Weekly Reading Update (06/17/24)
Tumblr media
Reviews and thoughts under the cut
The Dark Secret by Tui T. Sutherland (8/10)
The fourth book of this series marks a major turning point, mainly because of a reveal at the end, and the rest of the story is quite good. I think although Starflight is not my favorite of the five dragonets overall, he is probably the one most similar to me, and I can understand his decisions well. I did rate this one just a little lower because Starflight is pretty isolated for the majority of this book. It's necessary for his character development, putting him in a situation where he can't just fall back on his friends, but I definitely missed the dragonets' dynamic in this one.
The Brightest Night by Tui T. Sutherland (9/10)
I think this was a pretty good end to this arc of the series. There were some things that I wish had been built up more with foreshadowing in previous books, but Sutherland did a good job creating a conclusion that is both satisfying and adheres to the worldbuilding and characters she's crafted. It's great to get Sunny's perspective in this installment and incredibly satisfying to see her take charge and prove that pacifism and optimism don't mean she's weak or naive. Also, one thing I really appreciated about The Brightest Night was how it handled Starflight and Sunny's relationship. Not only does it show how to respectfully reject romantic feelings and accept that rejection, but I'm also of the opinion that the main five are far too much like siblings for any romantic relationships.
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by Mark Twain (5/10)
This may sound deranged, but this book has all the tropes, archetypes, and hallmarks of a male power fantasy isekai. For those who don't know, isekai is a Japanese genre, usually appearing in anime, manga, and light novels, where the main character is transported to another world or back in time. A fairly basic premise, but there are certain distinguishing aspects of the genre, such as a main character far more powerful than they have any right to be, using knowledge of the modern world to change/rule the new one, and some sort of knowledge of the future. Isekai is inspired by portal fantasies, which A Connecticut Yankee is a prominent example of, but the similarities between the story of Hank Morgan and those generic dudes who get hit by a truck and become the most powerful being to ever exist are just so glaring to me. Aside from this, there were some genuienely funny moments in this book--it is satire, after all--but overall it just got a little boring and I could not care less about Hank.
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus (4/10)
I have to say, despite my rocky past with historical fiction, I'm disappointed. This book was honestly pretty bad, despite the constant praise it receives. It is hailed as a feminist masterpiece and yet contains only the most basic, surface-level white feminism. The scientific aspects are not just annoying and unrealistic but obviously poorly researched, and the way religion is treated in this novel speaks of narrow-mindedness and an unwillingness to look closely at the issue. The story itself lacks tension of any kind because the main character is so obviously right and perfect all the time and all her opponents are so plainly bigoted and idiotic. This wasn't a complete disaster; it utilizes a writing style I enjoy and I can definitely see the appeal of it as a wish-fulfillment fantasy, but overall it's just a mess and mostly just infuriated me.
Haikyuu!! Vol. 36-40 by Haruichi Furudate (9/10, 8/10, 9/10, 7/10, 8/10)
I feel like I'm burning through this series, but it's probably just because manga is so quick and easy to read. I am an ardent lover of the story behind Haikyuu!!, and I think the two volumes I gave 9s to are great examples of why. Volume 36 is probably my favorite of the volumes focused on the Nekoma match, and I love the way it portrays the relationship between both Hinata and Kenma and their two schools. (While I rated Volume 37 lower overall, I did cry at the Ukai/Nekomata handshake.) These interactions speak to how the characters have so much respect and admiration for each other, even if they are rivals, and Karasuno holds that respect for pretty much every opponent they face. Volume 38 is focused on a Fukurodani match, not the main characters, and despite it being technically a story on the side, the characters are given so much depth and attention. I think Haikyuu!! is so engaging to me and generally well-loved because of moments like these where each character is given a story, a moment, and the depth they deserve.
Wild Seed by Octavia E. Butler (55%)
So far I find this book quite interesting, and I'm also just excited to be reading my first Octavia E. Butler novel. There are a lot of compelling connections to various societal issues in Anyanwu and Doro's relationship, and I think the decision of how to set them up, particularly Anyanwu as an African woman during the height of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, brings much more depth to these topics. It's definitely tough to read, dealing with, obviously, slavery, but also eugenics, suicide, and abuse, but Butler is handling it all quite well and in a rather subtle manner that carefully contains the story to this one relationship while still making clear commentary on the world at large. I wonder how everything will resolve, since the characters seem to be in a bit of a stalemate right now.

