Zoë Zohar

Raised in Israel by a South African mother and Israeli father, Zoë Zohar shares her story and take on life through upbeat melancholic ambience. By incorporating live with electronic instruments, Zohar constantly shifts between raw nostalgic tones and futuristic elements, searching for a new authentic sound. After moving to London at the age of 19, Zohar and her team began working together on her much-anticipated EP of four songs, one of which features her recent release ‘Paper Airplanes’. Through her EP, Zohar tells a story of feeling overwhelmed in a trapped environment. In this song, she portrays a sense of loneliness and feeling on the edge of defeat, only to realise that one may find comfort in this state of mind. After completing an extensive education in music, she is currently based in LA and is focused on writing new music and playing virtual shows. Her latest single ‘Lonely With Someone’ is a story of the consequence of addiction and the unsaid hidden scars that it leaves. The song is a segway from her previous release ‘Someone Else’s Arms’, Rivita states “With this piece of work, I wanted to express the strength an individual really holds. There have been many moments in my life, I have surprised myself with my own strength and while facing some of my biggest fears in tough situations. While growing up I watched someone get lost in the sea of addiction. As I got older, I realized just how common addiction is across the globe and how well it is masked sometimes. It has caused me pain and it felt like I had no right to feel this way because I was not the one with the disease. I wanted to find a way to release my feelings without the consequence of being told to get over it or to stop thinking about it. Dance is a big part of her inspiration and will continue to be a prime part of her career. Her latest single 'Magnetic' delivers a smooth romantic R&B feeling that makes you want to get cuddled up with that special someone. She explains further, "'Magnetic,' has romantic R&B vibes that were inspired by love between the sheets. Smiling and tracing each other with your fingertips. Love can sometimes just be free and chaotic. Head in the clouds, floating in another dimension." Listen below.

Lyla DiPaul

Lyla DiPaul is an American recording artist based out of New Orleans. DiPaul grew up in Takoma Park, MD where she fell in love with playing guitar and writing songs at the age of 10. She draws musical inspiration from a variety of songwriters including Taylor Swift, Joni Mitchell, and Phoebe Bridgers. DiPaul eloquently relays the feeling of love and heartbreak through her music, and hopes to connect to people through her work. Her latest single is ‘Still Unwell’ and here is what Lyla had to say about the release: ”I wrote ‘Still Unwell’ with my friend MC in the fall of 2019. Simply put, it is a breakup song. We always describe it as being about nostalgia for a relationship. When you miss all the good things and bad things about a person, and just cannot move on. We recorded the bulk of the song in the studio at Loyola University, New Orleans and then ended up finishing up the guitar work and the vocals in my bedroom after things became unsafe due to the pandemic.” Listen below.

Mango In Euphoria

Starting her project in London after being employed in Florida and travelling through the United States, French-born alternative artist and songwriter Mango In Euphoria quickly found her audience when she dropped her first experimental work at the end of 2020. The singer is an emerging talent noticeable by her quirky style and her mysterious signature voice, matching her very own unique musical tracks mixing Electronic Rock, Dream Pop and Dark-wave genres. Creating melodies coming from her mind with virtual instruments and recording with a very basic microphone during the global Coronavirus pandemic, Mango In Euphoria also began to work remotely with Belgian producer Philippe Francq who helped her in developing a lot of demos with physical instruments inspired from vintage influences such as the Twin Peaks series soundtracks, The Cure, and Garbage. As Mango was mainly musically influenced by Grimes and Lana Del Rey, there's no doubt that the result would be quiet outstanding. Her new song ‘Golden Shrine’ is about celebrating who you are as a unique person, embracing this uniqueness “and also about someone who started to copy everything I was doing when everything was coming from my creativity so instead of getting more pissed off I created a song about it!” she laughs. East London singer-songwriter, Shannon is an indie-pop artist that brings soulful tones through her vocals. Her music shares stories and experiences through heartfelt lyrics and production driven by acoustic guitar. Her latest single ‘But He's There’ is an upbeat track about the complications of falling for a close friend. The lyrics reveal inner thoughts of uncertainty about stepping out of one's comfort zone to fulfil an exciting idea of love. As the song builds, the story unfolds and reflects the fantasy for a closer relationship. Shannon's high notes introduce an unexpected direction to the vocal line that mirrors the feeling of being caught unaware by your thoughts and feelings. Whilst picturing the production for this song, some influential tracks from the 90's came to mind from artists such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Lauryn Hill and Natasha Bedingfield. It's a personal song about romantic escapism between lovers. Lush synthesizer melodies, emotional vocals, and dynamic, but the chill drums make this track a perfect fit for study, Lo-fi, chill, and dreamy playlists. This is a song that Natasha wrote with her girlfriend in mind. "I believe that it's important to show the people you love what they're worth to you. Led by the Berlin singer‘s characteristic voice and electric guitar play, we get carried away high and low until we want to join in the glory. Talking about the powers of the self-reigned body, the song‘s unique structure creates a whirl that drags you in. @tolarian-academic for the track-by-track review of “Mouth Moods” by Neil Cicierega.

