (Gundam) * Wonder Woman * Iron Man * She-Hulk * Darth Vader
[...]
Movies
* Lord of the Rings – One of the biggest franchises this side of Harry Potter that hasn’t appeared in Fortnite yet. With an Amazon series coming up, this seems inevitable. * The Matrix * Jungle Cruise – So this would mostly be…The Rock wearing a hat? * Scream * The Expendables – Extremely random to see this here. * Nightmare on Elm Street * Independence Day * Harley Quinn (Birds of Prey) – They have already done the next three on this list, so not sure why they’re here. * Predator * Venom * The Grinch * Back to the Future – Something you sort of want if you are collective Metaverse IP. * Pokémon – Yes, give me those OG Ash, Brock, Misty, Jesse and James skins. * Zoolander * Eternals * Transformers * The Wizard of Oz * National Lampoon’s Vacation – What? Why? * Iron Man
Cartoons/Anime
* Bleach * Looney Tunes * Haikyuu! * Animaniacs * Batman * Transformers * Tom and Jerry * Invincible – Yes, Omniman skin when, complete with meme emote. * Mobile Suit G Gundam * Spongebob Squarepants – Would  be popular but also seems like it would be easy to shoot a giant yellow rectangle. * JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure * Mobile Suit Gundman Seed * Darling in the FranXX * Pink and the Brain * Masters of the Universe – I would die if they did this and only did a Teela skin, not He-Man. * Jujutsu Kaisen * The Fairly Oddparents * Family Guy * Gundam Build Fighters * Sword Art Online – Interesting not to see Attack on Titan or Demon Slayer on this list.
Video Game Characters
* Byleth * Luigi * Captain Price * Little Mac * Lara Croft * Trevor – Yes, Trevor and Franklin from GTA are here. Seems logical to include IP from the best-selling game in history. * Franklin * Steve * Hero * Chris Redfield * Joel – Could easily see Joel from TLOU coming over. No Ellie? Seems odd. * Kratos * Cammy – Yes, probably the only thing that could get me to stop using Chun-Li. * Goku – I mean I know he’s in video games but… * Ratchet * Snake * Naruto * Lady Dimitrescu – Obviously just want to see how they handle this in-game. * Meta Knight * Captain Falcon
So, those are the main choices. Wondering which of these will stand out, though my money is on Dragon Ball Z first and foremost.

Perfect Blue
“Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.”
-American Psycho (2000)
I would like to attach a disclaimer, that the analysis of this film as well as the informational link(s) I have provided surrounds sensitive content that may be graphic, upsetting or offensive.
Perfect Blue is regarded as an anime classic, from the creative genius of Satoshi Kon. I’ve only seen one other Kon film, his Tokyo Godfathers. It’d be painfully obvious to say that the two films are as different as two films could be, showing off this director’s range. I would like to watch more Kon films in the future. I can see why Perfect Blue is so well regarded, but it is definitely not a movie I should have started at 1:30 a.m..
Perfect Blue tells the story of Mima Kirigoe, a pop idol that is looking to move her career in a more serious direction, with acting. Her very last concert is practically ruined by rude fans, and this starts the film off by drawing towards it’s central message, as the movie makes a biting critique of fandom and celebrity cultures.
Throughout the film, we see that Mima’s fans have no respect for her autonomy. We see this in various scenes, where her overwhelmingly male fan base makes remarks about what she’s doing with her career, and expect her to constantly keep the pop idol persona they’ve fallen in love with throughout her life. They don’t respect her enough to respect her boundaries, lining up outside of her apartment building, first thing in the morning. When Mima ignores them, they complain that acting has turned her snobby. They don’t bother to think about the fact that Mima may be going through something, or even simply doesn’t like people doing this to her. They make these complaints in front of her because they don’t care about her welfare, and they don’t respect her as a human being-- Mima is just a source of entertainment, and they expect her to be entertaining 24/7.
The elephant in the room of this movie is the character of Me-Mania, who is representative of this harmful fan base on an extreme scale. While other fans mercilessly criticize her, Me-Mania brings this onto another frightening level, stalking her and attempting to rape her. Although he seems exaggerated, the very caricature of a creepy stalker, people like Me-Mania are all too real, and are a blight on the film and musical arts. In the United States, Natalie Portman has come forward to say that the first fan mail she ever received, at age thirteen (13), was a man telling her about his fantasies of raping her.