SO IMMA MAKE ALL YOU FOOLS EMOTIONAL OVER SOME VOLLEYBALL BOYS.
a i g h t. LISTEN UP BITCHES.
I was messaging the brilliant @aeriamamaduck about SunoOsa smut of all things (that blue bird app is a wonderful place lol), and I got to thinking about just why Haikyuu has had me in a a DEATH GRIP now at this point in my life, as opposed to the other two times I tried (and failed) to watch it.
This train of thought does indeed relate to SunaOsa, but also to well… like… all of the Haikyuu ships(???) and just the timeskip arc in general, SO HEAR ME OUT.
I think part of the reason why the time skip arc might genuinely be my favorite part of the whole series is "it doesn’t stop before the real world hits." What do I mean by that? Well lemme tell ya.
Like I LOVE Free! Holy hell I love that show, DO NOT get me wrong. But it feels like with Free! (ESPECIALLY in the later seasons and with the final two movies) there is a "suspension of the real world"; like a magical plot armor is keeping these characters together both in physical distance proximity and in the relationships they have to one another.
Haikyuu by contrast? There is a whole volume where Hinata is depressed out of his mind because he’s on the other side of the planet from everyone he knows and loves and WE HAVE TO LIVE THOSE CONSEQUENCES WITH HIM. We don't get a free pass. We don't get to go, "can we skip to the good part???" We don't get to whizz over the sadness and isolation. BECAUSE REAL LIFE, real adult life, DOESN'T LET YOU DO THAT EITHER.
On top of which, there is nothing magically keeping these characters together — sure there’s the Olympics and the exhibition matches that pull them together at a rare moment. And sure we get a "new clusters of main characters", drawn out of character groups we've seen before (MSBY, the Adlers, and EJP for example), and this serves as a good reflection of real life where old friends come and go, and circle back into your life as your situation changes. But those moments are RARE and fleeting.
You’ve got 70 or so characters whose lives are moving in 70 different directions and Furudate turns to us, his readers, and says "THATS OKAY. THATS LIFE."
Taking this even one step further, when you see this ethos translated into ships and fanfic, it starts to make perfect sense why I love this series at this point in my life. The fanfic from this series that looks at the years in time skip arcs has break-ups, arguments, and pain that feels genuine and real. 'can you stay' (KuroKen) and 'Flame' (SunaOsa) both shattered my heart less than a week ago (12 outta 10 to both; highly recommend) for those exact reasons.
The series has it's undeniably peaks and triumphs, but these characters have to fight for them, earn them, and get the PROVERBIAL SHIT KICKED OUT OF THEM to do it.
Furudate and Haikyuu promise us no “neat happy endings” because life doesn’t promise you that. And for someone mourning the death of a relationship killed by distance, and growth, and people changing, and JUST LIFE… this show means a lot to me.
Idk if this is even entirely coherent, but the fact that our characters not only grow up and grow apart in this series, but we are allowed to see that??? NAY, forced to see it, and know it is a fact of life...?
To my fragile twenty-four year old, freshly-broken heart, this series is like lancing a wound. MY GOD does it hurt, but GOOD GOD does it help you heal.
TL;DR: The Haikyuu Timeskip is amazing and awful and I love it with every bit of my soul.
thanks for coming to my tedtalk xxx

I feel like to a certain extent I also had that toxic phase of calling people a poser lol and people calling me a poser as well :p in the end we like what we like and fuck people who try and make us feel bad about those things <3
I LOVE R/JUJUTSUSHI!!!! its the best place for spoilers 🥰 jk jk. I could go on an ugly rant it as well. Imagine someone cringe bc they find someone attractive and consume the media around them??? I hate people's logic sometimes; lemme enjoy hot anime 2d men/women fuck off :D
LMFAO I think thats the only downside of talking with strangers about theories and such I think?? sometimes they don't understand or aren't open minded about other povs (and the latter is fine, you don't have to accept something that you dislike but pls don't be mean about it you're gonna hurt my feelings)
I hold haikyuu people to grown up standards but they're literally in 1st year of hs tf TT lets be best friends! I'll be the Yamaguchi to your Tsukishima <3 but fr, I don't know if you've reached this point but the episode where Tsukki's backstory was revealed...I feel nothing but pain. I can also relate to him as well tbh; I like how Haikyuu characters are, as far as I know, very humanly fleshed out!
