#they’re all named after their geographic locations

I’m so tired of my physics lab group because it’s me and then a bunch of guys who went to the same Christian high school in the same town as my university and they just talk about guns all the time.
Today one guy was telling a story about his cousin who’s in Communications so the professors are more liberal so she has to deal with them “talking about pronouns and crap.” Same guy has a sticker on his phone that says “I support FREE SPEECH not ~POLITICAL CORRECTNESS~”
Of course they were all talking about the Citadel shooting in Nashville too and how the shooter was trans.
@the-starlight-papers
#idk if it’s better or worse than my engineering class with the professor who makes a decent number of off color jokes#and is constantly toeing the line of what would get him reported to administration#some guy in engineering class today literally said ‘I’m racist’ and even that professor was like 😬#engineering professor also told some kid who was mouthing off that ‘you make me wish I wasn’t pro life’#engineering professor then started joking that he was going to snap one day because of said kid and then asked us where we would run#I hate engineering sometimes because it’s majority male and majority white#so some people feel like they can just say anything#idk if I’ve mentioned this but I got to college in the south and my school has literally stopped naming residence halls after peopld#and also buildings#they’re all named after their geographic locations#ie Hilltop East and Hilltop West or South English Building#(those are all made up btw but the real ones are basically the same idea)#it also sucks sometimes because sometimes I’m in a student engineering team lab working on a project#and then the guy I’m in the lab working with alone is looking at a flyer for a transphobic speaker coming to campus#in the groupme for the organization that’s bringing him#and then I have to worry about is it safe for me to work on this project with this guy#and it’s been fine so far mostly because we either talk about the project or classes or nothing at all#and I don’t want to join the women in engineering clubs because I’m not a woman#and for my engineering team I’m worried I’ll be the token trans person and they’ll want to put me in their social media outreach or somethin#which maybe if we were back in my home state I’d agree#but here heck no#like I’m fine 95% of the time and then there’s the 5% of the time that makes me realize that what’s acceptable here is fucked up sometimes#and I should probably start standing up to some of these people and saying something#but also I have to keep working with these people and I want to make working with them as painless as possible#there’s been other things lately that have been fucked up too that are kinda specific to the point where I can’t share them here#but yeah#anyways psa to any NMS reading this#if you’re looking at going to a college that offers really generous full rides to all NMS#think about why they’re so desperate to get good student to come to their school

Conlanging Issues: A Compendium
NOTE: This question was submitted before the Nov 1, 2023 reopening and may not adhere to all rules and guidelines. The ask has been abridged for clarity.
Most of my questions are about linguistics. […] One of the major locations in my story is a massive empire with cultural inspirations ranging from North Africa in the far south to Mongolia/Russia in the far north […] The middle region is where the capital is and is the main root of culture, from which Ive been taking inspiration from Southwest Asia […], but most notably southern regions of India. I've tried to stick to the way cities are named in Sanskrit-based languages but added the names of stars to the front (because the prevalent religion of this region worships the stars [...]). So Ive ended up with names like Pavoprayag, Alyanaga, Alkaiduru, Alcorpura, Cygnapete, etc. Is this a consistent naming system or should I alter it in some way? The empire itself is named the Arcana Empire since [...] each act of my story is named after a tarot card [...]. Another region in my story is based more on parts of South China and North Vietnam, so I've tried to stick to names with a Chinese origin for that. I understand the significance of family names in southwest [sic] Asia, so I wanted to double check [...]. They have only two short given names. Based on the birth order of the child, the first half of the name comes from the fathers family and the second half from the mothers family. It is seen as disrespectful not to use both names because using only one is seen as denouncing that side of your family. Thus I have names like Su Yin, Dai Jun, and Yi Wen for some of the characters from this region, and the city itself that they are from is named Bei Fen. On the other hand, Im having further trouble naming characters. […] Ive been trying to give my human characters names from real human cultures to distinguish them from the website-generated names of say, orcs, elves, dwarves, etc, but I think I should change many of the names Ive used to be more original and avoid fracturing real world cultures for the sake of my worldbuilding. […] Im still very weak in the linguistics area (even after four years of French, sigh) and am having trouble finding where to read about naming patterns so I can make new ones up. I read your naming guides but am still having trouble on where to start for specific languages. […] Im trying to look into Sanskrit, Turkish, and Persian specifically.
You're Going Too Broad
In my opinion, you’re casting too wide a net. You mentioned looking into Sanskrit, Turkish, and Persian to develop fantasy names. These languages are very different from one another, so unless you’re using them separately for very different parts of your world, it will be hard to draw inspiration from them in a way that makes sense. You’re taking on a huge amount of research in order to worldbuild cultures that span a massive geographical area (basically all of North Africa and Asia?) and have very little in common. Are you sure you want to take on that task?
I could see it being more manageable if most of your story is set in a small region of this world, which you will then research in depth to make sure you’re being as specific as possible.
Taking Persian as an example, you’ll have to decide whether you want to use Old Persian, Middle Persian, or Modern Persian. Each of these comes with a different alphabet and historical influences. They’re also associated with different periods of time and corresponding cultural and social markers. Once you’ve decided exactly when and where you want to start from, you can then expand the borders of your area of focus. For example, if you’ve decided to draw inspiration from Achaemenid Persia, you can then look at the languages that were spoken in the Achaemenid Empire. A quick Google search tells me that while Old Persian was the empire’s official language, they also used Aramaic, Akkadian, Median, Greek, and Elamite (among, I’m sure, many many others and many more regional variations). Further research into each of these will give you ethnic groups and bordering nations that you can draw more inspiration from to expand out your worldbuilding.
Don’t forget to make sure you’re staying within the same time period in order to keep things consistent. It’s a lot of work, and this is only for a small portion of the continent-spanning worldbuilding you’re trying to do.
You can get away with painting the rest of the continent in broad strokes without too much depth if the story doesn’t go there and you don’t have any main characters from those parts of the world. Otherwise, you’ll need to put this same level of detail into your worldbuilding for the area with Turkish-inspired names, and again for the area with Sanskrit-inspired names, and so on.
I know this isn’t what you were asking, but I honestly have a hard time helping you figure out where to start because your ask is so broad I don’t quite know where I would start myself. So, this is my advice: focus down on one region and time period and go from there. Feel free to write back once you’ve picked a narrower focus that we could help you with.
- Niki
So there’s logistical issues in regards to your naming system for southern China-coded regions. One issue is history: mainly on how there is not simply one language in China but multiple due to having a lot of ethnic groups and the size of China. South China in particular has different dialects and languages than the North as seen in this map of Chinese languages and dialects. There’s also how historically Mandarin was not the official language until 1913 in China and historical China saw vast changes in territory dependent on the dynasty. Before then, Mandarin was primarily a northern Chinese language based in Beijing while southern China had its own languages, dialects, and dynamics. Not to mention, historical China saw an evolution of language just like English has Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, and Modern English. For instance, Vietnam was once part of China during the Tang Dynasty and at another point, it was not part of China.
-Mod Sci
If You’re Borrowing Whole Words or Elements, Research More
The other issue is inconsistency with the cultures you’re deriving this conlang from. In regards to “two given names,” the Chinese name I was given was one syllable and then I would have a last name that was also one syllable. There’s also how not every family is perfect. Not every marriage is sanctioned and some children may come from single parents. Some families may not cooperate with marriage and sometimes children may be abandoned with unknown parents. There does not seem to be contingencies for these names under this conlang system.