Despite this mistreatment, Mima is brave enough to continue her career. However, her dedicated service to others comes at her own detriment. There are multiple times that she could have stood up for herself or contacted authorities from what she was experiencing, but she did not, out of fear, ranging from the simple fear of being a bother to fear of herself losing her grip on reality. This is something that is relevant to both Japanese and American societies, as women are less likely to report problems, less likely to ask for raises, etc., because of the societal roles that have been pressured upon them. As a result of the pressure from society and fans, we see Mima’s breaking point, when she starts to lose touch with reality. This is her TV show’s rape scene. Even though her co-worker was very respectful, saying he was sorry to be in such an uncomfortable position, Mima was not nearly an experienced enough actress to be putting herself in that sort of situation, even if she was in no real danger. The only one that truly recognized this was another woman, Rumi. However, Rumi didn’t even stop what was happening, it was too late.
The film isn’t quite clear, as we see things from Mima’s distorted perspective. The pressure set upon her doesn’t cease, as not only Mima, but those around her, become increasingly delusional. Me-Mania has already been discussed, but his terror almost pales in comparison to that of Rumi. I was most surprised by this, as Rumi was the only one I trusted to help Mima in the film. However, at the film’s climax, it is revealed that Rumi has been having delusions of being the “real Mima”, and has actually been the one writing the “Mima’s Room” webpage. She had exploited Me-Mania’s vulnerability to pull him into this delusion as well. Rumi had committed the murders, and even tried to kill Mima as well.
The events of this film are meant to represent the terrifying, voyeuristic way in which people are treated, just because they sing pop music, act, or other things. This mistreatment comes from not only the fans that are obsessed with consuming, but those managing the talent that are obsessed with producing. Grinded to a powder in the middle is the talent itself (singers, actors, etc.), that are held up to these unrealistic expectations. People ignore the terrible conditions, particularly in J-Pop and K-Pop, that these talents are put under, only seeking to consume/produce. This is why so many of them die young, or have mental breakdowns, and what Perfect Blue is looking to present.

NEWS - Boom Studios Announces Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers Crossover Event
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Meet For First Time in New Event Series From BOOM! Studios
Road to SDCC 2019: Morphin Power Takes On Turtle Power In Historic New Comic Book Event
LOS ANGELES, CA (July 15, 2019) – BOOM! Studios, under license by Hasbro, Inc. and in partnership with IDW and Nickelodeon, today announced an all-new five-issue limited series event –  MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES! Written by Ryan Parrott (Power Rangers: Necessary Evil) and illustrated by Simone di Meo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Venom Annual), the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fight – and maybe team up with – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the first time in comic book history beginning December 2019.
The Power Rangers arrive in New York City to find Tommy Oliver – AKA The Mighty Morphin Green Ranger – but soon discover he’s joined forces with the villainous Shredder and the Foot Clan! As the Rangers are sent reeling by this betrayal, they’re confronted by another (fr)enemy – the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Can these heroes find a way to work together to defeat the bad guys and save the world from total destruction?!
MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 (OF 5) features a main cover by Dan Mora (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Once & Future), with Turtle Ranger Helmet variant covers by Goñi Montes (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and more!

New York Times bestselling author Ryan Parrott was one of the key architects of the landmark Power Rangers: Shattered Grid comic book event and currently writes both Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers at BOOM! Studios, along with creator-owned projects Volition and Oberon for Aftershock Comics.
“Honestly, I’m pretty certain keeping this project a secret has taken years off my life. These two iconic franchises were my TV parents, each teaching me valuable life lessons thirty minutes at a time. The Power Rangers and the Ninja Turtles are too insanely awesome not to bring together. I mean, they’re both color-coded teenage martial artists who fight monsters! It just makes too much sense!” said writer Ryan Parrott. “A huge thank you to Hasbro and Nickelodeon for letting me play with so many of their wonderful toys, as it is truly an honor to be a part of such an exciting crossover. I’m the luckiest kid in the world, and I cannot wait for you all to see what we’ve been putting together.”
Simone di Meo is a comic book artist from Italy. He has recently worked as the artist on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for BOOM! Studios and Venom Annual #1,Immortal Hulk: The Best Defense, and Old Man Logan Annual for Marvel Entertainment.
“It’s an honor to be able to work on this amazing project. I’m very happy to be a part of this, one of the crossovers I’ve been waiting for since I was a kid,” said artist Simone di Meo. “Drawing these two teams together is a dream come true!”