Ohhhh I love cotton candy! It's been a while since I've eaten it tho :,) ill add it to my watch list! lately ive kinda been fixing my life/schedule so I hope I can start reading csm and jjk and watch more anime!
I...I was watching, you know...I was watching pørñ TT
YOU JUST MADE ME REMEMBER!!! I WANTED TO TELL YOU BUT IT SLIPPED MY MIND ANYWAY WE GOT A RELEASE DATE!!!!!! THE MOVIE IS GONNA BE RELEASED THE 24TH OF MARCH allegedly and I say allegedly bc even though news channels have made comments about the release date, cinemas over haven't said anything?? but ig lets just hope for the best TT my cousin wanted to go to the movies wearing outfits inspired by Gojo and Nanami and it would be fun so imma just hope for the best :,)
I would also watch the shaky version. no doubt, no hesitation. A bookstore over here was selling jjk volume 8 at a discount price and I really wanted to buy it but my dad wouldn't let me TT I need to get a job fr
EYYYY CSM PROPAGANDA >:) I think its more of a Latin American Spanish thing tbh BUT LETS GO
Yuzuru is an ethereal being. There's just so much about him that blows me away I cant- and all his skating outfits :,D I keep thinking about skating aus since the olympics; they're plaguing my mind
#mappareanimateeverythingpleaseimbeggingyou2k22
I think one of my friends told me that mappa kinda exploited their workers but I wouldn't be 100% sure; I didn't fact check. I also don't know if im using the ; correctly bc I don't English very well as of lately lmfao.
I don't know where I stand with cosplays, I like the ones that aren't a carbon copy of the characters but outfits inspired by them and such. I think those are very neat!
I hope you had a nice weekend!! <3
-🥳 anon
right lmao it's also those same guys that drool over rem and shit too
i don't think i've seen his backstory yet. i DO know that his brother is voiced by geto's va tho 👀 i should really finish it
you were watching PORN in your FAMILY CAR??? you're a menace to society and i don't know if i respect you or hate you for that (jk jk.... unless)
i saw 18th of march but it was for usa :') it's nowhere close to where i am lol i might watch the crappy drive versions. for now, i will be hyped for the batman
AAH ARE YOU KIDDING ME? IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR VOL8 AND 9 FOR AGES BUT THEYRE BOTH SOLD OUT! they are not translated which means they are so fucking expensive but i was ready to pay for it.... anyways i bought vol 0 and 1 for very cheap, i need to just wait for them to get translated :') they're only at vol 2 but damn i can wait to see getos fat titties and toji traumatizing gojo
mappa most likely does exploit their workers. i did hear tho that they are paid well, better than most other animators, so baby steps ig
lol i don't really look for punctuation either, it's impossible to learn lol so PSA if i ever have weird punctuation, it's cause i do it the way i do in turkish lol
i agree! most cosplays don't work out well for that reason :( hakken is a god tho
have a good one!

✨Haikyuu boys as your brother series✨
You had your second date and your brother figured it out. How will they react?
A/N: Chapter 2 of my "Reacting on your blind date". Warning many errors cuz i'm still learning. Check out the first part of this in my masterlist.
Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You would come up to him while he's trying to cover up his face with a menu
"Nii-san"
"...."
"Tooru nii-san"
"..."
"Tooru nii-san"
"YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO CALL ME THAT TOBIO!!"
You would ask him to leave so you can continue your date BUT BOI AS IF TOORU OIKAWA WOULD LET U DO THAT. He will in the most over dramatic voice with a British accent.
"My! y/n! I didn't expect to see you here what a surprise! i was planning to have my lunch but i didn't know that you and this..... Cheap looking man is also having a lunch here!"
Believe me he would say that max volume, he was attracting a lot of customer and since this bitch is used to attention cause duh he's oikawa he didn't even feel a pinch of embarrassment.