The main problem with conlangs is that one needs to truly understand the languages one is drawing from. Tolkein managed to create conlangs due to training in linguistics. Mandarin is already a difficult language with multiple tones, and trying to use it for conlangs without knowledge of how Mandarin works or a good foundation in linguistics is just a Sisyphean endeavor.
-Mod Sci
Four years of French wouldn’t have taught you about linguistics as a science or anything about the language families you’ve listed - Indo-Iranian, Sino-Tibetan, and Turkic, nor any Asian naming conventions. I agree with Niki that you need to narrow down your research.
Pur/pura means city in Sanskrit (ex: Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur). Prayag is a place where pilgrimages are done. Naga isn’t a place name in Sanskrit (google says it means snake), nagar is and it means town. X Nagar is a very common name for places (Ex: Rajinder Nagar). Many cities in Karnataka have names ending in uru (Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Tumakuru, etc) but the language of Karnataka is Kannada - a Dravidian language and completely different family from Sanskrit (Indo-Aryan). I’m not sure where “pete” came from. “Bad” and “vaal” are common suffixes for places too (Ex: Faisalabad, Allahabad). A disclaimer that I do not speak Sanskrit, I speak Punjabi, which is a descendant of Sanskrit and in the same linguistic family (Indo-Aryan languages).
- SK
Also, This Is Not…Really Conlanging.
Hi OP. Linguistics refers to the science of studying how languages work, not the discipline of learning languages. And nothing shows that gap more than how you have thus far approached constructing fictional languages and toponyms.
The reason why Sci and SK have a lot to say about your place names is because they don't resonate—you have borrowed whole words into your toponyms (place names) from a variety of languages—without an accurate understanding of what these words mean, how they’re pronounced, where they’re derived from—and expected them to work together. I suggest you read the links below on why conlanging is not as simple as choosing some languages and mashing their IRL words together:
Why Using Random Languages Wholesale in your Fantasy is a Bad Idea
Pitfalls of Mashing Countries and Languages in Coding
In your city names, for example, you’re using star names from multiple languages that use different sets of sounds represented by different sets of historical spelling rules. “Cygn-” and “Arcana” stick out like a sore thumb—the fact that one “c” is /s/ and one is /k/ is an obvious flag that they are Latin-derived English borrowings. This is because spelling rules were created in Middle English to make sense of the mix of “c” pronunciations across words of Indo-European origin due to a historical split called the Centum-Satem division. This is a phenomenon that is very specific to our world history, and to the history of English at that. Ironically, in your attempt to avoid stock fantasy names (which also often fall into the Latin-derived English pit), you are taking the exact same approach to naming.
Like Niki said, your selections are far too broad to code under a single umbrella. Do you expect that whatever language that city name came from runs the full gamut of sound inventory & spelling variety that spans multiple continents and hundreds of languages? Because that’s not how languages work. (And yes, I mean hundreds. Indigenous languages and linguistic diversity are a thing. See Niki’s note about just the languages in Persia. And nation-states bulldozing over those languages and pretending it’s just one language is a thing. See Sci’s note about China.) I haven't even talked about the variation in morphology (how words are formed) or syntax (sentence structure).
Please just read or re-read my guide on “naming conlangs” in this post and start from there.

“ Is Palestine Really for the Jews?”
youtube
"O God, strengthen them with Your victory and power."
Palestine_isn’t_my issue “ is trending on twitter# "
I can’t hide from you the amount of ignorance that provoked me under this hashtag from some Arabs and Muslims
Knowledge is easy to find, but the truth is very challenging to discover
In this video, we won't be discussing politics, AT ALL
Instead, we’ll talk about history and delve into the depths of it
? Because we want to know, could Palestine really be for the Jews
We must understand somethings first
Israel; is the name of our Prophet Jacob, peace be upon him
The Israelites; are the descendants of Jacob, peace be upon him
Meaning; they’re the people of our master Jacob, peace be upon him
"As for the Jews; they are those who follow the Jewish religion, "Judaism
Zionism: is a movement that aims to create a homeland for Jewish people in Palestine
These are the four terminologies that we must discern the distinctions among to comprehend the nomenclature
? "the Holy Land”
In short, because God Almighty blessed this geographical area
And passes it on to His prophets, generation after generation
He ordained the Holy Land and the Al-Aqsa Mosque as the charge of every dispatched prophet
!!Of course, you know what we are going to do
We’ll go back in time to know the story from the beginning
"2500-3000 BC"
The beginning of the second era of humanity
after the flood, only Noah's three sons were destined to have children, as God decreed offspring for them
Japheth, Ham, and Shem
Noah's three sons had the responsibility of rebuilding humanity
As each of them settled in a specific location on earth
And Shem went to Yemen
He built the city of Sanaa
The descendants of Shem started to disperse, giving rise to various peoples and civilizations that originated from the Shemites
Some of their descendants include us the Arabs, as well as multiple other distinct groups, among whom were the Amalekites
God bestowed upon the Amalekite people a unique strength surpassing that of any ordinary human
To such an extent that the Almighty God specifically referenced them in the Quran, describing them as formidable
It is conveyed that their progenitor Amliq was the inaugural individual to articulate the Arabic tongue
The Amalekites grew in number and had to leave Yemen to build their cities elsewhere
They journeyed through the Arab region and settled there, with some eventually reaching Palestine
Therefore, the Arab Amalekites are historically regarded as the earliest inhabitants of the Palestinian lands
And they identified themselves as Canaanites.
"1900-2000 BC"
The Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, resided in Iraq for a substantial part of his life before being compelled to leave and undertake his journey of emigration
So God inspired him to go to the Holy Land, which is Palestine
God says:《And We rescued him and Lout (Lot) to the land which We have blessed for the 'Alamin (man kind and jinns).》[Surah Al-Anbiyaa: Verse 71]
Abraham, peace be upon him, was in Palestine, and his message was in Palestine
God inspired Abraham to take his wife Hagar and his son Ishmael, peace be upon them, and migrate with them to Mecca
He took them to Mecca and then returned to Palestine
This means that he travelled from Palestine to Mecca and from Mecca to Palestine because he had two homes
Pay attention to this point, we'll come back to it later
The Mecca house, where our Lady Hagar and Ishmael, peace be upon them, reside, and the Palestine house, home to Sarah and Isaac, peace be upon them
The offspring of Bani Isaac flourished and increased in number in Palestine.
Our Prophet Jacob, is one of the sons of Isaac, peace be upon them
Our Prophet Jacob lived in Palestine for the majority of his 130 years, expect for his final years, which were spent in Egypt
Due to the well-known story involving our Prophet Joseph, peace be upon him
Just to refresh your memory
Joseph's brothers, peace be upon him, were jealous of him and they ended up throwing him in a well
It wasn't until a passing caravan heading to Egypt discovered him in the well and brought him along with them
He worked as a slave there until he ascended to a position of great importance in Egypt
After a long time, Joseph's brothers, peace be upon him, found him.