Currently, Power Rangers is celebrating 26 continuous years on the air, making it one of the longest running kids’ live-action series in television history with nearly 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise celebrates its milestone anniversary year with the 26th season, Power Rangers Beast Morphers currently airing on Saturdays at 8 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon in the U.S.
“No one could possibly love the Power Rangers or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles more than the creative team at the helm of this epic event! Which means they’ve got every dream team up scenario you can think of jam-packed into the pages of every issue.” said Dafna Pleban, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Monsters will grow. Shells will get kicked. And that thing you’re really hoping we’ll do? Yeah, that’s in here, too.”

Biography
Saul Bass Biography
Saul Bass was a successful and prominent American graphic designer during the twentieth century. He is most recognized and remembered by his title sequences at the beginning of television shows and motion pictures, and the corporate logos he designed that still live on today. You’ve probably encountered his work before without even knowing it.
Saul Bass was born on May 8th, 1920 in The Bronx, New York, United States to Russian Jewish parents. His parents, Aaron and Pauline Bass who immigrated to the States from Europe in 1907. His father owned a small shop as a furrier, and his mother was a homemaker. He also had an older sister, Slyvia. Bass had a middle-class childhood. His family were known in the community for their generosity and kindness. (Comer 1).
Bass discovered his interest in art and design at a very young age. He was intrigued by movie posters, store signs, and all the different commercial advertisements that he would see out in the world. He started to study and draw them as a child, and his parents encouraged his interest. He recalls looking back and wondering if his love for creating art could have been a result of watching his father work all those years growing up. Although he was “just a furrier”, Bass still considered him to be an artist, and watching him invest so much time and effort into his work process inspired Bass in his own process (Comer 1).
He attended James Monroe High School in the Bronx where he graduated in 1936. During his high school career, he became the editor for the school’s literary and arts publication, The Monroe Doctrine, along with being editor of the yearbook (French 1). He won two awards from the Art Student of New York City, one for excellence in design, and one for excellence in craftsmanship (“Saul Bass” 2004). After graduation, Bass worked as a delivery boy and painted signs for local stores on the side to earn extra cash. Eventually a scout came across one of his storefront painting and after learning who painted it, went on to locate Bass and offer him a scholarship to Art Students League in Manhattan (French 1).
In 1936, he began formally studying there. He took his classes during the night, and worked during the day. While there he grew to admire one of his professors, Howard Trafton. He was a commercial illustrator and professor at his college. He aimed to show his students something in a new, less ordinary way. Bass took this and ran with it, and it would continue to play an evident part in his future designs (Douglas 1).
After college, despite it being the depression, Bass was able to secure a job. His first two jobs had relatively nothing to do with design, but a year after leaving college, he compiled a portfolio and took it around town to various agencies and made multiple calls until he eventually got a call back. Later in 1938, he was offered a position at Warner Brothers, where he would make twice as much. That same year Bass married Ruth Cooper, who he would later have two children with (Douglas 1).
His career eventually led him to relocate in Hollywood, California. It was during his time working there that he collaborated with a filmmaker, Otto Preminger to design a poster for his 1954 film, Carmen Jones. Preminger was so impressed that he asked him to create the film’s title sequence as well (Brown 1). Prior to Bass’s time, title sequences were much more basic, and had no real concept or design behind them. They consisted of just the minimum, the required credits. When Bass designed title sequences, his goal was to symbolize and summarize the film, or give the audience some kind of an idea on what they were about to watch. He recognized that for a film to be truly great and successful, the entire film had to be great, meaning they couldn’t get lazy with the title sequence (Brown 1). After all, that’s the first thing the viewer will see. So, he utilized the possibilities of what a title sequence could be, reinvented it, and mastered it. From that point on Saul Bass was the favored choice when film makers wanted the credits or closing to really add to the audience’s experience. Title sequences and films were never the same. His designs are considered to be some of the most inventive design work of the twentieth century.
In 1941, Bass was offered a position at Twentieth Century-Fox, this was a big career move and raise for him, so he took it. Although he was glad this job gave him more of a say in style and execution, he realized much of it was still fixed with a set formula, ads crammed with anything in hopes to attract the viewer’s attention. Displeased with this style, he left in late 1943 vowing to never work for film advertising again (Douglas 1). Determined to be the artist and designer he wanted to be, he took a fifty percent wage cut and joined Blaine Thompson Company, a well-known agency in New York. The only condition, no film advertisements (Comer 1). He was finally happy with the work he was creating.
