A/n: for the amazing and understanding @phry-k hope this is what you were expecting, this is my first fic request on tumblr and I'm glad it's you <3 lmao I'm so sorry if it sucks-

(it was essentially supposed to be hurt/comfort-y y'know deep cover and all but why not make Mycroft to suffer)

Work is fun isn't it? they add to the overall development of the individual. That's what Y/n says to herself for fun. technically it was an apprenticeship training kind of thing. Except it was a terrorist group. and Y/n already has a Secure job, which was the British intelligence.

her Job right now was to infiltrate the the group, Burn and erase every single instruction manual and Kill the Leader, that was all, it was a sleeper-cell group, which meant she didn't have to kill a lot of people. Hallelujah.

"Merry Christmas Mycroft" Y/n straightened her suit, looking at Mycroft in his office. she was finally allowed to come back home, given a joyous six month off for her "exemplary work", technically she wasn't allowed leave, she just annoyed Mycroft into doing it for her. but it all honesty Mycroft did like her, and welcomed her into the Family. but Damn the good god above she had spent too much time with his brother. "And a happy new year!" Y/n cackled, bolting out of the office

"Good God Y/n!" Mycroft yelled after her, looking at the mess in his office. He made the mistake of opening his drawer which was rigged...with confetti. He should've known.

Y/n stood in front of 221b Baker street, It had been over five years since she last saw him. and the big bad Agent was terrified. she took out the spare key, opening the door and walking up the stairs. Mycroft told her about the little Christmas party which was going on, so she was also ready for that. before she could knock on the door, the door opened to reveal who she knew was Dr. John Watson. "hi" she sheepishly waved at him

"Hello, Do I know-"

"Oh Y/n dear you're hear, oh honey look at you, you look so different!" Mrs. Hudson quite literally pushed john away, gathering the girl up in her arms "Oh look at that!" she gasped, her hand reaching up to the gash Y/n had tended to after the showdown with the leader.

"Oh it's nothing." she waved it off "Merry Christmas" she smiled at the older woman

"Merry Christmas honey, come on in." she pulled the woman in "see for yourself what he's done with the place" she whispered to Y/n making her laugh.

"Merry Christmas everyone." she greeted them "I know all of you." she gushed "Dr. Watson, Detective Lestrade and Dr. Hooper." she blabbed with a grin, all of them awkwardly waving back at her.

"Y/n honey, aren't you forgetting something?" Mrs. Hudson nudged her, and her nervousness came back again, she looked at the woman with both anticipation and despair. "He's-"

"Y/n..." her breath hitched when she heard his voice, a soft breath of her name. A breath let out for her and only her. Her name falling out of his mouth after years of it only being in his thoughts.

"Merry Christmas." she smiled softly, Mrs. Hudson quietly moved away with a smile on her face. Y/n let out a small laugh when Sherlock's lanky body collided with hers, instantly picking her up and spinning her around, the second she was on her feet, his head was buried in her shoulder, her fingers immediately tangled in his curly hair, the two holding on to each other like there was no tomorrow. and it was their fear. that one day there won't be a tomorrow with each other.

"Hi" he pulled away, his eyes scanning her now changed self, 5 years was a long time. too long for his liking, when his eyes fell on the gash on her forehead, she followed his line of sight, sighing she cupped his face. The crowd around them looked at each other in confusion and surprise, this was a side of Sherlock they never thought they would see. and now it felt unreal to see.

"Hey, I'm okay." she reassured "You should see the other guy." she remarked

"I find digging six feet tiresome." Y/n let out a laugh, relieved to see him less stressed about her. Before Y/n could get another word out Sherlock's lips crashed on hers, letting out a surprise squeak with wide eyes and heated face, she fell into the kiss eventually, her fingers weaving through his hair while his held her face securely. The two could hear the collective gasps from the room as well as Mrs. Hudson's relieved clapping, but neither of them cared while their sense were filled with each other, A drug which Sherlock longed for, for 5 years, a home which Y/n was eager to go back to.

the two pulled back only when it was absolutely necessary, softly resting their foreheads together, as their bodies heaved, soft laughter shared between the two of them. "I've waited far too long for this." Sherlock exhaled.

