You’re chest-to-chest in the dark. His collar is askew. Your hand brushed his waist when you stumbled in. He keeps still. Too still.

“Don’t move.” His breath fans across your cheek. Warm. Frayed at the edges. “If they hear us, they’ll find you.” (You notice he said you, not us.)

He doesn’t touch you, but his eyes, if you could see them, would be full of hunger held back. You swear you hear a prayer under his breath.

And when your chest brushes his chest again, his head tips forward until his forehead almost touches yours.

“I am trying to do the right thing.” “Please don’t tempt me.”

🚬 Detective Jonah Redd

The room’s too small. His jacket brushes your skin, and his hand, his gun hand, is braced by your hip to keep you from falling.

He says nothing. For once, the detective’s lost his words.

“You okay?” he asks, but it comes out low. Strained.

Your breath ghosts over his collarbone. He twitches. You hear him swallow, jaw flexing. Then, a whisper:

“This ain’t a good idea.”

But he doesn’t move. When you press a little closer, whether by accident or not, he exhales hard through his nose like it’s taking everything not to grab your waist.

“I’ve made a lotta mistakes. Don’t make me add you to the list.”

🎙️ Silas Wren

This man is shaking. He is not okay. His brain is short-circuiting at the close proximity and your scent and your breath and the fact that your thigh is touching his.

“Sooo... this is fine! Yup! Just two adults hiding together in a... a closet. Yay.”

You shift. He yelps. You whisper his name to hush him. He short-circuits.

But then, then you get bolder. Maybe you lean in a little. Maybe your lips almost graze his ear when you whisper that it’s okay.

And suddenly?

He’s silent. Dead silent. His eyes lock on yours in the dark.

“...You're messing with me, aren't you?”

You don’t answer. You don’t have to. He knows. And now his hand is on your thigh. Shaking.

“Okay. But if we die in here, I’m dying with a boner. Just letting you know.”

🧠 Dr. Elaine Marrow

She’s still. Too still. Like a specimen holding its breath under glass.

Your proximity is nothing to her. Or so she tells herself. But you notice her fingers twitch when your hips align. Her pupils, even in the dark, contract when your hand brushes hers.

“Quiet.” Her voice is sharp. Barely audible. “There’s something outside.”

You both freeze. Then slowly, very slowly, her arm presses against yours. You glance at her. She meets your gaze. But there’s heat under it. Controlled. Suppressed.

“Your heart rate’s elevated,” she whispers. “Are you scared… or is it something else?”

You’re not sure yourself. And neither is she.

🕯️ Sister Mercy

She’s calm. Steady. Her breath doesn’t change, even as yours stutters. You’re flush against her—soft fabric, faint scent of incense.

Her hand rests just beside your hip. Not touching. But almost.

“You mustn’t fear closeness.”

You don’t know what to say. Not right now. Because all you feel is her, and her pulse.

She leans in. Her lips brush your ear.

“Would you like me to help you breathe?”

And for a second, you forget you’re supposed to be hiding.

👁️ The Second (HIM)

He doesn’t hide.

He simply stands behind you, close enough that your back brushes His chest. He doesn’t move, and yet you feel watched.

“You hide so sweetly.”

His hand rests beside your throat. Not touching. But the implication is there. Always there.

You try to speak, but your voice catches. And He leans in, lips almost touching your ear.

“If I wanted them to find us…” “...they would.”

You freeze. He smiles.

“But I want you to myself.”

And just like that, the dark isn’t hiding you anymore.

i say this in all seriousness, a great way to resist the broad cultural shift of devaluing curiosity and critical thinking is to play my favorite game, Hey What Is That Thing

you play it while walking around with friends and if you see something and don't know what it is or wonder why its there, you stop and point and say Hey What Is That Thing. and everyone speculates about it. googling it is allowed but preferably after spending several minutes guessing or asking a passerby about it

weird structures, ambiguous signs, unfamiliar car modifications, anything that you can't immediately understand its function. eight times out of ten, someone in the group actually knows, and now you know!