And they apologized to him, because he had become the "Azeez" (dignitary) of Egypt
After the story ended, Jacob and Joseph’s brothers, peace be upon them, went to live with him in Egypt
The descendants of Jacob, peace be upon him, proliferated in Egypt, and they are known as
" The Israelites "
we know about the origin of the Israelites
The Jews today are claiming to be the descendants of the Israelites
, so I did a lot of research to find out who the real Israelites are
? and where they are today
“ 1200-1300 BC "
The Israelites lived in Egypt for their entire lives. They worked, traded, and had children in Egypt
Until a racist movement began by the Pharaohs against them
As the oppression and enslavement intensified on them
God sent His Prophet " Moses " , peace be upon him, to their aid
After what happened to Pharaoh and Moses, God commanded Moses to gather the Israelites and leave Egypt
And here the miracle of the sea parting happened, the sea split. Until they reached the land where they were heading
Moses told them God's command to reach the Holy Land, but the Israelites were worried about the Amalekites who lived there and how they would defeat them
They said, 《O Moses, indeed we will not enter it, ever, as long as they are within it; so go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here》[Surah Al-Maidah: Verse 24]
Due to their direct disobedience of God's command, they were compelled to wander in the desert for 40 years
Moses, peace be upon him, passed away, and those who had defied God's command also perished. A new generation, the children of Israel, emerged during this time
And over the new generation of the children of Israel, God sent His Prophet Joshua, peace be upon him
He readied them for a significant battle against the Amalekites, the residents of Palestine, who were described as having extraordinary physical attributes
Joshua, peace be upon him, instructed them that as they entered the Holy Land, God commanded them to utter "Hutta," which signifies, "O Lord, remove from us our sins and wrongdoings."
They went to the battlefield and a very great battle began between the Amalekites and the Israelites
Midway through the battle, the Prophet Joshua observed the sun beginning to set, and he became concerned that this might lead to their defeat.
God responded to Joshua's call and commanded the sun to stand still and not move
One of the miracles of the Prophet Joshua is that he literally made time stop
God granted victory to the Israelites, and when the time came to fulfil the promise requiring them to prostrate and say "Hutta"
They mocked God's command and the His Prophet, opting to crawl and utter different words instead of prostrating as instructed. They engaged in wordplay
In general, they lived in the Holy Land for 200 years, and during this time, whenever God sent them a prophet, they stoned the prophets to death
They were called the killers of the prophets, because they killed nearly seventy prophets on that stone
God was angry with them and expelled them from the Holy Land, and they dispersed for a long period of time
“ 900-1000 BC “
Prophet Samuel was chosen by God to assemble the Israelites and prepare them for a second conflict.
The war was led by King Talut (Saul), and they gathered 80,000 warriors from the Israelites and headed to the Holy Land
On the way, they stopped at the Jordan River to rest and prepare for war
Because God Almighty knows their nature, He put them to the test
God Almighty told them not to drink more than a sip of water from the river.
One sip....
a one water sip!!
... a one sip of water
Whoever drinks more than one sip of water will not fight with them
Of the 80,000, only 4,000 remain,
!? So from 80 to 4, how many
That means 76,000 warriors withdrew
Upon their arrival in the Holy Land, the remaining 4,000 soldiers assembled in a military formation to commence preparations for war.
From the opposite direction, they saw Jalut (Goliath), the ruler of the Amalekites.
As we mentioned, the Amalekites are much larger than us. So, you can imagine how enormous Jalut, their leader, must have been !!!
When the Israelites beheld the imposing presence of Goliath (Jalut) and his troops, they lost courage and retreated, leaving only 300 soldiers with Saul (Talut)
Among the soldiers of the Children of Israel was the Prophet David, peace be upon him, who killed Jalut, king of the Amalekites
They emerged victorious in the war and gained entry into the Holy Land. During that era, the land of Palestine was governed by the Prophet David, peace be upon him, and his son Solomon, peace be upon him, succeeded him in rulership
“300 BC”
Alexander the Great. He was a young man who had recently inherited the rule of an expansive and mighty kingdom, complete with a well-trained army, following his father's passing
He embarked on a journey to conquer lands, seemingly as if it were a game. His conquests extended to regions like Iraq, Egypt, India, Africa, and more, eventually reaching Palestine, which also fell under his rule
After a time, he contemplated relinquishing rule to his cousin, and Jerusalem eventually came under the dominion of the Byzantines.
" 100 BC "
During this period, Palestine was under Byzantine rule, and the Israelites lived there as regular citizens without any special status
Nevertheless, they made the choice to initiate a revolt against the Byzantine rulers with the intent of seizing power. Naturally, the king did not favour their actions
In response to their rebellion, the king commanded the assembly of the Israelites from across the world and decreed their utter extermination. This marked the final chapter of the Israelites presence worldwide
We've reached a crucial point that's important for Muslims to understand. As we've discussed, all the prophets we talked about are descendants of Abraham through his son Isaac.
The Israelites are indeed descendants of Isaac, peace be upon him. God granted them numerous chances, and their disobedience is recounted in the Qur'an.
Prophethood transitioned from the lineage of Isaac to that of Ishmael, and the final prophet to emerge from the children of Ishmael is our Prophet
Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him
“621 AD”
During the miraculous Night Journey and Miraj, Gabriel, peace be upon him, didn't immediately escort Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, to heaven, directly Instead, they first journeyed to Al-Aqsa
This is the first message from God Almighty to his prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him
The Prophet Muhammad entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque and beheld all the prophets and messengers, ranging from the eldest to the youngest, gathered there
Gabriel instructed him, saying, "Pray, O Muhammad." In this moment, Gabriel didn't select Adam, the father of humanity, or even Abraham, the father of the prophets. Instead, he chose Muhammad, peace be upon him, for this special role
In my view, this conveys a distinct message to Muhammad's followers, indicating a strong connection between Palestine and the Muslim community
" 636 AD "
After Omar bin Al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, assumed leadership, he led the conquest of Jerusalem, marking the city's official transition under Islamic rule, a status it has retained to the present day
" 1099 AD "
The Romans arrived and took control of Palestine, dubbing it the “Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem”
"1174 AD"
Saladin al-Ayyubi decisively ousted the Romans and restored Muslim control over the land.
"1800 AD”
Over the course of history, despite various rulers and transitions, Islamic rule persisted in Palestine, and its identity as an Islamic state remained undisputed
Until the year 1800 AD, a figure named Napoleon emerged, asserting his belief that Palestine was rightfully his
He promised the Jews that the lands of Palestine would be theirs. In reality, he couldn’t achieve that, but he undoubtedly planted the Zionist idea
" 1855 AD ”
A Jewish individual named Moses Montefiore purchased the first piece of land in Palestine. Despite his limited impact, this is often considered the first settlement in Palestine
“ 1897 AD ”
A gathering took place in Switzerland, uniting Jews and their supporters, were they collectively established Zionism as an official concept in written documents
“ 1914 AD ”
During World War I, as Britain was actively involved and required financial support, a wealthy Jewish family called “Rothschild” residing in Britain played a significant role in financing the war effort
" 1917 AD ” *
Following the war's conclusion, in gratitude to the Rothschild family, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, an official decision from the British government expressing support for Jewish land rights in Palestine
Subsequent to the promulgation of this promise, Jewish immigration to Palestine began, and with audacity, they declared, "This is our land, and we care not what others think.”
Throughout this period, tensions between Palestinians and Zionists endured, primarily driven by the significant immigration led by Jewish Zionists
" 1946 AD ”
Britain felt the weight of the responsibility that was on it, so it told America to act in its place, and that it quit, and good bye
As a result, in that same year, the United States made a decision to partition the land between Palestinians and Zionists.
They designated 56.5% of the Palestinian lands to the Zionists, meaning a larger share for them and a smaller share for the land's original owners
“ 1947 AD ”
America and the Soviet Union jointly made the official decision to recognize Israel as a state. “Oh, they wish, this recognition is just for them”
The Nakba commenced, with the aim of erasing the Muslim's right to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque
" 1948 AD ”
In just one year, more than 750,000 Muslims were tragically forced from their homes, and the obliteration of over 500 villages, along with their inhabitants.
