you ever wanna listen to a compilation of an artist but like, not their greatest hits, just the specific songs your family had in a home burned CD that you used to listen to in long card rides

look all I’m saying about classic post-dictatorship Argentinian rock is that those guys gave us a gift that they could not enjoy themselves (except for Charlie Garcia, Spinetta, Calamaro and Fito Paez because they were built different).
so if I see a man go up on stage to sing Lamento Boliviano or Seminare or any similar rock song and he doesn’t sing it like a slut then what’s the fucking point. that’s what the whole genre is built for; you sing, you run a hand through your wet hair, you lean/sit/lay against every piece of music equipment or furniture available for you and you moan out the lyrics like you’re getting railed on-stage.
basically you have to bring this sort of energy into it:

i'm trying to listen to/watch more media in Spanish so i would love any Spanish music recs. especially if it's Voyager flavored.
Ahaha, you've come to the right a place!
Alright, they are only Voyager flavored in my mind, but I can explain all of them if need be. My music tastes also sometimes leans pretty Chilean, which is a notoriously difficult Spanish dialect to understand. Also, sometimes it's just a line or two that I'll end up thinking about or it only corresponds to a certain scene.
Believe it or not, a non-exhaustive list:
Aleks Syntek - Historias de danzón y de arrabal
Arquero - Star trek (lol)
Bersuit Vergarabat - Mi caramelo
Fito Paez - A rodar mi vida
Fonseca - Te mando flores, Simples corazones
Gepe - Buena memoria, Un amor violento, Alfabeto
Jorge Drexler - Pongamos que hablo de Martínez
Julieta Venegas - Me voy, El presente
María Isabel - Antes Muerta Que Sencilla (This is a meme song)
Mexican Institute of Sound ft.
Pillanes - Loro (This is where my "el cerro es tan alto y yo soy tan pequeño tag comes from)
Riccardo Cocciante - Cuerpo sin alma
Rosalía - Bagdad
Schuster - Me enamoré
Silvio Rodríguez - Ojalá
Villa Cariño - Serenata cruel
Violeta Parra - Que pena siente el alma, La Jardinera (though I prefer a cover version by Juanafé)
Ok this got outta hand even after I made some cuts, my bad. I can also explain/translate/transcribe any of them (since some don't have lyrics online) and my Trek connections though

