Just came from looking at screenshots I'd saved of Dev, like these ones from "A New Dev-elopment":

I don't think I've said this yet, but the funny thing about Dev is that his hair reminds me of how I draw Happy Peppy Gary, who's been one of my main doodle muses since 2016. They both have ginger spikes:

This week I actually redesigned Gary's hair by letting it grow longer and more curly in the back, so I'll keep Dev's short in the back and only spiky in the front.

They have different skin and eye colors, etc., but it is funny that like, 6(?) years ago, I put Gary in a zipper hoodie.

I do a lot of traditional art, and I'm really gonna have to do a sketchpage nailing their designs down so they look different in pencil.

My current Gary design does have a spiral in his hair since I do that for all my witches, and I don't think that'll ever come up for Dev, especially if Dale Dimm really is Dev's ancestor - the one person who's extremely UNlikely to be a witch - so... there's that.

I like how Marcus keeps calling his daughter Hazelnut. It's cute. I'm glad to see him ready to hunt the "apartment ghost" he's been after since Episode 1.

I feel like they shouldn't be giving a horror movie to a child if they haven't seen it themselves and then walk back to their room, especially since their line of work is about trauma recovery (or at least... helping kids avoid hurt). They should know better than that.

So far, our only canon fairy death fits the OG series' implied canon that only non-magical items can kill Fairies [i.e. "magic doesn't affect magic" from "Abra-catastrophe"], so I like that.

I don't have much to say. Pepper seems interesting I suppose, and I can probably have her be a friend of Blonda's in 'fic.

I enjoy Jorgen grumpily cleaning up magic messes. That feels right.

... Unclear if Jorgen is keeping a bunch of fairies locked in the basement or if he just has a shelf full of similar-looking items.

day 28 of martch - redraw old art

had this idea 4 years ago and now i have realized it lol. i put way too much thought into this so notes below

notes for designs i did while making this:

i wanted them all to have unique eye shapes instead of defaulting to how i draw eyes normally because animal crossing characters dont have uniform eyes lol

also i worried wayy too much about some of the species choices lol. like. do i make junko a bear because monokuma, or does that give the twist away? do i make everybody a different species, or do i double dip in a few places to make the twin twist less predictable? ultimately decided fuck it im not writing the game im drawing fanart i can do what i want

when i first came up with this idea i'd only fully decided on the species of 7 of the cast so here's my train of thought for why they are what they are:

yasuhiro- easiest out of the way first. there's nothing else he could be but a frog. decided to give him the weird facial hair animal crossing sometimes gives their characters because its not animal crossing without a couple ugly guys (affectionate)

hifumi- big guy. elephant. made sense. gave him some pink accents despite not thinking it worked all that well to get that animal crossing authenticity yknow lol. plus he likes some cutesy things so he can have some pink as a treat

sakura- felt bad about making her a gorilla ngl- especially since she is. one of the three characters in this game with a darker skin tone. but literally no other species made sense for her. and ngl there are like. no gorilla villagers i like. so i tried my best to make her look cool as hell

sayaka- cat villagers are super popular, so might as well make the ultimate pop idol one, right?

asahina- okay this comes from bias on my part but in my new horizons my default uchi villager was a rabbit and asahina would 100% be an uchi villager so bada bing bada boom. ended up making her coat more orange than it actually is cause i wanted her to be red and didnt want it to clash.

mondo- im going to be completely honest. when i thought of this i was just like "oh that makes sense i always associated mondo with tigers i dont remember why tho." and i just double checked and not only are they in his execution but he also has tiger underwear. so. this ones canon imo

ishimaru- once again, wolf villagers are popular, and just made sense for him. hes a loyal rules guy, and more edgy than a dog- plus, it gives him a cat and dog dynamic with mondo! this concludes everyone that i came up with their species 4 years ago, below is the ones i decided now

kyoko: i was between anteater and wolf for her, and since i decided not to double dip on species, i went with anteater. idk, anteater villagers always seem so aloof and strange to me, it's just her vibe.

junko & mukuro: i was between bear, cat, and rabbit for them, and once again, avoided double dipping. bear is pretty obvious, but cat was because once again, cat villagers are so popular, and rabbit was because of the irony. junko's ears are also supposed to mimic the little monokuma hair ties she has lol

celestia: i was between anteater and ostrich, and i'd already chosen kyoko as the anteater. i didn't even remember that the ostrich villager was called ostrich for a bit, i kept thinking of her as a peacock, but then realized that was perfect for her whole european thing lol.

toko: i was between cat and squirrel, and sayaka was cat. her just being such a small bitter little guy is fitting for her i think.

chihiro: i was between hamster, rabbit, and mouse, and rabbit was taken. i think i only went with mouse because i wanted to draw that head shape, but i did realize after that that means they and mondo are a cat and mouse lol

makoto: i was between deer and dog, and honestly it all came down to his ahoge. if there was a way to have antlers and an ahoge, i would have done so, but honestly it worked out for the best i think. having a dog and cat relationship with sayaka + komaru and toko being dog and squirrel just worked too well.

togami: i was between horse and eagle and this was one of the hardest decisions. ultimately went with eagle simply because i didnt want to draw an animal crossing horse. this did end up making the squirrel be obsessed with the eagle which i do love. i kept trying to work blue into his design but it just did not work at all.

leon: oh leon. the hardest one to choose. i had to save him for until id decided everyone else lol. i was between bull, eagle, and tiger, and went with bull bc of double dipping. all three suited him equally i think it was hard to choose. also coloring him was hard too lol

What book are you currently reading? Brisingr (for those who’ve never heard of it, the third book in the series Eragon starts). I’ve read it few times before, but it’s been a while since I last did it. Still love the series. Also there’s Mariel of Redwall, with which I’ve been stuck for more than six months now. It is dangerous to re-read a book for a millionth of time when you remember that oh no, next is the part you don’t care about.

What’s your favorite movie you saw in theaters this year? I only went to see one movie in theaters in 2022 (yeah it’s already 2023, shut up), and it was Sonic 2. I did go see it 3 whopping times, so it’s pretty safe to say it’d be my favourite even if there were any others.

What do you usually wear? Uhhhh hoodies, fitting tank tops or t-shirts, loose pants. Colors vary, mostly black but there can be others.