Even their unjust partitioning of Palestinian lands was never truly acknowledged. They would enter any house, displace its inhabitants, and boldly claim it as their own
“1967 AD ”
The situation escalated to the point where the Zionists controlled 80% of Palestinian lands, leaving the Palestinians with only 20% of their own territory, a state of affairs that persists from then until the present day
For 76 long years, from that day until today, there have been individuals who lived and passed away without experiencing the taste of freedom
For 76 years, and it's disheartening that the word "humanity" has been notably absent, this is a test of our faith and what we truly believe in
GOD will ask about your position. I swear to you that the issue is not political at all
Though we might lack direct influence,
staying united as a sincere and focused nation remains a powerful stance in facing these issues
Tell the truth and not what the media wants,
be aware and know why this is your issue in the first place,
defend with your tongue because this is what we are capable of doing.
In the end, O God, give them a mighty victory

Rock Sound, 2005 - Interview with Till and Schneider
Anyone who’s witnessed Rammstein’s pyrotastic live show will know they aren’t a band to do things by halves. So maybe rock sound shouldn’t be surprised by the surreal trail of events that unfolds during the press day for new album ‘Rosenrot’. Arriving in Paris with some vague instructions to head to the Place de la Bastille and find a double-decker bus, it all fells worryingly like the plot from a bad James Bond film. Luckily, any fears about being unable to follow such a cryptic lead are calmed on spotting a bright red London bus which, in case it wasn’t given away by its conspicuous geographical location, is helpfully plastered with Rammstein album artwork. Today the bus will were a dual purpose; both transporting us to a top secret interview site and acting as a pretty ingenious promotional tool, as we drive through the city past several turned heads and dropped jaws.
Onboard, journalists from various European countries are initiated into an album listening session that’s shrouded in MI5-style secrecy. After signing a contract, each writer receives a sealed and numbered personal CD player containing a preview version of ‘Rosenrot’. Suffice to say, those who dare to break the seal and peek inside do so on pain of death. Well, probably. And it doesn’t end there.
Arriving at the interview venue — a boat moored on the bank of the River Seine — it seems Rammstein are intent on having us experience as many branches of the Parisian transport system as possible. It all ensures that the press are suitably bewildered, as well as just a little excited, when the time arrives to interview bands members Till Lindemann and Christoph Schneider. Really, you wouldn’t think it could get much weirder. But it does.
Both Lindemann and Schneider appear oddly indifferent to the day’s set-up, as if they’re old hands at sending journalists into a state of confusion before meeting them. Not that frontman Till really needs to try; he’s already knocked us hacks for six by granting several rare interviews this afternoon, and in person he looks every bit as imposing as his on stage characters. Thankfully though, he’s infinitely more good-humoured, and a listen to ‘Rosenrot’ reveals his increasing skill in channelling that quality into the songs.
The band’s fifth studio album continues to develop several of the themes from ‘Reise, Reise’ — namely the exchange of strict marching rhythms for dynamic rock riffs (‘Rosenrot’, ‘Zerstören’), and a new-fund affinity for ballads (‘Feuer & Wasser, ‘Ein Lied’). Yet it also comes with a few major surprises, most noticeably ‘a party anthem about driving into a brothel’, titled ‘Te Quiero Puta’. As if diverting from their trademark sound with cartoon noises and mariachi instrumentation in this effort weren’t enough, the biggest shock comes from Till, who switches his usually foreboding vocals into Spanish to hilarious effect.
Schneider picks up the story: « Till could never find good lyrics for that song, » he recalls. « It was a bit sad because we always liked it very much music-wise. Then he came up with this Spanish, which I absolutely didn’t like, especially with all the trumpets. But sometimes you have to get used to ideas that you don’t find so cool, because they might have a little potential. »
Consequently, ‘Te Quiero Puta’ is one of the best songs Rammstein have written, not just because it shatters every preconception they’ve built up with previous albums, but also because it’s executed so well. Maybe that’s down to the fact that when Rammstein go off on a creative tangent, they aren’t driven by a need for attention, but by genuine curiosity. Indeed, while ‘Te Quiero Puta’ was inspired by a love of Spanish culture that Till developed while exploring Costa Rica, ‘Mann gegen Mann’ was born from an equally eye-opening experience.
The singer explains: « That’s a pro-homosexual song. It’s based on an experience I had when we went out in Berlin with another band that had two gay members. We went to a gay bard and I was just impressed by how fast they made contact with other men, how there was little bit of communication and then they went home together. I thought it was quite enviable, especially when you compare it to what happens between a man and a woman and all the ritualistic behavior. They just had a one-night stand and nothing more. I thought there was something poetic about that. »
There’s nothing all that unusual about Rammstein dealing in potentially controversial subject matter, as the gory inspiration for ‘Mein teil’ showed. Even so, it’s hard to escape the impression that ‘Rosenrot’ is their most experimental album to date.
According to the band, that probably has something to do with they way in which it came together. The release of ‘Rosenrot’ comes just a year after ‘Reise, Reise’, meaning a significant change to their normal working cycle.
« We’ve never released another album so quickly," says Till. « Usually there’s the album release in summer or early autumn, then we tour through autumn, winter and spring and then go into working on the next release in the autumn. But after making ‘Reise, Reise’ we had four songs left which hadn’t fitted in with the rest of the album. So we decided then that we would make another CD straight after ‘Reise, Reise’ so that we could use them. »
Although they could have released the songs as an EP, there was another obstacle to overcome. During the making of ‘Reise, Reise’, Rammstein decided they would take a six-month « creative break » when they eventually came off the road in 2005. That meant either leaving fans with a long wait before another album arrived, or working incredibly hard to extend those four songs into a full release before disappearing. With Schneider stressing that the leftover tracks were « good songs, not just B-sides », they took the latter option and began work on ‘Rosenrot’ under what he describes as « a lot of pressure due to the time constraints ».
But with both ‘Te Quiero Puta’ and ‘Mann gegen Mann’ among the new songs penned in that period, it was evidently also a positive time creatively.
« The songs are from two different periods so I think that makes the album a bit outstanding, » comments Schneider. « It’s not like the last two Rammstein albums, but it’s a good album. »
It turned out so well, in fact, that they changed their original plan to call it ‘Reise, Reise Vol. 2’ and graced it with its own title. That title continues their fascination with dark fairytales, echoing both an old story by the Brothers Grimm and a story that Till recalls about « a girl who sees a red flower on the mountainside and tells her lover. He tries to get it for her but he dies ». Nonetheless, the album as a whole also marks the end of an era for Rammstein.
« For me, this is the closing of a chapter for the band, » says Schneider. « Everybody needs a break, they need a bit of distance from this band and time to look forward and ask, ‘Where am I?’ And, ‘What do I want to do?’ We need to find other ways of being inspired. »
Consequently, there will be no tour to support the release of ‘Rosenrot’, as the sextet head their separate ways to recharge and reflect. After more than 10 years of following the same work schedule, the members of Rammstein are looking forward to spending time with family, travelling, and having the chance to recover from an exhausting promotional itinerary. They initially discovered the benefits of taking time out while making ‘Reise, Reise’ — when tensions carried over from previous album ‘Matter’ came to a head and forced them to put work on hold. As Schneider states, it’s vital to the « balance of democracy » within the band that they get away from each other now and again.
However, with this personal time now coming at the expense of a new live spectacular, are they concerned that ‘Rosenrot’ won’t get the exposure it deserves?