One day on his commute to work one day he read that a designer and author he admired was currently teaching at Brooklyn College, and immediately enrolled. He began taking night classes and studying with Gyorgy Kepes, a Hungarian born designer, painter, and art theorist. Kepes was a great inspiration to him and became a mentor to him. He stayed at Brooklyn college from 1944 until 1946 (“Saul Bass” 2004).
After several other jobs at agencies working as everything from the art director, account person, to an office head. What he really wanted to do was design. By 1955 he finally had a practice of his own, Saul Bass & Associates. He hired Elaine Makatura as his assistant, and the two almost immediately clicked creatively, and romantically. Leading Bass to divorce his wife Ruth and remarry to Elaine in 1961. The two made a great team and collaborated on projects for the next four decades. Right around the time Bass created his agency, he created what is still considered to be one of the best title sequences in the film industry, for a movie called “The Man with the Golden Arm”, by Otto Preminger. He went on and designed for more films including Vertigo in 1958, North by Northwest in 1959, and Psycho in 1960 (“Saul Bass” 2004).
In the early 1960’s, Bass and his wife branched away from title sequences, and had two more children with Elaine, one in 1964 and one in 1967. They began working on films of their own, a series of shorts, the most popular being, Why Man Creates (1968), which won an Academy Awards. It was during this time in his life that he and his wife got into corporate identity projects. Some of their highest profile projects included: AT&T, Exxon, Quaker Oats, Girl Scouts, and United Airlines to name a few. Bass’s logos are some of the most long lasting in the industry; the average life span of a Saul Bass logo is about 34 years. Some of his logos are still in use, even 19 years after his death (Brown 1). The reason they’re still in use is because they are timeless, and it’s unlikely anyone could do it better.
Although Bass enjoyed and was great at identity design, him and Elaine were eventually persuaded back into film titles my Martin Scorsese who asked them to do the title sequences for his three films. All the directors Bass ever worked with agreed that there was just something special about the way Bass created a title sequence that made the movie that much more magical, so much so that the movie would never be the same without it (Comer 1).
What made Bass an innovator in design was that while he had a distinctive style, he was constantly evolving and finding new solutions to new problems. He once said, “You can’t find the answer by using somebody else’s answer to another question… It is not so much a moral issue. It just doesn’t work” (Brown 1). Bass died on April 25, 1996 of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 75 years old. It was a loss to the design world and to the many who admired him and his work. Even with him gone, his legacy and impact on the graphic design lives on, inspiring and affecting designers and non-designers alike.

My Critiques
1. The Man with the Golden Arm - I chose this poster because of the composition. I like the Mondrian type layout, with the geometric shapes throughout. Typically, I wouldn’t like the look of the focus point being directly in the center, or close to it, but somehow it works here. The rectangles frame the title well, with the arm having those same geometric shapes that the rest of the poster does. Even though the shapes are not the same on each side, they have different sizes, weights, and colors, the poster still has balance. The typography in this is really nice, how it separates the top fourth of the poster, and the title wraps around the arm and hand and is easily legible. It’s interesting to me that he was able to only use purple once and it still look okay, but I suppose maybe that’s what grounds the poster since it is a somewhat dark color.
2. Vertigo – I chose this poster just because it was really cool to look at. It’s obviously not moving but if you look at it long enough you can kind of see the black shaped person and outline falling down a hole of some sort. With that shape being sort of complex, I like that the color scheme is very simple, three colors, and the typography is very clear and not overwhelming. I do have one critique with this though, and it’s that the word masterpiece touches the illustration and I wish there was more of a space there. The contrast between the black shaped figure and the outline is good too, and that also adds more to the idea that the figure is falling in my opinion.
3. Anatomy of a Murder - This has been one of my favorite posters since I first seen it. The simplicity of it great. You know what it’s a poster for as soon as you look at it, and it’s also visually interesting and pleasing to the eye. The colors, black and red, also symbolize murder in a way. Red for blood, and Black can be associated with dark, bad thoughts. Since the illustration, itself is perfect how it is, I’m glad he put all the text at the bottom together rather than adding it to the illustration. It’s organized well and also grounds the poster. If there’s one thing I don’t like about this poster it’s the black figure at the end of the text, I just kind of think it’s repetitive and unnecessary.
