Geneuary Countdown: Discussion Question #1
Hello everyone!
To drum up excitement for Geneuary, I wanted to ask a question to encourage some fun discussion!
I'd like to ask what one of your guys' favorite Gene moments is. You can choose multiple because I know it'll probably be quite difficult to narrow it down!
I have so many favorite Gene moments that it was super difficult for me to narrow down, but one moment that really made me fall in love with Gene as a character and make me appreciate him was this moment from Season 5, Episode 5, Best Burger:
There is so much I could analyze about this scene, almost too much. But I've already kind of analyzed it for my post on why I love Bob and Gene's father/son relationship, so I'll try not to repeat anything.
I adore how genuinely hard Gene worked to try and help Bob this whole episode. Sure, it was technically him who created the issue in the first place, but he was just being a kid and being forgetful, something I can definitely relate to a ton. And he spent the entire episode trying to make up for his mistake, and he went through hell and back to get that black garlic.
He could've just given up at any time and run through that Hot Fudge Car Wash, but he didn't! He persevered and insisted that he should be the one to get the garlic to Bob, as he was the reason why Bob didn't have it. Side note, Gene was very ADHD coded in this episode, and I love it, as someone whose sister and boyfriend have ADHD.
Anyway, I adore how Gene apologizes to Bob right away, but it breaks my heart every single time when he calls himself a screw-up! He actually believes that he messes things up all the time, and that makes me want to reach through the screen and give him the biggest hug imaginable. He deals with so many confidence issues under his bubbly, effervescent surface, and it's always so fascinating to analyze and unpack.
It's always so clear how everyone saying that he messed up (even using his name as a negative verb) has affected him mentally. It's caused him to believe that if he doesn't fix this mistake, he'll just be seen as a screw-up, so that's why his determination in this episode was so strong. It's admirable, but it makes me want to give him some encouragement because he definitely needs it.
And him taking a moment to say that he's always admired Bob always has me 🥺 He loves his dad so much it's so cute. He really thinks of Bob as someone to aspire to be and look up to and is much more willing to admit it than Louise. I'm sure having a child who's so verbally enthusiastic about looking up to him feels really nice for Bob. Sure, Tina is also very vocal about her love for her family too, but is probably not as enthusiastic as Gene is, at least at this moment.
Also, I know it's not related to Gene, but I love how Bob quickly apologizes for snapping. It's a small thing, but it really goes to show how good of a dad Bob is.
My second favorite Gene moment is probably this one from the ending of Season 8, Episode 9, Y Tu Ga-Ga Tambien:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this goes back to Gene's self-worth issues that are hidden beneath the surface. Ga-Ga Ball genuinely made him feel left out, as seen with the line "It's not a good feeling when someone says "everyone" but they don't mean you!" It's implied here that Gene has felt excluded before, and unfortunately, I can definitely see that happening.
He's been excluded before (sort of) as seen in Season 5, Episode 17, The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee, where he was kicked out of his own band. That exclusion even led him to almost give up music entirely! So whenever someone excludes Gene, he carries it deep within himself. It actually hurts him a lot, even if he doesn't always show it. He gives off a happy, bubbly exterior because he is genuinely a happy kid, but he also doesn't exactly enjoy talking about any issues he has.
But when he had an opportunity to speak out against exclusion, he took it, because he didn't want anyone else to feel the same way he did. That was why he was the only one left who didn't like Ga-Ga Ball, because of that exclusionary aspect.
But yes, this was a fantastic speech and Gene moment. The gifs were taken from this lovely post:

Why Toki’s Character Development is Good, Actually
I’ve seen a lot of people comment on the changes Toki’s character goes through in the series, either wildly misinterpreting it or saying how it “ruined” his character. While I won’t police your opinion, I feel like I should at least write about why his change in behavior is important to acknowledge and appreciate.
It’s no secret that Toki is the only main character that goes through major character development, that changes the way he interacts with others and the overarching story. It’s no coincidence that he also has the most trauma to unpack. While the series starts exploring this topic much earlier in the series, the first episode I will discuss is S1E16, Dethkids, marking the major shift in Toki’s character.
Up until this episode, Toki hadn’t been developed all that much, and he didn’t really have much to him. He was mostly depicted as the silly, naive one, but in a mature way. He had some childish moments, like his musical number in Dethwater, and his model airplanes in Mordland but other than that, he’s pretty much your average metalhead. He fits right in.
Of course, this changes in Dethkids. The episode starts with Toki frustrated, ironically for the same reason many children are. He’s tired of being seen as a kid. And, as most children do, he rebels. He expresses the anger and pain in himself by inflicting it upon others because that’s all he’s ever known.
But with the introduction of Juliette, the little dying girl, his point of view changes. Juliette’s song is played over a scene of Toki being hit as a child, around ages 5-8 years old. It’s INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT TO NOTE that Juliette’s design is DELIBERATELY made to mirror that of child Toki. The same hairstyle, and the same tooth gap. As the song progresses and comes to a close, they sing together, and the final shot is of Juliette sitting in her wheelchair, the child version of Toki sitting across from her also in a wheelchair.
It’s a pretty in-your-face metaphor that Toki feels as though his child self died, further solidified about thirty seconds later when Juliette herself dies for real.
This event makes Toki realize that the way he’s been doing things to cope hasn’t been working. And, from this point to the end of the series, he begins age regressing.
It’s not a coincidence that the very next episode is the introduction of Rockso’s and Toki’s “friendship”.
From then on, season 2 is big for Toki’s development. He begins acting more and more like a child, while also developing problems with alcoholism.
The abusive side of his friendship with Rockso is first shown in S2E6, Cleanzo. Toki is shown to be very prone to manipulation and peer pressure, much like a child.
It’s important to note that, beginning in this season and for the rest of the series, rabbits are used to represent Toki and his mental state. First shown in S2E9 Dethcarraldo, Toki’s ancient animal form is a rabbit. Notably, Toki is the only prey animal of dethklok. All the other members are vicious predators. Rabbits are typically used to represent innocence, hope, and rebirth.
Our next stop in Toki’s development is S2E15 Dethdad, a major episode for him. In this episode, his abusive father is dying, and on the way to go visit him for the final time, Toki tries to avoid facing his trauma. A Timelapse of Toki’s punishments is shown before he has a breakdown and refuses to see his father, running away, much like a kid would.
After this, Toki has his second major song. It’s sung in a high-pitched, off-key childish tone. Not only is his manner of singing childish, but the lyrics are as well.
I hates everythings,
Includins my dads,
And also myselfs,
Why is everything so hard for Toki?
The wording in his lyrics greatly resembles that of a young child who doesn’t quite know how to express their emotions. He knows he’s hurting, and he knows it’s because of his father, but he still reflects it back at himself. The next few lines are interesting, in relation to his age regression.
Ams I a boy?
Ams I a mans?
If I hates you so much, why does it make me so sad?
And if I held you too close, will you dies in my hands?
The first two lines are incredibly notable, reinstating the fact that he never got the chance to properly grow up. He’s a child’s ghost stuck in the body of an adult, and he can’t tell which he is.
Of course, even though he forgives his father, the episode does not end well for him. This causes a downward spiral of sorts for the next few episodes. In snakes n’ barrels II, he has a violent outburst (mirrored by a hallucination of a rabbit turning into a murderous beast), and in Dethrelease, his alcoholism is out of control.
So, at the end of season 2, his mental health is at an all time low. He still feels like a child in a man’s body, and he hasn’t fully resolved his trauma.
In season 3, we see him lean more into his childish tendencies. Petting cute kitties, talking to Santa, and playing with plushies. He has two songs this season, although neither of them are in his major character development episode of the season, which, like his other songs, happen during moments of distress, confusion, or otherwise negative emotions.
Although he doesn’t have a song in S3E9 Dethzazz, and is inactive for most of the episode, it’s still incredibly important to his development. We see the return of his response to immense trauma for the first time since season 1: going still. Toki spends most of the episode in a catatonic state, going in and out of flashbacks of horrifying things that happened in his childhood. It’s revealed that Toki loves Rockso so much because he helps him age regress, and therefore cope, Tswhich is rather obviously shown through a scene of Toki transforming from his child self to his adult self and vice versa by hugging rockso.
His childish tendencies are also later shown in Doublebookedklok, with him hitting his bandmates to get attention. On more occasions than one, Charles is a metaphorical stand-in for the father each of the band members needs. In this episode, Charles reassures him, and tells him that “Everyone likes you, and thinks you’re really cool. I think you’re really cool.”, a statement he never heard from his biological father. Toki responds by hugging Charles and crying.
It’s about here that I find it important to point out that, consistently, throughout the whole series, even before dethkids, Toki’s voice becomes high-pitched and squeaky when upset or stressed.
Going forward into season 4, this is when Toki, and the rest of dethklok, begin to gain current-day traumas. As the members grow farther and farther apart, Toki regresses more, eventually turning to someone who he thinks is a supportive and kind figure in his life: Magnus. Unlike Rockso, Magnus plays into Toki’s childlike tendencies, speaking to him gently and pretending to take care of him. He does this all the way until he kidnaps him, saying “It’s okay Toki, it’s okay, just stay next to me.” Before he stabs him.
This all comes into culmination in the Doomstar Requiem, when, for the first time, Toki’s regression is not only acknowledged, but encouraged, to escape the horrific reality of torture and death, leading to the song I Believe.
Now, why the hell did I write all this? Why do I find Toki’s character development so important? I wanted to point out that it’s an undeniable fact that he age regresses. it’s a matter of representation.
At no point in the series is Toki ridiculed for being childish. Sure, his less desirable behaviors like hitting and whining are pointed out, but not once is his regression shown to be an inherently negative thing. It's just part of him. It always will be. As someone who age regresses to cope with trauma myself, it’s incredible to see. Not a single character in any media I've ever consumed has been shown to regress in age as a coping mechanism. Not only is it a unique representation, but it’s incredibly written as well. Layers upon layers of metaphors and symbolism come together to form a masterpiece of character writing. Whether you like the “new” Toki or not, it’s undeniable that love, thought, and emotion were put into his development.

Alright... that’s a lot to unpack... good grief... what an episode.
Ok, where are we? I guess the start is as good a place as any to begin.
So, here we are in part four of Leon vs. Ash. At least one of my predictions came true: Eternatus helped solve the problem that Ash and Leon’s Gigantamax and Z-move created. I’m glad that, in that sense, Eternatus didn’t interfere in the match so much as to have them call it off. I could’ve very easily seen the writers doing that as a cop-out not wanting to break Leon’s winning streak while not giving Ash another finals loss.
I do wonder what exactly changed such that Eternatus is now trying to actively keep away another occurrence of the Darkest Day, aside from just being a captured pokemon. Maybe that’s all it really takes. I might’ve appreciated more hints and scenes on this change in behaviour aside from the one we got the episode before the battle, but I can’t ask for too much more for such a one-off thing, I suppose.
Anyway, the lesson here we learn here is don’t mix your battle enhancements. Z-Moves and Gigantamax moves apparently have violent, explosive, world-altering chemistry.
I think the best thing we got out of that encounter was Team Rocket narrating the events to the same rhythm and rhyme as their motto. Considering I don’t really care for TR always butting into the match and eating up valuable screen time, that’s saying something.
That all aside, we can’t say that Eternatus didn’t do anything to influence the match. They apparently gave Leon and Ash another use of Gigantamax, which Leon elected to use on Cinderace this time while Ash could only use it with his lone contender, Pikachu. In retrospect, I should’ve expected something like this because we’d also been exposed to Gigantamax Pikachu far earlier in the series. I’m surprised I didn’t think of it, but I guess it’d been long enough that I forgot about the big round Pika-friend and his extra-long lightning-tail.
Strangely, we only got one move out of each of those Gigantamaxes with a cool pairing of move impacts that each tried to hold at bay. The announcer said the impacts forced them back to normal size, which seemed like a really conveniently mundane answer. I would’ve gone with something along the lines of the fact that Enternatus only provided so much power for their second Gigantamax, but that’s just me.
That said, the visuals in this face-off were pretty cool, and I love Cinderace trying to repeatedly kick the damn lightning bolt back up into the sky. That said, Cinderace must be quite frail since I’m reasonably certain it took little to no damage in its other appearances in the match. Meanwhile, Pikachu took that giant fire-soccer-ball like a champ and went on to stand up against Charizard.
I do appreciate that, in the end, after all those battle enhancements through the match we do come down to a classic pokemon battle. No Mega Evolution. No Z-moves, no Gigantamax or Dynamax. Just  Pikachu vs. Charizard.
And after all that, after we finally... finally... got some screens of Ash’s past travelling companions that we’ve been missing! Another shot of the ranch crowd; Misty; Brock, Cilan, and Alexa all in the same room, May and Serena in contest garb with Max and bonus Lisia! I’m not sure why we haven’t been able to get them until now, but thank god we finally got them in before it was all over.
Now, I’d be here all night if I were to narrate every move exchange between the pair of battlers because damn, there are a lot, and damn, some of them work great on screen. Pikachu using an electroweb to delay a fire blast long enough to dart away. Charizard taking an iron tail in the chest to be able to use a dragon pulse at point-blank range. Pikachu jumping from ancient power boulder to ancient power boulder like in his gym battle with Grant back in XY to get to the fucking ceiling of the arena. Dueling moves as the pair fall back to the ground. The raw displays of power between the two pokemon as they try and intimidate each other and show off their strength.
I won’t lie, I was captivated. This is the kind of battling I love to see. This is why I come back to this anime time and time again. For these moments. For these battles. I swear, for a few minutes there, I forgot about all the critiques I had for the rest of the battle in the previous three episodes leading up to this. I might’ve even forgotten my all-to-often-displayed annoyance for Leon’s character too.
This was just raw, high-octane, amazing battle and animation fueled by rad music and peak emotional investment from the trainers, the pokemon, and even me.
Then Pikachu took a nasty fire blast hit, beginning, for me, the most poignant and powerful part of the episode. All to the tune of Pikachu’s heaving breaths, we got to see the looks on everyone’s faces as we waited to see if the little yellow mouse would continue to stand:
Dawn and Chloe; Team Rocket; our favourite badass ladies, Cynthia and Diantha; Misty; May and Serena holding hands, and Max is there too; the two mentors in Cilan and Brock; Iris on her iPad; my precious lemon siblings, Clemont and Bonnie; the whole fucking Alola gang, and then the Alola adults too; the Oak Ranch crowd; and finally, Goh.
Then, from behind Pikachu’s own eyes, we saw the moment he fell over. This next part of the episode that made me actually choke up a bit.
For Pikachu, all in its own mind within presumably fractions of a second--though stretched out for us and him--a reunion with all his friends: Ash’s pokemon. All of them. From every region. Kanto. The Orange Islands. Johto. Hoenn. Sinnoh. Unova. Kalos. Alola. And the latest team too. And even pokemon Ash released, traded, or otherwise left with others: Butterfree, Pidgeot, Primeape, Ambipom, Goodra, and Nagandel.
I’m a sucker for nostalgia, I won’t even try to hide that. I love when the anime acknowledges the past sagas. And this was wonderful for me. The feelings that welled up for me had me clutching my chest.
And then finally, Ash comes up and tells him, “That’s right Pikachu! Everyone’s at our side!”
That’s when Pikachu gets up and lets out a frighteningly powerful thunderbolt that even has Charizard and Leon recoiling.
That’s when Ash turns his cap back when we know things are really hitting their peak.
That’s when Leon throws his cap off and does his goofy, though I suppose now quite appropriately timed, pose as the two contenders finally meet in their final clash of the match.
Pikachu meeting Charziard in the middle, shrouded in pure electric power contrasted against red-hot flame, was a powerful feat of animation...
...and made me wonder why we ever gave up Volt Tackle.
Cut to Pikachu on a bed in the local Pokemon Center, us as audience members supposedly clueless as to who won. It was a strange way to delay telling us who won, since they really didn’t make us wait long to show it anyway. But all said, the finale of Charizard getting domed on the head by Pikachu, letting out one last frustrated gout of flame before keeling over, was pretty neat.
Then, to my surprise, an actual moment of character development for Leon! We’d been teased, very lightly, with flashbacks to Leon as a kid. This culminates here in the completion of those scenes with us seeing none other than a young (and hella adorable) Sonia beating the young new trainer, Leon.
I actually really love the idea of the unbeatable champion having actually lost to someone before, and that someone being Sonia. Sorry Ash, you weren’t the first!
But that’s ok! Because you beat him when it counted, Ash! You got there, to that champion podium, with that damn trophy that’s almost as big as you (you really gotta grow up soon already Ash... you’re not going to be able to carry these home if they keep growing at the rate they are and you’re growing at the rate you are...).
We got another moment with the gang back at Oak Ranch, our phaesporia crumbs with Diantha and Cynthia pining for another match (so why not each other... heheh), cuts to Ash’s supporters in the crowd (aww why no cuts to our lovely companions watching from afar again? Aw... oh well...) and then, finally, to the next morning for the segue into Goh’s own finale to come next week.
So...
What do I think of this episode?
Once Charizard and Pikachu got to be the only ones on the field, it was absolutely stellar. This was a great moment for both him and Ash and I’m extraordinarily happy for their accomplishment. For me, I could end the series here and be satisfied (if only we’d wrapped up Goh’s arc before this).
What did I think of the overall battle?
It had its moments. There was some wonky and/or lazy excuses for maneuvers that made little sense to me, but there were also some clever executions of strategy or improvisation from either side. The fact that Ash got a leg up to use 2 Gigantamaxes, a Z-move, and a Mega-Evolution over the two Gigantamaxes that Leon got makes me feel a bit annoyed in thinking that people in and out of universe might claim Ash didn’t truly earn that victory. It also still makes me roll my eyes at Leon for him thinking he was hot enough shit to still win if Ash did that... but look where that got you Leon.
But the end of the match, the way it was presented, and the moments and emotions it elicited in me make up for a lot of those criticisms. Goes to show if you can stick the landing, it helps a lot. Could’ve done without the nursing bed flashback reveal. But, overall, nicely done.
I still think Cynthia vs. Ash was a better battle in its entirety. But I was more invested in that match, though this battle is very much rooted in a solid 2nd place in this tournament.
But Ash ain’t second! He’s first! Hooray for him!
Now, Goh’s plot aside, where do we go from here?
Honestly, I’m not sure. If any moment felt right to introduce a new protagonist to the anime, it would be now. Or maybe we could actually age up Ash and have him deal with some real, major threats as the World Champion. Who knows! I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