How tall are you? 169cm.

What’s your Star Sign? Do you share a birthday with a celebrity or a historical event? Libra. I do not know, Trafalgar Law from One Piece is close enough to a celebrity for me.

What’s something you’re good at vs something you’re bad at? Uhhh I guess I’m kinda good at drawing and writing? Maybe? Good is such a vague term. I do enjoy those, and I think that’s more important than being ‘’’good’‘‘ at things. I am bad at playing any instruments. Too many things you’re supposed to do simultaneously with your body.

Dogs or cats? Cats!!!! Dogs are also good, but cats make me more stupidly happy than any other creatures I’ve met.

If you draw/write, or create in any way, what’s your favorite picture/favorite line/favorite etc. from something you created this year? I have drawn some pretty good pictures this year, but I haven’t posted them online and I don’t feel like doing that now either. I do enjoy one undead wolf knight thingy I drew. I also like (still partly wip) doll’s bed I made a lot. I have written a lot, but isolating a single line is impossible.

What’s something you would like to create content for? Currently I’d like to doodle all of my favourite One Piece characters, but we’ll see when I’ll get to that. I have also been redrawing my oldest ocs with the same kids’ color pencils and other stuff as 20 years ago, and it’s been lots of fun. Overall I wanna work on my original projects more.

What’s something you’re currently obsessed with? Stardew Valley and Sonic Frontiers. Too bad I already completed the latter, I am waiting for the dlc’s to come. Also obsessed about my original projects.

What’s something you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year? Dissapointment is for those who do not know how to keep their expectations and excitement realistic. Jokes aside, I am honestly fairly good at being realistic about things I’m interested in, and it is a very rare occasion I am actually dissapointed about something I was excited for first, and it didn’t happen in 2022.

What’s a hidden talent of yours? It wouldn’t be hidden if I told you, would it. Tbh, I have no idea. Organizing material things maybe? Keep your timetables and whatnot away from me, but let me rearrange those messy drawers and closets of yours.

Are you religious? Nah. I am slightly spiritual pagan of my own brand though.

Whats something you wish to have at this moment? Does not-ill body and mind free of constant anxiety count? If not, then Freedom Planet 2 Switch port would be nice, but that won’t be out before next summer.

10 Anti LO Asks

1. you know whats also bad about the red eyes? not only do they look awful on persephone's pink color, they're not even a unique feature? like we've seen hades' eyes go red, we've seen eros' eyes go red, and ares' eyes are ALWAYS red, so even this idea its her "unique queenly trait" doesnt even hold up?? because we've seen it on other characters before?like at least the blue glowing eyes looked unique and even gave her a possessed, otherworldly look, something with the red eyes just dont have.

2. The faces in the latest ep (not fastpass).... Ew

3. I saw someone praise lore olympus art, specifically the ones where Apollo is playing his lyre and Daphne is covering her ears while her hair is split in two (yuck! Bad decision looks awful) so we can see Apollo, the one where she transforms into her hibernation state (weird perspective, chin and neck, I think, also what the hell was that supposed to be?) and the last one before cutting to Thanatos (which, I admit looks a little better that the other but I still got distracted Apollo's arm among other things).

Now, Rachel is a professional artist like 15-25 years older than me (I dunno her age) drawing one of the most liked webtoons.

I feel like I'm nitpicking or being too harsh or crazy because I think it is a little terrible and this person thinks it's amazing and I know art is subjective and all but like the difference of opinion is jarring. I am by no means a professional and my art leaves a lot to be desired and I guess I don't have incredibly high standards (or do I? I'm second guessing). Is it really that good?

Because I know that Smythe commits more than a few anatomy atrocities. I wanted to redraw a few panels two years ago and I noticed a few things that Don't Work Like That.

4. ok but that other anon is right. we shouldnt have to go off old tumblr asks or random tweets to understand what's going on and who the characters are. rachel doesnt realize you have to actually write whats going on, not putting the readers on a scavenger hunt trying to figure out what they're even reading.

5. im honestly surprised LO hasnt ruined more mother figures at this point. maybe maia will be next and depicted as neglectful and hermes is only the way he is because hes acting out to be noticed by her, maybe dione will slut shame aphrodite, who knows, the possibilities are endless when its about ruining every mother figure to prop persephone and hera up and to avoid giving the characters actual personalities that isnt dependent on mommy/daddy issues.

6. I hate the clothing choice for Daphne in run for your life. It felt like she was drawn in a sexualized manner when she shouldn’t have been because she was running away from a r*pist. Like she almost had a nip slip, we almost got her ass, it was like Rachel was trying to fit her butt and chest in a lot of the frames like some video game with the token woman character. Like if a different dress was choosen or how she made Daphne tie the dress, I just feel like Rachel can’t draw outside of pinup sexy that well. Like sexy is fine for sexy scenes but running away from a r*pist is not sexy. (I probably sounded really lame, but the way Rachel presents the story in a feminist way but can only draw one way in not even the same style is annoying)

7. Things I think would have been better for the story instead of focusing so much on HXP

-Expanding on Minthe’s and Hades beginning of their relationship (he couldn’t of fallen for her since she didn’t laugh at him and when she yelled at him said it’s not your fault but you have the hat I think that would have added to his character more to see him more than a 40 year old who hits on barely legal)

-Leto’s kidnapping of Demeter. Both we/are close with Hera, and probably know or each other or may have been friends. Like I wanna know how Leto kidnapped her but also how are they interacting since they probably know each other and Demeter probably had Hera’s back when Hera ended their friendship.

-Ares return to Aphrodite. We don’t get to see much of her character but we know this is something she’s wanted, but they way it was handled was so flat, We assume Aphrodite told Ares that his gf slept with his father to save their son but we don’t actual read any words between the couple. And then they’re living together. I wanna see how they actually interact and stay together like their better moments. Like how well did he settle in, did they talk about how long he left for or is he mad like come on that’s something interesting but I feel like RS can’t write outside of HXP

-the deal with Echo. Why do people think Echo could possibly be Hera’s gf if she’s her assistant. Yeah they do dirty work together BUT I didn’t get a wiff or sexual tension or anything. Was it that she was there with the doctor? It just seems like Hera is that CEO trope who has the assistant always by her now.