While on the other hand you and kagayema is so embarrassed you wanted to say you didn't know this man this man is crazy.
"I see that you're already done with your lunch date so let's go home y/n darling"
"Ha?"
"Come on now"
"Wha--wait! What about kage--argh nii-san! Stop pulling me!"
You were dragged yes, HE.WILL.DRAG.YOU and he will strut his way out feeling victorious.
While you were dragged kageyama will be there not surprised ofc he's expecting oikawa would do that, so basically he's just waving at you with a side smile.
Feeling dejected because your flat ass brother just ruined your date you received a text from kageyama.
Kageyama
It looks like our date was cut off huh? If your ok with it i would like to continue our date, we don't have practice tomorrow so maybe i could go get you after school? There's gonna be a opening of a new sweet shop we could go check it out. What do you say?
Maybe this date wasn't a fail after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would probably come walking towards you two with a sinister aura surrounding him.
But oikawa being a bitch he would prolly carry you bridal style and starts running away.
"Let's runaway y/n-chan"
"Huh?"
"SHITTYKAWA COME BACK HERE WITH MY SISTER"
You're scared for oikawa's life cause you wouldn't know what will happen if he caught you two.
Punch him? Like maybe two times? Murder him
As soon as the both of them are tired iwaizumi will take this chance to snatch you away from oikawa's arms.
"Iwa-chan didn't i told you it's rude to sta--"
SLAP, yes you read it right iwaizumi just slapped oikawa in front of you. Your reaction would probably be like.
"👁👄👁"
"Iwa-chan what was that for?"
"Try to do this again i'm gonna shove a volleyball in your throat"
"Yes sir iwaizumi sir!"
And after that there was no third date heck you didn't even had the chance to talk to oikawa cause iwaizumi would KILL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is what it is.
He would not really drag you tho he'll just come up to you two and look at you guys. Judging .
"Ara~ i never thought you're into this hinata"
"Geh! Tsukishima y-you wanna fight huh?"
"And out of all people you decide to choose my little sister"
"Sister?..........EHHHH LITTLE SISTER?!"
Let's just say hinata doesn't know that you and tsukishima are practically siblings even tho it's so obvious when you introduced yourself. Tsukishima y/n
"You're really stupid aren't you?"
"What did you say?!"
You can't help but look at hinata cause he's adorable bickering with your tall very tall brother. But you gotta stop this rn.
"Alright ok haha nii-san let's go home"
This fucker.
"No no let me see how hinata FLIRT"
Oh this fucker he really enjoys to torment people. He won't move an inch even if you push or pull him, he's pole, a salty steady fucking pole.
He would loveeeeee to see how hinata flirt with you so he can tease him more. But that doesn't mean he would let you two continue your date.
NOT IN A MILLION YEARS.
Seeing hinata at practice and at school is already enough for him but having hinata as your boyfriend?! He would rather be short than that.
It took awhile but you two got home safe not sound cause tsukishima keep on rambling how funny hinata is or how stupid he is or how dumb you are and he'll never let that happen cause he doesn't want hinata as your boyfriend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would march up to you two and would have a glaring contest with oikawa.
"Nee-san let's go"
"Ara tobio-chan as you can see we're not finished with our date YET"
"Well OIKAWA-SAN for your information i'm her little brother"
As much as you like to see tobio getting flustered and all and being super protective, you gotta stop these cause who knows what will happen.
But before you could stop them they started to bicker.
"I'm better than you in volleyball"
"Well i'm a better setter than you oikawa-san"
"Just being a setter but overall i'm better than you"
You really don't know what's going on it's like you're watching a kitten hissing at a cat as well a cat hissing back at the kitten.
You find it lowkey adorable.
It was hard but you manage to break the two and convinced tobio to go home already but before you do you patted oikawa's shoulder and said.
"Maybe next time, i'll text you when i'm free"
Boi that made oikawa happy and after that kageyama received a message from oikawa.
Oikawa
CAN'T BE STOPPED TOBIO-CHAN!୧( ಠ Д ಠ )୨

Hey!!! I hope this isn't weird but, What bands/singers do u like?? My music doesn't makes me exited anymore, which sucks! So im looking for new people to listen to! And i remember u putting a link of one of the new songs of all time low to your kiribaku art and i love that album also you are one of my fave artist so i thought i could ask u too! If u don't mind ofcourse!!! I hope this doesn't bother u! (I guess this is kind of useless info ahhhh i hope u don't mind!)