I've done some listening on and off (including lately) to the Animorphs podcast The Fandalite Academy, which I highly recommend to anyone interested in deep discussions of the Animorphs books. The podcasters are two siblings, both (I think) around their mid-20's and pursuing academic degrees in areas relevant to children and literature, and one of which runs a very impressive Animorphs blog here on Tumblr. (I'm not going to tag them here because I'd rather not get their attention and would prefer others keep this preference in mind if they want to reblog; I've very occasionally interacted with them over the years but unfortunately in a slightly head-butting way which doesn't reflect how much I overall admire their blog.)
There is one episode dedicated to each of the Animorphs books (including Megamorphs #1,2) up through book #20, each of which I've listened to at least once. I don't know why they didn't continue with the podcast after that; maybe life circumstances/responsibilities intervened, but I do hope they get back to it someday.
Apart from benefiting from an intricate memory of basically everything that happens in ~60 Animorphs novels (which is apparent also from the Tumblr blog), these podcast episodes are very educational for the listener, reflecting the perspective of enthusiastic students of child psychology and children's literature. A certain slant shows through in much of their focus and analyses which reflects some among the set of social values/views which characterize Tumblr and which I tend to find myself grinding against (e.g. generally young-and-very-online SJ-ish views that lead to conclusions mentioned without justification like "a 13-year-old boy liking to watch teenage girls in leotards is reflective of rape culture and should have been treated as Problematic", as well as Tumblr levels of children's-rights-ism manifested in readings of the book series that I consider frankly absurd). They often reach pretty far to latch onto a philosophical or literary concept that sometimes seems only very tangentially related to what is happening in one of the books, but I would rather a podcast that does this from time to time than one which strictly adheres to the literal plots and characterizations, which by themselves are not always actually all that deep (as much as I feel bad for saying this rather than holding as profound an appreciation for Animorphs as these podcasters do). A lot of the time, the analyses they dive into do help me to appreciate Animorphs on a deeper level and/or provide an insightful discussion that is quite relevant to a major plot point: as an example, I'll mention their incisive unpacking of the incoherence innate to the concept of the Chees' absolute nonviolence protocols in #10 (which goes on to play a major role in whichever books where the Chee later appear).
There is one thing that is very striking to me in this podcast, which is that the podcasters, who became considerably more deeply invested in Animorphs than I ever was (and that's saying quite a lot actually!) are too young to remember when the books were coming out. (In fact, at least one of them read the final Animorphs book first or second, I believe? Which makes me die a little inside.) This is present as sort of an undercurrent through the entire sequence of podcast episodes. It's surreal to me on more than one level: first of all, I'm still getting used to the fact that there's a whole generation of very well-developed adults distinctly younger than my generation, and secondly, so much of my experience with Animorphs (as with Harry Potter) was bound in the process of them coming out one by one. Dipping back into Animorphs now immediately gives me a blast of nostalgia for the late 90's which it's clear that the podcasters don't experience; they're always talking about the 90's as quite a foreign decade to them. This is a tangible case of people who have been passionate about the same work for similar reasons experiencing that passion in sharply different ways owing to the circumstances in which the work was consumed.
I don't mean to bring this up as a criticism of the podcasters, obviously, although I'm tempted to tease them a little for being very confused on, for instance, whether or not Megamorphs #1 came out between Animorphs #7 and #8: events from #7 are mentioned in MM#1 and events from MM#1 are mentioned in #8, and there's a list of release dates right on Wikipedia! I do think however that they could benefit (and perhaps are benefiting, away from the podcast let's say) from discussing Animorphs with a millennial who was lucky enough to be the exact right age for it during the years it was coming out, who was forced to read them in close to their chronological order, who remembers the state of the internet at the time, the dynamic between the fans and the author (K. A. Applegate) as the series was developing, who knows firsthand the culture contemporary to the stories, and so on. Complimenting their academic knowledge of 90's-era children's literature with someone else's direct knowledge of what it felt like to be growing up during the 90's would make for an excellent exchange, I think.

Thoughts on “King’s Tide”
We’re finally here. The finale of season 2. Had to spend a few days re-watching this episode because there was so much to unpack and dissect.  🤯
We start off the episode expanding on the fact that King can hear the thoughts of the Collector from the previous episode.
This was such a cute scene.😊 It’s understandable that everyone is stressed after last episode. After all, you do get “Hangry if you are Hungry.”
Tumblr media
Glad we finally get an explanation for where Amity’s nickname “Mittens” comes from. It’s cute.
“We shall wipe out all wild magic forever. Paradise awaits!”-I hate how the general public does not see this as an issue at all. Sometimes the people of the Boiling Isles surprise me. They make it too easy.
The character designs of all the other Coven Leaders are really cool. Especially the leader of Healing Coven.😲
Foreshadowing Point: The show reminds us that Eda can remove her hands in her conversation with Raine.
This scene makes me really sad. It really does display the significance of adolescence and the pains of growing up.
Tumblr media
I really want to know how Belos found out about the plan with Raine and Eda. Is there a rat or was it intuition? Both?🤔
We hadn’t seen the key in a while, but I knew the Titan Blood wasn’t enough to set the Collector free. There was literally only one drop left lol
“But you said we were friends. We pinky swore.”-Even though I can see why the Collector was imprisoned, it’s still pretty low of Belos to drag the Collector for this long to betray them this way. I felt bad.
“Have you as my right hand? I’d sooner cut off my whole arm.” “Go find a hole to wither away in.”-OUCH😬. I don’t even like Kikimora like that, but that was brutal. I wish we knew more about Kikimore and Belos’ relationship because this stings. You can say what you want about Kiki, but she was loyal to Belos and did everything she could to make amends for her mistakes.
From a villian’s standpoint, it makes sense why Belos would not release the Collector. It’s been shown that the Collector is very naïve and would most likely give up his knowledge of magic to anyone they favor. Belos is just trying to protect himself.🤷🏾‍♀️ Still very messed up though.
“Why did I make those things so powerful?”-Yeah, Alador why did you?😑
Terra’s grudge on Eda and Raine for 30 years is so petty. I hate how this plan was found out. It was really solid too.
Lowkey glad we got to see the Coven Heads fight. It’s a shame we did not get an episode dedicated to all of them.
I’m glad we got to have a final stand-off with Luz and Phillip. They are technically both in the same situation, but have different perspectives due to their experiences in the Boiling Isles.
Good and quick thinking on Luz for using the “fish-out of water” idea on Phillip. Great way to make him think that he will be at a disadvantage in the Human world.👌🏾
Branding him was an excellent idea too
Phillip’s transformation is kind of cool, I can’t lie.
RAiNE, BeLoS Is GiViNg Us PaRaDiSe, RiGhT? 🙃🙃😐
If I was Raine, I wouldn’t have even responded lol
I really like it when the show was switching from King’s perspective to the general perspective of the show. The show could have easily went back to Amity, Willow, Gus and Hunter normally, but they wanted to show the severity of the situation from King’s eyes. Fantastic!!
It also hints at King’s impending transformation
Tumblr media
I really appreciate how Luz was still pleading with Belos to stop the spell even though everything was going to hell. It was crunch time and she was still trying to compromise with a villain. A lot of people may find that annoying, but I find that quite admirable😊
The rest of team LAAWH (plus king) has arrived. I had to add Hunter in the team name somehow 🙃
Tumblr media
“But I was always listening.”-Phillip should have done a better job of sound proofing his chambers lol. Maybe then Kikimora wouldn’t have been an asset to King.
“Hunter, why are you hurting me? I only wanted to help you.”-Again with the manipulation.😡Also, the fact that he’s doing this to an altered version of his dead brother makes this whole situation ten times worse and makes me sick. Screw you Belos.☝🏾
I wonder if we will learn more about how Flapjack is connected to Caleb in the next season. We really do need that backstory montage between Phillip and Caleb, even though we already know a decent amount of their story already.
“You look like that bully who put me in here.”-Welp this does not bode well for King. But shoutout to King’s dad for not only trapping the Collector, but making sure that if the Collector is found, that he would not be able to identify King. That’s a parent!
Eda’s skills of deception have really rubbed off on King in the past few years. Even though it wouldn’t be that hard to lie to the Collector😂
This scene was really well done. I loved the colors
Tumblr media
Raine is such a good character. They are so honorable. Just let Raine and Eda be happy.
Also Eda lost a hand😓. First, she’s cursed, then she can’t perform magic and now she lost an appendage. EDA!!!😭
Tumblr media
This show can be so real sometimes. It shows you that despite how talented the main group is, they are still not good enough to beat Belos. It doesn’t use “The Power of Friendship” message when the show gets really serious and I appreciate that. They are TEENAGES for goodness sakes! They still need more training.
The Collector’s physical introduction is perfect. From the character design, to the dialogue to even the OST. It’s like the writers took all the great things about the show and put into this one character and I love it.
Also this scene right here-10/10!👏🏾
Tumblr media
The fact that we see the main crew’s reaction to the introduction of the closest thing considered a god in this series compared with the collector’s childlike nature is💯💯👌🏾👌🏾
Poor Hunter😭He can’t come up with a one-liner to say after a traumatic experience. I don’t blame him.
“Okay. Boop!”-And just like that the Day of Unity is over 😂😂
This is bad. This is very, very bad!
Tumblr media
The Collector is very reason why the quote “Great Power, requires great responsibility” was created.-Oof 😓
Looks like Belos is still going to be a problem for Hunter next season because some of his residue got on Hunter 🤢
I really like how Hunter was the one to open the door to the Human Realm. Very symbolic for a lot of things👌🏾
“It’s human rain, it’s okay!”-Appreciate the hesitation of everyone before Gus says that because the Boiling Isles is highkey wild lol.
“Luz, I’m so happy, I had you as a big sister.” >﹏<
This isn’t fair to King. But he has to take responsibility for his actions: Releasing a God. Even though he did this for the greater good, it ultimately lead to a more severe problem. I wish it didn’t have to be this way.😢
Nor is it fair to Luz. She doesn’t get the satisfaction of knowing that her new found family, Eda and King, are safe after this event. This show can be  such a tragedy at times.
The chills I got from this frame alone.😣 The sense of despair from Gus, the shock radiating from on Luz’s expression and the looks of uncertainty on Amity, Hunter and Willow’s faces screams hopelessness. Combined with the fact they appear on Earth on a stormy night depicts the severity of the situation that they are in.
Tumblr media
LOL at the shout out to Amphibia tho 😄
The last scene of the episode. Luz tearing up before the end of the episode just shows that she is one the verge of a breakdown. Our girl has been through a lot of trauma😭😭
Tumblr media
Camila is going to have her hands full with not only one teenager, but other four other kids in the house (plus Vee). Titan have mercy on her soul. JK 😂😂. But with the next season, I expect a lot healing to occur for our characters or some healing to have already occurred before we see these characters again because this was a lot.
And there you have it. Season 2 is finally over and the dreadful hiatus begins again. *sigh*  And mostly likely the last one we will be experiencing too *groan*
Expectations for Season 3 (next 3 1-hour specials): I anticipate a time-skip of some sort because starting off right of the bat might not give the characters enough time to unpack the situation. I expect to see Amity, Hunter, Willow and Gus getting used to the human world (very excited for this) and feeling like outsiders just like Luz did on the Boiling Isles. Finally, I hope for a satisfying ending. It does suck how this show had its wings clipped before it could truly soar and maintain massive succes, but I trust in Dana and everyone else working on the show that they will end this story off right. This is a captivating story with great characters.
This season has been a ride and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for these characters. Until then, see you guys at the beginning of season 3. It’s gonna be great!✌🏾