-a little more of Pysche and Aphrodite friendship. Like Pysche says Aphrodite is lonely (and we can assume a part of that is Ares) but also because she “doesn’t have many friends” so why not a solo scene of just the two of them being actual friends. Like what did Aphrodite say when she brought back a purple nymph that was gonna help them with their work.

-Hermes not talking about Persephone. I feel like that 99% of what his character is and then just a little bit of himbo. 

-Maybe Thantos and Minthe started flirting/hooking up. We’re they friends first or flirts first? Was it after Hades and Minthe got into a fight or something else? What did Thantos like about Minthe and what does she like about him? Why did she stay with Hades with Thantos was there (it’s not like she wanted to be queen of the underworld) How did Thantoas and Thetis meet and become friends? Idk if I was seeing two guys and one of them actually liked my friend I might consider leaving Hades for him. But again hades did have the power to control everything in Minthe’s life (job, home, everything) I do like Daphne and Thantos But I feel like the transition could have been better if we knew more, but again RS can only focus on one thing and that’s HXP.

8. FP SPOILERS— I’m done. I’m really done. We called it. We FKN called it. They got married behind the readers back, Demeter didn’t respond to the question as she actively avoided it and time was up, Apollo is somehow involved in the trial- THIS WHOLE THING IS A MESS AND IM TIRED OF HOPING THAT IT GETS BETTER. Four FKN years of this??? I’m done with this Webtoon even though I’m FKN stuck in it. I’m so FKN done.

Fast Pass spoiler (kinda) OH MY GOD, I JUST REALIZED THE POMEGRANATE PIN IS JUST PASTED ON EVERY FRAME, NOT EVEN RE DRAWN FOR PERSPECTIVE, NO, JUST COPIED AND PASTED, REGARDLESS THE OUTFIT ANGLE AND LIGHTING, IT'S HILARIOUS!!!I mean, I knew the art was decaying, but this just made me laugh out loud of how bad it looked.

Random WIP from 2020

just found a bunch of drawing/WIP I have in my “en cours” folder, mostly doodles I started but never actually finished. Cannot tell if I’ll ever finish the one that demand more work, so here are the unfinish result of those.

I’ll try to see if my laptop also has WIP too (of course it does), might post them later.

1) A drawing Idea I had after discovering the song Good Thing, which I kinda found relatable (at least on the none romantic part). simply wanted to make a portrait with the lyric in it, never finished it tho.

2) From my problematic fav ship, I originally also wanted to do a drawing of hannigram (left) and oncest (right), but ended up not really having the motivation to make two more. So have those messy lines for them hvisiygjshvv

3) Little alien design I made after my friend suggested to make a collab between her very psychedelic drawing and my little creature. An idea we had a couple months ago but never really ended up making it.

4) Doodling of Koseki (and Genji), of course I doodle them a lot. I most likely worked on this while in a zoom class, since I need to do something of my hands while listening to classes (’cause it hard to focus fully only on that otherwise).

5) This was supposed to be a small drawing of symbrock (similar to a traditional one I made at the time). Venom was FINALLY on Netflix Canada at the time and I just had to do something about that ship (which I already had before watching it).

6) This is a WIP started towards the start of the pandemic. This is Haru and Hana wearing mask. Of course Haru as a cherry mask (Hana found it for him), and Hana as a more cutesy mask with bear mouth.

7) So trying at redrawing the Painter after about a year of drawing him first. I somehow prefer the first doodles I have of him, but meh, maybe it’s simply because I hadn’t drawn him in a long time (and that my style changed a little since).

8) A couple random drawing of my three fav adult of bnha. I wanted to draw All Might in the Halloween costume and found that it does fit him well. Same for Aizawa (even if it even more WIP-ish than the first one). Somehow the only one I managed to finished was Mic, looking fab

I really love the story but i have problems with my credit card and can't take part of the partenon, still, even if the answer is no I just wanted to say I really love your art! the short answer is: oh yeah for sure! but you know i can’t keep it short, so i’m gonna hijack this post to like. update.

the thing is, right when i thought i’m going to finally finish off pixelwish, i got extremely busy with uni (getting into masters, starting the masters), commissions (my job) and just like life and all the ensuing brain fog really put a stop to any comic-ing. ever since then i don’t think there has been a day where i haven’t thought to myself “oh boy i bet everyone hates me now because im not making new pages!!” and just feeling generally very guilty.

what i currently have on patreon in regards to pixelwish (my patreon is for all of my art, not only pw, wink wink plug) are as follows:

“concept art” of making the comic, organized by chapter (sketches, thumbs, commentary)

chapters 1 to 4 brought up to the current standard of page quality (i’ve made tiny rewrites, super tiny redraws, fixed typos, relettered the pages and bumped up the general contrast)

an update post from a while ago stating that i have a finished script and nearly finished thumbs for the final chapter.

sooo that brings us up to date i suppose! so the long answer is: yes i will post comic pages from chapter 5 online too, not only on my patreon! my patreon is going to get the new pages exactly when i complete them and i will post the pages online when i have a small batch ready and also some amount of time has passed (im thinking a week or two). right now i am really hoping that pixelwish is going to be a 2020 thing! early 2020! but i really can’t make any promises with how up and down my life has been lol.

the comic online right now is still in it’s old form and i will replace the pages with the spruced up reletters once i have at least one page of chapter 5 done.

So

I won a contest on February and the price was a 3×3" tattoo. I made some research about the artist and the guy was fairly good. Not wanting to fuck it up so badly, I decided to go with a very minimalistic linework of a dog I used to have with some spider lillies. Pretty simple and cute. I speak to the owner of the tattoo shop and she makes my appointment.

This is when I started to regret stuff: the dude who was gonna inject ink onto my skin was about an hour late. I was kind of "eh, shit happens", but something on the back of my mind was bugging me.

When the guy shows up, he has no idea what he was gonna do to me (when I talked to the owner of the shop, she told me she would tell the guy all of the info about it and make sure it all goes well). I was like okay, maybe he forgot. Shit happens. Then, when showing him all of the reference images, dude's like ok, got it. Just lemme train my hand and we'll be good to go.

This is where shit was about to hit the fan. The guy had little to no drawing skills and tried to fucking trace the reference image from my phone screen.