« Maybe that will affect something, » allows the drummer. « But we’ve been on tour for almost a year now and we’re tired. Of course our live show is a big part of our promotion, but what can you do? You can’t keep on at the same pace, running and running like a hamster on a wheel. »
A much-needed holiday? The end of an era? You might wonder if ‘Rosenrot’ is shaping up to be Rammstein’s parting shot…
« I have a good feeling, » begins Schneider. « I think Rammstein has the potential to continue. But after 11 or so years you have to be careful. It’s easy to over-do it, for it to get boring and for you not to reach your potential anymore. We’ll see. If it doesn’t happen anymore I’ll do something else. »
Thankfully, Till is more assured about future plans, insisting Rammstein will start work on another album and tour after their break. What’s more, the excited singer suggests we can expect an even greater visual extravaganza on their return — if he gets his way.
« Personally, I’d just sing two songs and then have two hours of pyro! » he laughs.
There’s no doubt it’ll be worth the wait.

I always knew my time in this city would be temporary.
Since the very beginning, I knew.
Temporary means there is a future in which things will be different. It means not forever. It means limited, timed, fleeting in the grand scheme of things.
But what does Temporary mean to a child who is trying to get as far away from their pain as possible, no matter the cost? What does Temporary mean to someone who isn’t truly considering their future because they don’t see well enough past their pain to think they deserve one?
When you don’t feel worthy of a future, when you can’t envision one for yourself, when everyone else around you has goals with names and locations and salaries but you don’t, it makes you feel…Temporary.
What happens when your ambivalence about the future gets you stuck in Temporary and it starts to feel Permanent? What if you don’t realize this until it feels too late, and other people are involved in your life? People you care about very much, but who don’t understand it?
From the time I moved across the country to attend a school I knew I would hate until about a year ago, I operated only from a place of pain. I was driven by grudge, by spite, by fear. I ran because I wanted better than that for myself but grudge, spite, and fear are like old friends that tend to overstay their welcome. If you don’t suck it up and do the work to spell it out for them, they stay exactly where they are. I didn’t want to go through that ordeal, so I just waited patiently for it to happen. But they stayed. And stayed. And it turned into an ordeal of its own.
I had outlets for these feelings when I was growing up. I relied on them heavily, assuming they would always be there and available because they are a part of me. But as I stayed in this place of denial, both geographically and emotionally, those outlets closed off. You see, I am naturally a creature of joy, of exuberance, of creation. I make things, but not usually things you can see. I make things you can hear, things you can feel in a way that seeing doesn’t do justice.
This is the longest I’ve gone without making music. Without touching an instrument. Without keeping my voice in practice. Without wanting to. These devices that help to alchemize my pain and make it into something that can be witnessed by others, but no longer have a hold on my spirit, are collecting dust.
When you let your pain build up inside of you without healthy release, it will poison you. It will cloud your vision, physically and psychically. I feel like I’ve been living on an evil fucking cloud of pain and denial. I built my whole entire life on this cloud, and I was fine with that until the natural course of things reminded me that clouds dissipate. They’re Temporary.
I have a support system waiting for me on the ground, and all I have left to do is release control and know that they will catch me after my long, life-changing fall.
Goodbye, Oregon. Thank you.

CHAPTER 8
My opinion: the pacing of His·Story: History, Hiding Hers suffered because I couldn’t figure out how to balance character movement and historical context at the same time. The first few chapters were really heavy on some more minute detail (scene setting) which scale back a lot starting right about now. There will still be major moments of “You want sources? Enjoy this flood of supplementary information!” but it shouldn’t be quite so extreme.
We’re in territory where we’re looking at more of the character development (& the relationships between characters) rather than scene setting which has been so much fun to write, and I hope you all enjoy reading it!
For chapter 8, the major thing that I really was waffling back and forth on is where Easy overnighted (June 6th to June 7th). The show itself actually name drops where they go next (culoville) but finding it on any sort of map (past or present) was a hilariously herculean task that took me way too long.
I wanted to have a visual/geographic sense of what that looked like (for reference in terms of geography and time) but it was actually hilariously difficult to manage. Some of these locations aren’t really even towns or villages, they’re not even big enough to be considered a hamlet, so finding them is....interesting. That shows up more the next chapter & a few after that, but it was a part of why this chapter was framed the way it was.

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #LC11
Introductory post
Introduction to ‘Les Cinq’
Les Cinq dans la cité secrète – The Famous Five and the Secret of the Caves
Original publication date: 1976 (France), 1984 (UK)
Tumblr media
(Original cover by Jean Sidobre, 1976)
The Famous Five are donning their Indiana Jones hats to explore a hidden valley and discover an ancient civilisation. Neat!
~~~~~~
Plot summary:
(Disclaimer: All provided translations are my own.)
George is grumbling and griping about spending the holidays in the mountains instead of her beloved seaside. They’re all spending the summer in Blérac, a small village in a mountainous area*, on the advice of Mr Kirrin’s doctor who recommended this peaceful retreat away from the urban racket and crowded beaches. [(*) Note: The specific location is never stated in the text, but based on the toponymy and general geographic features, I would place the (fictional) village of Blérac in the Massif Central, in central France.]
After visiting the village and talking with the locals, the children hear a legend about nearby Mount Grindal, a supposedly hollow mountain pierced with underground passages and a hidden valley once inhabited by a foreign people that was subsequently swept away by a mysterious cataclysm, possibly an earthquake. The Five decide to occupy their holiday by investigating and untangling truth from legend.
They go to Grindal village on their bikes the next day, and get a few more details out of the miller’s daughter: the lost people were hunters, they were governed by a queen named Zulmée who had healing powers, and they knew how to make gold – they had a statue of their queen that was made out of solid gold and was revered like a goddess.
Tumblr media
(Alice, the miller’s daughter, tells the Five what she can remember from the legend)
[TRANSLATION: George: What did they live on? Alice: Grandpa said that we didn't know much about them. They went hunting, of course... Your Timothy reminds me of something: the dogs of the lost people didn't bark! Dick: They didn't?! Nonsense!]
Tumblr media
(Up Mount Grindal)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: The little group sets off. George (thinking): This cliff deserves to be studied closely! The entrance, even if collapsed or blocked, must be visible somewhere. Narrator: Shortly afterwards, the group reaches the summit of Mount Grindal. Alice: Isn't my country beautiful? George: Very beautiful! But not as beautiful as Kirrin! Timmy: Woof! Julian: Come on, it's time to get back.]
The Five get a final bit of information from Blérac’s schoolteacher the next day, who tells them that the valley name was named Temulka, which meant “rumbling water.” They make another trip to Mount Grindal and examine the mountain more closely; they do find a small cave, but it is both empty and a dead end. On their way out, they meet two young men, Philibert and Jean-Marcel, who are decidedly unpleasant and somewhat threatening (Jean-Marcel even brandishes a folding knife). They order the children not to come back in the area, a warning that the children do not intend to heed.
The Five continue their exploration of the mountain over the next few days, and have a few more altercations with Philibert and Jean-Marcel. The children do not understand their continuing hostility until they discover another cave filled with traps and snares, and they understand that Philibert and Jean-Marcel are poachers. The latter are relieved by the children's assurances that they are not interested in ratting them out, but Anne lets slip that they are looking for the lost valley. Philibert and Jean-Marcel don't really believe that the legend is real, but privately decide to keep an eye on the children just in case.
One night, the whole Kirrin family is shaken awake by an earthquake. No one is hurt but there is some material damage in the village.
Tumblr media
(After the earthquake)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: The earth finally stops shaking. Quentin: Let's get dressed and go down to the village. Maybe we can help! Narrator: A sorry sight awaits them, but no one has died. Anne: Could it happen again? Fanny: It's possible, but unlikely!]
