If you know me, or follow me on instagram, then you know I am the type of dog mom that truly believes she couldn’t possibly love her future human children as much as she loves her pug.

Dusty and my journey started out a little bumpy: I was 7 days into grieving the sudden and traumatic loss of my 10month old puppy when I came home and found my mom on the couch with this tiny pug face looking out at me. Y’all...most of you probably would have been SO happy. But I was SO heartbroken and in the middle of deep grief...that was NOT what I wanted at that time. I did not bond with her, I didn’t even love her at first, and if I’m being totally honest: I tried to see if we could give her back. But then this little part of me knew I was being horrible and this sweet little baby didn’t know about my loss, it wasn’t her fault. So, I decided to make her as different from Cosette as possible, and bring her by my side as my buddy. I don’t know how or when, but she went from my buddy to my baby, and I mean it when I say I don’t know where my soul begins and where her’s ends. I don’t know what life was before her, and I start to completely sob if I consider that there could be life after her.

For all the joy she brings me, all the joy her sweet face and cute little pug butt brings others: she deserves to feel as good as she can. To be doted upon, to get snuggles and treats, and to live a healthy long life. She has come with a fair share of health issues over her lifetime, and so I have done EXTENSIVE research on things she can take regularly to help with the chronic issues she has, as well as any that may arise as she is about to turn 10.

1. RAW FOOD

Now, first let me say she does get 1/4 cup of dry kibble we order through Chewey.com from our vet. But I hated the idea of her on some crap kibble through Science Diet, so I decided to do a lot of digging and find a happy medium. The reason she has the 1/4 cup of the vet prescribed food is because when she was a puppy we discovered her body doesn’t break down fat well: and causes extreme digestive distress, which as a baby made her bleed while she went #2 and THERE IS NOTHING MORE UPSETTING THAN YOUR TINY BABY PUPPY LOOKING AT YOU WITH SAD PUG EYES POOPING BLOOD! So, after speaking with our vet: we put her on this kibble and it helped IMMEDIATELY. She has a VERY sensitive digestive system (someday my husband will figure that out and stop sharing his whipped cream with her lol) and because of that, I make sure what she eats and the supplements she gets with her meals are things that help keep her digestive system functioning properly. (Quick shout out because I care about my pug’s gut health as much as my own and my client’s which is why I think every human needs to do my 28 day detox program!)

I tried companies that like MAKE FOOD FOR YOUR DOG, and I even tried making food myself: but listen, mama works...mama can’t be like having customized meals sent to the house. Plus: some of the stuff used isn’t best for HER. And so, the kibble she has benefitted the most from I get at The Healthy Spot and it’s Primal Pronto. Every time time she’s out I switch flavors. We stick to Chicken or Turkey and Sardine because she had responses to the other ones that were’t favorable: again, she’s sensitive like her mama. But they say to swap each time because it helps their body function better. And I agree!

It wasn’t hard for me to decide on raw food being the majority of her diet: I mean, she’s a dog...they can’t cook unfortunately, and kibble is human-made. Just like I don’t eat spam or other weird processed stuff: Dusty shouldn’t either! She has benefited greatly since going on the raw diet: so I highly suggest that to all pet parents.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Originally, I started adding just a capful to her breakfast because ACV actually helps dogs when they have diarrhea OR when they’re constipated. Again, always been obsessed with my dog’s gut health! But then I started doing even more research and the benefits are insane: It’s a natural flea and tic repellant, it aids with hot spots, helps arthritis by breaking down calcium deposits that form around older dog’s joints, and literally so much more!

Dusty, and most pugs, have VERY sensitive skin. Pronto came out with one and so I tried that one...and she threw up more than she’s ever thrown up in her ENTIRE life. So, Healthy Spot took it back no problem and let me know this probably means she’s allergic to turmeric as that’s the only difference in ingredients. There was a period of time that she was off of goats milk: and the itchy skin returned with a vengeance. I went to get a supplement to help, and upon talking to the staff they urged me to first get her back on the goats milk before spending tons of money on more supplements/powders and the such. And guess what? Within 2 days she was back to normal! So, I make sure we NEVER run out!

4. Juvinate K9

This I got within the last year because for a few days I noticed her randomly limping, sometimes it was subtle, and a few times it was really dramatic. And I FREAKED OUT! I did hours of online research and found this supplement that she now gets with breakfast and dinner.

Sometimes I miss, so never wear a shirt you like because a little fish oil can really mess up your morning. But knowing she’s getting a high quality fish oil with breakfast versus spending MORE on a “dog” fish oil keeps me from getting too upset when I get a little salmon oil on my PJs.

BELIEVE in the HYPE: CHILL out and ground yourself already! While many of us are wondering about the efficacy of CBD and whether its benefits truly apply to our individual needs, adding a ‘drop’ of wellness (TONIC) into your daily selfcare routine has never been so easy.