4. Exodus – I chose this piece because it seemed different than a lot of his other posters. The fire and text was different to see. Typically, he would use flat colors so it was nice to see how he did this. It looks realistic and like the wind is blowing it around as it burns the poster. The flat blue background is nice in contrast to the fire, and the black shadows reaching for the gun behind the fire gives me a feeling of desperation. The type “EXODUS” also has that kind of feel of danger or emergency. I like the right alignment of most of the parts works well because that’s the direction the fire is going.
5. The Fixer - I chose this poster because of the line work. I think the line work is really incredible because lines are so simple, but the way he uses them is really interesting. He creates a type of mood with the flow of his lines and the person walking through it gives me the impression of such a vast space, and he does it only using the curves and distance between each line. The color choice goes well with the simple design, I like that he stuck to just three colors. I especially enjoy the detailed castle in the background, it’s rather entriquette compared to the rest of the poster. The poster has good balance even though the castle is settled to the top right. His use of negative space is really nice, my eye follows the castle, to the person, all the way down to the title which has really simple line work like a majority of the poster. It looks hand-drawn also, which I like and appreciate more than a normal font.

11 facts about me:
1. I recently started keeping a bullet journal and it’s been a wonderful creative outlet?? I don’t know why I didn’t think of doing it earlier.
2. I’m obsessed with scarves and sweaters and TEA. I love winter and fall for these reasons, mainly :’D
3. I have entirely too many pieces of jewelry. I had a phase where I bought a LOT, and even though it’s gotten less, I’m still pretty awful at restraining myself. I own an estimated amount of 200 pairs of earrings and 50 necklaces? Whoops. There’s only very few pieces that are actually valuable though.
4. I’m the oldest of four, but my mom got remarried two years ago so now I have an older stepsister and a nephew who is the same age as my younger sister xD (...I am also the shortest. Out of all of us. Even my tiny grandma is taller than me ^^)
5. I have so many allergies. ALL the allergies. Don’t buy me flowers. Don’t introduce me to your pets. Don’t take me out to dinner unless you want to kill me.

7. I love to collab on projects. Hmu. I know I’m terrible but please scream with me. I’ll draw, I’ll write – heck, I’ll even sing if you want me to :D
8. I’ve been wanting to make sideblogs for literal AGES but I’m not sure if I could maintain them and idk if people would be interested (in my original writing, in my art, in my singing) – also I really want to clean up the multifandom mess that is my blog atm :’)
9. The only sport I’m really good at is skiing, and I’ve been doing it since I could walk. I was a skiing instructor for three years before the school I worked for had to close. I have very few friends who know how to ski, so I don’t get to go often bc it’s kind of dangerous to go alone – which is why I always completely freak out when I DO get to go :DD
10. I was having a bad day today because I lost my ID and my car wouldn’t start – the cold drained the battery. These kinds of things tend to really get to me, which is super annoying :< And now of course I have to deal with fixing these problems :’)
11. I already answered one of these before, you can find it here. I seem to be mentioning the allergy thing a lot. Huh.
Aand that’s it! I guess I should tag a couple of people - please choose one or two or all of the above, if you want, or none at all :D Whichever you prefer xD (also obviously @lalikaa, @anyadisee and @ghost--fox you’re welcome to do the ones you haven’t done yet :D)

Naomi Velissariou
Actor, and theatre maker, playing with pride and perspective
Nederlandstalige versie
Date of interview: June 7, 2017
Estimated reading time: 16 minutes
Naomi Velissariou (°1984) grew up near Genk, city of Ford, in a Flemish-Greek family. After graduating from the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts as an actor in 2012, Velissariou created for Frascati in Amsterdam and appeared in several plays, movies and a television show. For her last play Sontag, she dived in to the works of the American philosopher and author Susan Sontag and wrote down her own thoughts in the essay ‘Mens durf te falen!’ (Dare to fail!) for De Correspondent. Despite, or maybe thanks to, the acceptance of failure as a virtue, Velissariou got quite some attention and recognition for her theatre work, and is considered a voice of a new generation. Velissariou has ‘a personal signature that makes us curious for future development’, as the Charlotte Köller Award Jury put it, who rewarded her with an encouragement award. Drawing inspiration from Müller, Aristotle, Sartre and Sontag, her theatre work is clever, trying to link the philosophical to a rich inner world and challenge her audience.