The children spend the day helping the villagers before returning to Mount Grindal. The earthquake has caused a fissure to open in the first cave they’d found, and they come back the next day equipped with flashlights, a ball of string and a piece of chalk so as not to lose their way. They discover a room with a wall covered with cave paintings, then a crypt containing an altar, stone benches and abandoned oil lamps.
Tumblr media
(An astonishing discovery)
[TRANSLATION: George: Coloured engravings! Anne: Hunters with their dogs! Dick: Black silhouettes! Julian: Could they be the fabled extinct people? Anne: Let's split into two teams. That will double our chances. Narrator: The children resume their exploration. George: Let's keep on searching!]
Tumblr media
(The crypt and altar)
[TRANSLATION: Dick: There's another passage behind this stone altar, but it's too late to explore it! Let's join Julian and Anne. Narrator: After telling them about their discovery, Dick and George return to the crypt with Julian and Anne. Julian: Marvellous! Anne: Wonderful! Narrator: The next day, the Five decide to explore further, but... George: Philibert and Jean-Marcel!]
Further exploration leads them to a seemingly dead end, but they can hear water noises behind the wall, and remember that the valley was named Temulka, for “rumbling water.” Knowing that they are close to their goal, they fumble along the rock until finally, Timmy unwittingly triggers an opening mechanism.
Tumblr media
(How to get in? 🤔)
[TRANSLATION: Dick: We're literally up against the wall... We could try shouting "Open sesame" like Ali Baba! George: Shut up, you chatterbox! You'd better help me examine this rock. Narrator: Everyone pitches in, even Timmy. Narrator (last panel): Suddenly!...]
The Five enter the Lost Valley, which is illuminated by a crack in the rock in the ‘ceiling’. A waterfall flows into a river that runs through the valley, and the children can see the remains of houses on the other side of the river.
Tumblr media
(The hidden valley!)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: Julian, cautious, tries out the opening mechanism of the wall, first on one side, then on the other: a simple pressure at ground level is enough to set it in motion. The Five cross the secret threshold. With each step, they hear the roar of water, then suddenly... George: Temulka! Anne: Hurray! Timmy: Woof!]
Tumblr media
(A spectacular view)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: A wide crack at the top of the ‘ceiling’ lets the daylight in. George: Look over there, houses! Quick, let's go down! Dick: The secret city of the lost people.]
The Five cross the river by stepping between the waterfall and the cliff.
Tumblr media
(Crossing the waterfall)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: Followed by her cousins and the faithful Timmy, George heads for the waterfall. George (thinking): In some travelogues, I read that it was sometimes possible to crawl between a waterfall and the cliff. Narrator: Thanks to George's memory, imagination and daring, they soon get past the obstacle.]
They explore the dry-stone houses and guess that the lost people was swept away by the river flooding after an earthquake. They come back over the next few days equipped with picks and shovels and quickly find a number of artifacts, including pottery and household utensils made of polished or carved stone, and several gold jewellery items such as a bracelet, a necklace, amulets, an earring and even a violin bow made of gold. Delighted with their findings, the children are now determined to find the legendary golden statue.
However, their enthusiasm is cut short when they find evidence that Philibert and Jean-Marcel have discovered the entrance to the lost valley, although they haven’t figured out the opening mechanism yet. Julian, Dick and Anne want to tell Uncle Quentin, but George doesn’t want the authorities to invade their playground before they can find the statue. Julian compromises and allows her one more day.
At long last, they notice that the cliff behind the waterfall is full of crevices, and that's where they finally find the statue.
Tumblr media
(After many days searching, the statue is finally recovered!)
[TRANSLATION: Anne: How beautiful! George: It's beautiful, but given its size, we’re going to have trouble moving it. Julian: Give me a hand! George: If it's not as heavy as we thought, it's because it's hollow. Anne: Hollow?]
Contrary to legend, the statue is not made of solid gold, but hollow, and contains handwritten scrolls, probably recounting the history of the lost people. The Five are celebrating their victory when they are caught unawares by Philibert and Jean-Marcel, accompanied by two accomplices (Julien and Joseph), who have been helping them keep an eye on the Five all this time. Dick, Anne and George are overpowered after a valiant fight, but Julian is still wrestling Philibert when the latter loses his balance and falls into the river. Philibert can't swim very well and calls for help. Julian organises the rescue and, with all of them working together, including George and Timmy boldly jumping into the water, they manage to save him. Philibert apologises and promises to be a “good guy... like [George]” from now on. The statue is brought to Blérac, the children tell George's parents their extraordinary tale, and the authorities are informed. A museum will soon open in Grindal.
Cover art through the ages:
(Disclaimer: This is not an exhaustive list; sometimes the dates are difficult to pinpoint; and I have purposefully not included editions that re-used similar cover art, with differences only in layout and font style.)
Tumblr media
(Cover art by Jean Sidobre, Hachette, 1982 – minor layout changes compared to the original 1976 version)
Tumblr media
(Yves Beaujard, Hachette, 1989 – the hidden valley! I think the Five are all looking so devastated because they can’t see any way to cross the river and reach the houses on the other side… Also, please note that, despite the sky blue background, this scene does NOT occur outside but inside the moutain!)
Tumblr media
(Paul Gillon, Hachette, 1989 – adventurous explorers! I would advise Julian to cover up his camera before getting nearer that waterfall!)
Tumblr media
(Munch and Prunier, Hachette, 2000 – I love these warm tones, they give such a good atmospheric feel!)
Tumblr media
(Frédéric Rébéna, Hachette, 2016 – behind the waterfall)
Thanks for reading!
Shine Online: Harnessing SEO Benefits For Your Cleaning Services Business
Tumblr media
In an increasingly digital world, having a strong online presence is essential for businesses of all types, including cleaning services. When potential customers are looking for a cleaning company, they’re likely to start their search online. This is where Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes into play. In this article, we will explore how harnessing the benefits of SEO can help your cleaning services business shine online and attract more clients.
1. Improved Visibility in Search Engines
The primary goal of SEO is to make your cleaning business more visible in search engine results. By optimizing your website and content, you can increase your chances of appearing on the first page when potential customers search for services like “house cleaning in [your location].” Higher visibility means more exposure to your target audience, which can lead to increased inquiries and bookings.
2. Targeted Traffic
SEO allows you to attract highly targeted traffic. Instead of casting a wide net and hoping for random visitors, you can focus your efforts on specific keywords and phrases related to your cleaning services. This means targeting keywords such as “residential cleaning,” “office cleaning,” or “deep cleaning services.” By aligning your content with these keywords, you’ll attract visitors who are actively seeking the services you offer, making them more likely to convert into paying customers.
3. Showcase Your Services
Your website serves as a digital storefront for your cleaning business. It’s where potential clients get their first impression of your services. By optimizing your website with clear and detailed information about your offerings, you provide a comprehensive resource for visitors. Include descriptions of your services, pricing, and any special offers you might have. This transparency helps build trust and encourages potential clients to reach out.
4. Client Testimonials
Client testimonials and reviews are powerful social proof that can influence potential customers. Encourage your satisfied clients to leave reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and your website. Positive reviews not only boost your credibility but also enhance your SEO. Search engines value user-generated content, and highly rated businesses tend to rank better in search results.
5. Local SEO for Enhanced Visibility
Local SEO is particularly vital for cleaning services businesses, as customers typically seek services within their geographic area. To improve your local SEO, ensure that your business is listed on Google My Business and other local directories. Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number) information across these platforms is crucial for local search engine rankings. It will help your cleaning business appear in local search results, drawing in clients in your service area.