First off, I had never listened to this album or Neil Cicierega before, so this is an entirely novel experience for me.

For the general review: Neil is not a DJ; he’s a meme. This is not an album to be listened to as anything other than an hour-long joke. And for that reason I wouldn’t really recommend it. Go through the songs Cicierega used and find ones that you love or love to hate and watch Cicierega throw tomatoes at them, but an hour is too long for what’s a pretty unstructured joke. There’s a reason that most feature-length comedies tend to have a conventional plot they attach themselves to (see: the good Monty Python films); it gives the audience room to breathe which “Mouth Moods” emphatically does not. Still, the eldritch familiar attaching itself to my shoulder advises that I at least pretend to have a sense of humor, so my wholly arbitrary ranking was based on how much each track made me laugh. And tbh, I was actually really getting into the groove of the album by the latter third. So take from that what you will.

1. “Wallspin”: This was the goddamn funniest song I’ve heard in years; “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” and by extension Dead Or Alive’s first three albums are under-appreciated gems of eighties quasi-ironically good dance-pop. Seriously, go listen to “Youthquake”. It’s actually unironically good in parts.

2. “AC/VC”: I ranked this highly in no small part because I harbor secret guilty pleasure at “A Thousand Miles”, and the utter dissonance with ACDC was *Italian finger-kiss* perfecto.

3. “The End”: The most scathing thing anyone can say of New Metal is that by simply shuffling out the edginess of the sound, you’ve basically got a particularly polished and dull brand of Top 40 bait. This songs kicks ass. Tat said, it takes a bit too much buildup and is less punchy than “AC/VC”, hence the third-place.

4. “Mouth Pressure”: Much like the place directly below it (I’m writing this out of order if you can’t tell), this is a mix of two things that only go together ironically. But where “Stand By Me” and “One Week” are both actually good, “All-Star” is perfect, meme-y garbage.

5. “Stand By Meme”: (1) Perfect title; and (2) “Stand By Me” is one of my brother’s favorite songs of all time, so that helped this more than it probably ought to have. But hey, “Stand By Me” has some great orchestrals. And by “great” here, I of course mean “utterly dissonant with ‘One Week’.”

6. “Wow Wow”: “All-Star” is a recurring theme of this album, much like it is in life. The “Wild Wild West” is certainly among Will Smith’s worse career choices, and it’s pretty good ironic enjoyment fodder. And as a rap song, it has one hell of a beat. Unfortunately, if this were a ranking based on anything other than ,,””ironic””,, enjoyability, then “Wallspin” wouldn’t be at the top.

7. “Shit”: Speaking of things taht only got their place because of ironic memeingful enjoyment...

8. “Annoyed Grunt”: I like the use of overlapping layers here. It’s easily the best song-as-a-song on the album. The use of the audio clips isn’t too distracting (or perhaps it’s just distracting enough), and they’re properly structured into the song structure. The reason it’s below “AC/VC” is that it didn’t make me laugh out loud.

9. “Dear Dinosaur”: This song actually kind of works as an experimental rock song. The janky planking and slight dissonance is like if Xiu Xiu had a sense of humor and desire for radio play.

10. “T.I.M.E.”: You’ll notice that all the funny songs get high billing bc fuck listening to this memebait as actual music (speaking of membait, I’m glad “All-Star” is a running theme in this album). But dear GOD do the Village People not acquiesce to a full-bodied orchestra.

11. “300MB”: I feel like the “song” of this track is better than that of “AC/VC”, but the joke is less punchy and immediate. As a song, though, it’s a touch too generic edm, but hey, the “song” isn’t really the core engagement here.

12. “Smooth”: Given that this one has actual, y’know, layers and shit that I love so much, I feel bad for the low placement here. And as a song, it pretty much works. But the retooling of the “One Week” vocals to fit “Smooth Criminal”’s melody was just imprecise enough that it was all I could focus on. I’m a nitpick. Still, it improves quite a bit as it progresses, and it’s a great buildup to “Stand By Meme”.