We visit Velissariou on a rainy day in Amsterdam. After a journey across’t Ij by ferry and a windy walk through Amsterdam Noord we are warmly welcomed. As soon as the door opens, Velissariou is constantly moving around. She pours some tea and puts nuts and chocolates on the table, while her ginger tomcat Kevin cries for attention. Before we can start chatting about her life and work, we get a little tour of the ground floor apartment, complete with backyard and garden shed. On the living room walls some recently bought Athos Burez photographs grab our attention. Burez is also responsible for posters and campaign images of Velissarious plays. "I often find photoshoots very uncomfortable, but not with Athos. With him, you are building a world, often in one day, and live in his fairy tale. You play, as children would. "

Where did the need for theatre begin?
Acting or making?
Which came first?
At first I really wanted to be an actor. Even though I was not the kind of kid that really enjoyed putting on shows. I was just very interested in languages and spoken word. My parents sent me to evening school for diction and performance, a very Flemish thing to do if your child is good with words and languages. After high school I auditioned for Dora van der Groen right away. I became very insecure at that school. I didn’t make the second year in one go and had the chance to do it again, but I was afraid. My classmates were very talented and I really looked up to them. I thought: if I have to retake this year I am going to feel so stupid, and maybe grow too afraid of acting. So I started university, with the idea of taking a sabbatical year. One year turned into five years and eventually I earned my masters degree in theater and film studies. During the last year at university I realised I really wanted to act instead of getting a Ph.D. Otherwise I would never leave my desk and I have too many impulses to do so. So I went to the Academy of Performing Arts in Maastricht.
Tumblr media
Those years at university became more then just a means to pass time, right?
Yes, I definitely got interested in the studies, but it took quite some time. In the beginning I was just delighted to be one of two hundred students in an auditorium. It was a very sobering experience after the very personal focus in a class of seven at the academy. I grew up in a very protective and loving environment in Limburg. After a Catholic all girl school with uniforms I went to a pretty rough theatre school in the centre of Antwerp. I was too young for that to be honest. It was too intense for me at the time. At the university your individuality doesn’t matter as much. If you want to get good grades, you just have to work hard. But only at the end of my masters did I aspire to an academic career. Even though it is not the path I chose, those years at uni… I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I learned so much there and gained a lot of life experience. Those were the wildest years of my life (laughs).
Tumblr media
You wanted to be an actress, but now you are also a theatre maker.
Yes, I am, but I never really aspired to actually becoming a maker or a director. It turned out to be a natural combination. I switched so many times and in the end I graduated as an actor and as a dramaturge. In between the theory, the content of what you want to tell and the actual embodiment of it, lies the creation of theatre for me.
How do you determine the position you take, as an actor or director?
In the past few years I mostly directed and acted in my own productions. I did shoot for films or television. Next season, for the first time in a while, I am acting in someone else’s play, as Ophelia in Hamlet by Abattoir Fermé. In my own work it is less obvious what position I will take during the creative process. The first question always is: ‘Am I on stage or not?’. It determines the whole further process. The past five years I experimented with different models and there are pro’s and cons for each one.
A solo is the most distinct way of working. I am alone on stage and acting and creation are automatically one. In my last production, Sontag, it was also very clear that I was directing, not acting. By distancing myself as an actress, the whole creative process could take place outside myself. That way I had more control.
I found that directing, creating and acting at the same time is not ideal for me. Occasional collective work, for me, is neither fish nor fowl. On stage, in rehearsal, I am not entirely free, because I always have to keep an eye on the bigger picture. I am not really present with my fellow players, and I am constantly absent from my artistic team because I am on stage rehearsing. Making and acting at the same time is a duel between keeping distance and surrender. The distance you have to keep to control the course of the play and the complete surrender you need to forget in order to act on stage.
Tumblr media
I am convinced art is a priori political.  Because an artist forces themselves to constantly think out loud.
How does your creative process begin?
It depends on what you mean by ‘begin’. Most of the time it is something that I’ve read or seen that made me excited. What happens next depends for a great deal on how much time and money you have to actually make a production. Right now, for instance, I am doing research for a play for next year. It is going to be a concert play, based on the work of Sarah Kane. Her work has become kind of a cliché, as a psycho-dramatic-erratic-womens theater. For me Kane’s writings are the perfect song lyrics. So I’ve been in the studio for two months already, with different musicians and producers, making ten tracks that will be the core of the play. When those tracks are finished it will become clearer what the course of the play will be. But in the meantime the premiere date is already set and the first promotional text is out the door.