6. High-Quality Content
Creating valuable and relevant content is key to SEO success. Regularly publish blog posts, articles, and cleaning tips on your website. This content can be related to cleaning techniques, DIY solutions, and advice on maintaining a clean home or office. Not only does this content engage your audience, but it also provides opportunities to incorporate relevant keywords, further boosting your website’s SEO.
7. Mobile Optimization
With a growing number of people using smartphones and tablets to search for services, a mobile-responsive website is a must. Google and other search engines prioritize mobile-friendly sites in their rankings. A responsive design ensures that your website looks and functions well on various devices, improving the user experience and boosting your SEO.
8. Social Media Integration
While not a direct SEO factor, a strong presence on social media platforms can indirectly impact your online visibility. Share your cleaning tips, before-and-after photos, and blog posts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Encourage your followers to engage with your content. Social signals such as likes, shares, and comments can have a positive influence on your website’s SEO.
9. Monitor and Adapt
SEO is an ongoing process that requires constant monitoring and adaptation. Tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console provide valuable insights into your website’s performance. Keep an eye on your rankings, the keywords that drive traffic, and the pages that are the most popular. Make adjustments to your SEO strategy based on the data you collect to stay competitive in the digital landscape.
In conclusion, harnessing the benefits of SEO can make your cleaning services business shine online. It enhances your online visibility, attracts targeted traffic, and establishes your expertise in the cleaning industry. By optimizing your website, creating high-quality content, and engaging with potential clients on social media, you can leverage SEO to grow your business and stand out in a competitive market. Remember that SEO is an ongoing effort, and staying up-to-date with the latest trends is crucial for maintaining your competitive edge in the ever-evolving world of digital marketing.
Wash And Fold Service Will Save You Time
If you want to incorporate some time into your schedule, try the wash and fold service in Toronto at your local laundromat. Many services follow specific guidelines, and some provide dry cleaning services in addition. Locating a location near your work or home will be relatively easy; however, getting one that can be picked and delivered can be the best in time and convenience.
Tumblr media
It should be laid out on their website or a display in their store. However, in case you need clarification on it, you should ask. The item you are saving could be yours. It is advisable to inquire whether they offer dry cleaning or other services since this saves you from having to go to another place if they offer them. Of course, you should always inquire when your clothing is cleaned so that you don’t have to waste an unnecessary trip to return when they’re finished.
Finding a company that provides washing and folding services across the globe is as easy as searching with your preferred search engine. If searching for “wash and fold service near me Toronoto “ doesn’t yield local businesses, consider including the city name or other geographic modifiers near a certain landmark. This can help reduce your search results to locate businesses that are local to you.
If you truly want to save yourself the most effort and time washing, you should find a service that can collect your laundry and drop it off to you after it’s completed. In most cases, the service is at no cost or is included in the listed cost. If it’s not, you should consider how much your time and energy are worth. This is particularly important when you have children that you might be required to take to the laundromat to take care of while you wash your clothes.
Nearly everyone could use, at the very least, more time every day. Because we all live the same amount of time and a day, figuring out ways to maximize your time is essential. The search for time-saving solutions is among the most effective options. Utilizing washing and folding laundry service, particularly when paired with delivery service, is a time-saver you could not afford to do without.
cont. with @bornbreathless.
“Char.”
It comes as easy as breathing (ha!) these days, a constant correction that she knows is mostly pointless where Arno is concerned. He'll use her full name as often as he wants to, whether she likes it or not; doesn't seem to have figured out that it's one of several reasons she enjoys irritating him so much.
Her name is the least of her concerns at the moment, though, and Char can't help but frown faintly as she watches him wind the bandage around her arm. “I...really? I don't...I don't remember that at all,” she says uncertainly. It isn't the first time she's managed to get herself into some kind of trouble, not even the first time she's turned up on someone's doorstep with some stupid injury, but it's the first time she hasn't remembered it happening.
It's...unsettling.
“I, uh, I'm sorry. I'd say I didn't mean to worry you, but I guess I can't say what I don't remember, you know?” It's a weak joke, testament to how wrong she feels at the moment, and Char fidgets awkwardly with her uninjured hand. “I didn't say anything when I got here?”
Tumblr media
“  intriguing,  ”   was it truly? at times there’s great difficulty holding back the egotistical smirk  ( one which now threatened to break the worry façade built upon decades of lies )  when char sprouts her mind on the matter. it never ceased to amuse him - just how easy it was to take away excruciating memories of the pain he’s inflicted and have her believe she simply appeared at his doorstep pleading for help. it’s a wonder she hadn’t caught onto any foul play, surely it was suspicious enough? that he was suspicious enough.
or perhaps it was due to her reckless nature which caused so much harm to herself anyways that this wasn’t outside the usual. the lands close by were fairly dangerous yet full of interesting and powerful pokémon - it could be a normal occurrence for her to run after them or at least do some training for her own gym, given their geographical locations the two were close as well.
regardless, bloodied steel of ceremonial daggers were now hidden from view just as it always was. arno focusses on finishing up medical care --- he wasn’t that much of a monster, he thinks, infected wounds were something else entirely when they’re done by yourself --- and pats down the bandages when he’s done, pretend worried gaze looking over char’s confused features.   “  no,  you  came  to  my  door  -  before  promptly  passing  out  onto  my  nice  clean  clothes,  might  i  add.  did  you  get  attacked  by  some  wild  pokémon  again?  perhaps  a  ghost  type?  i’ve  heard  of  some  in  the  mountains  with  the  ability  to  steal  people’s  memories.  ”
Brown dog tick
Tumblr media
#Brown dog tick pro
However, for a large number of these ticks to manifest in a residential home, usually a dog is necessary as a host. Once the larvae hatch and begin searching for food, however, they come out in the open on furniture, dog bedding, and baseboards.ĭogs are the preferred host for these ticks, but they will seek other mammals – including humans – if no dogs are available. Female ticks like to lay their eggs in above-ground cracks and crevices, so they might be harder to spot. Its preference for warm, dry environments allows it to thrive in residential homes, notably near dog kennels. The brown dog tick is unusual among tick species because it’s able to spend its whole lifecycle indoors. In Connecticut and northeastern states, they’re found almost exclusively indoors. In the United States, they’re prevalent in the southeast, notably Florida. These ticks are distributed all over the world but thrive in warmer climates. Adults that have not consumed a blood meal may live for as long as 200 days.The brown dog tick, or Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is one of the most common tick species found on dogs. It takes about 60 days to complete a generation if conditions are optimal. Adult females lay a mass of 1,000 - 3,000 eggs after taking a blood meal, and eggs are often laid around: Females can often be seen climbing up walls searching for a place to lay their eggs. After feeding, the tick drops off the host but does not travel far. Unlike tick species that require plants or soil for egg laying, female brown dog ticks are capable of laying thousands of eggs on any surface available to them. A brown dog tick can remain with one host throughout its life, if necessary. Brown dog ticks are three-host ticks, meaning that they drop off the host after the meal before each of their developmental stages. Beginning as eggs, they develop through larval and nymphal stages prior to maturing into adults. The life cycle of the brown dog tick is similar to that of other tick species in the family Ixodidae. They can be found in particularly high concentrations in Florida. However, they are more likely to inhabit warm environments and are prolific in the southern areas of the United States. Brown dog ticks live throughout the eastern U.S. As a result, brown dog tick populations can be found throughout the world, including areas with frigidly cold outdoor temperatures. Geographic Rangeīrown dog ticks are the species that is most often found in homes. In the southern United States, brown dog ticks may live in grass or bushes around homes, dog houses, or kennels. Animal kennels are another place where brown dog ticks can thrive, so kennel tick is another common name for the species. Their typical habitat is warm, protected indoor locations where dogs are found, and they may become established inside homes. The brown dog tick is unique in its ability to complete the entire life cycle indoors. They are also known to bite and feed upon humans and other animal hosts. Males are smaller than females, but are colored very similarly.Īs their name implies, brown dog ticks prefer to feed on the blood of canines. Blood-fed females are about a 1/2 inch long and have a blue-gray coloration. Size: Adults that have not taken a blood meal are about 1/8 inch long. Orkin can provide the right solution to keep brown dog ticks in their place…out of your home, or business.Ĭolor: Adult brown dog ticks are reddish-brown and lack any easily noticeable markings that are found on many other tick species. Welcome to Chapter Six notes!