October 2nd Day 16 Interview with the Vampire Episodes 1 & 2
Tumblr media
I thought only ep 1 one would drop but we got 2
Holy Mother forking shirt balls
It's so gay
It's so gay
There's so much to unpack um a list???
It's RICH IT's SO RICH
disclaimer I have read some anne rice novels but not this particular series so whilst i do know her vibe i do not know the text so this won't be an assessment of her fidelity to the text but it will be what i think she would like for an adaptation cause i have read some of her other shit
gay - of fucking course she wants the gay shit
People (this hell site) say that a lot but there is actual gay relationship and actual gay sex- sex doesn't necessitate a relationship but this is sexy vampire shit so excessive sex and violence comes with the territory and there isn't any weak ass cut aways either there is also plenty domestic gay because it's a whole real (toxic) relationship
and it's glorious if you are into that kind of thing
(this tumblr is into that kind of thing)
there's even solid BI pride in there whilst they do not say the words as it is back in the oldy days and hasn't been invented yet you have a very clear derisive
"what are you half queer?"
and a very haughty response
"I'm non-discriminating" *fuck you if you have something to say about it*
the time frame makes for conversations or race and sexuality that are ...well tread but not in a black n white sense
there's true moments of gore and blood
there's PASSION - remember back in the day when they cast not for looks but for chemistry
they did both honey those two are enthralling on screen
it does start with louis looking back for the reporter from the start
i said RICH - the tone, the drama (Bridgeton levels of prose and fashion and longing and even a lil food) not quite Hannibal rich because the cinematography there is off the charts and that requires like MONEY and HD cameras n shit amc don't got that money i'm sure but in terms of the vibe YEA it's fucking luxurious
it doesn't shy away from digging into how absolutely fucked the situation is fucked and toxic peak toxicity
our interviewer with 2022 perspective gives us critiques (from a white man perspective) of how fucked shit is -as does loius with hindsight
uh holy f-somebody give jacob (our louis) an award for the end scene of episode one alone ACT TING baby ACT TING
lordt what else is there to say i appreciate that is delves into louis family life
1 monologue some brief throw away lines about organized religion
mental health is touched on- i suspect it will continue judging by the first two episodes
the intersection of race and money and gender the limitations of all three
i just-
every week will be a LONG week waiting for another episode like HBO long
FYI It's already be renewed for season two BEFORE it aired if that gives you an indication

14.12 Final Thoughts
And BOY do I have a lot of ‘em. There were three (3!) important Sam conversations, so buckle up, gents.
Here’s the thing. Nick is FASCINATING to me, but ONLY insofar as Sam interacts with him. It’s like someone on the writing team heard me say just the first part of that sentence and then stopped listening.
Nick clearly missing Lucifer in a fucked-up way, choosing him over his own wife, would be sooooo much cooler if Sam had to interact with that hot mess, my god can you imagine. That’s yet another on the list of missed-Nick-opportunities, and yes, I’m keeping a list. It’s long.
(I wonder if before Nick went full-psycho, he considered asking Sam if he ever felt that way? Nick knows just one (1) other person who’s gone through what he has. Personally, I’d be curious.)
I’m amazed how many times Donatello has evaded death. Score another point for tenure, I guess.
Sam’s starting salvo after Dean’s nightmare comes with no sugarcoating whatsoever. His strategy seems to be, “yeah, we’ve all been through Hell, you’re quite sure you’re ready to sign up for another round?”
Sam’s nominally cooperating with Dean’s plan, but he’s being as unapologetically passive-aggressive about it as possible, at every possible opportunity. Which I frankly adore. You can taste his anger building through the whole episode.
Dean’s been slowly coming round to s1 Sam’s point of view on John’s parenting. I love that they’re bringing this up. Sam, on the other hand, really doesn’t care. He’s much more able and willing to brush all of that aside in s14 than he was in s1, to the point where Dean bringing it up just makes him… exhausted. (I discussed this more back in this post.)
Dean’s choice of deathbed amends is one that’s 15+ years back. And I do think that it’s a struggle for Dean to admit that he’s ever been anything but a loyal protector of Sam; even if he knows wasn’t perfect, it’s important to him to insist that he’s always been trying his best, as the most crucial pillar of his identity as a righteous defender. But to make it about their childhood… well, it’s a ~much safer topic than say, Gadreel. It’s something Dean’s got confidence Sam will brush off. It’s also something that Dean’s been leading into for awhile—undoing John’s way of doing things while keeping his own head still firmly planted in the family narrative.
Sam’s been spending this season having his history spat back in his face through a funhouse mirror. Despite that, I wasn’t necessarily expecting a breaking point, but DAMN! am I happy to get one!
It makes a ton of sense that THIS would be the breaking point, of course: an episode of towing what is essentially Dean’s Cage behind the car. The layers of history and pain and fear behind that fate, the amount of time Sam’s spent this season dealing with alt!Michael and not!Lucifer, and Dean’s latest plan being so perfectly, perfectly on-the-nose? In trying to imagine late-seasons Sam getting properly FURIOUS at Dean, this situation is one of the only ones that would just about do it. It’s delicious.
I have enough thoughts about their final confrontation that I’ll probably make a different post before I write (more of) an essay, but I’ll just say now that I think Sam’s strained desperation here, the punch, the appeal to Betrayal of Family Values, the violence with which he uses an emotional outburst as a persuasion tactic—it all feels a lot more like a Dean-strategy than a Sam-strategy. Which is super interesting to me.

72 for Geralt/Jaskier?
I meant to post this a lot earlier... sorry about the wait, nonnie. I hope you like it anyway. I'm not sure how it came out in the end after I agonised over this for the past couple of days, but it was fun going back to my Geraskier roots.
Masterlist
Pairing: Geralt x Jaskier
Prompt 72: Character A has a secret. Character B does whatever they can to find out what it is. When they find out, they wish they hadn't.
Warnings: brief angsty episode, mention of Geralt's traumatic childhood
Also, I love that art! Holy Shit!? So of course this had to feature before the fic <3
Tumblr media
Travelling with Jaskier had its downfalls.
For one, the bard talks a lot. He never stops, not even in his sleep, and that would drive any man insane if you ask Geralt. He listens to Jaskier waffling about poetry all day, every day, he doesn’t have to endure a lecture on the benefits of iambic pentameters when he’s trying to fall asleep, thank you very much. Jaskier also likes to complain about every little thing that causes him discomfort, which when they’re on the path, ranges from fly bites all the way to sore feet. Travelling with a human also means that they travel considerably slower, unless they’re both riding on top of Roach, but Geralt doesn’t like putting his best girl under that kind of strain very often.
For all of Jaskier’s flaws, Geralt would hate to have to separate from his bard. At least, when Jaskier is close by, Geralt can keep an eye on him and make sure Jaskier doesn’t get himself into any unnecessary trouble. Having Jaskier travel with him gives Geralt peace of mind. He appreciates the singing as well, even if he could stand to tell Jaskier this a bit more often. Geralt deems that his bard’s ego is plenty inflated without Geralt making it worse. Not to mention that life always seems a little bit brighter when Jaskier is around, and the nights are a little less lonely as Geralt gets to pull his bard close and fall asleep to the sound of his beating heart. Knowing that Jaskier is safe is the only thing that lets Geralt sleep peacefully at night.
You’d think that after nearly two decades of knowing his bard, Geralt would have figured out Jaskier’s secret by now. Geralt is, of course, referring to Jaskier’s near supernatural ability to always come up with coin when he and Geralt need it most urgently. Geralt has no idea how the bard does it - his songs are popular, granted, and on a good night Jaskier makes enough to buy a nice room for the night and the better pieces of meat from the kitchen. Still, being a bard doesn’t pay that well, not even if you were as famous as Jaskier. Just last week, Geralt’s horse and most of his belonging were stolen by bandits, leaving Geralt travelling on foot and too poor to afford to buy a new horse. Two days later, Jaskier came trotting up to their camp atop a gorgeous mare, looking mighty pleased with himself but refusing to tell Geralt how he managed to afford to pay for the horse.
“Would you believe me if I told you I stole her, Geralt, my dear?”
“Not in a million years,” Geralt admitted deadpan, pulling an offended squawk from his songbird.
“Just because I’m a bard you don’t think I can steal a horse?”
“I don’t think you could ever steal a horse because you’re as stealthy as the proverbial bull in the porcelain shop.”
It’s not just the horse, though. Geralt’s armour needed replacing and good armour doesn’’t come cheaply. Geralt doesn’t hire the services of just any blacksmith or armourer to craft his weapons and protective gear. He has his regular suppliers, the ones he always goes back to because he knows that their work is reliable and of the highest quality. And even though these people know Geralt by now, even offer him a friends and family discount on occasion, their wares still come at a hefty price. Geralt, as it turns out, didn’t have the coin to replace his armour for a few months. He desperately needed new boots, though. A new pair of breeches wouldn’t hurt either, and his silver sword broke in half whilst fighting a particularly vicious griffin a few weeks back.
Geralt didn’t even mention all of this to Jaskier. That didn’t stop the bard from going ahead and commissioning a brand new suit of armour, new silver and steel swords, as well as a few casual clothes for Geralt to wear on the warmer summer days. All of this must have cost an arm, a leg and a fucking lung, and yet Jaskier acted like he didn’t just break the bank all for Geralt’s benefit. He didn’t even get anything for himself and that realisation had Geralt feeling slightly embarrassed about the gesture.
“You don’t have to buy me all this stuff, Jask.”
“I know that, dearest,” Jaskier assured him, eyes soft and an easy smile playing on his lips, “but I wanted to. Only the best for you, my sweet witcher.”
The mystery of where Jaskier managed to find the coin to pay for all this remains unsolved, despite Geralt’s questioning. Well, if Jaskier won’t outright tell him, then Geralt will just have to investigate the matter by himself.
"Where the fuck did you get your hand on all the coin to pay for all this?" Geralt asks one evening, blunt and straight to the point. There was probably a kinder and gentler way to ask this, but after spending weeks mulling over Jaskier's sudden new-found fortune, Geralt has lost the little patience he possessed in the matter. Jaskier, on the other hand, looks perfectly unperturbed.
"From the bank," he offers simply as he sprinkles expensive herbs over the hare Geralt caught earlier that evening, "you know, where people deposit their valuables? I know you witchers don't believe in bank accounts, savings and interests, but-"
"Where does the coin come from?" Geralt interrupts, hissing those words through clenched teeth.
"Why, my inheritance."
Geralt stares for a long while. It takes his brain several seconds to catch up to what Jaskier is telling him, and another few seconds to make sense of the words. Inheritance?
"What inheritance?"
"Well, when my father passed away he left me and my siblings a share of his wealth. That's how inheritance works. Say, pass me my satchel my dear, I think I have some more spices in there."
Geralt wordlessly hands Jaskier his satchel, still trying to process this new discovery. Come to think of it, Geralt knows precious little about Jaskier's family. Sure, that's probably on him for never asking, but Geralt has grown so used to Jaskier oversharing every aspect of his life that he never needed to ask his bard anything. Jaskier just… never talked about his family. Or his childhood, or his upbringing. His life story seems to always begin when he was a student at Oxenfurt.
Geralt is growing curiouser by the minute.
"When did your father pass?"
"Oh? Uh… good question. Maybe a few years after I went to Oxenfurt? I'm not sure. I received a letter from the bank notifying me that a share of my father's wealth was deposited in my account."
Geralt frowns. "You never went back to find out what happened?"
"No."
Well, that's an oddly abrupt response, and Jaskier doesn't seem like he's got anything to say on the matter. Which only makes Geralt feel more curious about the whole thing.
"Why not?"
"Geralt…" Jaskier heaves a sigh before putting on a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes, too tense to be genuine. "My father and I didn't get along. I felt no need to go mourn him with the rest of my noble family in Lettenhove when he passed. That's it. That's all there's to it. I was not a good enough man to refuse my share of the inheritance, either, despite my non-existent relationship with him."
That's a lot to unpack. Geralt always assumed that Jaskier had a good childhood. Then again, he would think that, wouldn't he, considering Geralt spent his own childhood being tortured by magnanimous and sadistic mages. Where most children got to spend time outside helping out in the fields or playing with their friends, Geralt was put through drill after drill, after drill… until he was physically unable to walk so much his muscles hurt.
"Wait… did you say your noble family?"
"Hm?"
"In Lettenhove… there's nothing in Lettenhove. Only the Viscount and his family live there on a large esta-" Geralt's mouth clicks shut as realisation dawns on him. "Your father was the Viscount of Lettenhove?"
"Yes. And since I'm the oldest, after he died that title passed onto me. But I much prefer being a bard, so I graciously devolved my duties to my younger brother, who now manages the estate. Are we done with this conversation?"
"I didn't mean to make you mad…"
Geralt watches Jaskier stop dead in his tracks, his shoulders briefly tensing at those words, before exhaling loudly through his nose. Jaskier anxiously rubs the back of his neck as he straightens up and offers Geralt a sheepish smile, that one warmer and softer than the previous one.
"Sorry, dear heart. I didn't mean to be so short with you. It's just… well, there's a reason I don't bring up my family all that much."
"Hm." Geralt gently taps the spot next to him on his bedroll, and Jaskier doesn't have to be told twice. Soon, Geralt has one arm wound tightly around Jaskier's shoulders. Not quite a hug, but the intention is there all the same, and Jaskier eagerly melts in the embrace. "I shouldn't have insisted. I'm sorry."
"Don't apologise. You did nothing wrong." Jaskier nuzzles the crook of Geralt's neck sweetly before depositing a featherlight kiss just over his pulse point. "Do you want to ask me anything?"
Geralt ponders over that question far too long before whispering an answer in the air pocket between them.
"Did he hurt you?"
Jaskier hesitates.
"Not physically, no. He didn't approve of my aspirations and choices. He didn't support me. I suppose it hurt a little when he didn't see me away to Oxenfurt at the age of 15, but he never raised a hand on me."
"Hm." Good, Geralt thinks. No child should ever have to suffer at the hand of an adult. Geralt earned plenty a beating at Kaer Morhen, some justified and others not so much. Just because he went through this doesn't mean he condones it.
"At least I get to spend his money on someone I love," Jaskier offers softly, eyes as blue as the deepest ocean glancing up at Geralt through dark lashes, “That, at least, the old man can’t take away from me.”
A happy little rumble bubbles up Geralt's chest, despite the blush gracing his cheeks.
"I never thanked you for the gifts." Geralt blushes a deeper shade of red at the realisation. "Sorry. It's been a long year."
"Well, good thing we're heading North soon then, hm?" Jaskier straightens up so he can cradle Geralt's face in his lute-calloused hands. Their eyes meet then, amber seeking out blue, and Geralt thinks that he must be the luckiest son of a bitch in all the Continent.
"Yes," he agrees in a whisper, tilting his face to place a kiss on the inside of Jaskier's wrist, "good thing, indeed."