He didn't have a clue on how to draw the flowers, so I showed him several reference images and he goes "AIGHT... I got it bby"

The dude starts tracing the drawing on the tattooing paper with a fucking blunt, thick pencil. I offer him my mechanical pencil so that he could have a more precise lining of the flowers and shit. He goes nel pastel like 4 times about it. I let him redraw the thing I had to draw for him onto the tattoo paper. As the guy was putting the tattoo paper onto my skin, it gets all blurred up and gross. He shrugs and goes "I already have the reference image, so my brain knows what to do".

He goes over and over with those same little fucking lines and an extremely thick needle set and basically goes welp, here goes nothing on the tattoo.

After finishing the lines of what was supposed to be my childhood dog, he goes "pls lemme see that drawing you made of the flower one more time?". I hand it to him. He looks at it for 5 seconds and starts BZZZZTTTTZTZTZTTTTing two "flowers" on it.

Once he's done butchering my leg (I honestly thought nothing much of the pain bc tatts are supposed to hurt and stuff. It was later on I found out he overdid it), dude just goes "WAIT, I forgot to put the white ink" and proceeds to put white ink on what was supposed to be the outer parts of the lines and the insides of the "flowers" he did.

I go out, proud as ever of my first tattoo. My grandma sees it and starts mocking it and saying how it doesn't look like my dog did at all. My mom sees it and says the same. All my family and friends start saying how it looks more like a Kangaroo than a dog and I,start just noticing it and hating it all the more. I also notice how bumpy, shakey, and uneven the lines are and how some of them have some weird shadowing to them that was definitively not there before.

With this, I get sort of fed up with the tattoo and decide to just leave it as it is and wait for a year or so to heal and cover it up.

A few days ago, I wanted to check on how much time I would have to wait bc I thought it was like a year or so.

Turns out I could get it covered after 3-4 months.

I get excited and decide to contact a tattoo shop that does a bunch of girly tatts so that they could cover it up with something beautiful.

They answer me and tell me to contact the artist directly. The girl does some beautiful flower designs and very Junji Ito-like character designs, so I'm obviously pretty hyped to see what she can do for me

We talk for a bit about it and what I would like to cover it up with and also tells me that it'll all be okay and to come over next week to see some possible designs.

Now all I have to do is wait for a bit and see when I can be scheduled for it and how much it would cost.

I really hope I can update this and finish it on a happy note.

(Btw, this is what the tattoo looked like about 5 days after getting it done... I haven't taken many pics of it for some strange reason)

My expedition into the Link's Awakening DX ROM (trying to get palette data)

I had joined another pixel art collab to redraw the game's overworld, but we were struggling a bit figuring out one cohesive color palette to use. The map we had turned up a lot of weird, seemingly out of place colors that didn't seem like they were supposed to be there.

To get to the bottom of it, I took it upon myself to perform a deep dive into a ROM of the game and find all of the palette indexes used by the overworld.

At first I tried paring down the palette thinking it was just a result of the person who ripped it originally some years ago, but things were still not adding up--the palette seemed fine on its own but felt off.

I then tried using an emulator to pull palette indexes straight from the game, but it got a bit tedious. I later came across a tool used primarily for level editing the ROM, but could also edit palettes and made it a lot easier to rip them. I pulled all 31 indexes used by the overworld and found even MORE colors that didn't seem to be correct, or simply just filler.

For context, one index is composed of 8 palettes of 4 colors each, and one palette is applied to 8x8px tiles where needed--each screen uses one full index, though some are shared between screens.

I finally just decided to use the editor to re-rip the map into Aseprite, *screen by screen,* to ensure we had the correct palette. For reference the overworld map has 256 individual screens (160x112px each), *and* I took a deeper dive into a blog documenting a disassembly of the ROM to figure out how the game applies its palette data.

For starters, the game actually has TWO sets of GFX. One is taken from the original monochrome release of the game and is loaded when the game is played on the OG Game Boy or a Game Boy Pocket. The other is used when playing on a Game Boy Color or Advance. Both are stored in monochrome, and external palette data is applied to the latter at runtime.

Back in Aseprite, I specifically sectioned off major areas on the map to their own separate layers to decipher this. There's so many completely arbitrary colors used only for one specific tile or screen and never again elsewhere. To point out some examples:

- Yarna Desert uses several close shades of yellow and orange to comprise the quicksand pit, as well as a unique green on the skulls seen in the sand.

- The dead trees in Tabahl Wasteland use a somewhat lighter off-white than the one used on the rest of the map. This is also used in some sections of water tiles. I have no idea why this is.

- The Mysterious Woods uses several colors exclusive to that area.

- Mamamu Yan's house in Mabe Village uses unique purples for its roof. A similar house in Animal Village uses unique pinks for its roof.

- Both Face Shrines use a unique, near-black purple on the pillars and some Armos Statues.

- Trees in the Rapids Ride use unique greens.

- Kanalet Castle uses unique reddish-brown tones to compose the castle walls.

- Gopanga Swamp uses a unique orange.

- The Signpost Maze uses a unique red and an orange for the flower tiles.

- The exterior of Eagle's Tower uses unique greenish stone colors.

- The spots on the Wind Fish's egg use a unique pink.

- The entrance to Key Cavern has a unique light purple for one very specific tile.

I did accomplish what I set out to do, and got every color that is actually used in the overworld directly from the ROM. But god DAMN Nintendo was smoking something fierce back then.

I know way more about how this game works than I ever expected to, so it was an educational experience if nothing else. I do not know if any other black-cartridge GBC games do this, but I imagine so now.

Process and wip images for A House That Holds Long Limbs

You can read the pages for part 1 here (full complete version will be linked from YYH North Bound master post whenever it’s done.)

Every so often I get questions about how I work, and I also enjoy reading about how other creators make things, so perhaps this might be interesting and useful to somebody out there too. I’ve talked about my process before but never really documented and shared it WHILE working on a project, so here you can see some of my thinking and decision-making (and poor habits lol) a bit more immediately, alongside screenshots, photos and scans.

Very long, everything is below the cut, and apologies to people on mobile and anywhere else this goofs up.

One question I get a lot is “do you start with words or pictures when creating a comic?” I jump between both a lot. That said, I tend to lean more heavily on words when documenting ideas in the early stages of a project. This is because, for me:

Words pack a lot of punch in conveying detail quickly. They work better when I need to quickly communicate something extremely specific to future me. I’m a sloppy drawer, so my sketches tend to make future me squint and go, “What the hell was this supposed to be?!”