Conceptualising, doing research, rehearsals, it is a gradual experience. It is a constant metamorphosis: from the first idea until the last performance. I never really know when the process begins or ends. But most of the time it starts with words, writing, and only then does it get thematic. I never see something of topical interest that makes me want to make a play about it. Journalistic theatre should not become the norm; I explicitly try to take a stand on that. Art needs to be relevant, but that is not the same as being topical. For instance, I think the self hate and suicide of Sara Kane is very relevant. But I do not feel the need to do sociological research on the current suicide rates of women in Europe.
Tumblr media
Doesn’t politics automatically enter the work?
I am convinced art is a priori political. Because artists force themselves to constantly think out loud. The choice of expressing your thoughts is, a priori, a political choice. That’s also what scares me the most the night before a première, that I am going to share my thoughts on something with the world. It feels like one of the most vain things you can do: have people pay to watch you and listen to your thoughts. You have to take yourself quite seriously to assume that whatever you have to say can somehow be of added value for someone else’s life. However, if you don’t think that, you should not be making art. It is even more vain to let people pay to see your work if you don’t believe it is worth its while. No false modesty, but you should be able to put it all in perspective. It is a difficult balance.
That balance reminds me of the struggle the characters go through in Sontag.
Sontag indeed very much explored on that idea. Susan Sontag did not want to die, because she had the feeling she had much more to share with the world. You must have a fairly big ego to think something like that. On the other hand, she was ashamed for all her ideas that were accepted as a truth. Her essays frequently became successes by the time Sontag herself thought of them as out-dated because her philosophy was strongly related to the present and her own life. As an artist you experience that as well. You make about eighty per cent of the artistic choices because you are very tired that day, you just broke up with your boyfriend, or you drank too much coffee that morning. According to Sontag art is not good because all the separate components are well-considered choices, but because the entirety of the work has one drive, one that you cannot ignore.
Tumblr media
How do you experience something losing its truth after its creation in theatre, a medium that is fleeting and at the same time can cover a tour of several months?
Sometimes I can experience that feeling… Especially with older work. One of my works A tragedy (simplified), had the opposite: it was endowed with more meaning after it premiered. It was a struggle to make and when it first premiered, not a big hit. Nevertheless it always returned, because the subject matters could be seen in a particular context: a Flemish girl of Greek decent, the immigrant story, Genk as an industrial city. I understand why it was revived. But it is a piece of work that I am a bit ashamed of, because the political message people wanted to see in that still hunts me. At the same time, I am proud of what I created.
Acting in your own play is one of the most embarrassing things to me. If you create it and act in it, you are responsible for everything. Up to and including the lights you stand in. There is nothing you can hide behind. It is my body, my story. If you don’t like it, it does sort of feel like you don’t like me. However, if people do like it, it feels like it’s your birthday everyday.
Theatre is not a talkshow. For me it is the medium of fictional relevance.
Tumblr media
Your earlier work, A Tragedy (simplified) and Mr. Jones, seems to be much more direct personal stories. A play like Sontag seems to be more distant.
A tragedy was about my family, yes, but I played Electra. I turned myself into a character to make my story more universal. So it would be more open or recognisable for the audience. Because of the so-called political dimension everyone wanted to see in it, my story got a lot of attention in the media. Unfortunately, that is all that remains now. Mr. Jones dealt with my idea of love and my relationship, and I was on stage with my actual ex. But nobody knew that, so it wasn’t an issue. Those are the works you have to make first, about origin and love. But after A tragedy, I really had to fight hard for my work not to be labelled as personal-documentary-immigrant theatre. That is not my kind of theatre.
A Tragedy was an attempt to apply Aristotle’s poetics onto my own life. Mr. Jones was an adaptation of Cocteau’s Le Bel Indifférent and attempted a dramatic rendition of my own suffering. Every concept contains something that is at once personal and distant. To me, there is no rift between those earlier works and the rest. My work just naturally continues. Sontag was very personal to me. But some people missed ‘me’ because they did not see me on stage. With Sontag I could actually really share what I wanted to say. Thanks to that so-called distance from myself, because of the themes, as well as the fact that I did not act in it.