With Digimon Ghost Game starting, I thought about how different it is from previous Digimon series, though it's still undoubtedly Digimon... and then I realized all Digimon series are like that. So I wonder, what do you think sets each Digimon series apart from the rest?
I think both Ghost Game but also the reboot have been a wake-up call for people in terms of realizing that likes, dislikes, and tastes are subjective, and I think it's especially important in terms of this fanbase that is so obsessed with this idea you can objectively rank things by quality -- especially when each series is often deliberately trying to have its own identity, so it's arguably apples and oranges -- and forcing this idea of what's Good and Not Good on everyone else (especially when there's a nasty double standard phenomenon where Adventure and often Tamers get to be so impervious to criticism that people conveniently forget they're perfectly capable of being scrutinized for a lot of things they're weaker in). Very frustrating to see everyone who likes less popular series treated as if they have to accept that they like a "badly written series" for some things and everything else is a guilty pleasure, which I find to be incredibly dumb.
The most important take-home here is that the fact each series has its own identity is always going to be the main factor in what makes it "good" or not to you, not some arbitrary bar of comparison that's based on some narrow-minded view of "good writing" (which is usually unreasonably based on Adventure). For instance, the reason why 02 is so important to me is because (see below), to me, it has the highest amount of meaningful, important life lessons and themes that it wanted its audience to remember, to the point that I frankly do not care about where the plot goes in comparison. That may not be the case for everyone else, and that's fine, but should my tastes be called unreasonable for that? I think we're also coming to realize that because of Adventure (and kind of 02)'s precedent, so many people have been judging series purely by how intimate their individual character development style is, but this is unfair because Adventure and 02's ridiculous level of character depth to psychological detail is extremely unusual and unrealistic to expect of others; Adventure and 02 only achieved this by practically considering the plot utterly subservient to its character arcs, and it's arguably why they have some of the weakest "plots" in this franchise. It's so bizarre that I can see character development in other Digimon series that outstrips even most kids' anime on the market, but it's not as much as Adventure's so apparently it's bad. And, moreover, as it turns out, some people have priorities other than characterization; just because Adventure had that as its strength doesn't mean that's the only thing anyone should care about. Is the plot fun? Is there a meaningful message besides characters (also important to me)? Do you vibe with the tone being dark, or being silly? How much do you care about resourceful usage of Digimon lore? That kind of thing. Everyone is different, so that's why everyone has their own priorities. If you’re someone who prefers darker content, you may not realize that writing good and well-timed comedy is actually a very, very difficult task, especially when said comedy simultaneously has meaning (in comparison, it’s surprisingly easy to write “dark” but shallow content).
I think it's fair to like every Digimon series for its own thing, depending on your personal tastes. I can't speak for everyone, but my impressions are that it has to do with the following:
Adventure: Significantly easier to understand than 02 due to its more straightforward plot, and focus on individual character development ("individualism" being a strong point here). In terms of characters, it goes a lot into some very real social problems (the divorce around the Ishida and Takaishi families and the pressures surrounding Jou, for instance) in a very realistic manner. Also, it has that sense of mystique and absurdism to the Digital World that's both whimsical but also mysterious, and while 02 has it too, Adventure's the isekai story that has it the most.
02: The first is its focus on the importance of human relationships and the compelling group dynamic unparalleled in this franchise, and the second is its important themes and life lessons that I think are some of the strongest in said franchise. I have a whole tag for the ridiculous amount of nuance packed into every detail and dialogue line for this series, and I think every time I've rewatched an episode I've learned something new about it because there are so many things that clearly wanted to be said in each line. The entire series is basically an unpacking of the feelings of insidious self-hatred and the crushing feeling of being subject to society's expectations, and ones that are so deep-seated that you often don’t even have a single answer to how to unpack it (for instance, Miyako hardly has a tragic single event in her backstory, but she says and does a lot of things that'll be painfully familiar to those who have experienced chronic anxiety). Almost every plot point can be said to connect to each character arc in some way, and the mantras for appreciating and treasuring your own life and living life the way you will make this, in my opinion, the strongest series in terms of speaking to those who struggle with this kind of existential crisis for reasons of depression or otherwise. (Oops, I think I went too passionate about this; my biases are obvious...)
Tamers: I think it forms an interesting study and unpacking of the kinds of things you take for granted in Digimon or the monster-collecting genre in general, and an examination of how they'd work in a real-world context (although 02 had a focus on daily life, it didn't quite merge the Digimon and the real world factors until very late in the series). Also, probably the second highest on "hard sci-fi" (the only one that outstrips it is probably Appmon, but Appmon has a very different, more simplified take on it).
Frontier: A series that lies somewhere between Adventure's scale of individualism and 02's scale of group dynamic, and one more discussing the feeling of having your heart hardened from being an outcast, and what it takes to accept the idea of opening yourself up to others again. Recommended for those who like transforming hero and magical girl stories, too. From the Digimon perspective, also the one with the most detailed and consistent Digital World mythos.
Savers: I think this is the series that most drives home "life is complicated" (i.e. there isn't a single mastermind behind everything) in the most tasteful manner, because while it drives home the point that you can't just simplify everything into a good side and a bad side, some bad things really are evil (hi, Kurata), and it doesn't change the fact that everyone's responsible for cleaning up the fallout. The portrayal of the evils of government bureaucracy is probably the most realistic out of any of these series.
Xros Wars: For those who like fun, most of all! For those who like seeing Digimon finally get more of the spotlight and individuality since so much of it had been geared and biased towards the humans prior to this. For those who really like worldbuilding, and, after all, this is called Xros Wars, so it's interesting to see shakeups on the usual formulas in the form of the different factions and their priorities. Hunters is very different in tone, but I do think they have some of these aspects in common; that said, it being closer to having single partnerships brings it a bit closer in line to conventional Digimon partnerships, and it also has more of a picture of daily life. Also, as much as Tagiru is probably your-mileage-may-vary since he's not exactly a very nice kid (I get it if you don't vibe with that), which may also rub those hoping for not nice kids to become nice the wrong way, I do have to say I find him to be one of the funniest characters in this entire franchise, and you'd be surprised how hard good comedy is to write.
Appmon: Probably one of the strongest theme narratives besides 02, since it has a very clear and obvious theme about the importance of kindness in a world where technology is dominating and we're almost encouraged to strip the feelings out of everything. (Bonus for more straightforward plot than Adventure or 02 while still retaining a lot of its elements in terms of how to characterize them.) Also the first series to be speculative about the near future instead of taking place around the time it airs, and it's very obvious it wants to provide important and necessary commentary about what we need to do in the incoming era, especially as a lot of what it has to say becomes increasingly relevant.
Reboot: For those who like Digimon mythos and null canon -- this is probably the only series to show it off in this level of detail -- and the kind of cool action fights that would usually be saved for the climax in prior series (and animated in much more intimate detail with battle choreography than prior series would have). There are a lot of people into this franchise who felt like it genuinely was not making enough use of its Digimon roster and its potential because it kept going back to the old standbys (especially Adventure-based ones), so it was a huge relief for that crowd to see attention finally being paid.