BEAR WITH ME AND MY RANT ABT THE NEW FITO PAEZ BIOPIC TV SHOW ON NETFLIX
OK......
So, basically Netflix released a biopic tv show about the life of Argentinian rock star Fito Paez and I'm literally so excited to watch it for a number of reasons, but the second I found out that this was a thing I got the urge to go on tumblr and just explode so here goes.
The show is called "El Amor despues del Amor", named after Paez's sensational hit song linked below:
youtube
*please listen its actually so good
Anyways the gringos butchered it and dubbed the show in English to be called Love After Music which makes no fucking sense because the song literally translates to Love after Love not Love after Music and it is just sooo stupid, but anyway what can I do abt that.
This show excites me so much, first of all, because I think Fito Paez 10000000% deserves this kind of recognition, because he really is one of the most iconic latinamerican artists of his generation, and his music challenged the assumption that good pop and rock music could only be made and produced in English.
I guess mostly the reason this show excites me is because it is a show about a latinamerican rock artist, which you just don't get that often and I have been dying to see one. (Also, Argentinian alternative rock is definitely one of my hyper-specific fandoms and new content being produced for it is really exciting).
My mission in life, amongst other things, is to give the South and Central American rock scene the recognition it deserves, because often times people act like it doesn't exist, and new wave/ 80s pop/rock only came out of the US or England. Latinamerican rock serves an extremely important purpose in society, as it was quite literally revolutionary. (I'm bullshitting and tired, so ignore the uneccessary sentences, but my point is valid). Rock in Argentina was used to fight back against A LITERAL MILITARY DICTATORSHIP. And the fact that all the rock music biopics are still England and US centric is really annoying.
I'm not saying I don't enjoy shows or movies about music produced in the US or England, but there are so many amazing stories to tell from the perspective and about the lives of Hispanic musicians. Why are they constantly overlooked?
AND NOT JUST ABOUT MUSIC
Where are the movies about Argentinian Military Dictatorship? (IK they exist guys im just saying we should talk more about the fact that it happened). Actually for anyone interested pls watch the movie "Argentina, 1985", it is great!
Where are the movies about indigenous communities being wiped from existence in virtually every South American country?
Or, as a Colombian, can we get a show about terrorism or the drug trade in Colombia that isn't made from the bullshit NARCOS perspective of white guy policemen saviors, when we all know that all American cops did in Colombia was militarize our police forces and teach them how to abuse the public.
I'm getting off topic
THERE ARE AMAZING MUSIC STORIES COMING OUT OF LATIN AMERICA
Like the entire Mexican punk rock scene it is so cool
Cafe Tacvba, Maldita, Caifanes.
Where's the series abt Colombian metalheads. The metal scene was huge.
Or the goth scene. There was a time where you would walk on the street and you would see crowds of Morticias going to dance The Cure at a club.
Or the fact that Seru Giran recorded their first album in exile in Brazil bcs the government literally had them on a hitlist.
Which speaking of Seru Giran, how is there not a movie abt that yet. Seru Giran is such an iconic fucking band led by none other than Charly Garcia. They are a gift from God to humanity, they are pioneers of progressive rock, I don't know anyone like them. And I'm always saying this but if Seru Giran were British or American they would be just as highly regarded as the Beatles or the Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd because they are just too good.
Here are some Seru Giran songs everyone should listen to:
youtube
*this man is everything. synth on top of a keyboard on top of a piano.
youtube
youtube
youtube
Anyways, if you're still reading at this point you are very dedicated and i appreciate that.
And side note, please watch this performance of Charly Garcia, Fito Paez and the one and only Fabi Cantilo bcs it is too good:
youtube
*ojos de videotape is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and sometimes idk if its even real.
OKAY SO, TO CONCLUDE THIS EXTREMELY INCOHERENT RAMBLING,
I am extremely happy about the fact that latino stories are being told in media like this because its something that i feel as a fan of rock music and a latina i have been missing from my life. And you may think why do we need movies abt dictatorship or drug deals or terrorism. Doesn't that just perpetuate the stereotype that that's all your country has. NO ON THE CONTRARY. When it's told by big American corporations, it often loses meaning. Shows written by latinos about latinamerican experiences showcase the reason I am so proud to be latina. Because we are a resilient people. Our humanity shines through even in the darkest of times. In the midst of wars and dictatorship, we can come up with shit like this and it is so cool. And I wish there was more recognition for that.
So yeah maybe this isn't a rant abt Fito Paez, even though I love him so much. And I'm more than sure this show is about his life and not about Argentinian military dictatorship.
But I guess mostly I hope this will encourage more latino filmmakers to tell our stories. Tell our stories because they are so cool, and I love watching movies abt rockstars. But I would love it so much more to watch movies about rockstars who look like me.
So I'll get back to this after I watch the show. Chau :)

(this is just a silly excuse to recommend some very talented musicians from my country 😃👍)

Rodolfo: Vicentico [+ Los Fabulosos Cadillacs], Los Abuelos de la Nada

tagged!
just had a bit of free time for the first time during the whole week and saw that @joon-rkive just tagged me so why not seem completely desperate and do it right now? (i’m leaving the orange hearts bc they're cute and bc i copied the entire thing and i’m too lazy to delete them)
🧡 favorite time of the year: it's quite funny, i love the november-december time bc i’m usually during final exams and it's a moment that feels like the war has ended (y'know the titkok meme). so i love it because it's also when i start my summer vacations
🧡 comfort food: milanesas will always be a comfort food. especially from club de la milanesa
🧡 favorite dessert: lately i've been digging fruit a lot, especially like mix of fruits that restaurants give out (idk if this is a global thing)
🧡 things you collect: if you look at my room, it appears like i collect journals and notebooks. might be true
🧡 favorite drink(s): coffee has become addictive lately. i also love mate and carbonated/sparkling water? i never know the difference. i’m talking about water with gas
🧡 favorite musical artist: at the moment, bts, greta van fleet and fito paez
🧡 last song you listened to: cite tango by astor piazolla because i was rewatching los simuladores (i needed to see santos wearing a sweater again) and no kidding that song slaps, tango is just superior
🧡 last movie you watched: argentina 1985 and let me tell you, if we don’t win an oscar with that movie i’m burning down hollywood
🧡 last series you watched: technically los simuladores but only bc i rewatched one episode just five minutes ago
🧡 series you’re currently watching:  trying to finish house md but the cancer arc is taking me long to finish. i’m not emotionally ready
🧡 current obsession: i’m sure if you check out my blog you can tell right away
🧡 dream place to visit: i always say the same three countries but honestly i’m not even sure i have a dream place to visit. i always say japan, poland and south korea but i’m not sure anymore
🧡 a place you’ve been that you want to go back to: i miss going to mar del plata. it's quite expensive now if you don’t have an apartment at the shore, but i’m hoping to go back.
🧡 something you want: vacations. as simple as that
🧡 currently working on: finishing my major. i’m literally one step away and i can’t wait to be free.