a few examples from me and my friends the past few weeks: "why is there a piece of plywood sticking out of that pond in a way that looks intentional?" (its a ramp so squirrels that fall in to the pond can climb out) • "my boss keeps insisting i take a vacation of nine days or more, thats so specific" (you work at a bank, banks make employees take vacation in long chunks so if youre stealing or committing fraud, itll be more obvious) • "why does this brick wall have random wooden blocks in it" (theres actually several reasons why this could be but we asked and it was so you could nail stuff to the wall) • "most of these old factories we drive past have tinted windows, was that just for style?" (fun fact the factory owners realized that blue light keeps people awake, much like screen light does now, so they tinted the windows blue to keep workers alert and make them work longer hours)

been playing this game for a long time and ive learned (and taught) a fuckton about zoning laws, local history, utilities (did you know you can just go to your local water treatment plant and ask for a tour and if they have a spare intern theyll just give you a tour!!!) and a whole lot of fun trivia. and now suddenly you're paying more attention when youre walking around, thinking about the reasons behind every design choice in the place you live that used to just be background noise. and it fuckin rules.

Reaction: Drops eye contact so fast he might dislocate his spine.

“Forgive me, I didn’t see anything—I didn’t mean to—I’ll step out!” He nearly breaks the door trying to shut it behind him. Will be flustered for the rest of the day.

Reaction: Brief pause.

“You're fine. Just button that before you catch a chill.” Totally composed on the surface… but later, she’s staring at a wall thinking about it a little too long.

Reaction: Chokes on his own spit. Tries to walk backwards out the door while babbling.

“OH MY GOD I SWEAR I WASN’T—LIKE—I’M SORRY—YOU LOOK GREAT BUT NOT THAT I WAS LOOKING, I MEAN—BYE.” Trips over the doorframe. Sends you a “sorry again” over text 10 minutes later.

Reaction: Immediate eye-avert.

“Shit—sorry. My bad.” Closes the door, but you can hear him audibly exhale. Avoids you for half a day then apologizes with your favorite drink.

Where a deal goes only a bit sideways but in the wake of it, Robotnik is reminded sharply that his partner is only human, and vulnerable. He sets out to drill the importance of that fact into Stone‘s brain with a bit of a hands-on approach

for all those who are worried about viktor's importance to season 2 and/or want to see him as a (THE) huge villain of the story...

these 2 shots have always fascinated me, the first being from heimerdinger's warning about the arcane to council in 1x02. thesecond is from the main trailer for season 2 (which we all know since we've watched both a million times!). to note:

the clouds are parted the same way, in a circle, above a city/civilization.

Light is concentrated at the center of the cloud parting.

an important DIFFERENCE, however, is the absence of the mage-like figure in the trailer's image. and call me a conspiracy theorist (so is the way of being a viktor fan at this point), but it looks to me like the trailer has cropped something out. that's my trailer screenshot straight from youtube. and i think there's clearly something missing...

second, and this may be an even larger stretch, i think we ought to pay some mind to arcane's thematic lighting and coloring in season 1.

the sudden orange and red imagery in heimerdinger's warning to jayce and viktor about the hexcore's potential for destruction comes as a visual shock. i can't think of many scenes that are colored in the same way, if any at all, until the season finale.

the whole council chamber is doused in an eerie red lighting - clear foreshadowing to the "deadly" end they are about to meet once jinx attacks. but i think there's something worthwhile in this train of thought: heimerdinger's episode 2 warning about the arcane + viktor's evolving hexcore + heimerdinger's second warning explicitly to jayce and viktor about the evolving hexcore, in this red/orange lighting + the council's doom spelled out in red/orange + viktor (who heralds their end by announcing the peace treaty between piltover and zaun) profiled specifically in red/orange.

IN SUM: both of these things could prove that viktor will have IMMENSE importance in season 2, if not herald (!!!) the arcane doom heimerdinger fears so much.

call me crazy. there's only 9 days till i find out for certain whether my pipe dream of a BBEG viktor comes true or not. but, in my heart of hearts, i really hope these parallels and colors and themes and potentialities amount to something.