"You've got no idea." Y/n chuckled. Suddenly the door to 221B Baker street slammed open. the room was now face to face with the Fury of Mycroft Holmes.

"12 Hours." his nose flared and the two swore they saw smoke coming out of his ears. "you have been in London for 12 hours." The lovers looked at each other in confusion which turned into amusement once Mycroft had shown them the reason for his anger

"It wasn't me!" The two immediately defended in unison, turning to look at each-other with confusion once again.

"wait it wasn't you?" the lover once again spoke in unison.

"I only sprayed it with glitter spray." she threw her arms up in surrender

"I only bedazzled the back of the-" Sherlock stopped himself the two hit with the look of realization

"Oh!" they nodded "yeah it was us" they nervously grinned at the older brother who carried a rather Christmas-y suit. After all it was Christmas in the Holmes family and now the order was restored.

I was wondering if you had any longer podfic recommendations? I like to listen to audiobooks while working and lately I've been listening to podfics. Downloading a few and then listening as I work. Preferably novel type length, just because I can't keep getting my phone to swap the book yk?

hello, Tea! i'm doing fine, preparing to finally return to campus after a week of quarantining at home. how are you?

a confession: i don't really listen to podfics 😬 or podcasts or anything of that variety. i'm more of a visual person than an auditory person, so i prefer to read rather than listen. because of that, my knowledge of podfics and podficcers is rather less. the only active one i am aware of is Podfixx (whose tumblr i have linked and not tagged, because for some reason tumblr isn't letting me tag them 🙄) i went through Podfixx's ao3 to find the longest pods they have, and i've linked all of them here, along with a few other podfics i know of. for some, the length was untagged, so i've added the word count of the fic instead, keeping most of them above 50k since you asked for novel length pods (two of them are below 50k, but i've added them anyway bc i like them 🤭) i haven't heard any of these podfics, but i have read all these fics, and i enjoyed them thoroughly! i hope you find something to your tastes, Tea! and if anyone has podficcers or podfics that fit Tea's request they'd like to share, please do!

He is forced back into the world of Sherlock Holmes, completely unprepared to face the consulting detective.

The extraction is only the beginning for these three men as they face the consequences of past actions.

This is the story of a young consulting detective who wants nothing to do with marriage and an army doctor who wants to find true love. It's 2020 post-Brexit England and the British government is encouraging arranged marriages. Candidates meet through state-run agencies and date in hopes of finding love (and tax benefits). Sherlock doesn't need or want a spouse, at least not until John Watson shows up. Hesitant to give in to his more carnal urges because of the way they derail his mind, how will Sherlock progress toward the more intimate aspects of a relationship? The answer lies in a very special wedding gift.

Pilot/Episode 1: Patching Things Up With Pastiche & Fanfiction

Hi, hello, and the wait is finally over! My name is Blessie, and welcome to the first episode webisode log installation I've decided to call these things an episode for now because why not also let me know what do you actually call these things episode of The Science of Fanfiction, where we take a closer look into our beloved works of fanon because we've all got plenty of time to spare till Season 5. Before I continue, I would like to thank everyone who's liked and reblogged the last few posts before this one. It means a lot for a small and growing Tumblr user like me, and your support is something I cherish more than my modules. You guys rock!

Anyways, like with most things, we have to talk about the boring and bland stuff before we proceed with the fun stuff. For today, we are going to settle the difference between a couple of things: first being the confusion between pastiche and fanfiction; then the distinctions between tropes, clichés, and stereotypes, which we'll tackle the next time. It's important for us to establish their true meanings in order for us to really understand what fanfiction truly is, even if it's merely just a work done for the fandom. I know – it's boring, it's something that shouldn't be expounded that much, but I believe that all forms of writing (unless it's plagiarised) is a work of art — and fanfiction is not something we always talk about. I hope that by the end of this, you'll learn about what they really are as much as I did. Let's begin to talk about the—

So, just as with Sherlock Holmes, all other works of fiction have their own pastiches and fanfiction, and many more original works out there have taken inspiration from them to create their own books. Although they've gained popular attention, this will not be possible if they did not have taken inspiration from the materials their writers had at the time.