i would like to hear about this animatronic fan band if you're comfortable sharing 👀👀
I haven't shared abt my ocs in so long, i'll be honored!!
(Even tho i don't really have any art on these guys and i haven't given them much thought in a long ass time... meh)
So!! My idea for these guys came by thinking "man... it'd be really cool to have an animatronic band in my country (Argentina)" bc we don't have any of that here. So all these guys are pretty much argentine, and would sing mostly songs for here (and generally songs from latinamerican artists), with most being animal species commonly found here too!! (Most, not all)
There were 5 of them:
First off, Silvia, the pianist!! She would be a dog (poodle, to be specific) in her 40s. She'll be a complete old diva, dressing with very expensive and elegant ballroom-like clothing, which was meant to fit with her playing a grand piano. The idea for how she'll look like on-stage would be her being in a bit of a 3/4ths angle to the audience, so the piano was more visible. I was kind of inspired by actual argentine actress Mirta Legrand and Susana Gimenez while thinking of her!!
Then there was Tamara, the lead guitarrist!! She was a black cat and more of a rebel type, fitting her instrument, and in her mid 30s. She would dress in a bit of grunge fashion, with an old flannel over an old band shirt, ripped jeans, boots etc. She was meant to be a foil to Silvia, with her being very proper and elegant while Tamara was messy and casual about everything. On stage, she would even be sitting on Sil's piano, facing the audience more directly. Her guitar would be all black and red with a few stickers on it even.
Then there was the Actual Old Guy of the team, Don Sergio (Note: Don as in, 'Mister' but more casual) he's a Tatú Carreta (AKA a Big armadillo) in like, his 70s or so. I even envisioned him with a grey beard and the whole thing. He would be dressed like a gaucho, with a big ol hat and pancho, boots, etc. He would play an acoustic guitar, meant to sound more 'melancholic' and stuff. He was very much a grandfather type, more focused on playing tango and charreras. On stage, i saw him sitting on like, a log with a whole mate set up by his side
Then, there was the youngest guy, Ciro!! He was a carpincho (capybara) on his teens, 15/16 yrs old!! He'll be the baterist, and be sarcastic and bit of a joker, but still a very sweet kid underneath it all. He would wear very typical, but still modern-ish clothes, a coya hat and a sweater of llama wool, both green like his drum set. He'll have his whole little space on stage, with some fairy lights behind him and the band's name spray painted on the bass drum (i did never give the whole group a name tho).
Then, there was Iliana, the bassist!! She was a Aguará Guazú (Maned Wolf) on her 20s. She was pretty high-energy and easily excited, very friendly and outgoing generally. She would dress very colorfully, i hadn't really thought about it as much but she would def wear bali pants. Her bass would also be brightly painted. On stage, she would be standing, one of her feet resting on the amplifier.
That's everything i had for them, basically!! It's been years since i thought of them, but it was nice to revisit these ideas!!
To end things off, some songs they would definetly cover
Mariposa Tecknicolor - Fito Paez
Y Dale Alegria A Mi Corazón - Fito Paez
Carnavalito (El Humahuaqueño)
De Esas Que Te Hacen Llorar - Jorge Rojas
Ojos De Videotape - Charly Garcia
Canción Para Mi Muerte - Sui Generis
Don - Miranda
Alfonsina Y El Mar - Mercedes Sosa
Luz Delito - Wos
Arrancarmelo - Wos
Ojos Color Sol - Calle 13
Latinoamerica - Calle 13
3 Estrellas En El Conjunto - BZRP feat. Duki / La T y la M
¡Corre! - Jesse & Joy
Te Aviso, Te Anuncio - Shakira

Los nominados de los Premios Grammy 2023
Tumblr media