13. “The Starting Line”: This was ambitious, but I was ultimately a bit disappointed by the actual music. I prefer my music layered with lots of little sounds overlapping to immerse myself in. “The Starting Line” takes moments and hooks out of which to build a pretty conventional pop song, but I would like to see this level of ear for hooks and talent for careful selection applied to something actually intrinsically good. Still, points for ambition.

14. “Busta”: Meh. A pretty decent ensemble of its component parts, but not engaging enough on its own merits, and not outright hilarious enough to justify it the way “AC/VC” was.

15. “Tiger”: See above, but loses points for the joke being unfunny.

16. “Blockbuster”: This made me feel the ages wearing into my bones, how dare

17. “Revolution #5″: I’ve got nothing against album transitional songs, but they rarely rank high as track in their own right. Also, the ear-to-ear got more than a little grating by the end.

18. “Floor Corn”: Copy-paste all my criticisms of “The Starting Line”, but remove the part where I gave points for ambition.

19. “Bustin”: Two great tastes that... added nothing together. The use of one of the Gorillaz’s best songs contributed nothing. I’d say this is by far the laziest track on the album. Every other track at least had an idea. This just kind of sounds like a bored rapper releasing a bleh mixtape because he’s aware that he’s at the point of his career where no matter what he makes, he’ll get the same result, so why bother?

20. “Shady Interlude”: Have I publicly mentioned that I hate Eminem? Worst white rapper in history. Yes, worse than Vanilla Ice. Because people actually like Eminem. He is exactly the kind of witless edgelord from high school that you were promised you would get petty comeuppance against by outperforming them in the job market, except he’s a millionaire. Fuck Eminem, and fuck this song for reminding me of his existence.

Being the first born to Keaton and Sarah, and a boy no less, there were instant expectations for him Jaxon Smythe. They were strict, from the moment he began to walk, they were drilling rules into his head, trying to mould their perfect son early on. He was to be shown off, the golden boy, who would have a successful career, like his Father, and marry a beautiful girl, like his Father, and have a family, like his Father.

But Jaxon was a strange child. He mumbled a lot, was edgy, and when his siblings came along, rather than trying to get all of his Mother’s attention as a jealous child would, be enjoyed being left to his own devices. He liked to get into trouble, and he liked privacy, and nothing could seem to get him to conform to his Father’s rules as he grew. It seemed as though he loved getting under his Father’s skin and making life harder for him.

The older he got, the worse he got, acting out all of the time and constantly causing problems for everyone. Even at school, he was a difficult child, always being sent out, or to the principal’s office, or even home if his behaviour and attitude was bad enough. He was uncontrollable. Even when being punished for whatever he’d done, he’d find ways to piss you off more and satisfy himself in the process. Between him and his parents it was a constant cycle of arguments, getting into trouble, dealing with the consequences and doing it over again.

By the time he was 15, he was regularly getting into fist fights at school, and had gotten into a number with his Father too. But the bigger worry was his lack of emotional stability. There were weeks of locking himself away, experimenting with narcotics to drown out this issue that was getting to him, getting hooked on things that no 15 year old should be taking. There were weeks of him shutting off, letting the characters and the voices that kept whispering in his mind take over while he checked out mentally.

As he got older, he found himself in more cycles; arguing with his parents; drug fuelled cycles; sleep cycles that didn’t consist of any sleep. He thought that escaping everything at home and getting away from Los Angeles would solve his problems, would make the niggling thoughts go away, the ones that were becoming harder to block out no matter what he used to try and stop it. But he knew he’d never get away if he didn’t make it through school and graduate, which was the only thing that made him actually focus on school word. Despite his terrible appearance, dark circles under his eyes, slightly hollow cheeks, jeans that had grown baggier than they should have been, and his mind deteriorating, he was maintaining grades to pass his classes, and because of that, no one questions why he had grown to become in the state he was.

Someone, he did it, but boy was he a bad state by the time he graduated. Along with a handful of friends that were just as hooked on amphetamines and hallucinogenics as he was, they set off in the direction of New York City. They didn’t have jobs or anywhere to live, but they didn’t care. The trip took three months, with multiple week-long stop offs in random cities, and lots of nights locked up in motel room, trying to ignore the commands of the voices in his head, and rushed get-a-ways in the morning before anyone could charge him for whatever destruction he’d done to the room in a night of pacing, chatting to himself about his plan to make it in the city.

Days went by, Jaxon did a good job of keeping it together, even when he wanted to check out, and let whatever chaos would occur, ensued. But instead, he focused on his climb to the top, which began with sending in demos to various record labels based in the city— which, frankly, was many.

