So often, I see people who treat certain bigotries as being almost... an unfortunate byproduct of the More Important Bigotry. I see it a lot with bigotries that people are broadly willing to put up with as long as there's a Bigger Picture, or if the bigotry in question is subtle.

Transphobia (for example) isn't an acceptable trade-off for combatting sexism. Often, people are willing to put up with or perpetrate the bigotry (transphobia, in this example) because they see it as an acceptable price to pay for what they actually want.

The thing about bigotry that makes it bad isn't just that different bigotries feed into each other - antisemitism feeds itself into transphobia, which feeds itself into sexism, which feeds itself in racism, and this goes on ad infinitum - it's that bigotry actively affects actual, real people's lives. It prevents people from living, from accessing autonomy, and ultimately deprives them of their human experience. I don't think you ought to see bigotry as a "price to be paid" so you can get yours.

A Little Rant About the Fathers of the ASL Brothers

people in this fandom are so mean about Roger and Dragon being "dead-beat" dads and I don't get it.

like I think it's pretty obvious that Dragon couldn't raise Luffy because he would have been in danger being around the World's Worst Criminal and all. and okay leaving him with Garp wasn't a great idea but saying Dragon is a dead-beat is kind of harsh in my opinion?? my point is that there's definitely a REASON why Dragon didn't stay with Luffy. do we know the whole reason and is it even a good reason? that remains to be seen but still. I see people say he needs a "redemption" from being a bad father and I'm like... no he doesn't

and what baffles me even more is people saying Roger was a dead-beat. like! the man died! "oh he abandoned Ace to a life of suffering" y'all say about a guy who died before Ace was even born. the man gets murdered while his wife is pregnant and everyone goes on about how he's a dead-beat dad. and I know he turned himself in to the Marines so he basically did cause his own death but he was dying from an illness anyway. I don't think he was ever going to live long enough to raise Ace, I think he still would have died soon from his illness even if he didn't turn himself in. and again, leaving him with Garp wasn't a great idea but I don't think Roger really had a choice and I don't think that makes him a "dead-beat"

i think the sketch looks silly and goofy and funny so i find it important to share with you the mere presence of the faces i drew on it. i drew it on top of the boxes without staying inside its borders because i find my proportions can get wonky if i draw them cropped in a restricted space. and I feel trapped otherwise and i will draw BAD!!! give me spaceeeee to go wild!!!!

the head circles are there for emotional support

very low res speedpaint because truth is the canvas was much bigger than the space where my comic was placed. i didnt account when exporting my timelapse in 720px that that tiny space would look so pixelated ... but it's able to be percieved, so its okay.

(i will now comment on my process and it is not brief sorry)

usually i would try to clean up my sketches and figure out what goes on top before jumping into linework, but since there are multiple panels and drawings i chose to jump into inking right away for the sake of brevity. i just went in with a brush that uses pen pressure and drew what was needed. i added extra line thickness and contrast in areas around the face because it helps direct your eyes there more easily that way.

according to her equipment rei has a chain belt but i only remembered it existed once I was going to color, and i did not like that discovery... I chose to ignore it to maintain my peace. i already have the color palettes for these characters figured out, and i didnt really want to think about a new element at the moment www I tend to overthink those things a lot so i skipped it

the rest is rather straightforward! not that anything else wasn't, but in here i could turn my brain off and sing. linework and sketching require mumbling so i cannot turn my brain off. just block in the characters with a solid color so i can have a mask (something along those lines,) where the color can stay inside. then just color in !!!

Base colors just had slight cell shading on the skin, and for the hair i airbrush a bit of the skincolor in low opacity near the forehead... I'm not sure what it means, but i can look at the faces easier with it somehow. i like the gentle subtlety it adds even if you cant really tell. it makes things look nice.

background was just me blocking in the color of the wall and floor, shade the wall a bit, then slap a noise and free use wood texture on top. work smarter not harder ! yet it took a bit to make it look stylistically fitting with the characters, and even now i think bottom middle panel looks odd. whatever!!!

for the middle panel i thought itd be funny if the background was a solid silly and colorful one to contrast the next panel's sketchy black one. a contrast to how the word widow is seen. on that note my handwritting is not pointy. i gaslighted my hand into thinking that it was indeed pointy in that moment so i could write "not-yet dead person" in letters that didn't seem cute. my hand did not fall for it but it complied anyway

that's basically it! I'm not sure what else i could say that doesn't feel barebones because it really is that straightforward. if you're curious I used clip studio paint for this. only special brush used was for linework (a brush named Lemon Brush), the rest used were just the default. my computer gets the least credit. it was trying to convince me a 20mb file was going to nuke it all the time and hardly let me save multiple times so i do not appreciate it

Hello again! A question I've been meaning to ask you, between the Vizion aliens, do you have a favorite? Someone who you like writing for, their personality or just as a character.