For instance, Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' (the second most adapted literary character, next to the consulting detective himself) has been portrayed on the screen over 200 times — from Gary Oldman to Adam Sandler — and has spawned off numerous books and pastiches of its own such as Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot'. Its cultural impact served as a basis of how we see vampires today, since some characteristics of the Count were made by Stoker himself. Stoker's creation is the brainchild of his predecessors and inspirations.

Other than the ongoing hysteria over dead back then and the existing vampire folklore, Stoker also took his inspirations from the published books on vampires he had at hand. He is said to have taken inspiration from Vlad the Impaler, a Romanian national hero known allegedly for having impalement as his favourite method of torture. He is also said to have been inspired by the J. Sheridan Le Fanu's 'Carmilla', a Gothic lesbian vampire novella that predates Dracula by 26 years. I could go on, but hey, we're going back to Sherlock Holmes now before I deviate any further. However, if you want to know about Dracula's literary origins, I suggest you watch Ted-ED's videos about the subject matter such as this one or this one.

Very much like Stoker, ACD didn't just conceive Holmes on his own. He took his own inspirations from what he had available at the time.

As we all know, ACD's biggest inspiration for Sherlock Holmes was one of his teachers at the Edinburgh University, Joseph Bell. He was famous for his powers of deduction, and he was also interested in forensic science — both characteristics which Holmes is greatly known for. He also drew inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe's sleuth, C. Auguste Dupin ('The Purloined Letter' & 'Murders in Rue Morgue'). As ACD himself has said at the 1909 Poe Centennial Dinner: "Where was the detective story until Poe breathed life into it?" Some other writers he took after are Wilkie Collins, Émile Gaboriau, and Oscar Wilde.

Now, what does this say about us Sherlockians/Holmesians (depending if you're the coloniser or the one that was colonised)? Basically, ACD laid the groundwork for us with Sherlock Holmes: his humble abode 221B that he shares with his flatmate Dr. John Watson, his adventures, memoirs, return, casebook, last vow, and all that. Now that we have this material at hand, we can now make our own versions, takes, or even original stories featuring the characters of the Canon. Our inspiration comes from ACD's Sherlock Holmes, and we now get the chance to make our very own stories/conspiracy theories about them.

As I have mentioned earlier, Sherlock Holmes is the most adapted literary character in history. He has been adapted in over 200 films, more than 750 radio adaptations, a ballet, 2 musicals; and he's become a mouse, a woman, a dog, even a bloody cucumber. On top of all that are numerous pastiches and fanfics, and finally, we have arrived at the main topic of our post!

Fanfiction and pastiche are often confused together since they have three common elements: they take after the original work, they usually use the characters in that original work, and more often than not do are they set in that same time frame/period or not long after that. The common misconception is that pastiche are printed fanfiction, which is only partly true. While pastiche is definitely fanfiction in some ways and vice versa, there are fanfictions out there that aren't necessarily classified as pastiche that have been published.

Let's get on with our definition of terms to clear up the confusion a little more. Pastiche, according to Literary Terms, is:

. . . a creative work that imitates another author or genre. It’s a way of paying respect, or honor, to great works of the past. Pastiche differs from parody in that pastiche isn’t making fun of the works it imitates – however, the tone of pastiche is often humorous.

A good example of a pastiche is Sophie Hannah's 'The Monogram Murders', which is her take from Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot.

Although this was a commission from Christie's estate, it's still considered as a pastiche as:

It's takes after Christie's writing style;

It is set in the early years of Poirot's career (1929), which is still within the time frame that the author wrote him in;

It features Poirot and;

It pays respect to Christie in a sense that it stays true to her (Christie) characters and way of storytelling.