As I mentioned on ao3, this is definitely more of a history-lite chapter but it definitely exists in the tapestry of some really defining historical context.
The chapter does make reference of the rather scattered influx of Easy Company members - while the names I picked are largely unsubstantiated (if anyone has a record of which Easy Co members rejoined the company on which date, you have gold at your hands and please do share). The best I can really get at triangulating who was present on D-Day (and then D-Day +1, +2, so on and so forth) are the casual references made about others in individual biographies. I definitely took a lot of liberties with who was present.
Due to the confusing nature of the D-Day drops (planes broke formation, against order, to try to evade “flak” - anti aircraft fire from the ground) the paratroopers were scattered throughout Normandy, some as many as 13 miles (or more) from their objectives. Oftentimes this worked out (as the original drop zones were actually well guarded by Germans). An added bonus is that due to the chaotic and spread out nature of the landings, Germans really had no clue as to the big picture - what was the objective? How many allied paratroopers had landed? What geographic region were they in?
However, due to the chaos (not landing where they were meant to) plus the difficult terrain (see: Hedgerows, not a walk in the park) it took some paratroopers days to get to their company. In some instances, they actually hooked up with other companies (such as someone from Able or Dog or Fox fighting alongside Easy). In others, they were actually fighting alongside other regiments (several Easy Co men were with the 82nd Airborne for several days after landing).
All of this is to say: taking into account the near immediate losses (when plane chalked #66, Lieutenant Meehan’s, went down virtually all of Easy HQ went down with it) plus the slow centralization of troops, Easy was never really up to full force at any point during the Normandy campaign.
This chapter also had some less than direct allusions to the consequences of living in an occupied country. As mentioned in previous references: the allotment of goods via ration tickets to the French, under German Occupation, basically indicated a 1200 cal/day maximum. In a time where people were (often forced to) do manual labor, walking or biking rather than using mechanized transport, while it wasn’t completely dire straits, the people of France (especially in the cities) were hungry.
Studies have actually shown that children who grew up during the Occupation were measurably shorter on average, than prior generations. Infections were more frequent (and more fatal) due to weakened immune systems among the people. By 1942, the mortality rate in Paris is reported as being a staggering 42% higher than in 1932-1938. This is incredibly lengthy, but also extremely insightful regarding the psychological state of the French during occupation (and how the physical realities of the occupation, such as shortages and malnutrition) contributed to it.
When a character from occupied France is written about in ways that suggest observers finding them looking “sharp” or with obvious bone structure in places it shouldn’t, they’re observing the consequences of yearslong sub-par nutrition and its physical cost.
Nazi Germany requisitioned food for its own people and let others pay the price: in some locations like the work camps and ghettos, it’s starvation diet allotments that led to very rapid decrease in conditions. In others, like France, people were getting fed, but their vitality was lost over months (and years). Of course, if someone were in the countryside with more availability to resources due to having land and working it or maintaining livestock, the situation was much less acute. Similarly, those with expendable wealth could use their resources to augment their ration tickets via black market purchases.
Canada is More Than Hockey and Maple Syrup
When you think about Canada, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you’re into sports, it’s probably ice hockey or the Stanley Cup. If food is more your thing, then perhaps you can picture mouth-watering poutine, or rich and sweet maple syrup instead. Are you a movie fan? We bet you’re thinking of Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, and Keanu Reeves (did you know they’re all Canadian-born and raised?). But, Canada has so much more to offer than talented people and amazing food.
One of the country’s biggest legacies is the often overlooked history of the Indigenous people who’ve been a part of the land for centuries. Art specifically is one of the greatest patrimonies they’ve gifted the world. It allowed them to tell stories spanning hundreds of years, and give modern people the chance to learn about them too. The artwork these communities created is a direct expression of their values, dreams, and collective experiences. Owning a piece gives us the chance to peek into the past through the eyes of the same people who experienced it firsthand, and their direct descendants.
One company that passionately aims to shed more light on this souvenir and gift wholesale brand - Oscardo.
About Oscardo
Named after the two men who founded the company, Oscar and Eduardo Lulka, Oscardo made its first steps into the world of wholesale goods in 1987. They purchased an already established Canadian neckwear company and set out to share what they’d found with the rest of the world. The success of that venture allowed them to acquire several smaller brands and ultimately grow into the success the company is today.
One notable merger happened in 1997 when the brothers jumped at the opportunity to take on a Canadian and Native gift and souvenir business named Skemo. Then, in 2003, Oscardo had the chance to partner with several renowned Canadian and First Nations Artists with the idea of creating authentic and distinctive products. It was such a successful venture that the relationships they created back then, continue to be alive and well today.
The brand strives to ensure each product represents the artwork the way the artist intended it to. They also ensure all pieces are approved by the artist or the estate before production. Showcasing the artist’s designs and making them available to everybody who’d be interested in them, is one of Oscardo’s main goals.
How to Best Support First Nations Art
One of the best ways to support Canadian First Nations Art is of course by purchasing each piece directly from the artist. If that option is not easily available, however, don’t let that discourage you! Choosing a reputable reseller is also an excellent option. Be sure to check if they pay their artists royalties for each product sold, or if they have bought the licenses in order to fairly reproduce each piece – like Oscardo does.
But, don’t stop at just owning a piece of their history for yourself. Share that rich past you’ve learned about with the people around you. Canadian First Nations Art is not something available everywhere, and that’s part of the beauty of what sets it apart. Teaching your children about it, for example, is a great way to keep those stories alive for the next generation. Read books illustrated by First Nations artists, watch movies written and directed by those communities, or try out a new recipe for a traditional dish during the family cooking night.
Not only will you be showing them the people who cared for the land before them, but you can also help them develop their sense of self as a side effect. The arts are incredibly important when it comes to general education. It helps them develop their creative side, think independently, and expand their worldview.
The beauty of First Nations Art, Canadian or other, is that each community and geographical location had its own special style. In the modern world, your chances of finding Native Art that speaks to you is even greater. Artists today have endless resources to develop their own design style, on top of working with more traditional techniques. Oscardo aims to make all these different options accessible to you, regardless of what your personal preference is.
You can choose from a variety of classic First Nations Art pieces such as porcelain mugs, earrings, and wallets with historical motifs like ravens, whales, and hummingbirds. If you’re looking for something a bit different, however, you can also find designs by Potawatomi Artist Daphne Odjig and Loyan Mani, Sioux Artist Maxine Noel. Featuring each artist’s personal style, you can be confident that you’re choosing a high-quality product as a souvenir or gift.
Oscardo products are available at our Gift Shop.