It’s absolutely not weird so don’t worry about it, but it’s!!!! sort of an hard question to answer because more or less anything that can fall under the very huge umbrella of the rock label is fair game for me haha the two bands I’ve been calling my favorite for longer right now are Alter Bridge and Tremonti, lately I’ve been really into Nothing More, I have a super weak spot for Halestorm too right now - I like most post-hardcore, but Pierce The Veil and Bring Me The Horizon are my faves? But, well, all this stuff is really different compared to All Time Low… since you liked them you could try Tonight Alive or One OK Rock! You Me At Six work too I think, and… Andy Black’s solo album was more pop-ish but on the same genre too, so try that one maybe! Oh and Young Guns!!!! I love Young Guns how could I forget them, they’re in this type of punk too!
Sorry, this isn’t exactly just my faves haha I love music too much, it’s hard to pick a limited number of artists for me rip
Anon said:HIIIIIII!! First of all, i love you and your art. Now, where is the bokuroo???? :C please draw some bokuroo, i miss those two! Maybe some fluffly? But also kiribaku is good, i started shipping those two thanks to you! And sorry for my bad english. Bye bye!!
Hi! Thanks for liking my stuff!!! And I’ve talked about why I’m not drawing much Haikyuu lately right here but to make it easy because of some reasons inspiration is really low in that fandom for me right now so!!! I’ll have to ask you to be patient with the lack of content that might not be changing until Bo and Kuro start being relevant in the manga again
Anon said:Fran… it’s not bc the heat is killing YOU that you have to kill US, what’s with all the beef suddenly. seriously. > : C (jk thank you for it hhh)
LMAO is this about Deku it feels like this is about Deku hahaha
Anon said:I feel like your art style has changed a bit over the few months, all in good way tho! The characters’ dimensions seem to be more dynamic, little things like hands and limbs in general feel very natural. Your Bakugou and Kirishima are both very consistent too and have a nice design to them!
This is my favorite ask ever, I’ve read it fifty times and I’ll probably read it more in the future thank you so much??? I’ve actually been feeling like my style has gotten all over the place lately so knowing you find it consistent and natural means so much to me ;A; you really did make my day, thank you!!!
Anon said:Story challenge! Take your favorite otp’s/ot3’s and give one of them cancer
*sweeps angst under the closest carpet* anon this is weird for some reason I can’t seem to be able to read your ask
Anon said:I swear to the gods Your art is too pure You are responsible for 2/5ths of my bnha pix folder. I loooooooooooooooovvvvveeeeee bakukamikiri now because of yooou *crys because my art isn’t as good*
SOB thank you so much oh my god!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anon said:This episode was so intense wow. Can I just say that I absolutely adore Todoroki. This boy deserves so much love
I KNOW RIGHT he’s such a good boy such a pure nerd such a strong sprout I love him so much I’m so so so glad he’s healing !!!!!
Anon said:Hello, can I marry your art? Especially Bakugou with undercut, he stole my heart *^* and holly fuck, you have a big plus from me for knowing “Shark Boy and Lava Girl”. Before I found it, I thought I can’t love you more. How foolish of me. (And you drew my smol yellow husbando from Haikyuu, god bless you my dear)
I don’t know who the yellow husband is exactly but I’m!!!!!!!!!!!! super glad you like my stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much holy smokes!!!!!! *O*
Anon said:I had to babysit earlier and the kids were watching lab rats. The line “They’re a boy band I’ve been working on, and the twist is, one of them’s a girl” gave me the biggest bakusquad vibes I’m crying
I’ve been laughing at this ask for seventy-five years you don’t understand hahahaha it’s so accurate p l e a s e best description of the sqaud I’ve ever read lmao
Anon said:I LOVE ALL OF YOUR ART IT’S SO COMFORTING AND CALM AND SMOOTH im crying
THANK YOU OH MY G ODS AAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Anon said:I love the way you draw Denki’s hair. I feel like over time, Hori has gradually made the spiky back pieces blend more with the length of the back of his hair, but I personally love it where it looks more like cowlick-y (… I guess I’m making that a word) and messy like how it always looked in the beginning and how you draw it. Why is this boy so unbearably cute?
