Books of 2025: ADRIFT IN CURRENTS CLEAN AND CLEAR by Seanan McGuire.

Ah, yes, my favorite January tradition: heartbreak in tiny series installment form :)

This one is about a turtle-obsessed disabled Russian girl who gets adopted by an American family and fitted for a prosthetic she doesn't ask for, want, or need, and then she splashes through her Door.

I love Russian language and culture things (shout out to accidentally double minoring in college), so I was excited for a Russian protag and a Russian-coded Door world! Excellent enrichment in my enclosure. Neat cultural expansion on the Wayward Children universe (multiverse? cosmos?? insert appropriately scaled setting word here).

I also liked the aquatic nature of Belyyreka--terrifying giant frogs and delightful giant turtles and delightful talking foxes on the riverbanks were all lovely, and the worldbuilding about different weights of water was neat! Very mind-bendy kind of setting, I dig it.

This installment felt very slim (146 pages in my copy), and Our World Heavy--the first 46 pages were in Colorado, and the last 100 were in Belyyreka, but it felt like we did More Frequent and Larger Time Skips in Belyyreka compared to Earth? Kind of speedrun mode, sans Quests, really (this one was a lot more oriented toward Finding/Building Your Family, which was signposted pretty clearly upon our arrival in Belyyreka). Mostly a quieter installment up until the, y'know, Typical Impending Tragedy of Return at the end. (Did I almost put it down at 1AM last night with 30 pages left so everyone could Be Happy? perHAPS,)

Overall: I had a good time! But, ow, my heart (once again and forever).

I've been watching tons of videos of speeches from serial killers, cult leaders, (confirmed) psychopaths etc today and Tobias does plenty of the subtle things they do, from tone and phrasing to body language. It makes it x100 scarier for me to then look at how Tobias has made every single person he's come across like him to some degree or another, sometimes simply by existing and other times by tailoring his manipulation strategies to their psyche

the DVD (courtesy of my local library) was scratched and would Not let me play or rip that episode no matter what I tried. suorry </3 the way I see the archive is that you should ideally watch on there up to season 5 (those are the highest quality lossless rips available online that I'm aware of if you're downloading the .mkv files), and then Find Another Way to watch the HD seasons. I only intended to rip/upload the later seasons for the commentaries, and the rest of the episodes are more like a bonus. I wasn't too concerned about the rest of the episodes being missing because 8x07 doesn't have a commentary track and there were no official releases or extras past S10 (and I believe no commentary past S9). I have S6 + S8 on bluray, but I wasn't able to rip anything but extras with my janky setup (modded ps3) due to some limitations with hard drive size and having to split the .iso files or I would upload bluray rips as well, and then it'd be a proper complete archive up to S8 (and I would actually like to make this a Complete archive, since so many people are aware of and relying on it now, it's expanded to be more than what I'd originally intended for it to be). I've been meaning to pick up sunny christmas, and I'll keep an eye out for another copy of S8. It's always going to be an ongoing project, it's just difficult to justify buying a bluray drive capable of ripping discs when I'm only going to use it three times for 6/7/8.

Books of 2025: MINIMIZING MARRIAGE by Elizabeth Brake.

As part of my quest to read aro-adjacent nonfiction, I put in an inter-library loan request for this many moons ago. It's due back today, so naturally I finished it this morning at 12:04AM technically, we'll count that as a win.

The whole book was much more readable than expected, given that its header declares it STUDIES IN FEMINIST PHILOSOPHY--the prose was fine, actually! I don't have the background to speak to the philosophical or feminist framing of her arguments, but her main proposition is that reworking the institution of marriage to one of "minimal marriage" would be good for everyone. She defines minimal marriage as "a legal framework that avoids amatonormativity, supporting caring relationships including 'traditional,' polygamous, and same-sex marriages as well as 'Boston marriages,' friendships, and urban tribes." Basically: take the good parts of marriage (contractual agreements/protections, the social indicator of This Relationship Is Important To Me, forcing state/governmental recognition of chosen relationships, etc.), but divorce (ahaha) them from One Central Sexual/Amorous Relationship (and also from childrearing, because that could be a separate thing) and allow those benefits to be divvied out to an individual's network of care as they see fit. It was interesting!

Now, I didn't actually read this for the marriage angle, I read it for the amatonormativity pieces, so I blitzed through most of the book. Chapter 4, "Special Treatment for Lovers: Marriage, Care, and Amatonormativity," was where I spent most time and took the most notes. (For context: I took 4.5 pages of notes total, and 1.5 of those were on chapter 4.) I probably could've read just that chapter, honestly, and gotten what I wanted from this book--the focus on amatonormativity in this chapter was validating and coherent and well-articulated, which I appreciated as An Aro™ swimming in its mire. Example, from page 89:

Amatonormativity prompts the sacrifice of other relationships to romantic love and marriage and relegates friendship and solitudinousness to cultural invisibility.

Which!! Yeah!! That's it, baby!!!!

Anyway. Glad I finally got my hands on a copy of this, glad to have read it and to absolutely not have saved the relevant pages in digital format, because holy shit is it hard to find physically. A lot to chew on, but not as much as I feared from 206 pages of Philosophy; much more approachable than anticipated, if this is a thing you're interested in, too!