Growing up, there were two things, only two things, that Jaxon loved more than anything else. Skateboarding, for one. He’d first sparked an interest in skateboarding following the release of the first Tony Hawks’ Pro Skater game, getting his own skateboard 6 months later with his allowance, something his Father wasn’t pleased about, but when Jaxon started practising and learning to skate, it became clear he was a natural. The second thing he loved, was performing. He would always cite that performing was one of the best ways to block everything in his mind. He sang to himself a lot, cute in his child days, but growing slightly concerning when he got into skate punk music and the lyrics lacked innocence like his used to.

After a month of trying to do videos on YouTube (and rarely succeeding), and spamming labels with demos, he got an interview at Fueled by Ramen and was soon signed as a promising artist, which he was. His first album, released in 2011, was a huge hit on the rock charts and boosted him to instant stardom. Most already knew him as the rebellious, oldest Smythe, but now he had a new reputation, meaning he could to mould himself.

And he was wild. A national tour followed his debut album, and his second album, released in 2013, was followed by an international tour. Some problems went away, to some extent, others didn’t. With so much time rehearsing and performing and focusing on music, he felt more in charge of his old mind, like he was in control. But the attention, the money, and the popularity meant that drugs were easy to get his hands on, and now he was spending far more money on getting high than he ever had.

He didn’t work on much new music for a while, instead, he had fun, getting his face plastered over magazines and newspapers, renowned for his antics, his almost constant state of intoxication, his tendency to get around after he publicly came out as homosexual. Then, slowly, he stopped appearing on the news so much. Everyone lost interest as he stayed off the radar, to the point that he was phased out. Now he didn’t have someone watching his every move. When his contract at FBR was up for renewal, his declined and left, leaving with the same friends he showed up with in New York, to go on a new adventure. They didn’t bother keeping contact with many people after they left, making new friends every time they went somewhere new.

They floated around for a couple years, taking quite a few vacations out of the country, staying in hotels and motels and hostels, partying all of the time, causing trouble without consequence. But there was no music anymore, like before. Now he heard was party remix songs, the kinds that just sound like noise over anything else. It didn’t help with anything, didn’t stop anything, didn’t stop the episodes or hallucinations, especially not when he was always pumping his system full of drugs.

But in 2016, the boys decided it had been long enough, and they ought to go home, see their families and their old friends, start back in Los Angeles at the very beginning of 2017. Not that Jaxon was in a great state to be around family. Now he could at least make himself look better by slathering on some pale make up, but make up did nothing for when he was shaking and aggressive from withdrawls, or for the flinches and reactions when the voices are loud, for the panic in his eyes and his edgy disposition.

Though it’s halfway through the year, he’s sure he can manage to catch up on the work so far and be able to complete his tests. He’s got plenty to keep him going, but his mind is still slowly falling apart from and more and with no help, until he lets someone in to see the mess that is his mind, nothing is going to get better.

Jaxon looks a lot like Brendon does more recently. Slicked black hair, lots of black dress pants and metallic blazers or dark coloured shirts. He quite often wears glasses, but not always.

Quite a lot of sex with Sherlock instead of Tom. Molly the best man’s date. A (sophisticated. Or not) Molly/Janine cat fight for Janine hitting on SH moments. Dancing, so much Sherlolly dancing (and no leaving early). Probably no Shezza (Shezzer?)—which, hmm, is a shame (But maybe they’ve their own not-being-on-a-sex-holiday-but-sexing-a-lot time). A real proposal to Molly. Molly at family Christmas, maybe even a Christmas wedding. Solving CAM without the threat of exile sharpens Sherlock’s deductive abilities. No Norbury as Molly’s already expecting their first offspring, so Sherlock doesn’t taunt needlessly. Mary as the Sherlolly baby godmother as she’s alive! Culverton Smith is taken down by the duo of Mary and Molly while the latter gives birth there (because the ladies are awesome, plus Mrs H tackles him down). John is so impressed he doesn’t look at any other women. Molly’s big heart brings Eurus from her metaphoric plane the moment she steps into 221B, plus baby Holmes wins her heart too. The Holmes family reconciliation and Eurus is in therapy instead of being a multi-killer. Baker Street Boys Team continues while Baker Street Girls Team gives them a run for their money. Mycroft asks Lady Smallwood out himself to her astonishment and internal squealing. Mummy Holmes gets more grandkids than she could’ve imagined. And basically, everyone walks happily into the sunset.