As hard as it is to believe, they are six months old! From those tiny little babies that entered our lives so unexpectedly to half a year old. Every day that passes their personalities get bigger and so do they. As I have told y’all in earlier post, we kept 3 kits Cyan, Kami, and George, as well as mom, Carmel. Two kittens went to new home, Jinx to our daughter Megan and Cleo to our friend Gabby. Call us nuts but having six cats is mostly fun, but sometimes crazy and frustrating. We have mamma, Carmel, the three kittens, and our boys Fabio, who is 12 and Beeker who is now 5. Okay now on to what you came here to read, all about the kittens, just 1 more thing; a new product I found for pets, that I highly recommend! Read on….

Well I told y’all in the last update we were attempting to toilet train, at least, Carmel and the kittens, so much for that idea! Only Kami got it and only part of the time so we gave up on that experiment! We are now moving to an automatic flushing potty, because litter boxes with six cats is ridiculous! Well any way you put it six cats is ridiculous, but my husband loves them and since he was a deprived military brat who was only allowed to have a hamster I’ll give him this one. Who am I kidding, I love them too and they are good company while I’m here all day by myself writing. They do get aggravating when I’m trying to work and they are determined to “help” by getting in my lap and pushing keys on the laptop or playing with the iPad screen. I must admit they have been good for me, something I haven’t talked about is losing my best friend of 13 years in late May. Boudreaux was my first dog and I had him since he was just six weeks old. He had been with me through thick and thin, my illnesses, the auto accident, the long recovery from my injuries, and the hard work it took to get back to this close to normal. I miss him terribly, as I type tears spill down my cheeks, loosing him is still to tender on my heart to talk about. The kittens entered our life just six weeks before Boo left for heaven and they were a God send! Literally!! They have kept me entertained and distracted from my grief.

George is the biggest six month old kitten I’ve ever seen! His nickname after he was born was Bruiser, and his size still measures up to that name. However, his personality couldn’t be more opposite! He’s just a big ‘ol lovable orange teddy bear! He’s calm, cool, collected and loves nothing more than sitting in your lap purrrrring and sleeping. When he does manage to gather the energy to play his favorite toy is a drinking straw! So much so I can’t have a straw in my glass and take my eyes off it! He stole my straw out of my glass today, with it in my hand! About the only other thing he loves is a tunnel my husband bought them and it’s even better if his straw isn’t to long and he can get it in his tunnel.

Kami is still the sweetheart of the bunch. She has big green eyes that are always watching and learning. She has an old ratty mouse (pun intended) that she loves and if she’s going to play it’s with that mouse or with her siblings. She loves to sleep on the couch by her mamma, and when my husband gets home from work she is in his lap. I have even seen her back down the sixty-five pound dog because my husband is HER person! She wears a bright pink collar with a bell that’s not needed cause she is mostly chill all the time. She did give us a scare a couple weeks ago, when she developed a cough out of the blue. After a couple of days of this odd, random, cough we took her in to the veterinarian and she was diagnosed with asthma. Yes, cats can have asthma! After a steroid shot and a round of antibiotics, which she was wonderful about taking, she’s not had any further issues. But just in case we changed to a dust free litter and took the lid off the litter box. We haven’t made to move to the flushable litter box yet, but it’s on the top of my wish list on Amazon!

Cyan! What can I say… I could write a book just about her! I am her person! Period end of story! Just ask her. She is active, crazy, and oh so smart! She loves to play fetch, especially at five in the morning, when I am trying to sleep. She loves all the toys, balls, the tunnel, scrunchy toys, fuzz, bugs, and on and on. Nothing is safe! She knows, very well, the rules of the house, but doesn’t care and does it anyway! Gets on the table, the counters, swings from the curtains, everything. Where she is concerned the squirt bottle filled with water is my best friend. She saw Fabio on the top of the refrigerator, hiding out from the kittens, and thought I can do that! Never mind it’s a big time no, no and Fabio got in trouble, it took me two weeks with the squirt bottle to break her of getting up there. She is so stubborn and strong willed and keeps me on my toes and laughing a lot! Sometimes I don’t know what I’m going to do with her, but I also have no idea what I’d do without her!

Jinx lives in Michigan, with our daughter and her husband. He is such a handsome boy! He LOVES his dog, Willow, they are best buds and he gets frustrated when Willow goes outside and he can’t go too, but sometimes he try��s to sneak out too, but quickly rethinks that. He is chatty, loves to tell you all about his day while everyone was at work. Mr. Jinx likes to cuddle and try and sneak food away from Hobbes, his older cat brother. He will catch the ceiling fan (see photo), he just knows it! He’s vocal about his breakfast, and his second breakfast and if you even think about missing his dinner!

Cleo (short for Cleopatra) looks the most like her mamma. She is getting more and more color in her coat and even had a beige tip on her tail like mamma. She is snugly, she loves to follow her human mom, Gabby, around and be where she is. She’s totally a mamma’s girl! She likes to play fetch only with milk jug lids. One of her other favorite pass times is bugging her big “sister” Shadow, who was perfectly happy being an only child. She also likes to pull her combo food and water bowl across the floor, just to make a mess for mom! And they all love boxes! We never thought we would have to keep so many boxes!