Chris: “23 bachelors started in the competition to win a beautiful girl’s heart, but week by week they had to say goodbye to their chance at love. Based of first impressions 5 of them didn’t even unpack their bags and get settled at the guest house. Jisung, Chenle, Sungchan, Taeil and Yangyang, how did it feel to be sent back right in the first night?”
Chenle: “I was quite sad actually because I felt like there wasn’t even a chance to prove myself.”
Yangyang: “Yeah, there wasn’t enough time to really talk to Y/N and present ourselves.”
Sungchan: “I agree, but on the other hand I feel like I personally could’ve done more that night.”
Taeil: “I kinda feel the same, maybe if I had approached her instead of just chilling around I could’ve stayed a little longer.”
Jisung: “But it was really intimidating with so many people in the room.”
Chris: “It must be hard to fight for attention in a room full of men all with the same objective. In the beginning it really comes down to who’s able to be memorable and who’s not. Even though you were only in the house for a few hours, was it a good experience?”
Yangyang: “I wouldn’t say good, maybe interesting is the right work.”
Taeil: “Definitely interesting.”
Jisung: “Also made me realise that this is not how I’d want to meet my future wife.”
Chenle: “Yeah, I feel like I’d prefer something more traditional.”
Sungchan: “But it was still interesting, for sure.”
Chris: “It’s never a wasted experience right? Thank you for joining us tonight.”
Everybody claps and the five boys smile and bow.
Chris: “After that first night 18 of these men settled in the guest house and got ready to start going on dates with our bachelorette. 2 of them were even lucky even to have an individual date but one of them didn’t end as they expected it. Lucas, why don’t you come and join me?”
Everybody cheers as Lucas gets up and sits on the chair next to Chris.
Chris: “So Lucas, Y/N choose you for one of the first one-on-one dates of the season and she even picked you up to take you to the beach. How were you feeling in the beginning?”
Lucas: “Oh Chris, I was so excited. I did not expect her to pick me up and we had so much fun on the ride, just singing and laughing. It was really cool. And when we got to the beach I was having a really good time with her. She’s an amazing girl and I felt like that was a good start to possibly build something in the future.”
Chris: “It did seem like you two were having a lot of fun until you were telling her a story that seemed a little bit familiar right?”
Lucas: “That really caught me off guard, but when she started to say things about Ahreum it all started to make sense.”
Chris: “Yes because actually the first time Y/N saw you she said you looked familiar.”
Lucas: “I know! But back then I didn’t think too much about it because I was so excited for the journey ahead. To be honest I had only seen her a few times before and she has changed a bit over the years so I didn’t even think to connect her to my past.”
Chris: “It was really a surprise to all of us. And then she left you at the restaurant and went back to the mansion. What was going through your head?”
Lucas: “Honestly I think my head was completely blank, I didn’t even know what to think, I only started to reflect on things once I got back to the guest house. Everybody kept asking me how the date went and I didn’t know what to say.”
Chris: “The following day, Y/N called you to the mansion to discuss the situation, were you expecting to go home when you went there?”
Lucas: “I kind of was, even if we had decided to give it a chance and see how things went, Ahreum would always be in the back of our heads and I would end up still going home.”
Chris: “Speaking of Ahreum, a lot of the fans are really curious, did you have the chance to meet her once you were out of the show?”
Lucas: “Actually… Yes.”
There’s a lot of whistles and cheers around the room.
Lucas: “When I left I couldn’t stop thinking about her because we did leave things unfinished back then when I left the country so I thought we should at least sit down and talk. So I called her and she agreed to meet and it was a very pleasant conversation.”
Chris: “That is really amazing! Do you two still keep in touch?”
Lucas: “We have. In fact, we decided to give us another change so we are now officially back together!”
Chris: “Wow! What an unexpected turn of events! I think everybody will be very happy to hear about it. How did Y/N react to those news?”
Lucas: “She was genuinely very happy for us, she’s been really supportive of our relationship and it’s really good that I got a very good friend like her out of this experience.”
Chris: “Well Lucas, I am very happy to hear things worked out for you and I wish you two all the best.”
Lucas: “Thank you, Chris.”
Everybody claps as Lucas gets up and returns to his seat.
Chris: “But Lucas was not the only one leaving after the first week. After a racy soccer match we said goodbye to 4 more bachelors. Ten, Mark, Jungwoo and Winwin, what did you feel when you didn’t hear your name being called?”
Ten: “Oh I was so sad! I was having so much fun!”
Jungwoo: “Yeah it was really fun to get to know Y/N.”
Mark: “But we knew we couldn’t all stay, someone had to go.”
Winwin: “I had a feeling it would be me.”
Chris: “Why did you think that Winwin?”
Winwin: “I’m a more quiet guy and with so many big personalities I’d end up fading into the background.”
Chris: “I can see how it can get overwhelming to be surrounded by so much competition.”
Jungwoo: “Sometimes even if you try your best to stand out it isn’t enough.”
Mark: “There was always someone who shined a little bit more.”
Ten: “You can only do so much. But it was fun!”
The others nod in agreement.
Chris: “Well, I’m glad you at least had a good time.”
Everybody claps for the 4 boys.
Chris: “On the second week we had two more individual dates and in the group date the guys met Ahreum to shoot a Charity Calendar. Kun you didn’t seem to have a good time there, what happened?”
Kun: “Ah… When we were in the dressing room getting ready I looked around and everybody seemed to have amazing costumes and I thought mine was just terrible. At the time I was really upset but now looking back at the footage I realise I exaggerated on my reaction, I should’ve just had fun with it.”
Chris: “Y/N surely didn’t appreciate your attitude, do you think there’s something you could’ve done to stay?”
Kun: “She asked me why I was so upset and I should’ve just been honest about it, I thought that not talking about it would just make the situation go away but after talking to her at the cocktail party after I realised I should’ve just said something and maybe I would’ve gotten another chance. But we’ll never know now!”
Chris: “That’s why I always told you guys to just enjoy and make the most out of every situation. Xiaojun, you were also eliminated that week, why do you think that happened?”
Xiaojun: “I think there was just lack of investment from my side. At the time I didn’t notice but like Kun was saying, after you see yourself on the screen you understand what you could’ve done better.”
Chris: “Do you feel like you were holding back?”
Xiaojun: “I wouldn’t say holding back, it was more me not creating situations where we could’ve maybe bonding a little bit more. And I do regret that.”
Chris: “Sometimes it’s not about what you did but what you didn’t do. Thank you for sharing.”
Claps fill the room.
Chris: “The following week we saw one of the most heartbreaking eliminations of the season on an individual date. Shotaro, the fans were devastated to see you go. When you went on the date did you have any idea you wouldn’t be coming back to the guest house?”
Shotaro: “Yes and no. I had a lot of fun on the date and I really like her but I knew I wasn’t at the same level as many of the other contestants, they’re such amazing guys.”
Chris: “Do you think feeling that way sabotaged your stay?”
Shotaro: “Not really. I knew I would eventually go home and I’m happy Y/N took the time to actually talk to me alone and explain what she felt, I really appreciated it.”
Chris: “Even though you weren’t destined for love, she seemed interested in keeping a friendship with you, is that in your plans?”
Shotaro: “Oh definitely! We actually have talked a few times after the shooting and she even promised to make me the godfather of one of her future kids!”
Chris: “Wow, that’s really amazing Shotaro! I’m sure the fans will be happy to know you two haven’t given up on the beautiful friendship we saw you construct. Now, by the end of the week we said goodbye to one more bachelor that left with a warning. Doyoung, come on up and join me!”
Doyoung gets up to sit next to Chris as the other guys look at each other.
Chris: “Doyoung, before you left the mansion after your elimination you told Y/N something that left her shook. She tried to ignore it at first but then she decided to confront the bachelors as you revealed some was not being honest and already had a girlfriend back home. Because we never got a real explanation what can you tell us about this?”
Doyoung: “I received some hate after those episodes aired and a lot of people said I only did that because I was upset that I was going home. While that may have been true, I did not lie. I heard some conversations and I thought Y/N should know because it was not fair that this person kept being in the competition and possibly break her heart.”
Chris: “So you’re saying the objective of your message was to help Y/N and not hurt her?”
Doyoung: “Absolutely.”
Chris: “So why not let her know who this person was and just leave it vague? I think that’s what made a lot of people doubt the truthfulness of you words.”
Doyoung: “I thought I should give that person the opportunity to come clean, but I guess he never did.”
Chris: “Ok, let’s clarify things then. Did you actually hear someone say they had a girlfriend?”
Doyoung: “I didn’t hear those exact words but I understood from the context.”
Chris: “You didn’t hear those exact words? So how come you assumed that’s what the person meant with whatever they said?”
Doyoung: “Now that we’re all here, I think we should finally give time for that person to come forward and clear things out. Johnny, care to say something?”
Gasps are heard from everywhere, including Chris. Johnny simply lowers his gaze and chuckles, shaking his head.
Chris: “I think I can speak for everyone when I say we were not expecting this. Johnny did you have a girlfriend when you joined this competition.”
Johnny: “I didn’t, Chris.”
Doyoung: “Well that’s not what I heard.”
Johnny: “Well maybe you shouldn’t have been hearing half conversation behind the door and assume things without asking people first.”
Chris: “Ok, now I’m really confused. Johnny what was the conversation about?”
Johnny: “Well, right in the first week there was this one night everybody had gone to bed but me and Ten stayed outside for a little longer. We were getting to know each other and we ended up talking about past relationships and if Doyoung really cared to know the truth he would’ve understand that I just told Ten that I had been though a break up right before I decided to apply for this.”
Doyoung: “But I heard you say you still had feelings for this person, isn’t that the same thing?”
Johnny: “I’ll always have feelings for my ex-girlfriend but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t ready to move on. And I was.”
Chris: “But wasn’t it too soon to enter a show to find love right after you got out of a relationship?”
Johnny: “At the time I didn’t think so and I still don’t. I went into the show ready to fall in love again and I felt like I was walking to that.”
Chris: “Why didn’t you had this conversation with Y/N at the time when you saw how hurt she was with all of this?”
Johnny: “Honestly I didn’t think Doyoung was talking about me. Firstly because he wasn’t there and secondly because I didn’t have a girlfriend and I never said I did.”
Chris: “But later on when you were eliminated you told her not to worry about the girlfriend situation anymore. Had you put the pieces together by then?”
Johnny: “As you can imagine, around that time that’s all we talked about at the guest house and I realised it couldn’t be anything else.”
Chris: “Did any of this weighted on your decision not to accept the rose on your individual date later on?”
Johnny: “A little bit I have to admit. I really felt like I was starting to fall in love with Y/N but I knew she didn’t feel the same thing for me.”
Chris: “So you decided to go home by yourself before she sent you packing?”
Johnny: “I was just trying to save her a harder decision by the end of the week, that’s all. I never meant to hurt her in anyway, but I also didn’t wanted to hurt myself.”
Chris: “So going back on the girlfriend/ex-girlfriend situation, after you left the show did you re-connect with this person?”
Johnny: “Actually no. Our relationship was more than solved in my head and I don’t feel like there’s anything else to be said.”
Chris: “Doyoung, hearing Johnny’s explanation what do you think about all this?”
Doyoung: “Honestly I don’t know if I believe it.”
Ten: “Chris, if I can just say something.”
Chris: “Of course, Ten.”
Ten: “What Johnny said about our conversation is true, we were talking about past relationships but he never said he had something still on going.”
Chris: “I guess it’s up to everyone to believe what they want. Doyoung, before you go back to your seat, if you went back would you do anything differently? Would you talk to Johnny first? Would you not say anything to Y/N? Or say something sooner?”
Doyoung: “Honestly I don’t know, I guess being upset at the time didn’t even allowed me to think straight. But if I want back to that moment before I went home I would’ve at least said Johnny’s name so that she could go straight to him.”
Chris: “Thank you, Doyoung. Also Ten and Johnny for giving us your side of the story.”
Doyoung goes back to his place and the mood is tense.
Chris: “The following week during a boat ride there were some fun moments were the bachelors had the chance to bond with our bachelorette but after a conversation was heard the reaction was not the best. Haechan what did you first think when you heard Y/N and Jeno talk about a kiss they had previously shared?”
Haechan: “In that moment my heart dropped to the floor. I was trying my best to get close to her and I had no idea she was already that close to anyone. Specially because we previously talked about it and nobody shared that.”
Chris: “You know what they say, a gentleman never kisses and tells.”
Haechan: “That’s true, that’s true. But at the time I just felt betrayed and I didn’t even know why.”
Chris: “And then you exploded and said somethings Y/N didn’t really appreciated.”
Haechan: “That’s what I regret the most. I did what I thought was right at the time, but looking back at the images I should’ve never talked to her like that. If I could go back I wouldn’t have done that scene and waited to talk to her when I was a little bit more calm.”
Chris: “It’s very good to see that you understand what you did wrong and regret it. Thank you, Haechan.”
Everybody claps.
Chris: “The week after we faced what was possibly the hardest confrontation of this season. It started since week one but it just kept aggravating throughout time, to the point that Y/N had to make the decision to have them in a two-on-one date to send one of them home. Hendery, how did you feel when you weren’t chosen to stay?”
Hendery: “It was rough. I really thought I had a chance to stay but I guess she was right. I did end up letting this whole situation get to my head and lost focus on what was really important and what I actually signed up for.”
Chris: “We did see a few moments where it was just you and Y/N and it felt like something could blossom but whenever you were with other people you seemed to instantly get in defence mode.”
Hendery: “You know, Chris, after seeing myself on TV I realised that I was really dumb. I feel like we had gotten along so well if only I had ignored everyone else around. I should’ve kept my calm most times instead of exploding like that so at the end of the day I do understand why she chose to send me home instead of Renjun. He seemed to a little bit whenever she talked to him and I didn’t.”
Chris: “Renjun, what do you have to say from your side?”
Renjun: “I think it is a common thing to think you’re doing something right and realise how stupid you’re being when you see yourself on the screen. Honestly if I was Hendery I would’ve probably reacted the same way because I did come off as such a jerk.”
Chris: “The fans are pretty divided between who was right, are you saying you ended up being the bad guy?”
Renjun: “I don’t see myself as the bad guy, I think we both thought we were right but ended up making some not so good decisions.”
Chris: “Hendery, do you share this opinion?”
Hendery: “After watching the scenes at home, yes I do agree, we both did and said things that weren’t right and I apologise for being a bit aggressive in my approach.”
Renjun: “Yeah, I would also like to apologise, not only to Hendery but to everybody if I ever did something you didn’t appreciate because I mostly likely didn’t even notice I was doing it.”
Chris: “I’m really proud of you guys in this moment for manning up and talking about this. Can we agree to leave this in the past and focus on a brighter future?”
Renjun and Hendery look at each other and then nod with a smile.
Chris: “I think we need to seal this, don’t you agree guys? You two should hug it out!”
The other boys start cheering as Hendery and Renjun get up giving each other a tight hug that leaves everyone happy with the turn out.
Chris: “Now that we’ve moved on from this tough situation let’s talk about the next gentleman that left the competition. Jaehyun, did you ever think it would be you?”
Jaehyun: “Not really, I actually thought I had a chance to make it to the end.”
Chris: “Some say you got comfortable after Y/N gave you a kiss that you stopped trying to win her heart, specially with your attitude during the two-on-one date with Taeyong. What was really on your mind?”
Jaehyun: “Honestly I don’t know why I looked so apathetic on every shot! I actually had a lot of fun that day, the museum was really cool. Maybe I was a bit jealous having to share the attention with Taeyong but I didn’t realise that maybe Y/N would’ve start feeling like I stopped trying, because that was definitely not true.”
Chris: “You did get emotional when you had to finally say goodbye and that shows you actually cared about Y/N.”
Jaehyun: “I do care a lot about her and I’ll always cherish the moments we spent together. Even though I thought I’d get further in the competition I could feel her feelings were already growing for someone else. But it was still very hard to leave.”
Chris: “Thank you for sharing Jaehyun.”
Everybody claps.
Chris: “After Jaehyun we saw another beloved contestant get sent home. Taeyong, how did it feel to be so close and get sent home?”
Taeyong: “It was bittersweet. It felt good to know we were getting closer and I really enjoy Y/N’s company but deep down I knew it was too late. We only started bonding mid-way through the journey and she already had very strong connections with the other guys.”
Chris: “What would’ve you have done differently?”
Taeyong: “I would’ve focused on Y/N from the beginning instead of trying to make friends first, sorry guys!”
They all laugh.
Chris: “Do you at least take some friendships out of this experience?”
Taeyong: “I’d like to think so!”
Everybody cheers in agreement.
Chris: “Last but not least we saw the bachelorette say goodbye to someone a lot of the fans of the show thought would make it to the finale. Jeno, did you see yourself in the final, possibly taking that last rose and spending your life with Y/N?”
Jeno: “I definitely did. Really early on I started developing feelings for Y/N and I felt like we were in sync but I guess I wasn’t the only one she was in sync with.”
Chris: “On the fantasy suite we saw you two talk about the future and you expressed your lack of interest in moving out of your hometown. Do you think that might have been a deal breaker for her?”
Jeno: “Like you said earlier today, sometimes it’s not about what you do, but what you don’t do. The further we got into this journey the more selective she had to be and unfortunately I believe that was the disagreement, let’s say, that got me sent home.”
Chris: “If you could go back would you do anything different?”
Jeno: “If I could go back I’d do it all over again just like I did. I really appreciate all the moments we shared and I wouldn’t change them one bit.”
Chris: “You were definitely a fan favorite this season and the people want to know: are you still single and looking for love?”
Jeno: “I am, Chris, but it might be that my search could be coming to an end.”
Chris: “Is that so? I feel like there’s more to that story.”
Jeno: “There is actually. I’d like to take this opportunity to announce I will be staring in the next season of the Bachelor where, like Y/N, I will be looking for the right person to spend the rest of my life with.”
The other guys cheer in support of these news.
Chris: “Those are very exciting news!”
Jeno: “They are, I’m really excited to do this.”
Chris: “Well Jeno, we’re really excited for you and we hope you find love.”
Jeno: “Thank you, Chris.”
Everybody claps.
Chris: “We have heard from the bachelors, but how about the one calling the shots? She had been backstage hearing the whole conversation and will now join us to give her side of the story. Let’s give a warm welcome to: Y/N!”
Everyone in the room gets up and cheers and you enter the stage taking the seat next to Chris.
Chris: “Welcome Y/N. How are you feeling?”
You: “It’s really great to be here and see all this familiar faces!”
You wave and smile at all of the guys you met and spent time with during weeks.
Chris: “You have been listening the whole night, id there anything you’d like to say?”
You: “Definitely. To the first guys that went home I’d like to again say sorry because I didn’t even gave you a change, I believe you are amazing.”
They thank you with a smile.
You: “Lucas, I’m really happy we made the decision to call it quits since that helped you reconnect with Ahreum. It was not fair the way things had ended between you two back in the day and I was thrilled to know you reunited. I can’t wait to receive an invitation to your wedding, and make it a plus one!”
Everybody laughs and Lucas throws you a thumbs up accepting your terms.
You: “Shotaro, I’m really happy with the way we left things and I will make you the godfather to one of my kids, I’ll keep that promise!”
He smiles excitedly.
You: “Doyoung, hearing the whole explanation now it did feel quite unnecessary for you to leave things like that, you could’ve just mentioned Johnny’s name and I could’ve just cleared the whole situation with him. You say you did it to help me but I was really hurt by it actually. And Johnny, I do understand that initially you didn’t connect the dots but once you figured out the whole thing could be about you, you should’ve said something instead of just leaving like that. You left me wondering if I did something wrong even if I did understand your reasons.”
You gulp feeling yourself get a bit emotional.
You: “Haechan, thank you for acknowledging what you said wasn’t right and I hope you think twice before reacting like that ever again.”
He mouths an ‘I’m sorry’ and you nod with a smile before you move to the next guys.
You: “Renjun and Hendery, I was really happy to see you two talk it out and make up. The whole thing was just way too dramatic and it would kill me to know you’d hold a grudge. I hope you take this experience to the future and know how to reach a little better if you end up facing something like this. Which I hope you don’t!”
Everybody laughs not wanting to imagine these two getting involved in any more love messes together.
You: “Jaehyun, thank you for explaining what you felt that day because to me it did seem like you started to take things for granted between us and that did throw me off a little bit. But I understand your side now even thought that might not have made a difference at the time.”
He smiles at you with those perfect dimples that still make your heart flutter.
You: “Taeyong, it was really hard letting you go but I mean it when I say that however wins your heart in the future will be very happy by your side.”
You take a deep breath before you move on the the last one you said goodbye to.
You: “Ah Jeno… I didn’t know I had it in me to send you home. But I’m really excited to know you’ll have the opportunity to go on your own journey and I hope you’ll be able to find true love amongst the contestants. I really fo wish you all the best.”
He thanks you before you turn back to Chris.
You:  “I think that’s it!”
You wipe the little tear at the corner of your eye with a smile.
Chris: “Thank you so much for being here with us today, Y/N. Also thank you to all the bachelors that came here to share their sides of the story and clear their names. To you at home, please stay tuned for next week where we’ll finally know who takes the last rose and the bachelorette’s heart. Could it be Yuta? Could it be Jaemin? Could it be none? Find out next week! My name is Chris Harrison and this was the special episode of ‘Men tell all’. Goodnight!”
-
In the next episode:
The final 2 bachelors pour their hearts out for the last time:
“I think we were destined to meet.”
“I knew you were the one the moment I saw you.”
“I love you.”
And plans are made for the future.
“I can make you the happiest woman in the world.”
“Will you marry me?”
Stay tuned for next weeks episode premiering 22/08.

