"When I was 20 years old I was very sick with a serious illness that threatened my life if I did not take serious action and have a very brutal and invasive surgery. I was dying slowly for a year with my illness and losing weight rapidly. I was half the man I was before I became ill.

「20歳の時、大病を患ったんだ。ちゃんと真剣に向き合って、むごい手術だけど受けないと命が脅かされるほどのやつ。その後1年はゆっくり死に向かっていたも同然だったな。体重も急激に落ちちゃって。病気にかかる前とはすっかり別人になってしまってた。

I knew I wanted to survive so I decided to have the surgery but the procedure went poorly and I began to bleed internally. The doctors tried giving me many blood transfusions but I was losing too much blood and having seizures so they opened me back up and tried to find the problem at the site of the first surgery. It turns out that I wasn't clotting blood because I needed Plasma infusions instead of blood transfusions which ultimately corrected the internal bleeding.

生きたいって気持ちは確かだったから手術を受け入れたんだけど、それが上手く行かなくて。術中に内出血しちゃって、医者としては輸血を試みたんだけどそれでも出血がひどくて。ついには痙攣も併発したもんだから、もう一回切開されることになって。結局、血液じゃなくてプラズマって成分を注入する必要があったんだよね。それでなんとか内出血は止められた。

When I was discharged from the hospital a month later I was very very weak and couldn't even walk on my own. I was taking very strong painkillers and spent my days lying in bed in a lot of pain.

１ヶ月後、退院出来た時にはそれはもう弱り切ってた。自力で歩けすらしなかったからね。強度の鎮痛剤飲んで、苦痛に耐えながらベッドで横になる毎日。

At that time I was watching many films and one day I decided to watch a movie called "Bronson" directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.

その頃はかなり映画を見漁ってたんだけど、ある日『Bronson』ってのを見てみようと思って。ニコラス・ウィンディング・レフン監督のやつ。

It is a film about a man who spent his life in prison and in one of the opening scenes, the song "The Electrician'' by the Walker Brothers plays.

刑務所の囚人の話しなんだけど、そのオープニング・シーンでウォーカー・ブラザーズの『The Electrician』って曲が流れるんだ。

I had never heard the song before but the imagery coupled with the beauty of the music instantly made me begin to cry. Like the main character in the film I felt the feeling of being in a prison with my illness and I loved how the music brought this emotion fully into focus.

そこで初めて耳にした曲なんだけど、その美しさと映画の世界観も合わさって、始まって早々泣き出してしまったんだよね。なんていうか、その囚人みたいに僕もこの病っていうある種「檻」に閉じ込められてるような気がしてきて。とはいえこの曲を聞くことでそういう感情がより自分の意識に昇ってきたこと、その感覚自体はすごくよかったよ。

The way the song begins is with an extreme amount of tension, so you are instantly trapped inside this very uncomfortable, uneasy place. The tension builds and builds until you can't take it anymore and then suddenly the tension breaks and you are lifted into this beautiful chorus that is well worth the wait.

曲の出だしはそれはもう尋常じゃない緊張感に包まれてて。あまりに張り詰めてるもんだから、聞いた瞬間不快感覚えるくらい。それからもずーっと緊張感は増してって、あぁもうこれ以上無理ってところでやっと解放されるんだけど、そこから続いていくサビがこれが美しくて、待った甲斐あったなって感じなの。

This chorus feels like flying and like dying, it is a pleasant and sweet relief, only to be thrown back into that state of anxiety and tension moments later.

サビはふわふわ空でも飛んでる感じとでもいうのかな、でもどこか死に向かってる感じもして。その後すぐまた、不穏感と緊張感に塗れた世界に連れ戻されるんだけど、それまでのつかの間の安堵、安らぎって感じ。

I love this song very much because it represents this very dark and very formative time in my life when I stared into the pitch black mouth of death and found a way to claw my way back again, back to the neverending tension and the unease of life."

なんでこんなにこの曲が好きなんだろうって、つまりはこの曲が当時の僕を体現してるからなんだなって思う。もの凄く暗いんだけど、同時に僕は何者なんだろうって自分自身を形作っていってた当時の僕。「死」っていう暗黒への入り口にあって、飲み込まれそうになりながらもなんとか生の世界に這い戻ってきた、そんな人生のある時期。まぁそれって、（この曲の展開みたいに）これからは緊張感やら不安感ともずっと付き合って行かないといけないってことを意味してもいるんだけどね。」

“This is The Walker Brothers sixth and final album, and a bizarre attempt at a comeback. I imagine it decimated their previous fanbase. It came towards the end of a long ten year gap in recording for Scott Walker, preceded by some creatively ‘lost years’ when, after the commercial failure of his artistic masterpiece Scott 4, he reverted to an unfortunate series of albums of country music covers. This album, in effect, rather than being a final Walker Brothers collaboration, was his way back to finding his own true voice again. . I’m biased of course, but it is clearly the Engel-penned tracks on this album which are the most interesting. S.Walker takes the first four: Shutout, Fat Mama Kick, Nite Flights (later covered by David Bowie on his 1993 Black Tie White Noise album) and The Electrician. Rather wonderfully, someone saw fit to release this avant-garde piece of rock electronica, apparently about the work of a CIA torturer, as a single – cut in half from its original 6+ minutes. It did not chart. But it clearly stirred the creative juices of many young musicians. According to Allmusic.com this song inspired Midge Ure to write Vienna, for which we can be truly thankful. . John Walker (Maus) takes the last four tracks and they could be from a different album entirely. In fact, they should have been. The song titles make some attempt to get into the same mindset as their bandmate (Disciples of Death, Fury and the Fire, Child of Flames sound like they could be Joy Division tracks) but musically they are mundane, and in the case of Gary Walker (Leeds) Death of Romance, painfully plodding. . That said, this strange album of different styles and sounds, the democratic (but ultimately failed) attempt at collaboration, the one member of the band pushing forward into unknown territory, whilst the other two look back at faded glory seems like a perfect summation of the career of The Walker Brothers...” .
