The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving⁠ ⁠ This album is tremendous and almost entirely unknown to US folks who were instead spending this era listening to the last great era of Death Cab for Cutie instead (honestly, not a terrible way to spend your time either). They were Manitoba's answer to everything I was recreationally crying to in my early college years...something like a harder Promise Ring, a Death Cab with fewer arena ambitions, and the vocabulary of the Decemberists without being so fucking insufferable (don't @ me, even if you like their music you can't argue that it might be better if they put down the thesaurus for a song or two, etc.). Left and Leaving was one of those albums I never expected because it was introduced to me by a friend and it happened at the very moment I was having a pivotal moment in my life, in hindsight. As such, I've attached immense emotional importance on it and frankly can barely get through the song Pamphleteer (a true highlight of this album) without getting all sad and needing to go buy a pack of cigarettes for old time's sake. ENDEARINGLY LITERATE SONGWRITERS WHOSE “FUN” BAND NAME *MAY* HAVE MUTED THEIR POPULARITY, no. 4. Who knows, that’s a great name for a band where the leader writes songs based on #MartinAmis novels and stuff. There’s no way to overstate how important some of these songs are to our family, when I was putting them on mix CDs for the minivan when the kids were young, “Plea from a Cat Named Virtute” especially. It’s on a mix of songs that tell stories (alongside Johnny B. Goode and Space Oddity and Ode to Billy Joe, et al) and so often, so often I’ve been driving around five weeping people, each of us trying to hide from the others that ONCE AGAIN we were unable to make it through the bridge without stifling sobs. I dare all of you reading now, listen to the cat sing, “I know you’re strong” without a lump in your throat. Every time. Anyway. My wife went on errands so I turned this up really loud and the guitars are just so big and the lyrics so elusive and sad and catchy. This is one of my favorite albums I forget when discussing my favorite albums. The Weakerthans became such an important sound in our marriage when we relocated from Vancouver to Winnipeg. We saw them live, we saw them walking around the city, he stood in line during The Loving Days and got me an autograph. Now, the music became the anthem of my unravelling.

1. do you actually take the road less traveled or do you want and desire to be adventurous so bad you’ve subconsciously convinced yourself you actually are? this is an interesting question n i think about all the time how normalcy and unconventionality are defined. i also think thinking too hard about this is avoiding the question entirely.. i like what frank sinatra said in my way

2. ideal color on a leaf? bright red

3. real or fake fur? why? i have a thrifted real fur coat. i dont think we need real furs anymore tho

4. if you had the ability to change appearance at will would you use it for good or bad? would you act out of self interest or become a vigilante of sorts? i would use it for good and just be the lead of 10 different spot-on cover bands. on mondays i am bruce springsteen etc

5. if you were to bottle up your hopes and dreams what color would it be and what smell could one faintly detect coming off said bottle? it would be a shiny gold! and it would smell like something earthy like sandalwood 

6. what’s the ultimate power ballad? don’t stop believing. im not even ashamed to admit that its a great song and i think the lyrics will stand the test of time

7. if you could be fluent in any dead language which would you choose? man i dont even know any.. 

9. you bolt upright in bed in the middle of the night - why? a weird dream. a loud noise. or something happened to someone i know. or someone is sending me a message in my brain 

8. how important are first impressions and are second chances earned or a given? i dont think first impressions are that deep and usually im right just by sensing someones vibe they dont even have to say or do anything. in that case second chances confirm or deny what i originally thought. as for myself i dont care about first impressions because im still me even when im in a bad or unsocial mood 

10. if you’re being completely honest with yourself - do you regret it? i dont regret anything ive done because im burdened by too many other things i have no control over