Thank you for sending me emoji compliments, y’all ❤️‍🩹 I’ll be insufferable and post them all throughout the weekend.
I was bummed yesterday at the cancellation news, and now I’m realizing a little stunned. That’s a strong word to use — the tenor of the casts social media goodbyes a few weeks ago had made me suspect but still it felt different to have it actually confirmed immediately after getting two new episodes. What an emotional journey in 24 hours!
Anyway, my point is that now that the surprise/denial has worn off I have fully moved on to being sad. I feel so sad! I’ve been frustrated with the show these past few episodes but still had been holding onto lots of excitement for more content and still enamored by the potential of the show. How wild that after this next stretch we won’t get more!
New content was such a source of momentum during the pandemic or even just the one day promise of it. There’s still so much to unpack and explore in future fanwork and there’s still plenty to have fun with, but I’m sad about it today.
My experience of the Good Girls fandom is that I fall somewhere in the middle between feeling negative or positive about the show and the community of folks I’ve met have been so wonderful. I really appreciate the generosity everyone has shown me between chatting with me, laughing about the show, reading my writing, commenting, and especially to those who helped me edit and develop my writing skills.
This is just me saying what people already posted yesterday but less succinct. I was not expecting to feel quite so sad as TV shows always come to an end. But, alas, here I am.

For who could ever learn to love a Penguin
Tumblr media
Heyyy friends! I’m back, and I’m feeling truly better. I had a pretty bad episode of seasonal depression, which I should have seen coming, but like every year, it took me by a surprise. But as we get closer and closer to Halloween and Christmas, I get better and better. Thank you all for giving me the time I needed and a shoulder to cry on if I needed it. You guys are truly irreplaceable. I love you.
This one took way longer than it should have, but here it is. I hope you like it.
@kpopgirlbtssvt
For who could ever learn to love a Penguin
You adored your father. He was everything you aspired to be, kind and generous, compassionate and loving. You knew he was always there to protect you and to have your back if you needed help. After your mother passed away, after losing a hard battle with cancer, your relationship with your father grew more and more closer. You were always together, doing things the two of you loved. It was as perfect as it could be. The pain from the loss of your mother was still present, but it was almost okay, you still had each other. That’s why it probably hurt as much as it did when he told you that he would marry this new woman. He told you that Grace was a kind soul that had endured bad things in her past, that she was down-to-earth and deserved another chance in love. Like he did too. It felt bad that he was moving on already, but all you wanted was for him to be happy. So you smiled and promised to welcome her with open arms.
You should have known it was too good to be true. Everything your father told you about Grace turned out to be just one side of the truth. Whenever she was with him, she was loving and acting like a perfect step-mother. But it all turned sour when your father left the room. She was bitter and mean, always ridiculing you about how you dressed or how you acted around her. Of course your father would listen your worries and cries when you told him, but every time, Grace managed to turn his head.
Grace’s two children were the spitting image of her. Spoiled teens who in their minds deserved the world on a golden plate. Sasha and Charles were arrogant and spiteful, always bullying you with all kinds of horrible ways. They would steal all your clothes from your closets and replace them with old dirty rags, or pretend to do something nice and bring you a cup of cocoa, which would turn out to be something disgusting. They all treated you like you were a house maid, and not their step-sister.
Life was tolerable, you tried to focus on the good and spent as much alone time with your father as you could. You were ready to endure what ever treatment you got from your step-mother and step-siblings to keep your father happy. But life had other plans for you.
The funeral was small. Grace refused to invite your fathers old friends from distant towns, having only her family and you present. You were shattered. It felt like nothing mattered anymore, like the damage was too great to fix. The words spoken by the priest never reached your mind, unable to bring any comfort. Grace and her children on the other hand seemed to be fine. Too fine almost. You hated them from the bottom of your soul, but you knew you’d have to live with them for some time. You were in no condition on living on your own now, without anyone to rely on if something happened. You made a promise to yourself to treat Grace like she was air to you, giving her the bare minimum. They were perfectly okay with that. Even pleased that you were spending most of the time alone in your room. You’d just have to deal with this for few years and then you’d be gone. Wrong again.
Elijah Van Dahl, a wealthy socialite who had fallen for Grace. You swore you could see a pattern. You hoped Elijah would see through Grace’s lies and manipulation, but for nothing. He was way too good for her, just like your father had been. In the following few years you learned to know Elijah a lot more. He could never replace your father, but you were starting to think him as a father-figure. He treated you kindly, like you were his own. He stood up for you when Grace or her children spoke ill of you. He nurtured you when you were sick, and always put your wellbeing before his. The place you once called a home, was finally staring to feel like one again.
After you started spending more time out of your room, you noticed how distant Grace had grown from Elijah. He tried to be the best husband he could, getting nothing back from his wife. Sasha and Charles were as ignorant as ever, rolling their eyes behind his back when he tried to be nice towards them. On top of it all, they were spending huge amounts of his money. You could see that it took a toll on him, but he just kept on smiling, trying to keep them happy. He deserved to have people around him that truly loved and appreciated him and everything he does for them.
’’Everyone, I’d like to introduce you my son, Oswald.’’ Elijah said proudly, holding his hand firmly on a shoulder of a young man with raven hair. They were both smiling, though Oswald a little awkwardly. It must have been terrifying to suddenly meet so many new people at once. You weren’t expecting a warm welcome from Grace, so you took it upon yourself to make him feel like home.
’’Hi, I’m Y/N, it’s a pleasure to meet you Oswald.’’ You greeted cheerfully, pulling him to a welcoming hug.
’’Hello, Y/N, the pleasure is all mine.’’ Oswald replied as he wrapped his arms gently around you. You could feel his nerves easing already.
You turned around to introduce Grace, Sasha and Charles, who were clearly very unpleased. They were eyeing him from head to toes, not a hint of a smile on their faces. You rolled your eyes and sighed.
’’Come Oswald, I’ll show you your room.’’ You suggested, glancing towards Elijah for approval. He nodded in return before turning his eyes to his wife. He looked almost angry and you hoped he’d let it out and tell her how to treat his children.
’’I’m so sorry you had to come home to that.’’ You apologized, trying to make Oswald feel better about staying here. ’’If it helps at all, they’ve always been like that. To me too.’’
’’They shouldn’t treat you like that. You seem like a lovely person.’’
You felt your cheeks getting a little rosy, luckily you were a few steps ahead of Oswald.
’’Thank you Oswald, I’m looking forward to get to know you better.’’ You said kindly, glancing over your shoulder to look at him. His smile was genuine and radiated the same kind of warmth your father did when he smiled at you. It felt bittersweet.
You turned the handle to a spare room and opened the door. ’’Here, it’s all yours.’’
You moved aside to let Oswald in. His eyes widened as he admired the spacious room. He placed his bag on the end of the huge bed and sat down next to it.
’’It’s- it’s quite a lot to take in.’’ He sounded a little exhausted. It was easy to understand why. Being pulled to a totally new place with complete strangers around would be hard to anyone.
You smiled softly and took a seat next to him on the bed.
’’You’ll get used to it, I’m sure your father’ll do anything to make you feel like home.’’ You cheered him up.
’’That’s very kind of you to say.’’ Oswald replied, carefully placing his hand on top of yours. ’’Thank you, really, for helping me get adjusted.’’
You nodded with a smile as an answer before standing up.
’’Dinner will be ready in a few moments, I’ll see you downstairs then.’’ You said before leaving him to unpack his things. You didn’t want to be too pushy, even if you already longed to know him better. He was a breeze of fresh air in the house that sometimes felt so stuffy and hostile. He could be someone who you could trust with your heart and soul.
The following weeks went like flying. Oswald opened up more and more everyday, and it didn’t take long for you to grow some very affectionate feelings for him. And he seemed to return those feelings. He was there to comfort you when Sasha and Charles bullied you, and you were there for him. Things got extremely nasty when Grace presented a newspaper to Elijah, with a frontal page of Oswald’s criminal past. She had done everything in her power to get Oswald out of the house. Luckily Elijah was not giving up on Oswald. He had proven he had changed and was perfectly capable of living a proper life, away from crime. Of course Grace wouldn’t believe it. The marriage between the two grew more sour and sour on her end, Elijah still trying to get things to work. You admired how Elijah took Oswald in immediately, how he took you in. You only wished he would for once put his own wellbeing first.
’’May I have a moment with you, son?’’ Elijah asked, peaking his head in to your room. He knew very well what was going between the two of you, even if you tried to hide it from the rest of the family. You could see that he was glad Oswald had someone like you beside him. You had been reading books together on your bed, in a comfortable silence.
’’Of course, I’ll join you in a moment.’’ Oswald said happily. Elijah nodded and retreated to the downstairs parlour.
’’I hope it’s nothing serious.’’ You said quietly. Elijah had some health issues that you worried about. He always assured you that he’d be fine as long as he took his medicine and stayed away fro alcohol. But losing your own father made you even more worried.
’’It’s probably nothing, maybe he just wants to talk. Just for the pleasure of talking. I’ve been pretty cooped with you most of the time.’’ He said with a soft laugh and placed his book on the nightstand. You lowered yours to your lap and searched Oswalds eyes for comfort. You didn’t need to say anything, he was already moving next to you, to hold you close to his chest. You pressed yourself against him, inhaling his scent to calm down. He caressed your head while holding you tight.
’’I just feel really anxious for some reason.’’ You whispered.
’’I know, I can feel it too.’’
You lifted your eyes to look up at him. His features were soft as he gazed down at you. You reached your hand up to his cheek and pulled him in for a gentle kiss.
’’Will you sleep here tonight?’’ You asked, already knowing the answer.
’’As always.’’
Oswald pressed a kiss to your forehead before making his way to his father.
Elijah was lounging in front of a softly glowing fireplace. He looked happy. Oswald sat down next to him, the warm glow of the fireplace softening his features. For a moment they both just enjoyed the feeling of being together. Grace brought a beautiful bottle of whiskey to the side table and one glass for Oswald. He thanked her kindly.
’’Son, I want you to know, that you are loved, and you’re not alone.’’ Elijah spoke suddenly. His demeanor was filled with emotion, with unconditional love for his son. Oswald was taken aback, his eyes threatening to water. ’’And the sun will come up tomorrow.’’ He continued, bringing hope for their future together.
’’Thank you father.’’ Oswald almost sobbed, too emotional to hide it anymore.
’’Now I feel like a drink.’’ Elijah said, raising the glass Grace had brought. He filled it up with the amber liquid, savoring the strong scent.
’’But your health?’’ Oswald questioned, a clear worry in his voice.
’’To hell with that.’’
Elijah downed the drink in one go, the liquid pleasantly burning his throat. Oswalds eyes were on his father, looking for any sign of discomfort. But he seemed to be just fine.
’’I want you to have it all my son. This house and everything in it. Just the way it is, a piece of history. Our history. First thing tomorrow, I’ll have my lawyers draw it up.’’
Oswald was amazed. He felt like he belonged here, like he had finally found something to live for after losing his mother. This man he had grown to love so quickly, who took him in when he most needed it, wanted to have him continue his legacy. Oswald was just about to lean in to hug his father, when Elijah face distorted to a painful grimace. Oswald’s face dropped.
Elijah stood up abruptly, holding his stomach. He groaned in pain, his mouth starting to ooze white foam. Oswald stood up to catch him as he started fall, ending up on the floor with him.
’’Father! Father! No!’’ Oswald cried in agony.
Grace rushed to the parlour, Sasha hot on her heels.
’’Elijah!’’ She screamed, ’’Did he drink that?’’ She kept yelling.
Oswald nodded, tears streaming down his face as he held his dying father.
’’But his condition! Sasha, call an ambulance!’’ Grace commanded. Charles had papers behind the side table, worried look on his face.
Oswald was too shocked to notice how Grace motioned Charles to knock the bottle of the table. The liquid sizzled as it hit the carpet, but Oswald was too distraught to care.
’’Y/N!’’ Oswald cried. You were already on your way, running down the halls as fast as you could. You could already hear sirens somewhere on the way. You weren’t ready to face whatever waited you downstairs, but you would be there for Oswald. You’d always be there for him.
After the funeral, the house felt like a prison. Grace had turned you and Oswald to her personal slaves. She had assured you both that you couldn’t make it out there on your own, that you needed to stay at the manor for your own good. You both were too tired, too emotionally strained to fight back, so you did as she told you. You cleaned and cooked, Oswald drove her around the town and made her drinks. Which she almost always spilled, making you work extra.
’’Oswald! Make me an apple martini!’’ Grace screamed from the parlour. You and Oswald were both at the kitchen, preparing for tonights dinner. Grace had ordered a very very complicated meat dish, that required tons of pre-work. You could already see her and her children spitting it out and having you do it all over again.
Oswald sighed and began making the drink.
’’Yes, ma’am! Coming right up!’’ He replied with a fake happy voice. It pained you to see him like that, but at least you had each other. You swiped your forehead with the back of your hand, leaving a smudge of flour behind. Oswald let out a soft laughter, pulling you out of your thoughts.
’’What?’’ You asked confused, looking at him working on the drink. He paused for a moment to help you clean yourself.
’’You have a little something on your forehead.’’ He said with a smile, gripping a towel. He wiped the flour off your head and showed you the now floury cloth. You laughed a little sadly, suddenly realizing how hopeless and unfair your situation really was.
’’I want to leave.’’ You whispered, turning your head down to look at your hands. There was flour and dirt under your nails, little cuts from cleaning up broken glass. Oswald took your hands in his and gently lifted your face towards him.
’’We will leave, as soon as we can. I promise I will get you out of here.’’ He whispered, pressing his lips against yours. The kiss was filled with need, it was a promise that the days ahead would be better.
’’Oswald! Where’s the damn drink?’’ Grace’s screaming broke the moment between you, forcing Oswald back to work.
’’Just a moment, it seems I can’t find the olives.’’ Oswald reported back, looking for an excuse. You rolled your eyes, cursing Grace to the deepest hell in your mind. You weren’t usually one for violence, but you were sure Grace had a personal place reserved for her in hell.
’’On the second drawer on the left! You should know that!’’
’’Thank you ma’am, you’re right I should have known.’’ Oswald replied quietly as he opened the said drawer. Grace must have made a mistake, because there surely wasn’t olives. Oswald’s eyes grew wide as he recognized the bottle that laid on the bottom. It was the same bottle Elijah had drinker from on the night he died. Oswald remembered that the bottle fell and the liquid spilled out, but some had remained. It smelled like death. Oswald turned to look at you and lifted the bottle for you to see. It didn’t take long for you to put two and two together and figure out what had happened. You could see Oswald’s eyes turning dark, his whole body growing tense. Just to be sure, he poured some of the liquid on an apple that was left on the counter. As the liquid hit the apple, it turned rotten where ever the poison dripped. You lifted your hand to your mouth, covering your shocked expression.
’’What are we going to do Oswald?’’ You whispered, scared you would get caught. If Grace could poison her own husband, what horrible things could she do to you if she found out. Oswalds knuckles were turning white around the bottle. You hurried next to him and placed your hand over his, forcing his attention on you.
’’Oswald, talk to me.’’ You begged.
Oswalds grip around the bottle eased and his muscles relaxed.
’’I’ll handle this, you will stay out of this.’’ He said, a different tone in his voice. His eyes looked different as he looked at you. You could only nod, afraid for what he was about to do. Oswald finished making the drink and served it to Grace.
’’Dinner will be served in an hour.’’
*
Oswald had commanded you to stay the rest of the night in your room. You tried to fight back, wanting to help him anyway you could, but he was set. You wouldn’t come out of your room before he told you so. You were feeling more and more anxious by every passing minute. You could smell the roast in the oven, and sometimes hear Oswald moving the pots and pans as he prepared the dinner. Grace was most likely already at the table, waiting fro the moment she could judge the dinner to shreds.
’’Sasha! Charles! Get down here!’’
You heard Grace scream for her children, but you couldn’t hear a reply. In fact, you couldn’t hear anything. No footsteps, no bickering about having to eat something that Oswald had made. It made you awfully uneasy. Something was wrong.
’’Here’s the first piece. I hope it’s not too gamey.’’ Oswald pretended to be courteous, acting like the best butler. Grace took a small bite of the meat, her face revealing her opinion before she even opened her mouth. ’’Overcooked.’’ She said grimly.
’’Try the other, it’s much more tender.’’ Oswald suggested, cutting her a piece. Once again Grace took a bite. ’’It’s the same.’’
Oswald grinned wickedly, standing proudly next to his makings.
’’You look different. Where are the children, ring the bell again.’’ Grace continued, looking at Oswald suspiciously.
’’Oh you noticed! I do my hair differently now.’’ Oswald said cheerfully as Grace kept eating. ’’But I doubt Sasha and Charles will hear it.’’
Grace turned to look at him with a confused look.
’’I found the poisoned bottle, the bottle you used to kill my father.’’
’’What on earth are you talking about?’’ Grace asked, clearly turning anxious. Maybe even scared.
’’You should’ve thrown it away, guess you’re a little too mean to waste a good poison, huh.’’ Oswald said darkly, leaning down closer to Grace. She tried to stand up from her seat, but Oswald was quicker to grab a knife and force her to sit back down. Grace tried to call her children for help. You could hear that too. You were pacing around your room, trying to think about anything else than what was going on down there.
’’They won’t come.’’ Oswald’s grin was turning more and more wicked as he got closer to revealing what he had done to her children. ’’Where are they?’’ She pleaded.
’’You thought they tasted the same, but Sasha, definitely more tender in my opinion.’’ Oswald almost shouted, waving the knife between Grace and the two pieces of meat on the dinner table. Horrified expression on Graces face was bringing joy to Oswald, he was back to his normal wicked self, and he loved it. Grace screamed as Oswald brought the knife down to her chest, multiple times.
You covered your ears and sat down to a corner in your room, furthest from the door. Tears were falling down your cheeks, you didn’t know how to feel. You weren’t scared for yourself, but for Oswald. Could he be good ever again, could he stay on the right side of law for you? Soon the screaming stopped and you could remove your hands from your ears. The quick silence was replaced with footsteps coming closer to your room. You knew it was Oswald but you couldn’t help but feel anxious. The doorknob turned and Oswald stepped in. His face and clothes were covered in blood. You could see that he was exhausted. You stood up slowly and took a few steps closer to him.
’’This is me Y/N, the real me.’’ He said softly, not trying to hide anything. He seemed to be at peace, but a little shameful at the same time. You closed the distance between you and used your sleeve to wipe off some blood on his face.
’’I know.’’ You answered without any fear in your voice. He wasn’t the Oswald you knew anymore, but there were still undeniable feelings. Oswald lifted his hands to your waist and closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of your hand on his face.
’’I love you.’’ He said quietly, keeping his eyes closed. ’’But can you love a Penguin?’’ He continued with sorrow in his voice.
’’You’re not a Penguin to me. I’ll always love you.’’