Ahhhhhh thanksss!!!!!!! I’m glad you like how I draw him cause honestly Horikoshi has no clue what he’s doing while drawing him so actually finding a way to draw his hair that worked was hard - Hori sort of… does whatever! I’ve re-read the first volume lately and Denki didn’t even use to have hair long enough to tie??? He looked so funny, really haha I’m sorta tempted to draw him like that…

Can i ask... Why 4 of 7 authors don't have any kiyoyachi works...? I thought you guys wanted people who wrote kiyoyachi stories... I'll still buy the zine because i love the girls but i'm kind of dissapointed
Truth be told, while sorting through the applications, we wondered why so many of the writers (pretty much the majority) didn’t have kiyoyachi fics, and then realised that we said a bit differently on the application form where the minimum requirement was to have Haikyuu!! fics. Kiyoyachi was preferrable, yes, but the bare minimum was a Haikyuu!! fic. The form was made very early on where we (read: I) had no idea if we could even get enough people together, and then everything blew up and we got more apps than we expected, so we adjusted and didn’t think that we had said otherwise in the form.By the time we noticed, obviously all applications were closed, the deed was done, we were exhausted from looking through the apps in such a short time (114 apps for two people is quite a work-load, mind me,) and it felt just as hypocritic to ignore half of the applications because they did as it was described in the application form, as it is how we ended up with our decision now.It is entirely our fault for not tripple-checking everything beforehand, the only thing we can pledge is that we’re only human, and at first I was organising everything alone while also having 4 uni projects breathing down my neck, not knowing what dimensions this would take, so this detail simply got lost. (Until we found out during the courating phase, obviously.)
However, I have to say that stylistic, these seven authors convinced us the most. They fit our criteria on how we want the zine to feel while reading it, they all work well with limited word counts with creative ideas, and those who don’t have kiyoyachi fics were - in our opinion - the best writers quality-vise, otherwise we wouldn’t have considered them, as we have, in fact, a lot of authors who didn’t have kiyoyachi fics. If we weren’t convinced that they will fit the zine and deliver quality work, they wouldn’t be there. We were harsh in our judgement, I was very harsh in my judgement on who we take and who not, so yeah, I stand by the quality of these authors.
There is no way to make it right, so we went with this. We apologise for our error and we totally understand your anger. This is our side to the story, take it or leave it, there will always be someone upset about it. We only can stand by our decision, and now we most definitely know better for the next time, should we happen to organise a zine again.
Again, apologies, and we’re sorry that this issue is dampening your excitement for the zine.
-Mod Inky
Thank you for your question! I understand your frustration. KiyoYachi is not one of those ships with endless content, by any stretch of the imagination. I treasure each and every fan out there making content for them. Any application that contained already-published KiyoYachi stuff was a joy for me to read for this reason. We’re starved for content out here in KiyoYachi world sometimes, and the creators who are consistently plugging away at adding more are very precious to my heart.
There were a number of factors that went into selecting participants for the zine, and I want to assure you that having existing content for KiyoYachi was definitely one of them. Some of the applications we received also contained works that have not been published yet, and I’m excited to see those hit the internet officially!
Given the volume and variety of submissions, there were many other factors what had to come into play as well–writing fluency, creativity and diversity of ideas, ability to work within the relatively short format the zine requires, grasp of characterisation… the list goes on and on. Choosing participants was a complicated process, and there was no way to boil it down to any single criterium. If I could have, I would have accepted participants based on their passion for the ship and the amount of heart they would put into their zine pieces, but there is no clear-cut way to measure things like passion and heart.
The good news is that the writers we selected have enough enthusiasm for KiyoYachi and for this project that they did apply! And think of it this way: some truly amazing writers who may be newcomers to the ship are going to be creating KiyoYachi works for this project now! This means new voices being added to the well of KiyoYachi content. I’m really excited to see what they will bring, and I hope you’ll understand us taking this chance on them. Who knows, maybe this project will be a stepping stone to more of their stories filling up the tags in the future!