Meanwhile, our good and slightly unreliable friend Wikipedia defines fanfiction as:

. . . is fictional writing written by fans, commonly of an existing work of fiction. The author uses copyrighted characters, settings, or other intellectual property from the original creator(s) as a basis for their writing. [It] ranges from a couple of sentences to an entire novel, and fans can both keep the creator's characters and settings and/or add their own. [ . . . ] [It] can be based on any fictional (and sometimes non-fictional) subject. Common bases for fanfiction include novels, movies, bands, and video games.

To avoid any copyright infringement issues if I ever use a popular fanfic in the fandom, we'll use my (unfinished and unpopular) Sherlock Wattpad fic, 'Play Pretend'. You can read it here.

Why is it considered a fanfiction and not a pastiche?

It takes after an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (BBC Sherlock) which is a TV show, not the ACD canon itself;

The author (in this case myself) uses her own writing style and does not take after the original story's style;

Although it is set well in modern-day London and after Season 4, it also features scenes decades before the actual fanfic is set and outside of London;

I added a considerable number of characters, i.e. siblings to canon characters;

I had my own take some of the canon characters' personality especially after the events of Sherrinford;

It is written by a fan – myself. It is a work of fan labour and;

It is only a work of fanon, and isn't likely going to be considered by the show as its writing style is different from the actual show.

To put it simply, you can have more freedom in a fanfiction as it does not necessarily restrict you to follow or take after the original stories. Alternate universes (AUs) such as Unilock and Teenlock are perfect examples of this thing.

So can a pastiche be classified as fanfiction? Yes.

Can a fanfiction be classified as pastiche? Not all the time.

What's the difference? While yes, they share the basics, pastiche is technically leans more onto the original work's fundamental elements whereas fanfiction is a broader range of works inspired by the original work but doesn't necessarily follow all or any of its fundamental elements.

In order for us to understand it more, I'll give another example.

Most of you are familiar with these 21st-century adaptations of Holmes: the 2020 adaptation of Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes books and BBC Sherlock, which needs no further explanation – but for those who don't know, it's basically Holmes and the gang if they were alive today. I specifically chose these two as they are the ones that I believe would get my points across best. Though both are considered as wonderful pastiches with a well-rounded cast and awesome visuals, if we break them down bit by bit, we'll see which one is more of a pastiche and which one is more of a fanfic. (Yes, I know they're both screen adaptations. However, as Enola Holmes was based on the books and BBC Sherlock's fanfiction has the show's scenes written out in most fanfics, hear me out.)

They share these characteristics of a pastiche:

They feature characters from the Canon (Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, and Lestrade);

They have additional characters added by the writers (Including but not limited to Molly Hooper, Eurus Holmes, and Philip Anderson for BBC Sherlock while Enola Holmes has Lord Tewkesbury, Eudoria Holmes, and Enola herself) and;

They pay respect to the original Canon as their stories are based on the cases (BBC Sherlock) or simply what was going on around them (Enola Holmes).

They also share these characteristics of a fanfic:

They are made by enthusiasts of Sherlock Holmes (Moffat has called himself and Mark Gatiss 'Sherlock Holmes geeks', while Nancy Springer's Enola Holmes books are not just one or two but six);

They follow a common trope (we'll discuss these tropes in the following episodes) that goes on in the fandom (Sherlock's Sister & Modern AU)

They are based on a fictional subject (Sherlock Holmes);

They used characters and story elements that are copyrighted by the author/author's estate (fun fact: prior to the production of Enola Holmes, the Conan Doyle Estate filed a lawsuit against Springer & Netflix over Sherlock's emotions since he was more 'sympathetic' than he was portrayed in the Canon – this was later dismissed by both parties) and;

Their writing styles don't necessarily follow ACD's.

Despite these similarities, there are very obvious differences between the two that separates them from being a pastiche and a fanfiction.

Enola Holmes embodies pastiche more as it doesn't stray far away from the original elements of the Canon. It's still set in Victorian England. While Springer added characters of her own and definitely twisted the Canon to suit her series, she didn't necessarily place them out of the social construct that was going on around the characters. It follows ACD's writing style more as Enola Holmes' setting still remains within the Canon's original setting.