A great deal of my thinking and planning is done during crowded commutes. It’s more convenient to jot notes on my phone than to whip out my sketchbook and a pen.

(For a while I thought it’d be awesome to have some sort of app where I can type notes AND have an accompanying thumbnail sketch, and be able to drag them around or break them out into more or fewer pages. At one point years ago I thought about creating a custom app... but ultimately too lazy/busy and my current process works well enough. If anyone wants to take this idea and run with it, please feel free to do so and just let me know about it so I can try it haha.)

I usually start with a few lines summarizing the gist of the idea, enough that’s recognizable and I don’t forget the important things to build off from. From there, I start point-form outlining the stuff that needs to happen, structuring them into key scenes/parts. These scenes are not always fleshed out in order - I just add to them whenever I have ideas for that part. 

Long Limbs, for example, had a progression like this:

Overall story idea: “horror story with rokurokubi, key plot point(s) happens, the end.” (There was a bit more detail than this, obviously, but we’re avoiding spoilers here.)

Initial description for Part 1 of the story: “Hokushin lured to go to somewhere. Separated from Raizen. HOW??????”

After letting it simmer for while, a solution: “Hokushin annoyed at Raizen. Opportunity for him to get away and go do his own thing.”

Gradually more detail: “Stranger invites him to go to this place to look into something/maybe has a paid job that needs to be done and Raizen is busy goofing off or whatever.”

Problem. I couldn’t resolve this chain of thought to my satisfaction. What kind of task/job can someone convince Hokushin to do on his own when he doesn’t know this person/it seems questionable? And how long will the conversation need to run to establish this as believable?

This was starting to get convoluted and I was getting annoyed because it was turning into a burden in being able to continue the story AND IT WASN’T EVEN THAT IMPORTANT. I decided to abandon this path of thinking, and left the entire story for a while.

Much later (like months?), I had an idea: “Mysterious person drops something, piques Hokushin’s curiosity.” Aha! Hokushin’s own initiative. Simple and plausible enough. HOORAY NO MORE THINKING. LET’S DRAW.

Then I realized, oh shoot, I need to figure out who this mysterious person is and what they dropped. More time passes. And so on… in between I’m always working on other things, so there’s no real creator’s block - at some point I start thinking about this comic again, and ideas work themselves out to some decent level of satisfaction and link together. Thanks subconscious!

Eventually, enough key scenes are fleshed out that I feel confident enough to turn this into a real thing. At present, for example, not all scenes in Long Limbs are totally worked out, but I’ve got enough that I ran ahead with Part 1.

This is a close-to-final version. The === on top is just to separate this from notes on other stories or ideas. This is the beginning of the document, but this document actually includes many other notes and stories for North Bound. I delete them as I finish and post the pages. Every so often I wonder if I should bother keeping them, but they’ve been refined throughout the process and usually don’t bear much resemblance to the original jotted notes anymore. Long Limbs was originally planned to be a later story in North Bound, but I got especially excited about it and fleshed it out further than the others. When I reviewed the earlier stories, I didn’t think there’d be a big continuity or reader experience issue if this was finished and posted first. So I moved the messy notes for this story to the top of the document. 

The page breakdown for the script is done by me generally picturing in my head how I might want the scene to go and how much action I might be able to fit on the page for good effect. I’ll sometimes start paginating without thumbnails, and sometimes will do both side by side (thumbnail and update pagination in tandem).

As you might imagine, pagination frequently changes. For example, you’ll see the script above is 9 pages instead of 10.

The original script for this section was broken up into maybe 4-6 pages, with 5-7 being more condensed.

When I started thumbnailing, I found it felt too cluttered and moved too fast.

So I stretched out the part of Hokushin and the mystery girl exchanging glances, and added pages to be able to create a (hopefully) more cinematic feel and really focus on the reason they catch each other’s eye - the bandages on their necks.

I then went back to the Google Doc and updated the script to line it up better.

I was also tweaking the dialogue at the same time and didn’t want to forget any key phrasing I liked. Dialogue is another thing I get really hung up over, often changing words up to the last second. (Sometimes this is because I messed up the size of the speech bubble, if I’m lettering on the computer...)

Thumbnails:

Pretty close to the final in this case - mainly because the sequence is pretty simple and straightforward and not many people are involved. I keep my thumbnails very crappy and rough so that I don’t get upset later when I can’t redraw something as good as the thumbnail. Bottom right was a quick attempt at designing the mystery girl.

Once I think the thumbnails are good enough - translation: I get impatient and just want to start drawing - I proceed to pencils for the actual page.

Throughout all this, I’m repeatedly reviewing script and thumbnail and playing sequences out in my head and then trying to figure out how to better direct the “camera” and the action. I may go back to the script and the thumbnails even as I’m finetuning the actual page if I encounter issues. You can see in both the script and the thumbnails that there are still deviations in the dialogue and the art from the final. Here are a few examples:

Page 3: The panels were originally 1) the setting, 2) Hokushin with his arms folded, 3) Raizen laughing, 4) we see that Hokushin is watching Raizen. After reviewing the thumbnail, I felt it’d be a better setup to flow into the scene if I switched panels 2 and 3. That’s closer to how you’d experience it in real life, or how it might be directed in a shot sequence: you enter an area/place, you hear the sound of some guy’s loud laughter filling the air, then the camera zooms up to the annoyed expression of this one particular dude and you see he’s staring at the laughing guy. Moving from bigger ambience to smaller details around the room.

Page 7: The girl was originally turning in the other direction (hard to tell because I redrew it right on top of the original sketch lol). However, this meant all the directional action would be pointing to the right - Hokushin is facing the right, and when he leaves the bar he’s angling towards the right side of the page. Facing the direction that readers will read in gives a sense of driving the action forward, while facing the opposite direction provides a bit of a mental stop. (This is something from Scott McCloud that always stuck with me.) So, I flipped the girl around.

Page 8: Script has Hokushin going “What’s this?”. When thumbnailing, I thought, “obviously it’s self-evident he’s wondering what this is when he picks it up”. It added nothing to the panel, and the speech or thought bubble would have interrupted the smooth action of him picking up the paper. So, axed.