While looking through my husband’s medical records last week, I noticed his cholesterol levels are not so great. We have been so focused on my husband’s brain, that we have forgotten the rest of his body. His LDL (bad cholesterol) was 128 in June 2016 and are 176 as of January 2017. His HDL (cholesterol) was 37 in June and the VA did not test in January. LDL needs to be under 100. He went from just above optimal to borderline high on his LDL in just 7 months. His HDL needs to be above 40 and his triglyceride levels were ok at 108. Those need to be between 29-149. This just means he’s burning calories just fine. I did a google search to see if his medications are causing his HDL levels to increase and found mixed results. One common side effect with the Depakote he is on is weight gain. My husband is getting a belly since being on these medications and eats like no tomorrow. He’s on 2000MG Depakote, 1000MG of Keppra, and 60MG of Buspirone. All three have a long long list of side effects, but I can’t find anything dealing with cholesterol with 100% certainty. Never the less, some major health changes need to take place for both of us.

Let’s get real for a minute. Our diet is horrible! We have to cut out the fried foods, baked goods, ice cream, pizzas, and overall junk. I’m cleaning house and looked up foods that will lower cholesterol and found a lot of simple and cheap recipes to help us get healthy. I am adding veggies, fruits, whole grains, olive oil, steel cut oatmeal, salmon, sardines (for him lol), albacore tuna, 1% milk, low-fat Greek yogurt, walnuts, almonds, skinless poultry, avocados, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, tofu, and anything else we can find without saturated fats or trans fats. Benecol, Smart Balance, and Control are all good choices for butter. I’m going with low sodium too since I see that most of his medication causes high blood pressure. That means no more processed meats (lunch meat, hot dogs, etc). No more pork (or just pork tenderloin) and only limited lean red meat like sirloin or round. I am ridding us of the coffee, not because it’s bad, but because we use too much flavored creamer, which is very high in fat and cholesterol. We can have green or black tea which helps lower cholesterol.

Hubby goes for about a 1-2 hours walk every day that he doesn’t have all day appointments. I am starting slow due to a bad lower back with my yoga videos for weight loss. I need to lose a whole 78 pounds while he only needs to lose 17. I know we can do it! We have too! I am only getting older a(41) and each year is harder for me to lose the weight. I don’t normally like to take full body pictures because of my weight, but I am going to post up a before picture of me today. Hubby just said he would post a picture too, just as support for me. (sweet). Every month, I will post an update on our progress and a picture of myself. I will be doing yoga every day, eating right, and any other form of movement I can do aside from yoga. The goal is to move more and lose that weight! I will also post any cholesterol levels my hubby has as the doctor orders them. I know he is getting a regular check up at the VA in April so, we will see the levels then for sure.

I found the American Heart Association has a ton of recipes to chose from. I am substituting any oils with just the olive oil. I found one that I liked that called for Sherry or Wine. I am using apple cider instead. The site also had a lot of good tips for weight loss and even quitting smoking. American Heart Association

Anyway, here are the dreaded truth pictures. I am wearing no makeup and you can see my face is broken out from stress *frown*. Hubby is obviously in better shape than me.

As we are getting healthy, I am also looking for ways to help hubby with his seizures in a more healthy way. I have heard a lot about the ketogenic diet for my husband’s seizures. We have talked to a few of his doctors and we did some research. Because of all the side effects of his medications already AND his high cholesterol (which there are claims it can lower), we just don’t want to risk it. A big issue we see with this diet is kidney problems. He already has a high risk of kidney problems with his medications. My husband has a childhood friend that got us thinking about CBD oil AKA medical marijuana. Gideon’s Garden We’ve researched this and have found some promising outcomes for his seizures and anxiety if he takes CBD.

We learned that not everyone responds the same way, so we would have to work VERY closely with all his doctors if he tried this treatment. I would have to monitor him very closely as well. It all seems like a scary transition but, if it gets him off the harmful drugs, I am all for it.

The term also does not include the transfer of low-THC cannabis to a person other than the qualified patient for whom it was ordered or the qualified patient’s legal representative on behalf of the qualified patient.

Since the VA is Federally funded and marijuana is still illegal under Federal Law, no VA doctor will be allowed to prescribe my husband the medication. However, they can work with my husband while he is on these treatments and they can either take him off medication to see if this treatment will work or something close to that. The goal would be to have him off these nasty drugs that cause his terrible side effects (anger, tremors, weight gain, memory issues, kidney problems, and more). We have found only 5 doctors in our area that are listed as approved Doctors under the Florida Law and have no idea what they would charge us to be seen and treated. Since my husband’s VA insurance does not cover the cost of the medication or treatment, it would be out of pocket for us and that’s not an option we can afford right now.

For now, we are going to focus on what we can do for our heath and just save for the CBD treatments.