Tonight I watched all of He-Man: Revelations and most of Centaurworld (I watched the first three episodes like, a week ago?) and I have ... opinions. (And it’s 4:37am, might as well share them while they’re fresh!)
(Warning, this got very long and ranty, sorry for stretching out your dashboards if that’s even still a thing anymore?)
He-Man was entertaining, but it did feel like (as someone with like, less than a passing knowledge of the characters) someone’s super-angsty fanfiction more than like ... a continuing series. They killed off multiple well-known, beloved characters, to drive home the point of how SERIOUS and how HARDCORE this series is, and instead it felt like being a little kid in the 80s watching Optimus Prime get murdered to sell more toys. Like, WHY DID THEY DIE? Oh right, to show the viewer how SERIOUS the bad guys are! And to give the other characters things to angst over, to show you they’re no longer just shallow 80s muscle man stereotypes to sell toys! But then you gotta wonder, where will they go from here? Who’s even left to continue the storyline? Is it still He-Man if half the supporting cast is dead?
Like I said, I’m not a He-Man fan by trade, but aside from the pointless murder, it did seem like it delved into the backstories that a lot of people have probably wanted since the 80s, and it made some very interesting points. So, hey, maybe it’ll be beloved by its fans! And it was very entertaining, especially as someone who wasn’t a childhood fan so I didn’t have a lot of nostalgia that I had to watch die. It doesn’t end on a happy note, there’s definitely the ‘what if the villains WON’ theme going, so maybe my opinion will be less dour when the next part comes out. (I did like that it focused more on the female characters, which was a very unexpected change, and in that aspect I felt it was very well written; that could explain why I’ve heard other screechingly negative feedback elsewhere online, heh. He-Man fans probably don’t appreciate the heavy preference paid to Teela.)
Centaurworld was ... well, I watched the first episode with my mother, which was a Huge Fucking Mistake. I heard that it was a thrilling combination of something akin to Adventure Time and a more serious cartoon like Avatar, and instead I got 10 minutes of that, and then 16 minutes of continuous ass, fart, and poop jokes, combined with a couple of great tunes and a lot of tuneless recitative style “songs”.
If you follow this blog, you probably know toys; you know the Poopsie Surprise toys? The ones which were so obsessed with uncomfortably sexualized poop/fart/barf references that entire scholarly articles were written about the sexualization of children with scatology-themed toys? Yeah, that’s what Centaurworld felt like, almost the whole time. Like just ... an uncomfortable amount of poop/butt/fart “jokes”, to the point where it felt like it had to be one of the writer’s fetishes. Like, it was clearly not funny, and the main character is clearly uncomfortable with it ... and it just keeps going.
I say jokes in scare quotes because jokes are supposed to be funny, and a lot of Centaurworld just wasn’t funny. You could tell it was meant to have jokes, but it was very much dated early-2000s type humor, I want to guess? The kind where it’s not so much ‘setup-punchline’ but the more ‘awkward reference awkward reference awkward reference drawn out wooooord’ type of “jokes”. And most of those “jokes” were just - you guessed it - drawn out references to butts, or farts, or some combination of the two. I felt like an aged boomer watching it. I like to think I’m hip and with the times, but it felt like it should be aimed at a middle schooler - but like, an oversexualized middle schooler? It was uncomfortable to say the least. (One character talks to his farts, claims they talk back to him, and he addresses them as ‘Daddy,’ while another character expresses how uncomfortable that is, and implies he has “issues” to unpack. Because that’s hilarious, I guess?)
Centaurworld did, beneath the heavy layer of scatology, have an intriguing storyline. A warhorse from a LOTR-style world is thrown into a wacky Adventure Time-type land made up of silly centaurs, and has to try and find her way back home. It was thrilling at times, if you could slog through everything else that beleaguered it. There were some really good jokes! But I couldn’t quite muster up a laugh, because I was still wondering when the next butt reference would sneak in. After ten terrible jokes, the one good joke couldn’t manage to lift me from the depth of despair I’d sunken into. It really only felt like the show got ‘tolerable’ around episode 7 (out of ten!!!!), which was an episode heavily focused on cats. (Which, again; wasn’t the internet very much about LOLCats in the early 2000s?)
If six episodes of a ten-episode series is nigh-intolerable, is it a successful show? Should you bother watching something that is 60%+ garbage? (And DON’T FUCKING WORRY, the poop/butt/fart jokes continued UNTIL THE FUCKING FINAL EPISODE.)
I suspect that, if there was a “goal” for all of the fetish stuff (beyond fetish stuff for fetish sake), it would be to illustrate to the viewer how uncomfortable the main character feels in this strange new land, and for us to share in her discomfort. Which, fine, sure! Secondhand embarrassment is definitely a trope. But the sheer uncomfortable volume of the poop/butt/fart jokes clearly went way beyond mere discomfort, and veered into ‘why is this coming up so much, is someone getting off on this?’ territory, at least for me. A couple butt jokes an episode, fine, okay. Entire five minute bits devoted to farts and butts? Entire songs about butts? I start questioning why it’s such a beloved subject for you to write about.
Plus, and I may be reading into this too much, but several of the only Black-coded characters felt racist. I’m talking neck-snapping, tribal body paint type racism, although only one got the exaggerated “soul” type music to sing, which I guess is a relative win? (Waterbaby and Judge Jacket, if you’re wondering who I’m referencing. One of them is a literal hippo centaur, giving us shades of Madagascar.) It wasn’t obvious, but combined with everything else, it felt ... bad. (There are multiple other nonwhite voice actors who aren’t stereotypes, so maybe it was just a bad case of ‘trying to represent different culture while being clueless white people’, who knows?) There was also some classic fatphobia, with one of the villains being shown as a fat neckbeard collector/nerd. Wasn’t that relevant in - wait for it - the early 2000s? They redeem themselves very slightly by having maybe two other characters who are visibly fat, but one of them is also viewed as an antagonist.
Anyway, I was disappointed enough with the show to feel like I should say something, so - there it is. Centaurworld did have some good moments, some lovely songs, and there was some really heartwarming and tender character development that I liked, sandwiched between huge swaths of discomfort. There might be a season 2 (there shouldn’t be, LOL) and hell, I will probably suffer through it because I want to see what happens to them. But I can’t recommend that anyone else do the same, in all good conscience. It’s not good. It’s just not. But if you have 5 hours to kill, there’s worse stuff out there?
If you want to watch one episode to see the best of the series, I recommend episode seven, “Johnny Teatime's Be Best Competition: A Quest for the Sash.” It’s themed after the CATS musical, and the extended number at the end gave me shades of MLP or Fashion Star Fillies. (I found an official clip of the song posted here.) There’s also other lovely songs in the series, but you’d have to suffer through entire bad episodes to see them. The lovely “You’re Okay” shows up in the very first episode, so if you’re curious give that a watch... just be aware it never gets better, only worse.
This series genuinely upset me, because I wanted it to be something much better, and there were glimpses of it; you just had to try and close your eyes to the obsession with butts and farting to see pieces of what it might have been.
One notable fact that I thought was kind of like ‘wow, oof’ was that Meghan McCarthy, of MLP:FiM fame, was a story editor for Centaurworld. And considering how MLP went downhill in later seasons, I gotta say I’m wondering if there’s a commonality there. Maybe her fetish is bad writing? There’s worse fetishes to have, AS CENTAURWORLD CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES.

Alright... that’s a lot to unpack... good grief... what an episode.

Odd thought:
So it’s quite heavily implied that Clemont was the one to come up with the idea of integrating Rotoms into the Rotomdex, thus kickstarting the idea of having Rotoms become a common sight in frequently used electronic devices that benefit from having autonomous and mobile behaviour, such as phones and cameras in battle arenas.
Considering that the Rotomphone is a continued fixture of the upcoming Scarlet/Violet games, on top of having been popularized in Galar and with the Rotomdex getting a start in Alola, it seems like the idea of using Rotoms in convenient electrical devices has really taken off on a multi-regional, perhaps even international, scale.
So...
I hope Clemont is seeing some sort of royalty benefits of this if these products are being monetized. Given the very commercialized nature of the Galar League (or at least implied commercialization, given that it mimics soccer leagues in theming in that region, on top of the fact we see adverts on the boards of the stadium as well as even on Leon’s cape), I can’t imagine that the Galar league gets to make use of the Rotom drone cameras for free. Therefore, someone likely makes and sells them to the league or the individual stadiums, which are likely financed by the league in some manner. If the pokemon world parallels our world, aside from Rotomphones given to young trainers to ensure they can communicate for safety and convenience on the road, I imagine that Rotomphones are something one has to buy as well.
Now, I’ve always headcanoned Clemont and his family lived in rather modest conditions (perhaps not below the poverty line, but not too far above it either, perhaps in the lower end of middle class). I hoped that the young man’s brilliance and drive, even if it doesn’t always pan out, would eventually lead him to a life of means by which he could eventually help support his family, helping to give Bonnie a happy childhood leading up to her eventual pokemon journey (given that he often appears as one of her primary caretakers, perhaps even more so than her father). A success on the scale of the establishment of the Rotom-integration trend would definitely be the windfall Clemont needed after years of using his own funds (after numerous deductions for essentials) from his position as gym leader to fund his passion of invention to mixed results. Perhaps many of his invention failures were due to the use of sub-par materials and parts that came with a lower income and meagre financial assets.
In addition to being able to continue with new, bolstered confidence and motivation on the winds of his new success, I’m sure Clemont will dedicate a great deal of these potential royalties to further iteration and invention with resources that could lead to greater and more frequent successes and greater benefits to “help people and pokemon” as he has claimed and endeavoured to do since he first fell in love with the concepts of science and engineering at large. As well, considering the fact he’s a person who cares deeply for his family’s welfare, and Bonnie’s especially, I’m certain he’ll use his a good part of his newfound wealth to ensure Bonnie has the best chance she has of pursuing her dreams too.