The damn friggin’ bar and gambling: You’ll see the script mention this, and at one point I actually had the guy standing across from Raizen saying “Is this guy drunk?” I’m actually not sure if they’re in a bar or if Raizen is drinking, but neither were important to the actual story because I just needed Raizen and Hokushin to be in a place where Raizen could hang out with humans and be stupid. So I dropped these details. This is mainly because I ran into historical research problems about bars and alcohol during the Kamakura period (more on that near the end of this post), and this was the only way to stop myself from getting hung up on trying to make it “perfect” and “correct” and just get it done. 

Drawing the actual pages. This part is fun!

Inking the actual pages. THIS PART IS NOT FUN :( 

I don’t have very steady hands and I get very anxious about messing things up, so inking always takes me the longest. (I also get distracted easily, e.g., ink two lines and then surf tumblr for ten minutes lol). I’ve improved a lot since I started drawing comics much more frequently a couple years ago, and my choice of tools and style has helped a lot (I lean to variable lines and sketchy style, which is more forgiving than, say, a very precise art style with fixed-width pens) but I still get nervous at this stage.

I’m very lazy so I usually stick with one tool for inking. For Long Limbs I tried to effort more and actually used three. Right to left: Sailor fude de mannen for panel borders and text, Muji pen for artwork (0.4 because that was the only size available at the store when I went to get my refill), Pentel pocket brush for filling in blacks. I refill the fude de mannen and the pocket brush with fountain pen inks.

I usually ink panel borders first, then speech bubbles, then everything else. I hop all over the place and pages are generally in varying stages of completion. I also sometimes add in some more text lines because it seems like a good idea at the time - Hokushin’s complaint on page 3 about how he should have left Raizen when he got into a fight with a fish-seller in a previous story, for example. Sometimes these work, sometimes I regret it later and edit it on the computer.

Cover thumbnails and pencil sketch:

The one in the page thumbnails was the original idea, but then I thought, “seems kinda cliched. Can I get a more interesting angle where he’s not looking straight at the viewer?” (OK, his eyes are covered, but you know what I mean.) I quickly tried a few other angles and compositions, didn’t like them and ended up going with pretty much the original idea, but more zoomed in.

In the thumbnails, you can see all my little x’s indicating “ehhhh I don’t like this”. I wanted something with a particular mood/atmosphere especially with all the hands and arms, and I was conflicted between zooming out (for more environment and more arms, and the focus on the “long limbs” part of the title) or having a tighter, more close up shot. Ultimately I think the latter works better as it conveys a sense of claustrophobia, and it’s more intimate which supports the idea of psychological horror. ALSO IT’S SEXY (maybe???). The end.

Other random thoughts:

I took a lot of heart/inspiration/motivation from Togashi’s last few volumes of Yu Yu Hakusho to keep the backgrounds as lazy - I mean sparse - as possible and also speech bubbles over plain backgrounds lmao. I think it takes a lot of confidence (or maybe laziness) to be so minimalist and restrained, and it’s an impressive and economical way of working. I was always impressed that when reading those pages of his for the first time, the lack of detail never really bothered me - you had everything you needed for your brain to comfortably fill in the gaps and complete the sense of narrative and story progression, and there are still visual flourishes when the situation calls for it. So I’m trying to bring a bit of that tighter philosophy in.

Research. I struggle a LOT with not getting bogged down by details, especially when it’s something “just” for fun or “just” a fancomic. I have very lovely and helpful friends and family who every so often patiently allow me to whine and bounce things off of them, help me look things up, and/or tell me when I’m getting myopic about stuff. For all the North Bound comics, finding quick and useful historical references for the time period has been a challenge. There’s a ton about aristocracy and warriors but very little about the ordinary/common people, not surprisingly. I frequently question my instincts about what makes sense because I tend to automatically draw on similar/equivalent Chinese culture (there was certainly lots of cross-over, but not always appropriate/relevant) or Edo period references (wrong time frame! Too far in the future). I often end up losing a ton of time trying to find something with roundabout searches, and then give up and look at other comics I have close enough to the time period. And then referencing those and compounding whatever historical errors they have in them. (e.g., “Well if it was good enough for Osamu Tezuka’s Phoenix it’s good enough for this rando fancomic!”) I just would like historical/subject matter experts to know I did try...

First thing y’all should know is that I don’t ship a lot in Naruto. I used to and I’ve tried recently but for some reason, most ships are really squicky for me. I mean no disrespect to the shippers or anything, but Naruto is just a fandom that I cannot really ship in. I’d love to and I’ve tried to force myself to read fics for ships but I just ))); Also forgot this was supposed to be in order, oops. 

So I’ll put next to each one “ship” or “brotp” so you know. Most of these will be platonic. 

Rules: List your top 10 Naruto ships in order and then tag 10 people you’re curious about.