Oh. Now that is a good question… I can’t possibly be normal about this one.

The short answer is that they all make me bite things for different reasons, and because of that I think I’d struggle to pick a clear favourite. They mean different things to me: one is blurring the line between monster and god when you really shouldn’t be either; one is inescapably doomed by the narrative; one is just a little guy. They’re all fuck ups in their own special ways and they all belong in the shredder <3

The long answer involves me rambling for forever about the characters themselves, and there is no way for me to escape from that looking sane because this is the sort of shit I’m using my literature degree for these days. We will go for the medium answer!

For writing specifically, there are different things to explore that make them interesting to me. The contradictions! The drive! I love that, despite everything, Viz is still something of an optimist who wants to do good, but his idea of ‘good’ is so deeply wrong it’s impossible for it to help anyone. I love that Diz had the potential to be legitimately brilliant but reduced himself to a snarling mess of an attack dog and wouldn’t know how to stop if he tried. I love that Quiz is a selfish coward who, when it comes right down to the wire, will stand against horrific odds for the mere hope that it will help. They all have positive traits that are ultimately so warped they loop back around into being their worst qualities.

(I think I’d say I like the ways the characters intersect the best rather than picking any one of them. Idk, man, it’s the triangle of it all: Quiz as the one the other two defend and manage, one of the few things they still team up for with no question; Diz as the lynchpin Quiz and Viz both knew separately before they ever met each other and who they both no longer understand; Viz as the leader they trust implicitly even when he’s horrifically wrong because there isn’t anyone else. And then they all have their own individual intricacies and concerns within this mutual framework.

Currently I’m switching between how they reacted to each other in the past and how they do now in the present, and Viz and Quiz are fascinating me. There’s a scene early on in their V.I.Z.ion era where Viz teaches Quiz to shoot properly. They get into an argument (because Diz is basically catatonic and tensions are high) and Quiz recognises for the first time that this isn’t a piece he’s moving around on a battleground anymore—it’s a guy. It’s the first time he breaks out of the Enquirer mindset he’s been trained in to and recognises Viz as a person. And for Viz, teaching Quiz to defend himself is an acknowledgment of him being part of his new, three-person crew, something he really didn’t want to have to accept for a lot of difficult reasons. The whole thing is just… not sweet, exactly, because look at who and what we’re talking about, but… it’s close. Especially after the outright dystopian shit I’ve written about their homeworld at this point. Anyway, unrelated ramble over.)

For drawing? My favourite is Diz. He only has two arms to deal with and therefore I only have to draw two hands! The silhouettes for the other two are also harder to work with. Sorry about your trauma buddy, but I can’t deny the convenience!

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.

Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:

I don't think that kids should be exclusively homeschooled, but I also don't think that kids should be going to a building with hundreds of people 5 days a week during a pandemic. It's one of the main reasons why it keeps spreading so rapidly and won't go away. They don't take any preventative measures at schools anymore (at least not around here). You got kids? You're getting sick. Your coworker has kids? You're getting sick.

Schools are back to counting attendance. You can't even keep your kid home long enough to recover from covid before sending them back. They literally send a "truancy" (police) officer to your house if you keep them home too often.

I feel like we could be doing something better. I'm not entirely sure what the solution is. But this isn't it.

As I get older and older I more tangibly realize why queer individuals in older generations than mine might prefer words I wouldn't use for myself, and likewise why younger generations preferences would be different too. Like it was always clear you know, a person knows their identity best and what labels they prefer best and even if you don't get it you should respect it. But I guess the older I get the more I realize I really don't know and never can know the background another person has for their perceptions and meaning for labels and why something in particular helps them to use or not