Meanwhile, we can safely say that BBC Sherlock is a work of fanfiction. While it did give us The Abominable Bride, the main series focused on Holmes and Watson in 21st-century England, which is drastically different from Victorian England. There are phones, black cabs, and cellphones — things which ACD Sherlock Holmes doesn't have. It also diverted from the Canon in the characters themselves, which is mostly seen in the names: Henry Baskerville became Henry Knight, Charles Augustus Milverton became Charles Augustus Magnussen, the H in Dr Watson's name stood for Hamish and Sherlock's full name is actually William Sherlock Scott Holmes. They also changed the personalities of some Canon characters: Mary was actually an ex-assassin, Mrs Hudson was an exotic dancer who drove a kick-ass sports car, Irene Adler is a dominatrix, to name a few. Moffat and Gatiss created a world of their own featuring the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which is really what most of us fanfic writers do with Mofftiss' rendition of Holmes.

In conclusion: while pastiche and fanfiction could have been the same thing, they're actually not. There's more to them that just printed fanfiction or pastiche e-books, and we all should take some time to see and observe them in a closer perspective.

And that's it for our first episode! I hope you enjoyed it. It was a lot fun for me to write this, especially now that I'm only starting. I would also like to note that while intensive research has been done on this series, some parts of this comes from my own observation and opinion, which may vary from yours. I am very much open to criticism, as long as it is said in a polite and civil manner. I'm still young, and to be educated as I go is something that could really help me with this series.

New fic coming soon

Today a year ago I posted (what l consider) my first fic "The Posh Purple Pirate (Enter My Life and Make Me Drown)" on Ao3; which also marks the beginning of my life among fanfic writers.

Because writing makes me insanely happy, got me new friends in this fandom, gifted me with a soul-mate 💜 and therefore made my life better I thought that was reason enough to celebrate.

The best way to celebrate writing is… well… writing, so I treated myself to this totally self-indulgent multi-chapter fic and bestowed my pirate and his captain a continuation of their story. So, here I can present you:

"The Purple Pirate: uncovered"

summary:

A case has come up that has Sherlock returning to his persona as The Posh Purple Pirate. Even being in an established relationship his pirate (and Sherlock in general) never lost his rather enticing effect on John. Helping Sherlock transform from brilliant Detective to mesmerising Miss Pirate leaves John hot and bothered, as does the case and seeing his pirate back on stage. The case doesn't go according to plan as John's presence isn't welcome and Miss Pirate attracts more attention than John is comfortable with. Luckily, Captain Watson is always in the wings, ready to save the day and the love of his life. Even though his heroic deed isn't received as well as expected, to both their relief differences are resolved pretty quickly and quite enthusiastically…

The boys are crossing universes with my "Hairy Situations at 221b"-series, which will hopefully satisfy some headcanons of especially @barbsiebabe . I hope @totallysilvergirl 's wish for more in the PirateDragQueenVerse is met sufficiently as well.

As always I can't even remotely adequately express my love and gratitude for my betas and dear friends @jobooksncoffee and @shylockgnomes , who are dealing stoically with my roving mind and spontaneous ideas. Thank you both so much for your unfaltering patience and constant support.

My Five Faves of my work...

Starting with the fic that was first posted to AO3!

My Craquelure series starts with To Capture Light.

The watercolor painting on his studio table mimics the sunset: stains of color running into one another, edges blurring and lines saturating around coin-sized pools of wet pigment. He watches as the gleam of color dulls into a dry matte, and he thinks of how his own life is doing the same. A drying out of the steadfast and glorious career of Mycroft Holmes, his covert accomplishments disintegrating into the bones of an archaeological dig that no one will ever even think to fund.

Mycroft Holmes has sequestered himself in a desolate part of the world as he struggles with the consequences of the events at Sherrinford. He is confronted with the unexpected when a visitor appears on his doorstep.

The Tenth Muse

Mycroft sees things other people can’t. Lights, spectres, shades, demons, phantasms, and creatures that no one else can see. Voices no one else can hear. Colours eddying around people’s bodies, visible only to his eyes.