1. NejiTen (ship). Since this is actually a ship, it goes first haha. I’ve always, always, always loved Neji and Tenten together. They just go together. I dunno why I like them so much since I hated Neji as a kid and Tenten didn’t get much screen time so I didn’t know much about her.  2. ShikaTema (ship). Another ship, so it goes first. I like their opposing personalities, the snark, the sarcasm, and the whole “crap, they’re hot UHH OH YEAH? WELL ... I DON’T NEED YOUR HELP” tension that runs through most of their interactions in the original series. But I heard they kinda ruined it in Boruto );  3. Kakashi & Gai (brotp). Eternal rivals, polar opposites, total absurdity. I love it. It reminds me a lot of my relationship with my younger sis (who absolutely adores Gai and Rock Lee and has about as much enthusiasm and energy as them, also her favorite color is green so...).  4. Kakashi & Yamato (brotp). I haven’t gotten to see them interact a lot yet, but I love them both so much. Although whenever I think of Yamato, I think of Kakashi just being like, “Hm? Oh, him? Yeah. He’s my best friend. From years ago. We’ve known each other forever. We’ve been in contact since before the series started. He wasn’t totally just made up a few minutes ago because I wasn’t supposed to be a main character and so my backstory didn’t matter much...”  5. Naruto & everyone (brotp). Naruto is so cool because he makes friends everywhere, anywhere, all the time. He’s the type of person I wish I could be - to befriend people, encourage them, knock some sense into them ... hahaha. He’s such a sunshine boy!! I love it!!  6. Gaara & Lee (brotp). They’re so opposite - even more so than Kakashi and Gai. But idk I love the idea of them being friends and hanging out and talking and training. (Again, I was a bit like Gaara in middle school and my sister is 100% Lee ...)  7. Kotetsu & Izumo (brotp). I LOVE THEM. SO MUCH. I didn’t even know that much about them (still don’t really lolol) but I’ve included them in stories since like 2008. They’re just so wonderful. Idk.  8. Shikamaru & Choji (brotp). This is like my favorite friendship in the entire series. I LOVE SHIKAMARU AND CHOJI, THEY ARE SUCH WONDERFUL CHARACTERS AND GREAT FRIENDS AND THEY LOVE AND PROTECT AND DEFEND EACH OTHER AND AHHHH!!!! I think I envy them because while I have childhood friends (known them for 12+ years), I’m not super close with them like Shika and Choji are. But can anyone really replicate that friendship?!  9. Literally any of the “buddy system” partners in the Akatsuki. I love them so much. I just realized that I almost exclusively drew the Akatsuki when I was in the fandom. Including Tobi and Deidara as cheerleaders. It’s my masterpiece ngl. I should redraw it.  10. Zabuza & Haku (brotp MY ACTUAL FAMILY). This is my top brotp, actually. They are my family. I actually adopted them. Zabuza is my grumpy uncle and Haku is my sweet darling cousin and we live together in a cute house and everyone is happy and alive and together. It’s been this way since 2007.

Recent Senyuu news

Hiiii, sorry, I’ve been slacking on keeping the tumblr side of Senyuu up to date with recent Senyuu news (due to real life running me over real good but that’s neither here nor there) so I’ll do a kind of quick collection/summary of what’s been going on. To be fair, there usually isn’t this much news all at once anymore so it took me by surprise. +_+

First, Senyuu Main Quest Part 2 Volume 6, aka the final volume, is now up for preorder at your store of choice. It’ll be released May 9th.

There is a limited edition where a picture book drawn by Haruhara will be included.

You can check out the link on Amazon Japan here, Kinokuniya US here, and CDJapan has the regular edition up but I didn’t see the limited edition. It’ll probably be there eventually though.

Second, Haruhara made a Twitter poll the other day. It’s already over, so sorry I didn’t put it up earlier with a translation for people to participate in. The content is as follows:

Since all the work for Main Quest is beginning to calm down, I figured I would finally get moving on some of the things I planned and said “I’m gonna do this!”. But just saying “I’m gonna do this!” was a bit too much I suppose, I would like to request your participation for what I should focus on first. “I’m gonna do it!”

There were over 5000 votes, and the doujinshi won by a landslide haha. By the way, I picked the LINE stickers...!

But these are all things that Haruhara plans to do, the results of the poll only determine what order he’s going to tackle them in. Everyone look forward to it...!

The doujinshi is something that I can’t put into Senyuu+. I’ve wanted to draw the situation where “Between post-Part 4 Alba and Creasion during the time he was running wild, who’s stronger?”. If this scenario was in Senyuu+, I’d have to think of a reason for why these two were fighting and it’d become official and established history in canon. If it’s just a doujinshi, it’d just be “Okay! Bam! Boom!” and everything’s all good. That’s the kind of attitude I want to draw it with.

The LINE stickers are something I never had time to get around to. About two years ago, when I tried making some, I only thought of making the usual ones like “Good morning” or “good night”. But I feel that since probably everyone already has a bunch of those types of stickers, I’d like to solicit help from requests for “This panel in this chapter” or “This scene” and I’ll redraw them in the style of LINE stickers.

The acrylic charms are just what they are. I think making 15 of them was too many, so the number would be less, but I’d also like to make them for characters that I didn’t include last time.

The livetalk is also just what it is. But! Only in regions where I haven’t done it yet! I want it to be an event with real interactions, you see.

And finally, the thing that had Twitter in an absolute frenzy several hours ago: Alba in a wedding dress.

Haruhara was thinking that he’d like to have the doujinshi released before summer, but he realized with a start that he’ll be busy until then with his upcoming wedding ceremony. He and his wife only had a private event before since they didn’t have time, but they’re making the arrangements for a proper one.

The Alba picture is something he drew with the intention of attaching to the invitation emails, but he forgot about it and didn’t use it. RIP. But also congratulations, sensei!!!!!

With that being the case, stuff from the Twitter poll will start being released around mid to late summer, etc etc... Also a new issue of his doodle collection booklets. And of course Senyuu+ will still be updating.

Favorite Disney movie and princess. Top 5 shahrukh khan films 🎥

Oh man that first question is so hard. Second question kind of easy, so let’s start with Mr. Khan first:

Top 5 6 Shah Rukh Khan movies (based on the fact I’ve rewatched only 6 of his movies that I’ve seen so far and I didn’t want to leave any of them off the rec list):

6. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)  - (7/10) I know it’s supposed to be a love triangle but it comes off as an OT3 kind of movie. Some parts of it could have used some tweaking but overall it makes me feel all the feels and I just really love all the characters. 

5. Dil to Pagal Hai (1997) - (7/10) This was one of the first dozen or so Hindi movies I watched when I started watching about one movie a night a summer or two ago, and I fell in love with it, Madhuri Dixit, and Karisma Kapoor. It’s so 90′s it hurts me in a good way. If I ever get around to my screencap redraws I want to eventually  draw the ending because I love the use of color and Dixit is so pretty. 

4. Darr (1993) (8/10) - One of the few SRK as a proper bad guy and not a cool ass kind of bad guy. Basically he plays a spoiled loser who stalks his university crush and it keeps building until a climax on a boat. As much as I love Sunny Deol, though, he seems kind of old for his role as the husband, but that’s kind of par for the course with any movie industry really. The Kiran song haunts me sometimes. 

3. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) - This movie, Like Dil to Pagal Hai is also so 90′s it hurts me in a good way. I love all the characters and it plays into the concept of you should love your best friend, which is something I have believed strongly for a long time now. I think some parts of it could have been tweaked, but the ending sequence between Aman, Anjali, and Rahul really makes the movie for me. 