Your bookcase sure looks a lot like the one on stage in Sontag.
Yes, Sontag also always had her picture taken in front of her bookcase in her own home (laughs). There is even a special Sontag corner in my bookcase. I have read almost all of her work now. She is an inexhaustible source to me.
Tumblr media
Sontag, Sartre, those are all quite intellectual sources for your theatre.
Yes, I guess so, but then again, who cares (laughs). But I do not want to make it elitist. I think a work of art is best when it works on many different levels. I always try to make sure one can enjoy my work without any knowledge of all the underlying philosophies. With Sontag I sometimes got the feeling people came to get a summary of Susan Sontag, a speed course in her philosophy. It was nice, but I did not expect it. Sometimes it felt like they came to see my show as an extra to the additional programme the theatres organised. People like to have a useful evening and like to think they learned something. This behaviour is also somewhat the side effect of the explicit politically engaged theatre popularity. The audience wants to see what they saw on the news, or what they read in the paper, translated into a personal, fun, manageable story That is not the essence of theatre. Theatre is not a talkshow. For me it is the medium of fictional relevance.
To me theatre is a place where pain is allowed to exist; you are allowed to feel pain and to look at it. I think that is something really valuable.
What is the purpose of theater then? Solely art?
Theater can be whatever, but it has no direct purpose. Theatre can tell us something about the human condition. I realise that sounds very cliché. For me, theatre is a way of life, of survival, but that probably sounds romantic or heavy too. To me theatre is a place where pain is allowed to exist; you are allowed to feel pain and to look at it. I think that is something really valuable. It is different from a theatre of solace. Put bluntly, I can relate myself to the world in two ways: either a sober, scientific way, or in a melodramatic, personal way (laughs). Theatre lies somewhere in the middle.
Tumblr media
I do not want to make frumpy, bourgeois plays, but uncompromising work next to having a loving life with friends and family. That’s a huge prerogative if you ask me.
Tumblr media
Do you need an environment that is direct and straightforward?
I do need an environment in which I can switch off my cynicism and hyper-awareness. Although it can sometimes be a virtue, most of the time it’s actually works numbing. Right now, for instance, I see myself talking about that hyper-awareness. I should’t  go “meta” all the time, let alone talking meta about meta like I’m doing now, or there’s no end to it.  (laughs). Then I will literally have no idea what I am doing. I find it one of the most striking things of this time: all those narrative constructs we grow up with, that makes us so aware of everything. I could just cry thinking about it because it doesn’t solve any of all that self-awareness. If you are sad, you are sad.
Do you feel the need to retreat?
My job entails being around people, all of the time. Every three months you start a project with new people and every time you establish these intense connections. Therefore I more and more do feel a need for peace and quiet. If you’re rehearsing or when you’re on tour, you end up at the bar almost every night. So, on my nights off, I like to be at home with my boyfriend. Sometimes it can feel a bit isolated, because after a while it is hard to separate your friends from your colleagues. Now I have to learn to surround myself with people on those days off as well. Really invest in my social life, host spontaneous barbecues and attend birthday parties.
Tumblr media
I do not strive for something specific. I just have to create theatre. That is my ambition.
What  are your hopes for the future?
I would like to find a balance in work and private life. After graduating you fear you won’t get any work, or if you do find a job, you fear it is not enough to provide for yourself. If you find out that you actually can, then you can afford to only take on interesting work. Now I just hope to continue what I have done for the past years, to create pieces I really want to create. That is truly fantastic. But the past five years it has been at the expense of everything else. I hope to have a real home and family life aside from work. Without having to make great artistic sacrifices. I do not want to make frumpy, bourgeois plays, but uncompromising work next to having a loving life with friends and family. That’s a huge prerogative if you ask me.
Tumblr media
What are you artistic ambitions?
To be strict with myself, not making any compromises. As an actress, I do not want to take on a role just because it is glamorous. I only want to do parts in which I can stay true to my own poetics. Sometimes I wonder if I don’t have enough ambition as a theatre maker. I do not strive for something specific. I just have to create theatre. That is my ambition. I hope that when I am sixty-five, I’ll still be lying in my bed trembling and vomiting when I have a premiere the next day, because I don’t know if my ideas are worth an entry ticket. Hopefully people will be convinced it is indeed worth it. Maybe that is my artistic ambition: to make myself go through all of that, over and over. That’s enough challenge for a lifetime.
