It’s always funny when anglo writers looking to express a specific idea casually pluck a cool ready-made monosyllabic phrase from their language’s unlimited supply and Romance language translators just curl up in the fœtal position and cry. I'm reading a text in which the American author talks about ‘Haves’ vs ‘Have-Nots’ vs ‘Have-Mosts’ —the poor French translator translated this as ‘ceux-qui-ont’ (the French language: don’t worry I’m just getting warmed up), ‘ceux-qui-n’ont-pas’ (nice we’ve doubled the syllable count but we mustn’t falter), and the beautiful ‘ceux-qui-ont-plus-que-tous-les-autres’ (300% expansion ratio let’s gooo! we did it great work everybody.) From 2 to 8 syllables—the minute I saw that bulky thing I knew it had to be Have-Mosts in the original and I was giggling. The anglo author happily proceeds to use the phrase ‘Have-Mosts’ 5 times per paragraph because why not! it’s so quick and wieldy :) we don’t actually need the word wieldy 'cause it’s just the normal state of our language <3 meanwhile you can feel the French translator’s desperation grow as she is reduced to juggling with “those” and “the latter” to avoid summoning her creature. Eventually she reaches the acceptance stage and uses ceux-qui-ont-plus-que-tous-les-autres again like, it’s my monster. I shouldn’t reject it

'Especially always being the funny guy, it's hard to convince people that you're anything other than that. Just seeing Rhys really hone in on those moments was like 'Oh, shit, alright.' It's really beautiful.'

here’s the thing.
if you’re one of the people celebrating our flag means death’s cancellation for whatever reason right now, i need you to realize that this is just a sign that whatever you love is next.
and i’m not saying that out of spite. having your favourite show cancelled is awful, i wouldn’t wish it on anyone. but if our little-gay-pirate-show-that-could can’t get its third and final season, the future of queer media is extremely grim.
ofmd was the definition of a sleeper hit. hbo max had no faith in it when the first season came out. it gained popularity purely through word-of-mouth. but it became one of max’s biggest shows, and it’s since been marketed as their flagship series.
it was the #1 most in-demand series in the world for 8 weeks (7 of those weeks consecutively). it’s currently in the 99.7th percentile of the comedy genre, meaning it’s in higher demand than 99.7% of all comedy series in the u.s. it has a 94% audience and critics score on rotten tomatoes. it’s the most in-demand hbo original series even above euphoria, succession, and the last of us.
it was nominated for 16 awards for the first season alone, including a GLAAD award and a peabody award. the second season was just nominated for an art directors guild award, which it was previously nominated for and won in the same category for season one.
besides awards, ofmd is critically-acclaimed and praised for its representation (including a cast of majority queer, bipoc, and disabled characters) and themes of anti-colonialism, challenging gender norms/toxic masculinity, and self-discovery/acceptance. it also has a diverse team of directors and writers consisting of several bipoc, women, and queer/trans/non-binary people.
on top of all of this, the plan for the show all along was only ever for three seasons. david jenkins only wanted three seasons for the full romcom structure to tell ed and stede’s story. that’s it. nothing more.
this isn’t an attempt to make you care about the show. but ofmd’s cancellation isn’t just a loss for the fanbase and the cast/crew. it’s a sign that it does not matter how successful or profitable shows highlighting lgbtq+ (or otherwise inclusive) narratives are or how many big names are involved. ofmd would not have been cancelled if it were a straight romcom. they would’ve magically found the budget. but corporate greed doesn’t care about us. they have no respect for queer people or queer media. and in the age of streaming, it’s only a matter of time until we lose all of it.

The amount of times I think "is Rhys Darby about to fucking die in real life" when watching Stede gambol around is proof of what a phenomenal physical actor he is.
My guy is swinging around on a ladder, basically turning himself upside down, in like the first two minutes of the show. Even Vico Ortiz said they were worried he was about to die doing that. He runs limbs akimbo and I worry about him just faceplanting into a tree/foliage. In s1 he manages to stomp around in his little heels in very impractical environments while also not dying in the attempt.
The way he's able to look so very uncoordinated is a real testament to how coordinated he is I think. He's excellent at physical comedy, and it's funny, yes, but it's also very technically impressive.

DO NOT HOUND THE ACTORS FOR INFO ABOUT SEASON 2
This SAG strike is a no promotion strike, meaning that if any actor who is a part of the guild promotes a show or movie in any way, they will be kicked out of the union.
This also goes for the writer's strike. The writers being on strike means that the editing for the show has most likely come to a complete stop. Any edit or change to the show requires approval from the writers, and if they give any feedback during the strike, they can be kicked out of the union.
This is why we haven't heard any news about Season 2. The editors and effects people literally CAN'T do their job during the strike.
IT'S TIME TO STOP COMPLAINING AND START SUPPORTING THE WRITERS AND ACTORS AND EDITORS WHOSE LIVLIHOODS ARE AT STAKE!