2. Mohabbatein (2000) - This movie is Dead Poets Society (1989) meets Love’s Labour’s Lost to a degree, which means it was already going to win me over no matter what. I watched it when I was in a kind of dark psychological state. I was grappling with the realization that I likely was never going to get a romantic partner or have children someday, and it sent me into a point in which I was closing myself off to a lot of people. I can’t remember what the exact lines are off the top of my head but there’s something Rahul says in this movie that really touched me and kind of made me realize closing myself off was really dumb. And that’s when I started to accept my situation and move on in a more healthy manner. Which is weird, I know, but I don’t really have many people to talk, let alone who would want to hear me talk about depressing things, so sometimes these types of revelations come from movies instead of real life for me. 

1. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) - I’m just going to be up front and honest here if Rahul and Rohan weren’t 11 years apart in this movie, I’m not sure it’d have made the same magnitude of impact on me or become so special to me. This movie plays into the part of me that loves Little Women. I’m not really sure why, so I’d have loved this movie anyway even if the main guys weren’t the same age difference I have with my older sister. It’s so so so so SO rare for me to find siblings with our age difference, and so very rare for me to relate to a character who’s the younger sibling instead of the older sibling since more frequently siblings in TV and movies reflect the age difference I have with our brother (5 years). This movie just plays my emotions like a violin. When our dog died, this is the movie I watched because I knew it would help me not feel so stupid for crying alone in my bedroom.

Okay, now for favorite Disney movie and Disney princess. This is a hard choice because I grew up with a lot of Disney movies and I was fascinated by them because I am hardwired for writing and contemplating how others write things, though I’m more analytical on purpose about that now than I used to be as a kid.

Anyway…

Favorite Disney movies:

Live action: The Parent Trap (1961) - I watched this one into the ground. I just loved all of it. I’m pretty sure I could recite it while watching it even to this day

Not about princesses: Robin Hood (1973)  - Historical fiction is my jam

Princess movie: Tie between Sleeping Beauty (1959), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and Aladdin (1992)  - Sleeping Beauty was my go to fave princess movie from the moment I watched it. I also liked that, compared to other princess movies before it, Prince Phillip actually does stuff and truly conducts a proper rescue. Beauty and the Beast is on par because when I was six I couldn’t believe there was a Disney princess who looked just like me and read voraciously like I did and I really liked that she thought Gaston was a moron. Aladdin I love because the story is just so engaging and the characters are as well. I also liked that Jasmine and Aladdin both had amble parts to play, which gave me more to relate to than some of the other princess movies that came before

Favorite Disney princesses: 

Aurora because she was my first favorite 

Belle because she really validated me as a kid

Jasmine because she stood up for what she wanted and she was just as much the hero as Aladdin was

Tiana because she has a lot of morals, values, and hobbies that align with my own. I also know I’d have loved her as a kid too.

Man, when I said that drawings didn’t need to have been made that day, I wasn’t kidding.

This is a Fakemon I made when I was eight. Its name is Charade, rhymes with parade. No, I’m not sure if I knew that charade was an actual word when I named it, but maybe I heard someone say it and was like “I’M NAMING THE CAT THING THAT” or if I just threw a couple syllables together and used what stuck. It’s a Fire type, which is totally apparent!

I’ve cropped the page so you can’t see my description of it, but I’d like to point out that the smudged text next to the face (over top of white-out, btw) is pointing to the lips and says “boys have pink”. That’s right, not only did I apparently come up with the concept of gender differences in Pokemon far before Gen 4, but I made the boys the ones with pink lips. I think it ended up looking really bad when I did it, and so I decided that the boys were the ones who got to look dumb.

The idea of it was that it had tails for feet and a foot for a tail. WACKY. When I had to draw a foot, I drew some sort of elephant foot. Or is it a soolnd? Those are horses tails, too, I guess.

OKAY I KNOW YOU WANT THE DESCRIPTION so here: “This Pokemon is quite rare, but if you catch one, it’s good luck! And remember that they lay eggs! It can run as fast as lightning. And its strongest Attack would be Negative (which is anything.)” Why I specified that it laid eggs is a mystery, since Gen 2 was out by this point. I don’t think I got the memo about breeding. Negative by the way was supposed to be like Metronome but you could pick which attack it used, in which case why bother learning anything else I guess. Maybe if it only had 1 PP it would work.

I actually played as this thing on the playground when we played Pokemon. Its signature move is Spinning Bullet, which was represented by me spinning my arms around in the “if you get hit, it’s your own fault!” windmill motion really fast and bashing the opponent in the face. It was supposed to turn Charade into basically what Fire Rocket did for Flamedramon, like it would launch into the air from the speed of its attack.

Above the drawing is a red circle in which Charade is depicted performing a bunch of attacks (NOT UPLOADING THANKS) including one called Flame Shield, which forms the red circle. Sooooo... Charade is Flamedramon? I wonder if I knew that I was stealing that from Digimon or not.

The page was laid out to resemble the Pokemon Handbook I had at the time, because this was a book I was making about my Fakemon with my fake region. All I knew about the region itself was that Charade was the only starter (because it then evolved into a Water type, a Bug type and a Grass type, filling all three starter choices for no good reason) and the professor was named Eureka. That wasn’t even a clever pun or anything, I was trying to name her Erika like the chick from Medabots. So basically I stole everything I ever thought of, goodnight.

The last thing of note is that I had a symbol to denote that the Pokemon was a Legendary, which is only ever used on this page. The starter is a Legendary. I just wanted to to feel special.

OKAY SO this was a bit of a cop-out, uploading this. So here’s a version of Charade I drew a few days ago instead!

I tried to capture the spirit of the thing, hence the catlike nose instead of the snout (?????? why Nicole) of the original. It also was supposed to have open eyes and not Brock eyes, I remember.

I have previously tried to redraw some of these old abominations (oh don’t worry, I have ENTIRE BOOKS worth of these things, this blog should have some steam for a while now!) but every time I do, I start with this one because it was my mascot, my Pikachu. Essentially, I have a few different versions of Charade, in my “Old drawings DON’T LOOK I’M HIDEOUS” folders. Maybe they’ll see the light of day on this blog.

I hope this thing gave you a laugh at least :) come, let’s tear down this eight year old girl and her ambitions of being a Pokemon designer! (yeah, seriously, that was my dream job)