My Commentary on Legends Arceus
Tumblr media
So, after some 86 hours of my life being consumed, I finally managed to complete Pokemon’s newest entry into the franchise. I know I kind of alluded to this being some sort of review in previous posts I’ve made, but the fact of the matter is, I’m neither a qualified or professional reviewer, nor am I someone expecting to convince others to play this game or assign it a score.
I’m writing this more as a way to purge my thoughts and feelings on this game in a way that makes me feel like the experience is complete. And, hot damn, I really want to talk about this game!
It goes without saying that there are massive spoilers for Pokemon Legends: Arceus beneath the cut.
Now, for full disclosure, for anyone that cares about where my opinion comes from on this game with references to my praises and critiques: I have completed the game in so far as that I have completed the main story, the post-game story, collected all the wisps, collected all the poetry, and gotten a research score of 10 to classify every pokedex entry as finished.
That said, I cannot bring myself to complete every single research entry for each pokemon’s shiny bonus, nor grind that last 2.5k points to get myself to a 10 star rank with Galaxy Team. As someone who doesn’t hunt shinies, and having looked up the 10 star reward, neither feels worth it to me.
That all said, I do think that I have a pretty broad scope with which to comment on this game. So here we go!
To start, let’s get around two big elephants in the room:
Firstly, let’s address game’s continuous comparisons to Breath of the Wild. Yes, in the very broadest and simplest sense, you could compare it to The Legend of Zelda’s open-world marvel. I had to actually dissuade myself from making this comparison in order to avoid the disappointment with the very first thing that I found annoying about this game: your base character cannot climb or mantle over small ledges.

Weird odd Volo theory with Legends: Arceus spoilers beneath the cut...
"Someday, I'll solve every riddle in the legends of Hisui's Pokémon. And on that day, I'll stand before Arceus at last—No, I will CONQUER it! No matter how many years, how many decades, how many centuries it takes me!"
This is something Volo says after we defeat him and Giratina.
This just makes me wonder though:
Is it odd to anyone else that he says “centuries” there specifically?
I suppose this could be him being overly dramatic, but is the pursuit of a physical god not something that someone could fall into pursuing over a long-lived life?
Take another Volo quote: "I've devoted myself to Arceus beyond any other! I worshiped it as the creator of our entire world! I bent all of my passion and interest to its study! All the time I've spent poring over the legends... Everything that I've done—!"
This sounds like an obsession that could be forged over a lifetime, though Volo does not appear all that old.
So I have to ask, in light of these quotes and Volo’s utterly fervent need to reach Arceus and his dedication to that goal: is Volo immortal?
Or at the very least, is he incredibly long-lived.
And that itself brings upon us another important question.
We’ve seen numerous ancestor characters to various Sinnoh characters (as well as ones from other regions). Naturally, we’d lend that assumption to Volo being an ancestor of Cynthia as well, right?
What if we were just meant to assume that?
What if Volo is long-lived, or even immortal, and the champion we all know and love in the modern Sinnoh era, is in fact the same person?
Appearance-wise, Volo could pass for Cynthia (given a new hairdo), and perhaps through clever feats of disguise; or if they’re, in fact, agender or genderfluid and able to pass as either of the two traditional binary genders; or if she’s transgender entirely, the chances are of Volo actually being Cynthia are not entirely remote. (I should make a disclaimer here, I’m not trans or non-binary, so if this seems like a misappropriation of these gender identities for this theory, I do apologize. I mean no offence or misuse.)
This doesn’t necessarily account for the changes in personality though. But you know what does change a person’s personality and perspective?
Time.
Legends: Arceus takes place at least 200 years before the Diamond and Pearl games, I believe. I know people whose entire personality and perspective have changed over just a decade. I know I’m a vastly different person than I was ten or even five years ago.
Assuming Legends is set in the same universe and timeline as the Sinnoh we all know, could the protagonist in this newest pokemon game set Volo on a new path by defeating him? Maybe Volo discovered a better path for himself all on his own during those centuries. Or maybe Cynthia is just very good at burying her Volo-esque impulses behind that champion facade in the Diamond and Pearl games...
We should also consider that Volo uses the same exact team as Cynthia, barring Milotic (which isn’t in Legends, so maybe that’s more technical reason than a lore one). Sure, we know that many ancestor characters use the same pokemon as their descendants. But most seem to use only one. Volo uses five of the same pokemon as Cynthia. As the old saying goes, once is chance, twice is coincidence, thrice is a pattern... and so on.
Wrong or right, the idea intrigues me, because I can’t just believe they’d throw in the word “centuries” for no good reason in that one line of dialogue.

I’m confused about your stance on Pietro as a morally ambiguous scientist. I feel that is strictly on you, because I haven’t seen many who share your stance. The only time we saw him in person was when he dug his nails into the seat after watching his Penny, his DAUGHTER, DIE on international tv. I wasn’t shocked at him being a nice guy at all. Not everyone in Atlas is a dick, I thought you’d be all for that.
I quite like the relationship between Penny and Pietro in theory. My problem is with how simplistically it’s presented now - Pietro is an adoring father meant to contrast Ironwood, willing to toss away everything for his daughter alone, he’s so good!! - and how that Dad of the Year Award characterization ignores the incredibly shady actions that led to Penny’s creation in first place, as well as Pietro’s explicit/implicit support of treating her more like a weapon than a person (Penny shouldn’t talk to people, go out alone, we need to test her in the tournament, etc.) throughout the early volumes. If you’re actually interested in a breakdown of this, I’d recommend @silvokrent‘s post that I was tagged in just this morning (*waves*). So no, it’s not strictly on me. This is no doubt a minority opinion in the fandom, but I’m not the only one who wondered where the acknowledgement of these canonical events went.
The tl;dr version is:
Pietro intentionally made a child soldier. That’s the long and the short of it. For years the fandom crucified Ozpin for making “child soldiers” (AKA training college age students for a professional career they willingly sought out) whereas Pietro is the one who actually built an adorable looking girl with the personality/experiences of a young teenager and went, ‘You’re our military’s newest defense!’ Unlike asking a person to fight on your behalf (Pyrrha), Pietro wanted a controlled weapon that was also a thinking, feeling being with a soul. The benefits of a human fighter without any pesky issues like them telling you “No.” That’s ethically horrifying. Pietro created Penny with the express purpose of being a controlled military project. One he was very kind to and obviously loved, yes, but Penny was designed to be military property nonetheless. It was only in the latest episode that we suddenly saw him go “Huh. Maybe my daughter’s autonomy is more important than the tasks I built her for?”
I think there’s a great story buried here. A story about a scientist who creates a weapon and then slowly comes to see her as human, developing into a man capable of risking a world for his daughter, rather than building a “daughter” to serve the rest of the world. My only problem with Pietro’s current characterization is that we never see how he got there. The story never grappled with the responsibility he holds for making Penny in the first place, following these orders over the years, supporting Ironwood’s beliefs about how she needs to be treated, or when he went from ‘Yeah, building a person to serve us in this war is a great idea’ to ‘Penny potentially dying to save the world isn’t worth it.’ His admission last episode contradicts the very reason he built her in the first place... so what changed? The above is a lot to unpack and RWBY ignored all of it where Pietro is concerned. As much as I enjoyed the father-daughter moments out of context, with context I absolutely went, “Are we ever going to acknowledge that Pietro created a kid to fight this war? And then after she was murdered rebuilt her to continue protecting the city? Why is Ironwood the only one who gets heat for aura experiments or treating Penny like a tool when Pietro is the one who PROPOSED this project in the first place?” The issue is the lack of development and continually putting responsibility on the latest antagonist character, not the fact that Pietro is a nice guy. A nice guy who the story acknowledged did this incredibly shady stuff is the sort of complexity I appreciate in Atlas. Not just “Oh hey, Atlas managed to produce a good guy! ...provided you ignore his incredibly dubious history up until now.”

I really admire so many things about your writing - the introspection and deep meaning, the realistic and sensitive way that you handle topics. Do you have any recs for fav media/books/tv shows/fanfics ? I guess I'm curious if there are any you think might have similar qualities/themes?
This is a tough one because basically everything I consume gets picked apart and reused in some way. However, I’ll give it a shot:
The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. There’s quite a lot I like about Zusak’s use of language and have since 2007 when I read The Book Thief for the first time, and there’s something very cinematic and magical about I Am the Messenger (particularly in the chapter with the young track runner).
The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. He’s most commonly known for Cloud Atlas, but he has an ongoing theme of vampires and cannibalism reappearing in his work (I just read Slade House for the first time while I was in quarantine) and there’s something deeply satisfying about the way that all of the disparate pieces come to fruition at the climax of The Bone Clocks. Not a perfect book, but deeply satisfying.
The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver. Again, she’s most commonly known for The Poisonwood Bible, but I liked that well enough to read The Lacuna in 2013, and I completely hated it for the first half of the book until finally something clicked in my brain and I activated the literary critic within, who doesn’t care so much about whether they enjoy something and more cares about how well something is done. The description of US American rationing during World War II really got me onto the novel’s side, if that makes sense; and I do love a good family epic, and while this only focuses on one protagonist instead of generations of them, it’s interesting in a similar way to The Bone Clocks where you see everything start to snowball together.
Literally anything by Ursula Vernon/T. Kingfisher. I particularly recommend The Raven and The Reindeer, which I read shortly after being diagnosed with my chronic illness and really helped me to understand the irrelevance of shame. There’s something very satisfying about saying “a reindeer doesn’t care if it smells bad, so I’m going to lean into that particular apathy and not allow a bully to take me down over it.” Something comforting about taking shelter in the animal and in survival, when you and your body are in one place and working on the same side, and it’s your brain that’s ready to give up first but your body will keep dragging you through because that’s what it does. Certain lines in Indelicate were inspired by her adaptation of Tam Lin in Jackalope Wives and other Stories (https://www.amazon.com/Jackalope-Wives-Other-Stories-Kingfisher-ebook/dp/B071946RLN). Lots of her short stories are available at this link for free: http://www.redwombatstudio.com/portfolio/writing/short-stories/
TV’s a little harder to unpack, since I don’t always think in terms of visual media, I tend to default to words first. Recently I’ve been enjoying New Amsterdam on NBC--it’s nice to see the radical socialist doctor doing his damnedest to secure the right thing--and Call the Midwife--similar reasons. There’s a lot about meeting someone where they are in both shows that I appreciate.
There’s also a lot of music that inspires my writing so I’ll have to dedicate a post specifically to that in my methods and materials.
Fanfic, though! Lots of my favorites, lots of genres. Here we go:
we are all stardust by synergenic (Losseflame) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/5682496) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, pairing Finn/Poe Dameron. Sexually explicit, but also leans a lot into physicality. You can probably see the influence on the very first chapter of Indelicate when Eddie’s waking up in pain and Richie’s at his bedside. It’s very much inspired by a similar sickbed scene here.
If They Haven’t Learned Your Name by silentwalrus (https://archiveofourown.org/works/6329503) Captain America/Marvel Cinematic Universe Steve Rogers/James “Bucky” Barnes. The holy grail of Steve/Bucky fanfiction. If you want independent character exploration, this is the place to go. Natasha shaving her head? Yes. Sam pleading with Steve to keep his shit together while thirty Koren grandmothers assume they are American celebrities? Yes. Bucky defiantly hunting down his sense of self while bingeing romance novels in a space ship? Yes. Pay particular attention to the Sam chapters, because they’re a beautiful way of defining Steve’s characterization from an outside perspective, and I’m trying to do the same with Eddie looking at Richie in Indelicate.
An Ever-Fixed Mark by AMarguerite (https://archiveofourown.org/works/8523001) Pride & Prejudice (Jane Austen) Elizabeth Bennet/Colonel Fitzwilliam, Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy. Soulmark AU. This is one of my longtime favorite fanfictions and what it taught me was cause and effect. The characters move the plot forward based on their assumptions and decisions. Definitely very helpful when I was writing TTHAEL by the seat of my pants.
You Can Keep Holding On by NorthernSparrow (https://archiveofourown.org/works/7233709) Supernatural Dean Winchester/Castiel. Sexually explicit. A lot of the summary I can give here is spoilers, but if you read this one through, you’ll be able to see the inspiration for the “Can you tell me where I can get another Eddie Kaspbrak?” scene in Indelicate.
Work of All Saints by antistar_e (kaikamahine) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/15006644) Coco (2017) Imelda Rivera/Héctor Rivera/Ernesto de la Cruz. Sexually mature. Oh my GOD this is a beautiful coming-of-age story set in turn-of-the-century Oaxaca, this is the best complete expansion of canon that I’ve ever seen; the author takes the pieces and runs with them and it is WONDERFUL.
Lycanthropic Studies by Eiiri (https://archiveofourown.org/series/575263) Harry Potter, Remus Lupin/Sirius Black canon-divergence AU. I very much enjoy the meditation on lycanthropy as a chronic illness and I sometimes reread this for comfort. Particularly early on Remus has a rant about how he’s sick and he’s always sick and his life doesn’t stop for it, despite holidays and birthdays he still has to deal with the consequences of his illness and take the devastating medication, and there’s a lot about that that speaks to me. I haven’t kept up with the series for some time, though.
Careful Truths by SassySnowperson (https://archiveofourown.org/works/12111966) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Bodhi Rook/Luke Skywalker canon-divergence AU. Sexually explicit. Honestly identity p!rn fics are a good inspiration for that third-person limited perspective I’ve been working on in Indelicate. Also I love love LOVE Bodhi Rook. It’s fun watching him run in circles trying to conceal his identity from Luke while completely oblivious to Luke doing exactly the same thing.
Stammtisch by chaya (https://archiveofourown.org/works/15060152) Critical Role: Season 2, Caleb Widogast/Mollymauk Tealeaf, AU. Sexually explicit. Long before Caleb actually leveled up enough to cast Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion, chaya speculated about what kind of spaces he might create for each of his friends. I think it’s a very good resource for really condensing characterization down into lots of images and concepts and deciding what other characters know about them. The idea of making space for someone else is something that I lean into a lot when I write Ben, who’s the kind of man who will set himself on fire to keep those he loves warm, and even though Critical Role has far more material than even IT for determining characterization, and even though this particular moment has already occurred in canon--it’s just a wonderful homey story, and has the kind of found family vibes I like for the Losers as well.
I know that’s a lot to unpack there, but all of those fics are very good and I recommend reading any assortment that appeals to you. (Work of All Saints in particular you don’t have to be familiar with the source material beyond the basic premise; it stands on its own.) Thank you for asking, and thank you for reading!