It isn't deduction for Mycroft; it's a living nightmare that leads to self-imposed isolation. When Sherlock "dies," Mycroft finds himself reaching out for a golden slice of happiness, just one person to call his own in a landscape of horrors.

Haunted

Plagued by the past, John moves himself and his daughter to a new flat for a fresh start - and it's not 221B Baker Street.

While he grapples with new knowledge and old guilt, he's confronted with odd neighbors and strange noises in the night. But is it the new flat, or is John Watson losing his grip on reality?

Hand Me Your Armour

Greg Lestrade has been carrying a torch for Mycroft Holmes for years. Between cases and the petty dramas of life, he can mostly keep it at bay, flickering on a low burn in the back of his mind.

However, after he's pulled into a search and rescue operation for the man, he finds himself thrust into an unexpected role. He's trying to be respectful - and careful - but Mycroft Holmes is a force to be reckoned with, and the torch is burning brighter than ever.

Written In Skin

It’s a lot like leafing through pages in a large picture book, or watching life being lived on the other side of a window. The glass is clear, but still a barrier. Objects are out of reach, though the acts that unfold can tug at your heart or spark a forest fire of rage. Or encourage a person to engender a certain numbness of feeling.

Mycroft Holmes lives a quiet, steady life. He works. He paints. He takes walks. It’s what he does to ignore the flurry of partnering around him. i would like to ask you a question... i feel a bit dumb asking this but... what are the different types of fanfics? like- i know what fluff, angst and smut is. and i know what's an AU, and more or less the concept of omegaverse (i think...)

but when is a ficlet a ficlet? or a oneshot a oneshot? what is a 221b? a drabble? idk if there are more but i guess i just don't really understand the differences between the lengths of them? does this make sense..?

i've been confused about this for a while and can't quite figure it out. if you'd help out i'd very much appreciate it!

Before I answer your question, I highly recommend you peruse the Fanlore Wiki; it's a good place for new people to learn about fandom terms and history, so check it out if you need further clarification, as my answers are based on my understanding of each of the things you're asking about from being in TOO many fandoms for TOO many years, LOL.

I'm not going to go into everything, since fandom is SO huge and there's so much about it that I can't cover it all, hence the link to Fanlore, so here are immediate answers to some of your questions:

Drabble: A fic that's exactly 100 words

A 221b Ficlet: A fanfiction exclusive to the multiple variants of Holmesian fandoms that's exactly 221 words long, and the VERY last word of the fic starts with "b".

Ficlet: A short story, usually under 1,000 words but can be a little more.

Oneshot / vignette: A short, single chapter "scene" fic, essentially a story covering a missing scene or an out-of-context situation. In a similar vein, there's Two-Shots, which is basically a oneshot but from two different perspectives (ie. First chapter is situation from character A's POV, and Chapter 2 is from Character B's situation).

Podfic: An audiobook of a fanfiction. If you prefer to listen to stories, rather than read them, there are a tonne of amazing podficcers recording stories in multiple fandoms.

Five and One (and variations of): A story that depicts "Five times that Character [verb] [insert situation here] and one time [insert contradicting situation here]". It's basically 6 one-shots in a single story that has the last "one time" situation be a feel-good FINALLY ending. Some authors split them up into single chapters per situation, and others write the whole story as a single chapter.

Meta / Metafic: An essay or story based on analysing a piece of media. The Fic version expands upon a theory within a given fandom so that the theory fits into the narrative of the show.

WIP: Acronym for "Work In Progress", which is an unfinished published story. Some authors "write as they post" while others finish multiple chapters prior to posting them, but only post chapters one at a time on a scheduled basis, which keeps people coming back to the story until the end. The latter USUALLY guarantees a full-story inevitably being posted, so it is the more preferred type of WIP.

Short Story: a story under about 10,000 words

Novella: a story between 20 and 50K words

Novel: Anything over 50K words. I think past a certain number (100K?) it becomes an Epic, but I'm not 100 on it. Google says it's a story that spans multiple "books" and time periods, so I'm not sure.
